I met him once at a charity match with Essex, lots of cricketing celebrities on view with the monotonous tones of Bob Willis commentating, he was hilarious.
Oh yes Sir G came in to bat and was out first ball, except they told him to carry on and he got 75 in no time whatsoever.
The word "great" is over used, but not in this case. Sobers, in my opinion and in the opinion of many, was the greatest all-rounder to have graced the game. Had he not bowled one over, he would still be regarded as one of the best Test batsmen of all time, but equally had he not batted, he would have been one of the all time great bowlers. Capable of top class seam, and spin – in the latter case, both orthodox spin and left arm wrist spin, which is unique to him in Test cricket.
I only ever saw him play on TV towards the end of his career, but even then, he had one of the most graceful bat swings I have seen.
His natural sporting talent was such that he was superb at football, basketball and golf too.
I feel lucky to have seen him play. I wish I could have seen him in his prime.
