Kalas Returns

The Club is delighted to announce that Tomas Kalas has returned on a season-long loan from Chelsea for the 2017/18 campaign.

Kalas played a crucial role at the heart of defence to help Fulham reach the Sky Bet Championship Semi-Finals last season.

The Czech Republic international featured in 36 league games last season and scored for the Whites against Huddersfield Town in the 5-0 win at Craven Cottage in October.

At just 24-years-old he has played seven times for the Czech Republic and has been a regular member of their squad aiming to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Prior to joining Fulham on loan last season the centre-back played a key role in helping Middlesbrough reach the Play-Off Final in 2014/15, before winning promotion with them as runners-up in the 2015/16 season.

Kalas started out at his hometown club Sigma Olomouc before joining Chelsea in the summer of 2010.

Two seasons were then spent on loan at Vitesse Arnhem in Holland, during which time he was named the Czech Republic Young Player of the Year.

He made his debut for Chelsea in a 2-0 League Cup win over Arsenal in October 2013 and his Premier League debut and first start for Chelsea came at Anfield later that season, also in a 2-0 victory.

In the summer of 2014 the defender moved on loan to FC Cologne in Germany, but he departed for Middlesbrough midway through the campaign.

Tony Khan, Vice Chairman and Director of Football Operations, said: "It's a pleasure to welcome Tomas Kalas back to the Fulham Football Club.

"We appreciate Tomas so much after the way that he battled for us last season, demonstrating not only tremendous skill but also great heart and determination. We're very excited to have him here again as one of us as we prepare for our next battle, and what we hope will be a great season! COYW!"

One of the worse kept secrets of recent days! I wasn't sure until the Fulham fan in the press confirmed it, and then had other friends confirm, but even so it's great to see it signed and sealed. We're back to where we ended the season now in my eyes. Time to push on with at least 2 more key additions.

Huge sigh of relief! I was growing more worried each day fearing that Kalas was never going to happen. Hopefully a striker or two next!

best think about this signing is he will hit the ground running, no settling in. very pleased and i cannot honestly understand why it took so long even if chelsea wanted him to go to china just to see how well he is progressing.

Amazing news!! So happy!!

I think we are actually marginally better than last year now (marginally!!). Although Malone is gone, Cisse has looked good in pre-season, Norwood is a solid Championship player and the players have had a year together.

We still need a minimum of one ST, a solid CB for competition and maybe a backup LB.

Kalas is the only nailed on starter, both Ream and Madl are milky, and the others wouldn't get on the bench in my Sunday team.
So picture this. Bearing in mind you have to cover every eventuality if your serious about promotion.
So picture this. Kalas gets injured. Are you going to be happy with a pairing of any of the others. I most certainly would not.  At the moment for me, it's Kalas and one other.
But that one other has not arrived yet.

Ream was probably our best player for the Play-Offs, and one of, if not the best in the second half of the season. Unless he regresses him and Kalas are nailed on starters.

Me neither, their focus is now on striker, possibly 2 and i would not be surprised to see a GK appear. They will look at Madl, Sigg and Djalo and hope there is enough back up for cup games and injury. You might see something done in January but cannot see it happening now, other fish to fry!

Good news - good player, works in our system, wants to be here.

This may be the transfer window where I decide there's really no difference between loaning and buying a player.  Kalas and Piazon come on loan and end up here for at least two years.  Malone bought and we only got a year.  All that really matters is whether they want to be here and are suited to the job asked of them.

Great news. For me it's now all about he striker. Our strength last season was a goal could come from a whole range of player, and I don't want to see us become a side focused around one striker. But the number of crosses we did not connect to was criminal as Martin was so slow / heart not in it. Let's hope the war chest from our sales is still hovering around a few options.

You make a good point. My instant retort was about to be "yeah, but they're loyal to their parent club." Then I remembered the parent is Chelsea and they've seen so little of that place that they probably don't even know where the gents is.

Sess, Carney & now Kalas. That and a mid and CB. Three KNOWN quantities and two possibles. Yet, the club NEVER brings in anyone.
Maybe, just maybe, there are people at the club that know more then we fickle fans.

To be honest, we couldn't have bought him for a reasonable price. Chelsea always were going to be tough to negotiate with, because we all know how their loan system works. However if we want him again next season, I think a 3rd loan is excessive.

Everyone's hope I assume is that we get promoted, and if so, Kalas will want a permant transfer to a Premier League Fulham where he helped get promotion and where he will play rather than at Chelsea where he will sit on the bench at best.

Tremendous news, we were looking weak at the back without kalas  but still think we need to replace Malone for our stating eleven to be as good as the one that finished last season.

Tremendous news, we were looking weak at the back without kalas  but still think we need to replace Malone for our stating eleven to be as good as the one that finished last season.

We need our starting 11 to be stronger than the 11 that finished last season, and be as consistent.
As you say no replacement for Malone yet, as well as a couple strikers.
As for the defence, liable to concede goals even with Kalas. I just cannot see where the next clean sheet is coming from.
The fact that the number 5, 9 and 12, shirts are still to be distributed could be an indication that there are other incomings.
With one of the smallest and inexperienced squads in the Division, if Fulham have serious aspirations to get promoted.
Then it's time they stopped penny pinching and invest the Money from sales, that's burning a hole in the Chairmans back sky rocket, otherwise we will fall short again.
That would be ill judged not to, as well as lacking foresight.
There is no cut price cheap formula for getting promotion anymore.
Too many good sides and big clubs are going for it this year.
Up to 12 clubs will seriously fancy their chances, and only 3 will succeed.
Keeping fingers crossed and praying there will be not be too many injuries is not good enough.
It takes a lot more than that.
No matter how good a manager and coach and tactician Jok is, unless he has enough of the right players, he will fall short again, he cannot perform miracles.
To accumulate, a club has to speculate, and cut down the poor errors of judgement, that hamstrings a manager.
On that basis, with the players we have, I feel we are still players shy in key positions, that could of course change within the next month.
But as we have a competitive start against good opponents during August, it would be incompetent as well as negligent if we dropped unnecessary points because of a flawed transfer policy, and we end up next May debating what might have been, what could have been, and what should have been.
Because if we fail to achieve promotion,  it will not be so easy in a years time to hold onto the jewels in the crown, and loanees will only get you so far.
Then of course there is the Manager.
