This playing out around the press hasn't been very effective so far

Without Mitro we lack the ability to mix it up and go long but we're getting repeatedly penned in playing out form the back first at Everton and now slightly less so here

We really lose so much when Palhinha isn't in the team

We usually dominate the middle of the pitch with him but our back line have very little covering there atm

Yup
He was bound to be rusty but seems his usual self. Hard to justify dropping him for Bassey, Bassey will have to earn his spot if Ream has a consistant dip in form

Raul has done absolutely nothing. Got to get Vini on. We're playing far too slowly. Giving their fullbacks too much space.
It's been another rubbish performance.

Bobby off for Adama and Wilson off for willian

Title: Re: Brentford (H) - 19 August
Post by: SerbianLad on August 19, 2023, 03:51:35 PM
Thought our defence (apart from the Diop error obviously) and midfield were great. BDR and Wilson not doing nearly enough. I'd honestly swap both for Willian and Adama at half time. Jimenez looks like he's starting to tire a bit so hopefully Vini will come on at some point too.
Title: Re: Brentford (H) - 19 August
Post by: jayffc on August 19, 2023, 03:52:15 PM
Shouldn't be a goal down, a draw a fair reflection of that half and wouldn't be down if not for that calamitous back pass, not Diops first time being caught out like that.

We still look devoid of ideas up top and weaker in central mid without Mitro and Willian  and Palhinha respectively.

Lukic still looks slow in his decision making and Reed not  quite has last seasons heights without Joao alongside him
No close link up play alongside and off of Jimi either he's too isolated

Very averagee performance so far.

Title: Re: Brentford (H) - 19 August
Post by: LittleErn on August 19, 2023, 03:53:45 PM
We're playing nice controlled football but really not creating anything. We have no cutting edge and, just as important, we lack a hold up man who can control the long ball out of defence until support arrives. Jimenez is not the answer on current showing. Maybe time to give Vinicius another chance. Brentford are no better but they have the gift of an unearned goal.
Title: Re: Brentford (H) - 19 August
Post by: Grassy Noel on August 19, 2023, 03:56:18 PM
I am all for Vini coming on provided that the ball is played to his feet and not every other part of his anatomy.
Title: Re: Brentford (H) - 19 August
Post by: Caedal on August 19, 2023, 03:57:44 PM
I feel like this system just doesn't work without a very specific type of striker. This is the issue with designing an entire tactical system around 1 player. We were very lucky last week as we played very poorly, and we've been bad again today.
We don't have enough pace in the side to play with 2 wide players. The central midfield is getting overrun like it was against Everton.
We play so slowly, so it's easy to defend against us. Plus we always give up a lot of goal scoring opportunities, and rely on Leno to keep us in games.

Post by: Drewry66 on August 19, 2023, 03:58:19 PM
Brentford are sitting very deep with two banks of four and are organised. It is tough to break down. Actually thought RJ held the ball up pretty well but no space at all. Been even and should be 0 - 0. Diop is a disaster waiting to happen on the ball and just never looks confident. Done that a few times now.
Title: Re: Brentford (H) - 19 August
Post by: akf on August 19, 2023, 03:59:36 PM
It feels like we are doing well. We are passing the ball around well (except when errors lead to goals).  We are getting in pretty good positions, but not creating chances.

We have 4 shots to their 8, 0 on target to their 4, 1 shot from w/i the penalty box to their 6, 0 goals to their 1.  We need to start taking chances.

2nd week in a row so flat in the 1st half. Need more creativity on the pitch, but other than Willian there isn't much on the bench. May have to get TC out there for Reed but would be concerned how much more open that would make things.

Think we were decent but looked devoid of attacking ideas. Defended generally well, midfield was ok. Thought Lukic looked good today. Not his fault that we create almost no good runs (against an admittedly ultra defensive Brentford). Hard to break down such teams, and unfortunately they got a very undeserved lucky break.

