I will be at my first game since crewe in division 1 over a decade a go on boxing day! I am never in the UK during the season so thanks to my sister for popping out a kid that i have to visit and letting me see the lads in the flesh!

Bryan Ruiz could return as the 27-year-old has been out since coming off in the 3-1 defeat to Sunderland on November 18 with a hamstring injury, but is rated 50-50 by manager Martin Jol for a return. Mahamadou Diarra and Mladen Petric are doubts and Damien Duff is definitely out. Simon Davies (hip) is also unavailable, while Steve Sidwell returns from suspension.
Adam Lallana is again likely to be missing. The Saints captain missed Saturday's 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland with a knee injury and is expected to miss out on the trip to Craven Cottage. Nigel Adkins' side appeared to come through the defeat to the Black Cats without any new knocks.
Ruiz and Sidwell back in would be good. Sidwell has done more good than bad and is a decent midfield enforcer. Ruiz can play make. 3 pointer for us. The Swans will be more difficult.
How would you set up?

Sidders and Baird whilst great guys and solid pros were never going to cut it long term as replacements for Dembele and Dempsey.

I would not be upset if we lost Haggers now, as long as we brought in a good replacement. I for one am not convinced that he will be as strong in the future as he has in the past.
I'm not sure what the team will be, but knowing Jol it will not have Stockdale,Briggs,kasami, Kaca (although Frei will start) in it.

I wonder what costa rican dutch is for sick note. The amount of absences Ruiz has had hardly makes him the top topic of conversation and hardly a reliable figure to build a team around. Too much of a gamble imho. Berbatov hardly gets a mention though compared to other interviews. He's probably saving Berba for the post match interview when he bemoans the fact we did'nt use him enough.

5 points from the two games might just prove difficult without Ruiz.
By my maths you cannot get 5 points from 2 games so with or without Ruiz it will be impossible.
3 against Southampton as a minimum requirement (it will feels like a 6-pointer anyway), 4 would be great as Swansea look good and 6 from the 2-games would make my Christmas

Considering we bagged most of those in the openning two months or so of the season I would suggest it is a meteoric descent. Three points at tea time on the 1st and some will be scowling at Jol. Four or five and there might be some leniency. Nil and it will be very interesting
I actually can't believe some still consider Ruiz as the messiah in this shambles. His absences are more legendary than him.
There's a good chance you get 1, 2 or no points from the next two games. Of course everyone's hope is for 6, but it depends on the mood...mostly Berbatov's

