Just signed up to TNT Sports for the month to watch...worth it with the 3 Euro finals, the 2nd leg semis, Everton's Last Home Game at Goodison etc.

well worth the £31 this month (unusually).

Villa were a basket case of a club when we beat them in the playoffs & in huge debt. Now they're in the CL & paying huge wages. Creative accounting?

I'd sub Adama and ESR on at half time for Sess and Wilson. Unfortunately neither one of them has played well in the first half. Bassey and Robinson need to do much better. They look very shaky at the back. Raul doesn't seem as confident as he did earlier in the season.

I would have started Adama
He was bloody brilliant in the last game, changed the game....but again the wrong decision to start Wilson. Let him earn it working back from injury. Poor decision again on that front for me.

Would have started ESR after getting a goal last game too. Assume he's still not quite fully over whatever this small injury concern silvas mentioned is.

How we miss Muniz too. Ah well. Would change it at half time personally and go at them as concerned well go 2 down and then it's a long way back

Time and again the Villa manager sets his teams up to slice right through us and they are very good at it.  We're not out of it at half time, but doing what we are currently doing isn't working.

The attacking cautiousness is part of the structure to avoid being hit on the counter, but the club are dying out for someone creative in the final 3rd. Iwobi was that guy for the 1st half of the season but since he's gone off the boil there's nothing.

Yeah, there's 2 inverted wingers who can't beat their man to cut inside. Seems flipping their sides would be worth a try. Especially Sess.
Title: Re: Villa (A) 03/05
Post by: LittleErn on May 03, 2025, 01:34:58 PM
There is no incentive for Villa to press forward, so they can afford to sit back. They know we have no answer to a packed defence and are unlikely to score in that scenario so why allow us any space? 1:0 will be enough for them.

This is a myth for me

That's exactly what people said about Southampton when 1-0 up, they sat completely compact ... Adama came on and turned the game on its head. He's not just pace in behind,he's strong in the ball, good at beating
his man even when tight to him, capable of cutting inside and crossing or going across the box, ...there's way more to his game than he gets credit for

TBF I don't think we've been disgraceful and I think a draw would be a perfectly fair and reflective result

Beaten only by a corner kick at this point away at side that's lost only 1 at home all year

Let's not get carried away. The free kicks are definitely awful but that doesn't make everything else awful. Villa may not be great but they are at home and are above us in the league. I think they've done as much as they needed to. It's still in the balance.

And now we have to play the game out with ten men. Personally I would have put Vini on for Raul rather than bring Reed on.

He's been out of form , but better than Reed when you're trying to score a goal

Funny he's moving ball around pretty well, winning  the ball back a man down to get attacks going

Not the guy to blame at all today we've been way better second half than first.

A little bad luck, sure, but I also question the wisdom of making the 5th sub when you've still got ~20 minutes left to play.

When you're chasing a game and you have a choice of Cairney or Reed it's Cairney all day long. Completely the opposite when holding on to a lead.

Gutted about the result, didn't really go close enough but fought well. We really miss Muniz.

Felt our midfield got overrun. Real shame to be undone on an early set piece. We just don't get anything at Villa.

Decent effort at the end with ten men. Shame Sessegnon was yellow carded which was presumably the reason for his coming off. Right hand side toothless after that. Missed Muniz as Jiminez struggles now to make 90 + minutes.
