We have a stronger squad this season than last season. This is for certain. However I don't think this is evidence that we will actually be challenging or competitive near the top of the league.
Our signings:
Pringle - Free signing, best player from 21st placed Rotherham.
O'Hara - Free signing, best player from last placed Blackpool.
Cairney - Best midfielder from 9th placed Blackburn.
Jazz Richards - One impressive performance for Wales does not counteract a dozen or so unimpressive performances for us.
Lonergan - 29 appearances for 18th placed Bolton. Rumour that he is our number one goalkeeper.
Luke Garbutt - Young full back with potential.
Of course I could be wrong here but it doesn't inspire me with too much confidence. It strikes me as a midtable side at most. Nothing has been done to address the center back issue. Symons does not seem to rate Burn which means we are relying on Hutchinson and Bodurov. Rigg seems to be struggling to get deals done for Championship players, Dunk and McDonald. Whether this is because of a lack of financial backing from Khan or Rigg's negotiation skills is unknown.
Then on the other hand we have lost Roberts and are at risk of losing Bettinelli, Dembele, Hyndman and LVC (apparently Villa are circling).
As for tactics. If we play a 4-2-3-1 then I fear it will be reminiscent of the Jol era. Lack of pace and width and we will be easy to stifle, not to mention our defensive frailty. Potentially our left flank could be exciting with Garbutt and Pringle/Kaca. Potentially.
Maybe I am a pessimist instead of a skeptic but I do not hold too much faith in the squad as it stands to be competitive.
Hmm.
Hold on nobody should be talking about challenging at the top of the league. However after last seasons wasted season we are beginning to rebuild a squad.
As for the rest, well the transfer window has a long time to run so all a bit early to talk about not addressing the back four issues. Roberts has gone and that means we have lost nothing and gained some money. He was never good enough to play consistently last season and I guess would not be a first choice this season. May be a great star in the future. As for the players that could be leaving. Well that is the nature of the beast. We lose our best players. It has always happened.
As for not being competitive. I presume that was your opinion last season. It certainly was mine. So I think we have improved on last seasons squad. So here is hoping for a better season. But to expect a struggling side over the last 5 or more seasons to suddenly be promotion material is pushing it. So a slow improvement is what we may have and we hope for more.
I've gotta agree, I'm feeling very skeptical too.
The signings so far are definite improvements on what we had, but our biggest problem last year was the amount of goals we conceded and we've done f-all to fix that so far.
A stronger midfield should keep the ball better, but a huge number of goals we conceded last season was from individual errors in a flakey backline.
I know I sound like a broken record, but I really can't see us being close to challenging. Our squad is absolutely miles off those of Boro and Derby and it's hard to see anyone we have, bar Ross maybe, going straight either of their teams.
I really want to be optimistic, but I'm worried we're in for a drab mid-table season where we lose the rest of our youngster in Jan...
Listen, I thought we would be mid table last season and we started with 1 point from 7 and rock bottom. The players we have aquired are good players and the fact that they shone for crap sides you could argue makes them even better. We have 5 weeks to sort out the central defence and have reportedly made at least 6 bids for players so eventually we will sign one or two, its just all parties currently trying to maximise money, Rigg talked about this in his interview this week. Our young players are a year older and Kit will have learnt from last season. If he has not learnt enough, he will not last too long ! We have money in the bank, and could still bring in another forward and a DMF player. I don't 'expect' to be challenging for promotion, however I 'expect' a lot better than last season. Where we will end up is uncertain and it may take a season to gell what is after all another 'brand new team'. Plenty of reasons to be optimistic and that is how I will remain at the moment. Results will soon tell us the truth.

But this is not true. We have a new keeper (backup or first choice). We have a new right back and left back. Richards only played a part of last season on loan. If he is as crap as some say, I doubt he would play for Wales and have had games for Swansea. That is 3 out of 5 defenders. We are clearly in for at least one central defender and could by the end of the window have a TOTALLY new back 5 !
I think pringle and cairney were signings most of us were very keen on an and we got them. I think betts was close to being our player of the season last season (fans vote) and the squad is looking better. Ohara was probably the least wanted player but in the time he has been here I think he has been the most impressive. We would be silly in expecting more than mid table next season and any more than that would be great. With a completely new midfield I think it may take time until we seen the best from them. The possibility of new defenders would also mean it will take more time for them to form a unit. I think one big difference is our bench will be a lot stronger.
Yes Mike, I think you have it about right. We have bought in a little more experience in midfield but lets be honest none of last season's championship leaders were trying to sign these players which indicates they probably already have better players.
We were terrible last season and it is unlikely that these modest signings will transform us into a title chasing outfit. We will of course have to wait for a game or two to see how good or bad we are this season but the real hope lies in the progress made by the young players we introduced last season.
If LVC, Dembele, Hyndman and Woodrow have made a development leap then we could be in for a pleasant surprise.
Of course we have to tighten up at the back, if we ship goals at the rate we did last season we are again in trouble.
I never buy the argument that this player played for a team that went down or below so he's no good. Any of the teams above us would take Ross or LVC. It's the player you look at, not the team.