Martin Jol sprung a pleasant surprise in his pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon when he revealed that Bryan Ruiz is in contention to face Southampton on Boxing Day (3pm).
"The team news is that Bryan Ruiz is joining us on Christmas Day," Jol told the gathered media. "We will make an assessment in the training session and then, hopefully, he could join us for Southampton. If not, he will be available for the next match against Swansea City.
"There's a 50:50 chance that he will be fit for selection on Wednesday. But he was doing a good test on Monday morning with the physios and the Head of Medical and on Tuesday he will join us in a collective session. We will see how much progress he has made and whether or not he can join us.
"Another decision would be whether I start him or if he plays a role in the second half but, first, we have to make the decision on whether he can join us and if he's fit for selection.
"The other news is that Mladen Petrić is out with injury – hopefully he will be fit within a week but, if not, we struggle a bit in the spine [of the Team]. Mahamadou Diarra is an important player too and we will make an assessment on him on Tuesday, but I don't think he will have a chance to be involved [against Southampton]. Hopefully he can be involved against Swansea. Damien Duff is another one who is going to miss out as he's got a calf strain."
The last two Fulham performances have been lacklustre to say the least and Jol admits that a drastic improvement in form is urgently needed.
"We've had one win in the last 10 and that is not good enough," he said. "We have to come up with something and be more organised, play better football and, hopefully, we will get some players back who can do that.
"If every player is on the board then I don't think there is a big problem but we've struggled a bit with injuries in the first half of the season. We would like to have somebody, for example, for Bryan if he is not there. We tried that with [Dimitar] Berbatov and he was good sometimes but sometimes it worked against us because you need Berbatov up front.
"Of course, we are disappointed and the only thing we can do is keep the spirit up, try to be positive and tell the players that they are capable of winning games. We know that other players like Bryan and Diarra are important to us but, even when they are not there, we should pick up results."
He continued: "There are still two games to come [this year] and if we can have a couple of results there we'll probably finish with a decent amount of points and that's half the points we would like to have – that is 50 points.
"But if we do the same as we did over the last six weeks, we won't have our 50 points – that is clear. So, of course, you need your players but we also need our spirit and the players who can make the difference.
"Of course, we wanted to get back on track against Queens Park Rangers but I don't think we were good enough and against Liverpool we didn't show our strengths but, hopefully, we can pick up the points against Southampton because it's a vital game for us and a vital game for them as well.
"We are in a good position and we've got a good cushion but if you don't pick up the points in the next week or so then we are really in a relegation battle with other teams."
Wednesday's game at Craven Cottage has become hugely important following our recent run and, while the bookmakers will make the Whites favourites in the festive fixture, Jol cautions that there are no easy matches in this division.
"It's a thin line between winning and losing games, especially in this league," he said. "Sometimes Southampton show that they can have the results and sometimes they show their weaknesses – like we did and like other teams did.
"Take Aston Villa, for example; at the weekend they lost 8-0 and the week before they were beating Liverpool 3-1 away from home. So that is the Barclays Premier League for you. It's an unbelievably strong league and you have to be strong in your organisation and you need your players who can make the difference.
"The difference between us and Southampton was that we had a good start so now we're on 20 points. They struggled for the first part but you saw Norwich City, for example; they picked up big time and they've got enough points now.
"But there are a lot of teams on 23, 25 points so there is not a big difference, but in the Premier League you have to pick up your points at the right moments and if we do that we'll get the points we need to stay in the league.
"That is what we want and that is our first priority – to get points on the board and then there are enough games and enough points to gain to be in a good position."

It's really good news that he's available and like yourself, I'd rather not risk him starting a match yet. 20-30 minutes in the second half would be fine though.
I'd rather not bring him back too soon and risk further injury.
Like Cebu said, 10/20 minutes at the end when we're hopefully winning comfortably.

I'm unclear. You prefer him not to play, because he may get injured again. He is a professional footballer on tens of thousands per week. If he is selected as a sub, you would presume he is fit enough to come on play? If he is a sub, and Berba is on the pitch to play up front - I want to see Ruiz play! In fact, I want to see Ruiz come on and change the course of a game.

Tavares played in our last under-21s match, and he has been here for long enough. What was the point - what is the point of signing a player that clearly will be fortunate to see any 1st team playing team? Also, he is taking up space in our under 21s that could be well used for the development of one of our young players. Also, he still needs to be paid!? I just don't get it.

Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis believes the trip to Fulham on Boxing Day is the first of a number of winnable fixtures coming up for the south coast club.
Saints saw a mini revival abruptly ended by a 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland on Saturday, although they will spend Christmas outside the relegation zone.
The loss also maintained a three-point gap between themselves and 16th-placed Aston Villa - something Davis is looking to close quickly, starting at Craven Cottage.
"In terms of Christmas, I think the games we've got are winnable," he told Press Association Sport, referring to the trip to Stoke and visit of Arsenal that follows.
"We go into those games fully intending to set our stall out so we can win those games. That's what we'll ask of ourselves.
"Who knows if Dimitar Berbatov is the man to watch out for against Fulham. I am not sure if he has scored many this season, has he?
"He is a top class player but he is not their only player. He didn't play against us down here and we conceded two goals so they've got quality all over the pitch.
"They wouldn't have been in the Premier League for this amount of time if they weren't quality so we will obviously pay them respect, but it is about turning up on the day, performing and taking the three points."
The Sunderland game was Davis' second back in goal after being recalled to Premier League duty.
The 36-year-old has been a mainstay in the Saints side that rose from npower League One to the top flight but was dropped four matches into the season, having conceded 14 goals.
Paulo Gazzaniga and Artur Boruc have both enjoyed stints between the sticks since and Davis is keen to hold onto his first-team berth.
"When you are used to playing week in, week out, which I have been certainly at this club over the past three or four seasons, it is always difficult," he said.
"But I accept that you can't always have it your own way and that the right thing to do is to keep your head down and work as hard as you can.
"Obviously I looked at myself and what I was doing. I felt that in terms of where I was, I am 36, it is about maintenance and staying on top of yourself physically.
"I felt that if I stayed in good shape and carried on doing what I was doing my time would come again.
"It is not my decision, it is a decision the manager takes."
One key difference to the Saints side Davis lined up behind when he returned earlier this month was the defence.
Having let in 28 goals in their opening 10 matches, they have now only conceded five in the last seven.
"We've got a bit more experience," Davis said. "We've worked very hard on the training ground and players have played a few games with each other now.
"Basically it is getting up to speed with the Premier League and how it can be.
"We have had to learn very, very quickly and it is a harsh league, the Premier League.
"We found that out against Sunderland. Half a chance and it goes in so it is about improving all the time and I think we are still doing that."

