Title: NFR Just reading an article on Rugby in England
Post by: rogerpbackinMidEastUS on October 14, 2022, 04:40:53 AM
It  appears that many of the clubs are in financial 'difficulty.'
Worcester have been "wound up" and one of the giants of world
club rugby, Wasps, are seeemingly going into administration
within the next few days.

It is amazing how this hasn't happened before, since the professional game, and vast
wages paid to top players.
It would be sad if the demise grows and affects more clubs.
I would like some US businesmen to step in and take over some clubs, or spnsorships.
and make the game flourish over here (in the US) as well.
Top teams, especially Internationals have had huge gates over here, much like the NFL games played in England.
I'd hate to see it totally Americanized though.
Looking close to home, all of the clubs that are/were within spitting distance of Fulham.
(not including Rochdale Hornets !)

London Irish
London Scottish
London Welsh
Richmond
Rosslyn Park
Harlequins
Saracens
Wasps
Ealing
Blackheath  !!
Staines (who I played few games for in their youth team when they were in Feltham)
London Sevens
Middlesex sevens
and of course Twickers stadium.

A lack of TV time is a big problem, I think more coverage would solve a lot of the financial
problems.
Oh well, it's still a fantatic game and i really hope to see more over here.

"Come on you Quins"   and sadness for the memory of Roslyn Park

It's just not a popular sport. Living beyond their means too.

International rugby union is a huge thing, lots of support and money generated but funds shouldn't be fed down the the club teams.

Smaller leagues? Ground sharing? Rugby League seem to live within their means, does mean some players have 2 jobs to make ends meet but if that's where union needs to go them so be it.

Not every sport can be popular and a money spinner.

I love Rugby Union it's a great sport played by real men, like Rugby League. I certainly enjoy watching England at International Level.
The likes of Sky should give it more coverage to pump money into the sport, and not show so much football which is becoming a stage for play acting and cheating and indulging millionaires especially the pundits who are unable to have a command of the English language.
