Think of those special characters/ favourites we have loved over the years. I don't mean our best players, nationally acclaimed players or most expensive buys but those that have always played there hearts out and given us pleasure because of their character and effort.
Here is my team of my personal favourites :-
Jim Stanard
George Cohen Roger Brown Fred Callaghan Jim Langley
Jimmy Hill Ray Lew Boa Tosh Chamberlin
Brian McBride Ivor
Please lets have your team of all time heart warming players.
Much of the above, but find a place for Bobby Keetch and Stan Brown from that era.

Stan Brown ,of course always gave his best and able to play in different positions. At the back of my mind is a wonderfully headed goal while playing at centre forward, made remarkable because of his lack of height.
Just a little hesitant about Keetch, with him in our side today we would have opponents diving all over the pitch within minutes of the KO
Was thinking about this earlier, far from the best but my favourites as a kid, Peter Scott, Cliff Carr, Gerry Peyton, Jim Stannard, even Clive Walker

Terry Angus, Robbie Herrera
There has to be a place for The Maestro. The likes we have never seen since. He was & will always be Mr Fulham. How many other one club players have we had.?
I would think for anyone who stood on the revered terraces in the long gone '50's it has to be Tosh. :54:

They wouldn't need to dive Keetch would have kicked them down.
But what about Charlie Mitten and Arthur Stevens with Jezzard and Bobby Robson with Haynes completing our 'forward' line?

Got to be Ivor for his cheeky grin and deadly finishing. No mention of Stan Horne our first black player and no nonsense centre half. Jimmy Conway and Les Barrat and finally Brian McBride always remember that wave to the crowd as he was carried off injured after scoring a goal.
I can't comment about alot of the other players that have been mentioned as not in my era but my grandad assures me that all that have been mentioned are worthy of the recognition.
Old Bow Legs Jimmy Langley. Remember one game where Macedo asked where the ball had come from and Langley indicated "between his legs. Killer Keetch was always good value and Jim Stannard was a goalie with a sense of fun. Coming onto the pitch wearing giant glasses. Probably get booked today.

I think Johnny Haynes will top almost any Fulham poll you can think of but I thought this one was more for those players not blessed with his extreme talent but made up for it with effort ,character and even humour. For me Tosh tops this poll.

You are from my era, Haynes, Robson Jezzard. Wow, our best strike force ever, Newcastle wanted to buy the three of them I understand.
Sorry they are just too good for this thread which is not for the best but for those we remember more for effort and character.

Fully agree, there has never been anyone since who you could take to your heart as much as Tosh.
I'm putting in a word for Vic Halom. "ave im Vic"
I think Simon Morgan should be well up there on the list and no one has mentioned him. 092.gif
Rufus!!! Always guaranteed to spark a game into life, whether a cracking tackle, surging run or a bit of a dust up. 🙂
I agree with Stan Brown and of course JH. Even though he left foe a few years, Alan Mullery.
Well they had that as well but if not enough then add Jimmy Hill and Eddie Lowe?

Just beginning the definitive book about Johnny Haynes by Ken Cotton and others. Wonderful photos of Johnny as a young player. In his district rep team he was half the size of the other players. Oh to see footage of the schoolboy international at Wembley in 1950 when he first burst onto the scene. :54:

Surprised no mention of John Pantisil so far. Very much a character but I didn't become Fulham until 15 years ago so I only know players before that time from you lot.
Best & Marsh were certainly characters, as was Bullard.

So right, loyal to us all through such a bad period and a really hard grafting defender. I wonder where he is now.

Yes, when drafting my team I did hesitate between Rufus and Jim Langley.
We havn't had a better left back than him since he moved on.

Mullery was a top player and really fits into this category on his return from Spurs when he proved such a good leader.

Wasnt the header aginst West Brom at the Hammy end?
Maurice Cook, always enjoyed Haynes glaring at him.
Tosh, Langley, Lawler, Keetchie, the Maestro, Terry Angus, Dracula Hewkins, Arthur Stevens, the irrepressible David Lloyd, The Traveller, Mo Cook, Rufus, Barry Hayles, Boa, Melvin Tenner, and loads more. 049:gif

It was at the Hammy End, I was close to it and had a perfect view.
Terry Angus is a good shout.
Remember him, when he was injured getting in amongst our fans at Orient, I think
One thing often forgotten about the much underrated and tough tackling Bobby Keetch is that few opposition "centre forwards" would go near him. Off the pitch he was a charming and cultured man, very interested in art, but few high cost strikers kept their distance in matches. :bump:

Pantsil was class, as was Rufus. Unsung hero from the bad old days of late 80's early 90's was Jeff Eckhardt. A real 100 percenter. And Gary Brazil.

John Paintsil, that lap after the final whistle was just outstanding
Roger Brown deserves a mention imo. What a man.

Roger Brown was a great character and the Gale/Brown partnership at centre back was superb, possibly as good as the more recent Hangeland Hughes .
Can't remember a centre back scoring as many goals as Brown did for us in that promotion season.
Our centre backs don't seem to score goals these days.
Got to have Bobby Keetch, Fred Callaghan, Les Strong and of course Allan Clarke to put his hands on his hips when Haynes failed to pass to him. Patsil too !

Maurice was a mate of my brothers so I met him several times. As a twelve year old I had never heard a man who fitted so many swear words into one sentence.

Some great and much loved characters from the past have been mentioned in this thread and it is now tempting to draw comparisons with our current players.
We have good players right now and you could argue that overall the quality is a lot better than it was when many of the old favourites were playing.
I am still addicted to Fulham and totally enjoy visits to the Cottage but really can't find characters who display the fun and enthusiasm that these old players brought into our lives.
