This is a great signing IMO. I have always really rated him. Think he will do really well with us. Welcome aboard Harry.

A quick Arter precis, courtesy The Bournemouth Echo:

According to the Daily Echo, Fulham are set to profit from Bournemouth's generosity in allowing Harry Arter to go out on loan.
They say that the 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international "completed a medical yesterday" and that the recently relegated Londoners hope "to conclude a switch in the next 24 hours."

Arter joined south coast club Bournemouth for just £4,000 when signing on as a Cherry in 2015 and has progressed to making over 250 appearances for them as they've climbed the league structure – scoring 29 times for them in the process.

94 of those games (three goals/five assists) have come in the Premier League, and a glance further back in his career suggests the worth he will bring to a Fulham side looking to readjust to life in the Sky Bet Championship. At that level, Arter has 74 games worth of experience, 74 games that have led to 12 goals and seven assists.

Last season saw Arter make the temporary switch to Cardiff City, the central midfielder making 25 appearances for the Bluebirds in their unsuccessful battle against relegation from the Premier League.

After being left out of Bournemouth's last two friendly fixtures against Lazio and Lyon, the Echo say that Arter is "expected to complete his switch to Fulham", a club managed by Scott Parker, his brother-in-law.

Arter, who still has two years left to run on his current deal, will join a Fulham side who will be looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat to newly-promoted Barnsley. A player of his quality will surely be able to step straight into the Cottagers line-up and prove to be a positive influence on their upcoming fixtures

People were saying the likes of Seri and Anguissa were great signings this time last year. His football that he plays with us will ultimately tell us if he's a great signing or not, but I am confident he can be. Really like what I have seen from him.

Seen more of him playing for Ireland than the Cherries but he strikes me as a hard working if not overly talented player. But an upgrade on what we've got so a good signing.

Good signing I think. He could add some bite and fight to our midfield which we'll need.
Never knew that Scotty married Arter's sister?!? Think of that whatever you want regarding the decision to join us.

I note on the highlights KMac turned and went ballistic at his defenders at one point!

Not over the moon with this signing, may be solid but just one i can't get excited about
I think we need a CM who can spray the ball to the wingers (Knock/Cava) if we are going to be successful. Arter is not known for his passing ability to put it nicely
Hope he proves me wrong! I think he will do alright

Arter isn't a DM though, he'd more likely be taking StefJo's place as he's a box to box player rather than a holding midfielder. Signing Besic sees the end of Kmac

My worry.    Yes, we replaced a slow Mac with a slightly less slow...but grittier CDM.

The team is still incredibly slow and short.

I like the upgrade on MacDonald though.

He's not a holding midfielder and he never was for Bournemouth - Surman was always the player that sat behind Arter, who was deployed as an 8 playing box to box

For me, he replaces StefJo in the team. But what the team needs overall is higher intensity in the centre of the pitch, and I'm not convinced this switch is enough.

Hope not.   If they didn't want him back at Middlesborough I don't want him on Fulham's squad.

Arter is an upgrade on either Mac or Stefjo...so I'm ok with it.

I just could not understand the complacency about having the same middle three as two years ago. Talk about living in the past.!
Two new plus TC  is our only possible patching up solution.

Combative box to box type. Simple but accurate passing generally. Can be a bit volatile and card waiting to happen. Got a good strike on him and capable of spectacular goals.  Industrious hard working player who should do more than a job at this level.

MacDonald pinged a few long balls to Fulham's flanks...but other than that..defensively he was more useless than Stefjo.

I think Stefjo had a bad game.   I don't think Mac can play with more intensity to save his life.   Both should have better players in front of them.

The Sun (I think) in an article about Sess. Said Fulham couldn't buy unless we sold him. Also to be fair the.club could be.targetting.several defenders but just not getting deals done. If we know (and have known for an age) we need  defenders then the Club surely knows it too.

Another loan....Seems we've lost our chequebook, or its all being kept for our bumper centre back signing whoever it is...Coyw

The Sun (I think) in an article about Sess. Said Fulham couldn't buy unless we sold him. Also to be fair the.club could be.targetting.several defenders but just not getting deals done. If we know (and have known for an age) we need  defenders then the Club surely knows it too.

Why can't we buy unless we sell sess.
Nearly Every other club in the league has spent money on players, why is it affecting us?
Could it be that we spent a £100m last season and have yet to sell a player. No Other championship club will have a record like that.
Remember we still have Bryan, Le Marchand, Myson and Mitrovic playing from last season's buys and Anguissa and Seri out on loan.

Just what our old, slow midfield needs, another old, slow midfielder...

Cairney 28
StefJo 28
KMac 30

Yep - they might as well retire.

