Interesting tactical decision by Marco to drop Joao in between the CBs in possession and push the FBs well up the pitch.

Well we did. They scored that goal because of an idiotic move from Robinson. Not because of their brilliant play.

Willian probably shouldn't have made the run he did in the first place to give Robinson the option to do that, but Antonee has to know better.

It is a throw in we use all the time and generally to really good effect. Usually do it higher up the pitch however. Very dangerous there and just got horribly wrong. Yet another mistake leading to a goal this year..already more than the whole of last season. So frustrating as been decent in the main.

Villa should be out of sight at half time. We have provided very little going forward and made cheap, silly mistakes in midfield. Can't wait to see what we can change at half time.

Only going on GJs commentary - they seem to be getting better chances than us. More one-on-ones? Have to admit, the stats are fairly even. I just don't remember many times that we have had a clear chance on goal.

Pretty even game but we've made two mistakes for their only two shots on target and they scored one. Nightmares. Decent up to the final third but only one shot on target ourselves with 7 attempts. Subs early with our strong bench. Iwobi for BDR I'd say after 55 mins if we haven't scored.
Title: Re: Villa (H) - 17 Feb
Post by: SerbianLad on February 17, 2024, 03:57:24 PM
Negatives: Too many sloppy mistakes. Robinson all over the place, and I don't just mean that because of their goal. Andreas started slowly but woken up since. BDR needs to be subbed off at half time, I might even be tempted to put Adama on. Moreno loves to go forward and Adama could use the space he leaves behind.

Positives:we were the better team before conceding. Had some nice moments since.

1) That throw in was woeful all round.  Willian should never have made that run, and Robinson shouldn't have been stupid enough to throw it towards the centre of the pitch that close to our own goal.

2) Nothing is going right at the other end.  A few snapshots from Muniz and Pereira that didn't come close to threatening their goal.  Only notable chance was from the corner.

3) Remember when we were playing Bassey at RCB and how Arsenal exploited that?  Well, they've got two left footed CBs playing and we really should be getting at Lenglet who is playing at RCB.  Force him in to silly mistakes.

Can't really think of someone who'd be playing better than a 5 or 6 out of 10 at the moment.

Marco needs to bite the bullet on some early subs.

Get Wilson on for Bobby and Adama to test their high line.

Averaging around 0.04 xG per shot.

Watching how both Villa defenders use their upper bodies to move attackers off balance it does strike me how little of that Diop does.

To me that is where Diop could have done better in that scrum. He's a big dude. Use your body more.

Muniz header from a corner was the closest we've come.

Not a bad first half, yes, a bit sloppy, but on balance fairly good.  Pereira had great chance to shoot inside box and I thought made poor decision to cross it.  Got lucky on VAR review, thought Villa could have got that 2nd goal, although I did think the Ream goal looked good too.  Pereira making some excellent crosses/passes.

Again, I thought Leno should have done better on the Watkins score.  Yes, sloppy giveaway and throw in, but he's got to do much better.  Credit for the stop at the end of stoppage time, but I would have expected a good keeper to make it.  FFC need to score first in second half, I fear if Villa make it two nil, game over.  Come on Fulham!

Left footed CB on the right hand side.  Remember Arsenal exploiting Bassey earlier in the season.

Shame frigging Broja isn't about today. Muniz has been pretty good but with their high line Broja has a bit of pace to run in behind. Wilson or Adama could be a good shout as well for BDR with Iwobi coming on for Willian later. We haven't created nearly enough so early subs a must Marco.

Quote from: FFC In Oz on February 17, 2024, 03:59:32 PM1) That throw in was woeful all round.

Get Wilson on for Bobby and Adama to test their high line.

bit harsh on tc who hasnt put a foot wrong and looked eager to get the ball forward. but everyone else even including willian  has been off, still getting the ball in dangerous areas so all is not lost

Me too. At least Willian looked dangerous at times. BDR was very poor. Hopefully he can improve in the second half. If not Adama/Wilson to come on.

Surely an injury of Willian which isn't good if so. Either that or madness instead of BDR. Iwobi is however better off the left.

What a pass through by Muniz! We have not seen enough of that part of his game, he slotted it through two players perfectly.

Villa time wasted about 15 minutes. Disgraceful.

Tough loss.  Too bad Traore couldn't convert.  That's always been his shortcoming, failures to finish.  Oh well.....

5 yellows in 10 minutes must be a world record.

Christ almighty how did we lose that? Mistakes cost us yet again. Great effort second half but just couldn't score the second. So frustrating.

Quote from: Willham on February 17, 2024, 04:58:53 PMNot saying he should have, as he had the right to take the shot 100% but muniz was inside and in front of his man and we've seen how good a poacher Muniz can be.

What a pass through by Muniz! We have not seen enough of that part of his game, he slotted it through two players perfectly.

He's in a rich vein. Long may it continue- happy for the kid.

Thought they played "OK", but they are not good enough to give away goals.

Quote from: Drewry66 on February 17, 2024, 04:06:33 PMShame frigging Broja isn't about today. Muniz has been pretty good but with their high line Broja has a bit of pace to run in behind. Wilson or Adama could be a good shout as well for BDR with Iwobi coming on for Willian later. We haven't created nearly enough so early subs a must Marco.

No, I don't. Bassey played LCB in both matches against Arsenal. Perhaps you're referring to the Spurs match.

I was indeed.

Wrong North London team haha

Taking a trip in the what-if machine, i wonder what a halftime iwobi-for-bdr swap would have looked like.  If life is brought into the side, Willian could have found an immaculate cross or two as he is know to do and we might have walked away 5-2 winners...

Disappointing result after a great second half come-back. It's positive that we can now compete with top half teams, but still too many mistakes and inconsistent performances. I thought the initial team selection was understandable in man-management terms but it felt a bit too negative. Good that Muniz has scored again.

Ref really lost control of that towards the end.

The amount of yellows we were copping for dissent whilst Martinez & Co could do whatever they want in regards to wasting time.

Poor first half with too many mistakes. Better second half but cannot score. Ref on his debut missed a blatant back pass and books our player for co0mplaing when there is a clear corner that the ref thinks is a goal kick. Then wants to show off by throwing yellow cards about to make him look good.

Thought we were poor but not sadly as poor as the referee. Needs time in the lower leagues to learn the game.

Optus sport 6 was the channel I watched and secondary commentator had something against us for sure, talked about villa's domination throughout the game, but I feel that was a very close contest, I feel we had the better of the gane overall, they were very clinical and sprung on our mistakes, it's what they do. Unlucky not to get a point really