Think we need a few more players but the ones we've brought in are improvements, no question.

he didnt improve our defense though did he, and if you was on twitter the night of the wales belgium game, you would have seen all the welsh fans questioning why he had been picked in the first 11. which suggests to me that before that game, he hadnt impressed for wales either. maybe he is not a crap player, but i believe the majority wanted someone better.
Well, our squad is definitely in better shape and most players have championship experience. I think we will have a comfortable season but not necessarily in the race for promotion.

lol, is that really your arguement. why do you think they loaned him and then sold him for just 500k then? and yes its amazing who can get selected when all other options are injured or suspended.
The squad has definitely been improved with some astute signings, and the club has said it's hoping to sign a couple more.
So on paper we should do better than last season , or at least begin better, when we began with a completely inexperienced team, many of them fresh out the youth team.
Danny Kelly on 5Live said that Magath thought pre-season that the standard of the Championship was about that of a Sunday League - and there's maybe some truth in that.
Anyway, it's a good job that Kit came in when he did.
So we survived, and this is fresh season with a definitely improved side re experience - so let's give it a chance. I will feel positive until results say the opposite, which I hope won't happen, but I'm not sure promotion is on the cards this year - but let's get behind the team for a decent season, and not write them off before it's even started.

whoops misread that. wales dont have a huge amount of players to pick from, so they wont always be able to pick good players in every position. and like i said, many welsh fans were miffed as to his selection
Why, pray, are we NOT talking about challenging for the top?? Rather that than challenging for mid-table/bottom-half!!

because our team is currently nearer a blackpool than a bournemouth. our defence needs work as does our attack if mitro leaves, not one dm at the club. no real pace, and a manager who is still (hopefully) learning. but yes other than that we should be nailed on for promotion

To challenge for the top we require a lot of players and a risk in getting them of putting our future at risk in a boom or bust type of way. After the way the club has gone recently a more reserved approach may not give us boom but will hopefully prevent bust. We can't afford to buy a championship winning team within Ffp. Going too soon may also scupper our chances later. This season should be about building a nucleus of a team that play well together and top six would be a dream. Next season should be adding quality to quality and making a massive push. The sky is the limit but get too close to the sun and you may burn your wings. So I guess what I'm saying is the lower, colder sky is the limit.
It cant be easy for Rigg to persuade players to join us. I'm still not convinced Kits the right man. Better football than last season, our youngsters maturing and a top half of the table finish would be fine in my book.
We are nowhere near ready to be looking to return to the Premiership yet.

Yep, I would have liked someone who had impressed us more, however I am willing to give him a bit of time and a run in a better organised defence. Now the question we all agree is: Will the defence improve because the one thing we all know is that it bloody well needs too.
If we had earned any type of reasonable point haul from our first eight matches, we would have finished with 60+ points, which is a mid-table team. And we were terrible last season.
We're clearly "improved," and there's no way we're coming out of this window without at least one new CB. Everything about the club's actions and news/rumors suggests that.
So, we'll see what happens. It's a long way from mid-table to the top six (last year, sixth place was 78 points, and Wolves didn't even make the playoffs with that same total), but there's no way we're not a "better" team than last season as we currently stand.
IF we strengthen the defence I think we will surprise many people. We have good crossers of the ball now and with Smith in the middle that could pay dividends - Smith is almost like a new player as he was out on loan for much of last season. He and Mc did well for Leeds and could repeat that for us, especially as it looks as though the diamond is dead. LVC needs to find his pre-injury form, but if he does...
I am more positive than most here. But it does depend on new defenders (and Rigg is trying to buy) and on Kit improving his performance. I think top 6 is possible.
As it stand right now. If no one else came in I'd expect and be confident of a top of mid table position come end of the season; butttt I really do believe we are going to improve the squad further. With a little work on sorting out the defence I'm sure we could be pushing those play-off spots

Just being rational. We were a long, long way away and although i am very happy with the direction the club is going. at the moment we still need to improve in areas.
Minimum we should expect is top half, another bottom half finish in this division is unacceptable for a football club that was a Premiership side the season before last. We need to show some ambition, I think top 6, Emerson hyndman is key.
Our most urgent need is surely a commanding centre back, commanding both in the sense of dominating opposition attackers and giving leadership to our back four. With one of those (whom surely we could get for £6m or less) and the squad we now have (I am particularly pleased we've signed O'Hara, the nearest we've come to an adequate replacement for Danny), a good manager should have us challenging for the top six.
If we don't get a good centre back, that for me represents failure by Riggs and/or Khan.
If we do and aren't in serious contention for the top six by the end of the year, that for me defines Kit as not up to the job.

I want Kit to lead us forward but I think this is fair. Although I think top 8 with a just missed out feeling would be okay.