Think we are clearly the better team.

We should stick with Raul, think Vini will have no chance against such a low block. If Willian is ready, we could really use him.

Clinton Morrison seemed to think it was a farce decision, yet the referee expert seem to think it was fine. For me, it really shows the gulf between what ref's think, and assume they know, and what players who played the game at the highest level think. A stark difference and as always, it won't change because the guys who officiated the game into the gutter, are the guys training the current generation coming through.

Having contact means sod all. 5 mins before that decision, Brentford defender body checks Andreas blocking his way towards the ball in the box and nothing was given. So somebody will have to explain the double standards.

Bracing myself for a long season this year. Squad doesn't seem in the right place and we're rather fortunate to win our first away. Poor performance today. Mitrovic about to lose and Jimenez looks way off the races and we'll need to rely on a new player to cover the holes. Pretty deflating stuff on the back of a local Derby loss at home.

In fairness the starting lineup was never going to make an impression on Brentford.

To be fair, this Diop-Bassey is the partnership I was expecting in centre defence for the season.

Through almost 2 matches, the team has looked quite poor.  A lot of side to side and backwards, but going forward the patterns of play are missing.  Long season, but its been pretty ugly so far.

As for the PK, the tell-tale sign of it not being a PK is the players reaction.  If they kick up their legs or flail their legs, its usually embellisment. Yes Ream is slightly on the wrong side but my biggest problem with refs and penalties is when they "bail out" players looking for it and not giving true penalties.

Having contact means sod all. 5 mins before that decision, Brentford defender body checks Andreas blocking his way towards the ball in the box and nothing was given. So somebody will have to explain the double standards.

Ream made contact with his foot. That shouldn't be worse than blocking off but it is much easier for a referee to give.

I'm worried but I won't be blaming the ref today. Morrison just said 'even though it probably wasn't a pen or a sending off, Brentford would probably have won this game anyway and have been the much better team'. Wasn't able to go today so haven't watched but sounds like we're getting what we deserve.

Unless we spend a significant amount of money we're in trouble. Absolutely zero attacking threat. Defence gives up far too many chances, both Everton and Brentford had xG of almost 3. It is extremely difficult to win games when you're giving up so many easy chances. Yes there are freak results like last week, but it isn't sustainable.

Don't understand all the moaning about the team looking poor. We are missing our two best players. What's on the pitch is a collection of journeymen (sans Leno). Reasonably solid but no exceptional skills. Take away Diop's bonehead pass and a dodgy penalty call and we are even. Course, if frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their arses.

I agree that we probably wouldn't have won because I can't see where a goal would have come from, but I don't agree that Brentford have been the better team. Without a gift from us and a gift from the Ref they wouldn't have scored either.

We aren't

We lost from a penalty that wasn't a penalty and Diop giving them a complete gift.

We don't deserve a win but a 0-0 draw would have been a fair result it's Not like they've created much off their own back either.

We were brighter early in Second half and still had time to make adjustments with subs but the red card killed it and now we're here. On the end of a 3-0 hammering

A joke

I've managed to catch glimpses of the match but not been overly impressed. Where im at, they have sky sports on and that was Morrisons assessment. He suggested the pen and sending off weren't justified but as mentioned, said we weren't the better side. Looking at the stats alone, as I'll watch the game back later, but I reckon I'll find it hard to disagree with him. We're losing 3 nil at home to local rivals less their best player, with a poor xg rating....maybe I'll agree but finding it hard to believe.

One goal we gave them, one goal the ref gave them, but the third they scored all by themselves.

1-0 would be a fair result. They were the better team.

We are missing a big, physical presence up front. Just not generating shots on target.  :-(

Well, Mitro is no longer a Fulham player and Palhinha will most likely be suspended (and possibly injured) for quite a few games this season...

If we can't play better football than this without Palhinha (and Mitro...) we will 100% be relegated. Very poor game. Everton was even worse, just a fluke win.
