That defending by Hangeland for the 3rd goal, my word if that had been a certain Valencia player there would have been howls of derision on here today.
Hangeland cannot play right centre back, that's why we struggled to have him and Amborieta in the same line up.
Hopefully Heitinga will strike up a decent partnership with either Burn or Hangeland.
Totally agree. I fear hangeland`s time has come to an end. Backing almost in to his own keeper on the first goal aswell. Hope we try out "Passley - Heitinga - Burn - LB" against Sheffield, maybe that will work.
Hughes made Hangeland look much better than he is. It was Hughes reading of the game and positional sense which made it happen. Long before the window, I said we need TWO solid centre backs. Defenders who know how to defend and enjoy doing it. There are plenty of them around. Hangeland's return from injury has made no difference to the leaking boat.

It worrying when Burn at 21 seems to be the one trying to organise the back 4 when you have the capt next to him.

I see that as a positive. burn will be huge for us providing we can keep him. much rather burn be in control of our defence as he is on the up whilst brede could soon be phased out

I have said for years Aaron made brede look good, Hughes was the stalwart in the Thames barrier, always covering. I don't think hangers has been the same since his arsenal move never happened.

And that's another point, why is he still captain?
Personally watching from the Hammy End Hangeland and Burns looked pretty secure in the first half - in my opinion the defense looked more secure than at any other home match this season.
What is apparent from the last three matches is that for the first half we have arguably been the best team (certainly had the best chances anyway) then we have conceded the first goal on the hour mark and fallen apart afterwards both defensively and offensively.
Yesterday Southampton made intelligent changes in the second half - Cork and Clyne added pace and more importantly width to bypass a congested midfield - and I am afraid Reither went missing at the back whilst attacking. Surely it must be obvious that whilst he is often our best threat someone from midfield should be ready to defend the space behind him.
Just chattin to my Old man about the game and I have made it clear in here what I feel would make a huge differences going forward (not having centre midfielders on the wings)
However thinking about it on another day we could have been 3 up at half time...

It would have been such a different game had the oppurtunities been put in the first half :S
Not only has Hangeland's defence been poor for over a year - he has missed too many chances at set pieces - he had a golden opportunity at Swansea to put us in the lead - what a difference that would have made as were OK in first half

I did notice that when Hangeland back headed towards the top corner a Southampton player had both arms round him trying to stop him jumping. I thought at the time it should have been a pen.Refs seem to overlook this sort of thing.
I honestly still believe we can stay up keep the faith the new boys when all in together will make us a totally different side
I have to admit it... I am seeing Hangeland more as a liability these days. He seems to have lost his confidence in 1 on 1 defending and gives the offensive player way too much space for fear of getting beat. Alternatively, when he does have the ball the selection and accuracy of his passing is more often than not lacking. It puts our midfield at a disadvantage when they are having to fight for 50/50 balls all day from the center back.

Heitinga cannot play in the replay. Only players who were eligible for the first game can play in a replay. The only exception to this is players who were suspended for the first game and who have served their suspension.

I noticed that too - but referees never seem prepared to blow for a penalty - Liverpool's Agger has been a noticeable culprit this season. One positive from recent matches is that Hangeland and Burns have been offering a genuine threat at set pieces in the first half.

****, that's a shame I would hv liked to see that line up. Maybe we see Burn with Amorebieta? Rene knows we desperately need a confidence boosting win so don't be surprised if the kids are gone and it's a first team. After all we need to bed in the new signings and we will all be happy to not see Duff, Bent, Parker and Sidwell start this one...
