Title: Sunderland goal
Post by: irishfulham on August 31, 2026, 08:25:50 AM
Have watched this back a few times. Can't understand leno going in with his feet. Looks like he gets there surely if he dives in with the hand?

Goalkeeping 101 - The biggest fear for me is that he's lost that yard of pace and mobility. Something that allowed him to react and make the saves he used too.

Andersen not reading the play on his run back was a fault too - Isidor peeled off him so easily with a slightly angled run while Andersen running straight line.

The only positive I can take from yesterday is that the manager & owners must see where we desperately need reinforcements.

Unfortunately, I doubt they'll be spending £30m+ on a new keeper.

I know he has been offered to palace but Sanchez of Walham could be a decent shout.

Not for me, the last thing we need is another Tony Warner, his positioning is atrocious.

I totally agree. As soon as he drops on the ball the attack ends.

Even if he just gets a fingertip to it, it would mean the attacker doesn't reach it and it likely goes towards Andersen, running in a few yards behind.

It was a good read by Leno to go out to the ball, as he could see Andersen was never getting there. Going with his feet was a mistake.

He's isn't great, but would be an improvement over Leno.

Eh, it was a read I expect any PL level GK to make, the problem for me wasn't just that he went with his feet, it was that he was slow to get out. Frankly, I think his lack of pace in getting out to the ball is WHY he went with his feet. For me Leno has slowed down the past few years...whether that's in his decision making or in reacting to shots (and the stats back that up).

Seeing that a goalkeeper is the only player allowed to use his hands on the field of play.
This was a bad error of judgment.

Sanchez is no where near good enough to replace Leno, why do you think Chelscum has replaced him

We are playing three at the back with Leno expected to be the central figure. Its never going to work.

This rule does not apply to
Manchester United.

Well, they're a club with legit CL ambitions who have limitless money and want to strengthen every position in pursuit of that CL goal. Emiliano Martinez became available and he is an upgrade on Robert Sanchez. As for comparing Leno to Sanchez, over the past two seasons Sanchez has prevented +3.8 goals, Leno -10.7 (Martinez +4.7).

Sanchez might not be hood enough for Chelsea given their aspirations, however his stats suggest he is dar better than Leno, and Martinez stats suggest he is an upgrade on Sanchez.

Would take Sanchez tomorrow

Take him wherever you wish, provided it's nowhere near Motspur Park or SW6.  And statistics without proper interpretation are like a fish on a bicycle - interesting but ineffective

Then offer some interpretation for us as to why Sanchez is not an improvement over Leno (even though shot stopping stats show he is a VASTLY better shot stopper). Look, I actually think Sanchez makes more boneheaded decisions than Leno, those "errors leading to goals" that the shot stopping stats don't necessarily capture, but if I'm choosing between the two that's a tradeoff I'd be willing to make for the vastly superior shot stopping.

Yes it looks like Leno was worried he would get a kick in his face so went "safe" with his feet. What I didn't like was Joachim Andersen in the centre circle playing the wide Sunderland man onside at the start of the move - sheer carelessness.

Yeah the fault was 50:50 between the two of them. Mind you when you play 90mins without a single attempt on target that doesn't leave much margin for error!

Blaming those two ok, but no one there trying to stop the cross, Bassey was left standing.

That means the whole back line were guilty, as they must have been further up.

The issue I have is that during the match we hadn't put our defensive line in those positions. Why was the change necessary after we had sustained some good defensive shape and held Sunderland to mostly half-chances? The logic doesn't make sense to me, especially because Sunderland put on pace - yet we respond with making our line higher and fullbacks even further? Paired up with a central midfielder playing right centerback who is turned around and doesn't win the ball or cut off the angle to the pass when Sunderland hit the post.

I question relying on center halves to track back at pace with strikers. Not exactly their forte. Both Bassey and Andersen were outrun. This is the price of pushing everyone forward. Fine if you're chasing the match but with a point in hand, it seems foolish to me.

He's already got one MoM award for us this season.
