Title: We lost it at The Hawthorns
Post by: Riversider on July 22, 2020, 09:53:12 PM
West Brom were there for the taking, it was a must win game and yet we basically set up for a point, we could and should have been celebrating promotion tonight, and that's without talking about Luton, Charlton and Hull etc
West Brom away will haunt Scott Parker and all Fulham supporters.

I don't think we set up for a point, I just think we were not good enough. Scott and the players knew the importance, and no way in hell did we aim for just one point.

We lost it all season. Said it before, you got drop points in half your games and expect to go up in automatic promotion.

And yet that is exactly what WBA did (more than half, in fact) so clearly you don't know what you are talking about.

Yes we lost games we should have won but then again so have Brentford as have West Brom. Every team can look back over the season and fine reasons for not doing better. Get over it, we will win the playoffs  049:gif

It would only have taken Knockaert's shot to be a couple of inches lower and we would be celebrating tonight - such fine margins.........

What would we be celebrating? Not going up on goal difference? Wigan have more to complain about tonight. They could have won the game and saved themselves from relegation. Notts Forest blew it badly over the last games as did Brentford. We made the playoffs and there were plenty of fans on here who a few weeks ago were doubting that that was going to happen. Every team can pick plenty of moments when things could have been different. But we frankly have not looked great since returning from the lock down.

Exactly this 👆🏻.
It's a long season, every club could point to games they should/could have won, but overall Leeds and West Brom have occupied the top 2 for most of the year. We've been in the next group down all season and are in with a chance like the rest of that group.
I've been vocal this season about my thoughts on this team and how they will get swept aside over a 2 legged playoff game due to their weakness, however the last 6 games I have seen another side to them and think we have as good a shot as anyone.

We finished two points below West Brom who had a better goal difference.

We certainly didn't get on the front foot and take the game to them, a 3-2 defeat going for it in a must win game would have been far more admirable than a dull turgid nil nil draw in a game we had to win,
I bet WBA came off the pitch not believing their luck that night,
WBA were there for the taking, we just needed to show the same belief as Barnsley did at Brentford, as I've said before Parker has a greater fear of losing than he does of not winning.

Yes it is all ifs and buts. At least we are in the play offs with as good a chance as any of the others.
Part of the problem this season is that the expectations were too high from the start, so the chances of disappointment was going to be higher for some. If we are looking for blame then a
combination of lack of application and work rate from certain players who should have performed better. Not enough urgency throughout the team in a number of matches. Poor leadership at times of trouble on the pitch.
The system of play was I thought too slow a tempo, we rarely seem to counter attack in numbers quick enough. Some poor defending and lack of quality in defence with a soft underbelly for the first half of the season undermined our football, and when after Hector started playing, we became more difficult to beat and were a lot tighter all round, but with that the goals dried up. So they seemed to solve it at one end which created a problem at the other. But overall our defence is poor with a mistake waiting to happen.
I am actually not that disappointed because lioking at the squad I never ever thought we were good enough to go up automatically and sadly that has been proved right.
However, we do have a chance to go up via the play offs, no more than 50/50 because they can be a lottery with pot holes and obstacles in the way.
So now that we are there, let us embrace it and get behind the team for better or for worse.
If we don't make it, we brush ourselves down, hopefully learn some lessons as to why we failed to finish top three, and go again next season.
It's not going to effect my life where I will lose the will to live. Yes I am gutted when we lose and ecstatic when we win, but you move on to the next match, as the next match is the most important.
If we are in the Championship next season then so be it, we reinforce meet the challenge and go again. If we end up in the Premier League then we had better be well prepared and organised because it will be a long hard season.

For me we didnt lose it at the Hawthorns at all.

We lost to Barnsley opening day of the seasons that I could actually forgive, they were on a high and we were on a hiding to nothing. Losing to them at home was not forgivable worst and thats an absolute worse should have been a draw, losing to Luton as well should have been a point minimum, but the game that really galls me was the 1-1 draw at home to WBA a game we should have won

Incidentally what is your contribution to this forum exactly, I can't ever recall you starting a thread of any great significance, just plenty of snidey replies.

There's a lot of people being unnecessarily nasty to each on here of late. Is it really needed? We all have our own opinions, some posters we will agree with, some we won't, surely that is the idea of a forum?

If every thread was:

Mitro is great!

Yeah he is.

I agree.

+1

So good!

etc

What would be the point?

Personally, I find myself agreeing with a lot of Riversiders posts, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate you guys (and te angle against negativity - I am accused myself sometimes). People aren't negative as they don't love the club, maybe they love it too much and find themselves frustrated?

Anyway, FFS, it's Friday, suns out, we are in the play offs next week. Let's have a beer (after midday, we are not QPR scum) and chill out x

We haven't actually lost it yet. We still have two massive games against Cardiff and hopefully a final at Wembley. COYW!!

As others have said, there have been several occasions throughout the season when this principle applies; and fans of other teams may be feeling the same. What makes it feel more prominent is the fact that it was so recently and so close to the end of the season that the significance is more apparent. Maybe it wasn't the case at all, but it did seem to me that we weren't going for it with everything that second half. Perhaps fear of losing was uppermost, although the risk of not making play-offs was slim.

Hey ho, play-offs it is then.

Yes, but considering all the opportunities this season, we should of got auto promotion, this isn't hindsight. This is down to the way we play. We 'go with the flow' of the match, rarely 'force the issue' in matches.

We didn't just lose it at the Hawthorns but we could have turned it around there.
4th place assured and a free hit in my opinion, set up to win and go for it and see where it takes us  would have been my approach.

Well (without the gamble of the play offs) Brentford (finishing joint third with us) would have been promoted above us because of their superior goal difference.
I'll take that & say we are fortunate as it must be annoying to the Bee's & their supporters who bottled it / lost the plot over the run in.
Hopefully we can deal with Cardiff over 2 legs & then do the same to either Swansea or the Bee's (who are well over due that result from us!)
COYW!!