Great news for Fulham that their captain is missing today. We should really be beating the likes of Southampton and if we see the Fulham who beat Newcastle turn up, we will win. Lallana provides most of the creativity for the Saints, it is time to roll our sleeves up and exploit this with a bit of grit missing in previous matches. COYW!!!!

Completely Agree, Lallana is their biggest threat, and without him I can't see them causing as too many problems as long we don't back off them and let play.

I'm sorry everyone, but I think you're all wrong. The only reason he may not start is as a result of a lack of match fitness. You don't put a player back in the squad if his injury isn't fully healed. If he is in the squad, his injury is healed. Jol wouldn't even risk him for 5 minutes if his injury was still lingering!

still got ramirez who is an impressive player, and puncheon everytime ive seen him looks dangerous. schneiderlin is decent aswell.
We will still depend on Baird and Sidwell being on their top form otherwise our attackers wil again not be seeing enough of the ball.
Best to start him and see how long he lasts than bring him on as a sub and having to sub him. Or bring him on late in the game when Southampton are tired or we are 6-0 down.

If he's fit then start. If there is any doubt leave him alone.
Jol has a habit of bringing players back too early, and this could just be a sign of panic if he's not really fit.
Coming back from a hamstring injury on a cold wet day is not the best idea. He needs to start after a good pre match warm up not sit on a cold bench for an hour & then come on.
Presumably he wouldn't be in the squad unless he was fully fit injury wise.
It's ironic - now everyone s taking of Ruiz's return as being crucial, when not so long ago many thought he was a luxury we couldn't afford (not me though - I did say earlier in the season that he would show his worth this season).
Anyway, I hope that if he plays he will be able to do a good job for the team. There is pressure on him, but then there has been since he arrived as Jol's most expensive signing.
strange arguments. The manager is under pressure and if ruiz says he is fit he may well risk him. you see this type of thing all the time. we were told ruiz would miss the whole of the festive season games, he has never recovered quickly before, so why would he now? if ruiz starts the chances of him breaking down will be high and caution should be key. I would rather struggle today and not risk him than watch him limp off before the end.

Jol is a grown up man, he has to use his experience for this type of thing. If the player says he is ok then jol has to make it clear that he really has to be. It's the managers judgement that is in question. If ruiz plays and is fit wonderful but it just seems to me a remarkable recovery for a player that is fragile!
I also wonder where petric is? He has hardly played and seems to be injured alot. Where footballers stronger years ago, we seem to have a very lame lot, diara injured too.

No its not. It's the physio call to tell him if the player is fit to play.

Fulham is a professional club with professional physios and doctors, I'm pretty sure they'll know more about his injury then any of us.
and we all have experienced this type of thing before, in the end the manager makes the descision. at some point we all have to use our experience. All I am saying is caution is important when dealing with the fragile types i.e. ruiz.
But can-and did get it wrong before-obviously know absolutely nothing ourselves-
the 6 nil down reference is a worry.