The "our CMs are too old / too slow" argument is laughable. None of them were fast when we got promoted (less than 2 years ago) - by your logic, are you saying players are past it at 27 these days?

In a team with a few issues ATM, CM isn't top if the list of things that need changing. Tactics? Maybe. We are- and always have been - a team who are MUCH better with the ball so need to play tactics that allow us to dominate it with ball players who know how to  retain it - TC and KMac fit this mould (StefJo hit and miss passing-wise admittedly).

The CM worked with a team high press (where StefJo excels with the amount of grass he covers on his "old" legs..), and KMac dropping into defence when we have the ball to allow fast, attacking FBs to push forward. Therefore fast attacking FBs are what we need and the right tactics for this team - not breaking up a proven Champ CM set. We have the players to make this work so WHy are we not doing it? Tactics are the problem - not old / slow CM.

BTW not saying augmenting with Arter is a bad thing - far from it.

Also think O'Riley needs to be given a chance this season. There needs to be a point where our best young prospects get given a chance to prove themselves and grow here - otherwise we face another Harvey Elliott situation of losing our best young talent to higher up teams on the cheap.

Arter Joins On Loan

The Club is delighted to confirm the loan signing of Harry Arter from AFC Bournemouth.

The deal keeps the 29-year-old at Craven Cottage for the duration of the 2019/20 season, and could be made permanent next summer.

An industrious and committed central midfield player, Arter played a starring role as Bournemouth won the Sky Bet Championship title in 2015, and was subsequently named as both the Club's and the PFA Fans' Player of the Year.

That was the second time Arter had helped the Cherries to a promotion, after they finished as League One runners-up in 2013.

Upon signing, Arter said: "I'm delighted to be here. Fulham is a fantastic club with a lot of ambition who want to get back to the Premier League, and I hope I can help them achieve that this season."

Tony Khan added: "Harry Arter's arrival at Fulham Football Club will strengthen our midfield and gives us another experienced and proven player who's contributed to his former club's promotion from the Championship.

"Harry's a great fit for our squad, and we believe he'll help us achieve our main objective, a return to the Premier League. Come on Fulham!"

Arter will wear the number 18 shirt this season.

A London boy, Arter came through Charlton Athletic's academy before joining Woking in the summer of 2009. He was only in non-league for one season, though, with his performances attracting the attention of Eddie Howe and his staff at Bournemouth.

A key component in the Cherries midfield as they climbed the leagues, Arter has made 255 appearances for the club, while he's also chipped in with 29 goals and 20 assists.

After playing 69 times in the Premier League for Bournemouth, he got further top flight experience under his belt last season on loan at Cardiff City.

Eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland through his grandparents, Arter won his first cap in June 2015, and now has 15 senior caps to his name.

It's a fair point, but McDonald did look alarmingly immobile in the loss to Barnsley.

Your fair to point out that pace was never a part of his game anyway, so maybe put it down to early season rustiness and hope it improves with game time.

This age thingy ... in my book one of our best-ever midfielders didn't join us until he was 30 .... and gave us several excellent years. So let's not write people off in their twenties.

Having said that, I think the jury's out on Arter. Did reasonably well in the Championship for Bournemouth, less well in the Premier League.  From the little I saw and heard, didn't over-impress at Cardiff. On the plus side, he does look like someone who commits himself to the cause, which is always a positive.

Good if not great signing, he will at least put some tackles in. I see him as a very similar player to Parker, both are guilty of playing the safe pass too often but both work very hard.

KMac isn't regular-starter-in-the-Prem quality, but has proven in spades he knows how to play in this league over a consistent period of time with THE RIGHT FORMATION / TACTICS.

People writing them off as "too old / too slow / get rid" etc. after one game is comically short-sighted given what they have proved as a unit at over a considerable period of time at this level little over a year ago. Come on people.

Great news about Arter- welcome to the club and another player proven at this level. Let's hope at the grand old age of 29, we can get the odd 5-10 minutes out of him yet before he's made into glue ;)

A good signing, a player with good Championship experience who can hit the ground running and provide options in a midfield that was looking thin. With O'Riley looking for game time the midfield should be good enough to get us through the season.
Also it begins to look as if Parker may be having a say in signings which is encouraging.

When I checked out the Cardiff fans view when we were first linked. The general consensus seemed most of them felt they'd absolutely like him to come back, but not if it cost them what they really needed which was a striker.
On paper, a player that is a good rotation option with the potential ability to start in midfield in place of Stefjo or Kmac. We'll see which one it is soon enough.

Welcome Harry!

I put Arter in the category of Terry Hurlock and expect there to be more injuries during training to our own players.
He goes into tackles without any control, think the Cardiff game against City he got away with two sending off tackles and a few more in other games. With our capabilities of not defending freekicks well it does not bode well. Expect him to be the first player to get a bookings ban.
