Senderos put in a top performance today. Part of the reason we have the 2nd highest clean sheets in the league.
Senderos really hasn't done too much wrong since he came into the team bar dislodging one of the clubs finest central defensive partnerships and thats hardly his fault.
Just wish some of the fans around where I sit would stop digging him out at every opportunity.

Everyone has been saying this as if it is the surest thing in the world.
Every player has the potential to mess up big time, and some players have this season, but Senderos has been near perfect. The stick he gets because people think he looks like an 'accident waiting to happen' is beyond ridiculous.
We and he was very lucky ...that he was not sent off on a number of occasions this season. That old chestnut of bundling a player over and putting your hands in the air to indicate : '' It weren't me gov ..honest '' only works now and then

I too am waiting for him to be the 'accident waiting to happen' (my Arsenal mate calls him Sendusdross) but please give him credit as it hasnt happened yet whenever he has played this season. Yes he did bring down Adams but that was because the midfielders you mentioned didnt do their job and allowed the situation to be one on one with Adams running unchallenged straight at a central defender.
Agreed, it is a very thin line between aggression and thuggery, I feel he wants to impress and keep his team place and tries sometimes a little too vigoursly

He had to make it. The challenge was a foul, but it wasn't malicious, just aimed at stopping him before he entered the area and could dive (as he is well known for). Cynical defending, but it stops us conceding. What if Hughes had done that when Saha burst alongside him and then scored? We would be 1 point better off.

I would also add that Senderos is much better on the ball than Hughes. He can pass progressively on the floor and is totally comfortable on the ball. We look a better side with him and Hangeland at the back as they tend to hoof it much less.
IMO tackling in front of goal is about timing, it takes a while for the defender to work out the attackers, motion particularly if they have not played against them before. If the defender has had success in the past against a particular Striker , the defender has the upper hand.
...a bit like ten people on a skipping rope each person has to time their entry and exit so as not to disrupt the rope.
Philippe's timing makes me nervous, that's all I am saying.

Well, it's going to happen isn't it? We might get people being anti Jol etc, but these players can't go on forever.
There's a real symmetry between us and Chelsea at the moment with new managers, new tactics, ageing squad.
It's going to be interesting!
I was impressed with the way he was directing the other players on numerous occasions yesterday (in a good way - at least from where I could see).
He was continually marshaling them to hold the line and move forward.
I loved the Hughes & Hangeland partnership, but as mentioned Senderous has earned the spot due to merit. He provides needed additional height, and he's crafty enough to tread the line between fouls and penalties. I definitely think our distribution from the back is better when he's in, mainly b/c I've being paying closer attention to Hughes passing of late and haven't been very impressed.
Plus he's only 26 and has many good years ahead of him. Here's hoping he & Brede will provide at least as many solid years as H&H did.

Please be assured that all players with defensive roles are 'accidents waiting to happen', it's the nature of the job. The trick is not to let them happen.

You know as soon as it happens, ie a Senderos gaff/Sidwell sending off, they will come out the woodwork claiming their preconceived ideas were right all along.
For me it comes down to a lack of their football knowledge and understanding of the game.

KCat why can't you just have a bit of faith in your players, this guy came here picked up a serious injury worked bloody hard to recover, get fit and work his way into the team, yes he has had the odd blip but then so has Hangerland so Has Murphy, give the guy a little credit and if it does happen then i am sure you will be straight on here saying I told you so.
went nuts when he signed because he is absolute class and on the level of hangeland when he is confident and playing well. he suffered a crisis of confidence at arsenal which turned him from teenager in the champions league final to a parody of a defender but where is a better place than fulham to rescue a career? brilliant bit of work from roy and im really glad he's playign consistently now.
When you consider the prices paid for Scott Dann and Roger Johnson, fees quoted for Samba and Gary Chaill, how lucky are we to have got Senderos for absolutely zip!?

Even Brede makes mistakes. I can think of a dodgy header into the danger area in the 2nd half v Bolton, and there is an argument that he was seriously out of position for the 2nd Odense goal. Not having a go at Brede, but if Senderos did either of those, he would be crucified.
I take Hughes over Senderos any day.

If Senderos becomes as good as Hangeland (and at this stage, there is no reason why he shouldn't) then we will have had two of the best defenders in the prem playing for us for £2.5m in transfer fees. Agree with everything Lork said. Senderos was one of the most in demand players when he was younger but chose to go Arsenal. Hopefully he's settled now because he's class. People say he fouls too much but sometimes they benefit us i.e Liverpool, they would of been in. Hughes would never make those challenges. Sometimes you have to make tactical fouls and Senderos is very good at it.

While the Hughes-Hangeland tandem is probably the best centre-half pairing I've seen in club football over almost 50 years of watching, I think that Senderos is probably the better of Hughes now. It could very well be that trying Hughes at RB was Jol's experiment to see if he could retain Hughes's calm and vision. I don't think it worked, and it's possible that Hughes may be one of those on his way out in January.
What a brilliant player he has been for us; having said that, I think Senderos is going to prove to be an upgrade.
There's no doubt that Senderos is Hangeland's new defensive partner for the forseeable future, and although he still has his clumsy moments there is no doubt that not having the weight of 60,000 fans waiting for you to mess up (though going about it quietly) every week is really doing him good. The phrase "he's found his level" comes to mind, and we're reaping the reward.

I think as a group, we have overlooked this hard to ignore fact. While we are not scoring enough, we remain difficult to breakdown because our back four overall cohesiveness with Hangeland anchoring the group. Thank you again Roy Hodgson.