Of course he won't play!
Hara, Cairney, LVC, McDonald will all be ahead of him.
Rigg talked about pathways in his recent video and sending players on loan. Not every player needs to be sent on loan, look at Sterling for example. Look at Harry Kane. Harry Kane was sent on loan to average/rubbish sides and he didn't do anything noteworthy. Then he gets played in a decent Spurs squad and scores goals!
Hyndman, Dembele and Woodrow should all be trusted to make a positive impact on the first team. All 3 are decent enough and will only improve in our team. If we send them out to a rubbish league 1 or league 2 side and they fail to perform, then I don't think that is a fair reflection of their ability.
I disagree with the scepticism and think we are in much better shape now than last year. What we needed last year was the best of the championship players and whilst we can argue if they are the very best, we now have the best players from 3 clubs, Smith and LVC are almost like new signings and I even think we will see Richards play better next season. With Garbutt and a proper No.2 keeper, we are in much better shape.
I think with good luck on the injury front, we should be looking at top 6 with the players we have. If we get a CB or two like we have been linked with, we should be amongst the front runners this season, albeit top 2 may be a stretch. Have some faith!

Last year we finished on 52 points. 6th place finished on 78.
Do you think the players added will give us the 26 point swing needed to get into top 6 based on last years results? That is an extra 9 wins.
I don't know if we are 9 wins better than last year, but we are better. That I believe. In many games last year we had plenty of possession and lacked end product, which I think we will better going forward. In those cases, perhaps a 1-0 loss, or 3-2 loss becomes a point or 3 points.
As for the games where we were hammered due to piss poor defense, that still needs to be addressed. I would say that we may be a few wins better, but with a CB or two we could be closer to the 9 extra wins than many may think.
I'm generally pleased with the signings, but that still doesn't guarantee success. It's pretty obvious that we will sign a CB, but whether this stems the goal concessions depends on how well the defensive unit play, not just one player.
I'm anticipating an improvement on last season, however i'm also nervous that coaching and tactics are potentially our biggest areas of concern.
For me, all those who are 'skeptical' still have their expectations way too high.
Yes we have improved the squad but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we got top ten rather than top six. I wouldn't be too disappointed with that either; we probably need another season to consolidate and push forward. Our players who remain from last season still are not the most experienced Championship players in the world, with the exception of a couple here and there, and as such will still need time to progress.
Don't get me wrong, a couple of new CBs would make me feel a lot more optimistic.
What are people skeptical of? That we will be promoted? I wouldn't call that skepticism, I would call it realism. If people think we should be nailed on for promotion then I fear the expectations are too high and Kit wont be given a fair crack this season.
Response to the opening post:
Don't look at who they played for last season, look at their contribution. Pringle arguably carried that Rotherham side and we finally have a winger with an end product again. His left foot is magical.
O'Hara while his younger years were tarred by constant media coverage, he wanted to come back to London, settle down and we've given him that opportunity. Watch him take it with open arms. He was a class above at Blackpool and when we played them at Bloomfield he was easily the best player on that pitch. His assists, chances created were phenomenal.
I'd expect us to renew his deal in January as he'll play a big part in the upcoming season. Ideal for that deeper role and his passing range is second to none.
Be very thankful that Rigg,Khan & Kit have gone out and bought midfielders who are creative. Cairney, LVC, Pringle, O'Hara is an incredibly creative midfield, the potential is endless.

Agree entirely. But a good team does not happen over night. We'll be better in the second half of the season; I predict a tough start.
Centre backs now please Mr Rigg
Kit will be given 10 games to prove himself, Which I think is more than generous of the club.
Not making the defence a priority was another mistake.

How have we not made it a priority? You don't know that at all.
We just havent been able to get any defensive signings, other than Jazz and Garbutt, over the line. We have been otherwise inked with Dunk, Lees and Tarkowski. Surely that shows that we ARE prioritising the defence!
Or at the very least, it shows that your assertion is harsh.
think we absolutely looking at bringing centre backs in but struggling to get deals over the line for whatever reason. Suprises me given our success at bringing midfielders in earlier on this season. I think the type of CB we need is hard to come by so we may have a fairly short list. Need a bit more 'out the box' thinking perhaps. Are there any league 1 centre backs for instance with the necessary qualities to make the step up? Is there someone abroad we could look at bringing in?

Maybe harsh, but to hit the ground running in the new season we
really needed a new solid defence.
Dunk, Lees and Tarkowski were worth a punt but given their importance to their clubs unlikely purchases.
The net should have been widened earlier to have avoided what seems to be the current situation.
From what I see we have been trying extremely hard to bring in defense. We have been linked with many of the best defenders in the Championship. That said, we are competing against these teams, and buying the best players from their squad to add strength to ours is not going to come easy or cheap. To Alex's point, perhaps it is time to move to other options from other leagues or Europe, and I am sure Rigg and his team are evaluating those options. Of course we, and I am sure Rigg, would rather have Dunk, Lees, or the other names we have been linked with. I believe we will have at least one, maybe two CBs in before the end of the window. I have no doubt, with the number of players we have been linked with, that it is being worked hard behind the scenes. Fulham also has a way of surprising with transfers....all quiet then boom. So and so has been signed. So again, I think it is in the works and will happen before the window closes. I am hoping for two, but would settle with one.

If anyone here truly thinks that KS and the management team are not aware of our central defence weakness then they must be just being critical for the sake of it
Football is not Football Manager on the PS4 - it is slightly more difficult than that
