Bad news! Liverpool bid for 28-goal attacker *rejected*...

A couple of hours ago, Liverpool put in an improved bid for Fulham striker Clint Dempsey in an attempt to head off a late surge of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. Well, it seems that Martin Jol is exacting vengeance of the Reds for allegedly 'tapping up' Dempsey as Fulham have rejected the bid.

Earlier today, Fulham accepted a £7m bid from Aston Villa, but Dempsey refused the move as he's determined to join Liverpool.

If the Reds' bid matched or exceeded Villa's, and it was still rejected, then it's definitely a display of petty vindictiveness from the West London club.

Having said that, let's hope that Liverpool are not trying to lowball Fulham at this stage of the game; just pay the money and get it over with!

Fulham reported Liverpool to the Premier League last week claiming Dempsey had been tapped up, and Jol slammed the player for speaking publicly about his wish to move on.

Dempsey grabbed 28 goals and 7 assists for Fulham and the USA last season. Jol is playing hardball, but I'm sure the Reds will prevail in the end.

The saga continues...

EDIT: 20:40pm

An LFC Reporter just stated the following on LFC TV:

"It's looking increasingly unlikely that Liverpool will sign anyone else before the transfer deadline. Brendan Rodgers has gone home, and Ian Ayre is preparing to leave Melwood"

It's not looking good...

Let's face it. The Plod tapped CD on the basis they wanted him, but not at market value - and with an eye on the fact he'll be a free agent within a year. CD wants Plod very much and toys are out of pram. Soooo, do we keep a disaffected player for 12 more months and he walks for free, or do we let him go at a piss-take rate. Villa's cheeky entry amused me. Basically it's sxxx or get off the pot by the hubcap stealers.

Although it amused me greatly this morning, Villa's bid actually seems to have worked quite well for both clubs: it set a firm benchmark of our asking price for Dempsey, and possibly gave Genk a second thought in the Benteke negotiations.

Is there something going on between Lambert and Jol that we should know about? :)

I think it's going on now between MAF and his opposite number at Puddle.

ESPN understands that the fee Fulham wanted for Dempsey from Liverpool was higher than that they accepted from Spurs or Villa.

And the lesson is: don't mess with MAF.

Time for a calm reflection on the rest of Liverpool's season:
