Title: We can Still Catch Burnley...We have to play them yet...
Post by: Steeeeeeeeeed on April 21, 2021, 11:01:55 PM
First they have to lose to Wolves, and West Ham...very possible.

Then we have to beat Chelsea. Usually not very likely, but the game is sandwiched between their two games with Real Madrid...Never a better chance...

Then we play Burnley... Beat them and we are out of the bottom 3 on goal difference.

It ain't over (yet).

If a) Burnley lose 1-0 to Liverpool, Wolves, West Ham, Leeds and Fulham; and b) Fulham beat Southampton 1-0, plus c) we only lose by two goals to Chelsea and ManUtd; then we enter the final day on 33 points with a goal difference advantage of 4 goals over Burnley and playing against Newcastle.

This is a very achievable goal, and if we can get points against Chelsea or ManUtd it's an unplanned bonus. Of course, like anyone in 18th place we depend on the teams above us failing but I am certain they (either Burnley or Brighton) will drop 12-18 points, so the big question is can we get 6-10 points. For example, after Brighton's next game, it is easy to see them not getting another point.

It's very possible, much depends on others, we are no longer in control of our own destiny. We will have a much better idea after the next set of matches in the Premiership, it removes the games in hand other teams have.

Yea loving the hope, and it's not over but looking very doubtful right now,
can't predict the games. Who would have thought Newcastle would pull away.

Stop clutching at short straws and jus remember that to win matches you have to score goals and we have demonstrated  time and again that we cannot do that.

The continually 'passing back' mindset is the problem. I can't think of any other team that does it as much. Are we scared of losing the ball?

Against Everton, for the first time I can remember, when we got deep into Everton's half we rarely passed the ball back into our own half. For the most part we crossed, tried to beat players, etc. We created loads of chances, we scored a couple, on the night it should have been more. Maja could have easily scored 4.

There is only one way to get out this , and its play like we did against Liverpool at home in the first half. and that's for every game left for 94 mins.

Wolves generally don't score in the first half of matches. Wolves are a second half team. They lost some key players, Jota and injuries to Jimanez.

If we win all our remaining games we will have forty two points which may/should be enough.

I know it is looking gloomy; but it was after Juve scored at CC to make it 4-1 on aggregate.  We didn't all leave the ground at that point.

I do get it is different with our lack of goals being the obvious factor BUT for the sake of a couple of mins of loss of concentration/bad luck or whatever we would have had another 3 points from out last 2 games.  Small margins as Scotty always loves to say.

I am not a fan of Scotty's style; the lack of positivity on the pitch is so frustrating.  Like everyone else I'm sure, I am so angry at the end of our matches at the style, the missed opportunities etc.  BUT by the time the next one comes along I am full of hope again.  Crazy but that is what supporting a team like Fulham is like.

We are not down yet.  We have to keep believing until we can't anymore.

My concern is Brighton and Burnely will pickup points. We could beat them but overall, they are better than us and they have enough games to ensure they get some points.

That being said, confidence is a big factor. I can't see Burnely losing the next two but if they did and we somehow win, there is massive pressure on them and everything goes out the window.

Hear me out here... I think we can catch Southampton on GD.. we are 9 points behind. If you look at their fixtures, they are the most likely not to get another point. If we can beat Burnley, Southampton and Newcastle (all possible), we can go above them even with a loss to Chelsea and Man Utd

West Ham has something to play for, these won't be formalities. Wolves will want to try to get close to 7th as possible, their previous finish. If these teams didn't have an incentive, then things would be different.

The big worry is 'Sheff Utd', they play Burnley, Brighton and Newcastle. How will they play, show some pride?

Sometimes teams play much better when it's confirmed they are down, no pressure and players trying to put themselves in the shop window. Let's be honest, no PL player wants to play in the Championship

Want to impress the new manager, contracts next season, pride - to show how good they  are really against these teams above them, all possible reasons that they might give opponents a game.

Look out our results last time, one we  knew we were relegated from the Prem.

Of course its not over and you cant give up.  But the reality is we keep hoping other teams fail and it has never panned out.  Each team we are chasing has picked up points in spots we never thought they could.  Newcastle looked dreadful and then won 2 in a row and they look safe now.  1 Burnley win and its pretty much over.

We literally need a perfect run of results (both good and bad) and that happening feels like a 1/100.

We were there during the Great Escape season, an o.k. team and excellent manager, this is arguably a better squad, with a good/bad. manager.

That team had rock solid PL players. Brede, Hughes, Murphy, Davies, McBride, Bullard, Dempsey. Not seeing players like that in this squad.

Absolutely no comparison between that team & our current one, look at the strikers we had back then.

Not sure how you reach the view that this is arguably a better squad? Firstly I don't see the "automatic selections" as better than Hughes and Hangeland, Dempsey and McBride, Murphy and Digger etc. Secondly I don't think this squad as a whole has remotely the depth or balance that Roy's squad had.

Most of Roy's squad had experience of the Premiership, very few of the current squad has experience of the Premiership. I don't think this squad has been 'utilized' to their full potential by Parker, it's been 'sporadic' at best.

Face facts, this goal drought isn't suddenly going away, it has been with us all season more importantly since the winter window,  so the signing of Maja didn't solve the problem. No sign of Parker changing tactics so we can expect about three goals maximum from the last five games, assuming we still have a bit of luck left for an own goal and another penalty.

There really is nothing left to grasp that can give us the slightest hope of catching Newcastle, Burnley or Brighton.
Start thinking of Championship survival.

Look guys it's not the terrible tactics or the awful build up play that kills us...it's the hope.

I have stopped hoping that Parker will suddenly realise Cav and RLC will never score and drops them for anyone at all. It isn't going to happen. We needed someone to hold the ball up against Arsenal, so he took off Maja and brought on RLC...amazing. And guess what RLC three touches, three times he lost the ball.

Give up hope, build for the future at least West Brom will not overtake us for a few games yet, but we are not suddenly going to score unless Parker somehow drops his propensity for playing just one forward in any game.

It is still possible to survive but I am going to sound like a broken record, unless we play with two Strikers I can't see us getting favourable results! We have missed our opportunities to win games when others around us have mucked up.
We have a slim chance of doing it but COYW.

I think Parker is looking beyond Cav's and RLC, he sees himself as the 'Messiah', hoping to turn Cav and RLC into 'gold dust'. They suffer from the same an inability to find a quick pass. There has been fleeting moments, but those players are on a downward trajectory.

I still believe.
