Title: Leno vs Raya
Post by: jayffc on September 21, 2023, 07:47:26 PM
Had lunch with an arsenal buddy today and he boldly stated "I think Leno is a decent keeper but only up to a certain level. I think both Arsenal keepers are better than him, ramsdale can get you top 4, I think Raya is a league winning level GK"

He did explain he basis this also on on ball ability to play out from the back...

So... Raya vs Leno, who takes it? Who would you prefer

Some arsenal fans truly are a breed unto themselves  :slap:

Leno is so ridiculously clear of both it's not funny.

Raya is one of the biggest stat padders around and will be found out massively.

With big clubs fans players will only get the credit when they're at a big club. They're all c*nts who think they are better and know better. Best ignored and left to discuss the 'big match' from super Sunday around the water dispenser in the office on Mondays

The whole conversation around ball playing goalkeepers is ridiculous. Yes, you want a keeper to be able to pass a ball but to be fair they are professional footballer.

A keepers main responsibility is to keep goals out. They'll have more of an impact on how many points you pick up in a season than any ball passing abilities.

If we keep in mind we are a ball playing team, I wouldn't say Leno's distribution is bad- for anyone to suggest so is just silly and shows a lack of understanding about the game.

Onana signed for United and was hailed as a top ball playing goalkeeper. I don't think that's helped them at all. I remember when Bravo signed for Man City, his ball playing skills didn't help them and in fact I think, if I remember correctly, it cost them, on a few occasions. Yes you get goalkeepers like Ederson who can do both, but picking a goalkeeper because they can pass is a sure way to achieve nothing.

And yes, Leno is as good as both Ramsdale and Raya.

Anyway just my view

Arsenal bought Ramsdale for £37m and are about to buy Raya for £40m.

Arsenal sold Leno for £8m.

Arsenal are absolute mugs!!

To be serious though, of the three keepers, I do think Raya has something a bit special about him so he's probably just about number 1.

I would have Leno a close second with Ramsdale 3rd.

Incredible business though to get him for the price we did. It's roughly what we bout Van Der Saar for 20 years ago!

I totally understand the current thinking of what's required for a modern keeper (I'm a qualified goalkeeping coach) but I truly believe some managers are blinkered in this area.

There's an old saying "putting the cart before the horse" which comes to mind.

as an ex keeper myself - Leno all day long.  Positional sense, shot stopping, calmness, one v one, ball control, got it all.

imho.....think he is the BEST we ever had even after 1 season, place him higher then EVDS / Scharwz et all..... so lucky to have him

It's been a bit of a meme with my arsenal buddy all last season with Ramsdale as both were constantly in and out of the team of month/team of the year in various polls, but overall leno won out on top by consensus in the end but it was tight. This was mainly on fan/player voting which tends to skew towards big clubs anyway so I think it was probably more Leno than the results showed.

For me though, rose tinted glasses aside, I think Leno, even when you factor in the 'playing from the back' rule at the moment, is just a better GK, BUT with the caveat that Ramsdale has a potential higher ceiling when you factor in his age and the level he's playing at now, and Raya could still climb higher but I'm personally, not convinced by that at 28.

Fulham must be perfectly satisfied with Leno, he has hardly put a foot wrong since he arrived.
No point in comparing him with other keepers while he continues to perform for us, we need to concentrate on what is not happening at the other end of the pitch.
