Antonee Robinson: Fulham showing we can mix it with Premier League's elite this season
Antonee Robinson believes Fulham are getting better at mixing it with the top sides this season – giving them every chance of pushing on from mid-table in the Premier League.

The Whites were not quite able to take full advantage of an early red card for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson, but Saturday's thrilling
2-2 draw at Anfield was still hugely encouraging given their unflattering record at the home of the Reds, where they have only won twice.

It follows the previous week's 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Craven Cottage, a draw at Spurs and two very narrow defeats in Manchester. They have had only one defeat in the past eight games.

"We've been managing to pick up results against top teams, that's the difference from last year," said the 27-year-old USA defender. "We've got injuries, but it's all about getting everyone back and staying consistent.

"We were on even footing and then we scored and they got a red card. They took a lot of risks pushing men high and they were rewarded for it. There was space for us on the break but we didn't capitalise.

"They piled the pressure on and were really positive, They brought Diogo Jota on. I felt like Mo Salah was getting the better of me in the first half, I was on a booking but I felt more myself in the second half."

Robinson claimed an assist for both Fulham goals – for Andreas Pereira and Rodrigo Muniz – and his phenomenal energy and marauding runs down the left flank were one of the reasons the Whites did so well.

His was a man of the match performance which underlined just how important he has become.

Robinson has assisted 11 Premier League goals since the start of last season – the most of any defender in the competition.

Boss Marco Silva knows his defender's value only too well. He said: "What a performance. It's really difficult to find one moment where he wasn't at a really high level.

"It's not easy to come here playing against a player like Salah, the way normally they like to expose the left-back.

"We took that risk, to go one-v-one, many times. He was so brave, he was so assertive, he was so aggressive in the right way and he did it so, so well.

"He's improving so, so quick in some things: The way he's improving in some set-ups, defensive set-ups, being much more brave in the way he faces one-v-one situations, the way he goes inside the spaces as well.

"And of course, again, two assists from a full-back at Anfield shows the quality that he has. I remember some seasons ago, even last season, many people were talking about his decision making, but already he's the player from our team with more assists for sure.

"What a performance from him. What a performance. Brilliant, unbelievable performance from him, and I told him at the end of the game that he has to be really proud."

Looking back on the draw, Silva said: "With one player more and leading the score, we should have been more narrow. We were too open and their composure was decisive.

"The momentum is here and in our group. I have to give credit to our players for their attitude and commitment. We have to go in the same way against Southampton next week."

Fulham's stomach for the fight against the bigger clubs will be further tested on Boxing Day when they make the short trip to Stamford Bridge to play bitter local rivals Chelsea.

Liverpool Want to Sign 'Phenomenal' Star Who is 'Ideal' for Slot
Liverpool have reportedly identified Fulham defender Antonee Robinson as an ideal replacement for Andy Robertson at left-back, former scout Mick Brown has revealed.

The Reds are reportedly looking to bring in a long-term replacement for the Scotsman in early 2025 and have earmarked Robinson as an option, having been impressed with his solid performances in the Premier League.

The American defender has started all 16 of Fulham's games this term and has managed six assists, proving to be a constant threat going forward on the left.

The 'phenomenal' 27-year-old ranks joint third in top-flight assists this term, behind Bukayo Saka (10) and Mohamed Salah (9).

According to Brown, Liverpool are 'definitely' keeping an eye on Robinson ahead of the January transfer window as they look to bolster Arne Slot's squad with more new arrivals:

"He's definitely one they're interested in signing. After his performance at Anfield, I'd expect that interest will only have increased.

"He's very similar to Robertson, actually, in the way he's always willing to get forward and cause problems on the overlap getting problems in.

"Over the last few years, there's been nobody better at that than Robertson, but now you could make the argument that Robinson is right up there."

"So as far as I've heard, they view him as the ideal replacement in that position."

Liverpool were one of the quietest clubs in the Premier League this summer, welcoming only Federico Chiesa to their senior squad and securing a deal for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join next summer.

However, they are expected to be active in 2025 and reportedly view left-back as one of the priority positions to strengthen, considering Robertson will turn 31 in March and will have 12 months left on his contract at the end of the season.

Fulham will be in a strong negotiating position if Liverpool come calling for Robinson in 2025, as he is under contract at Craven Cottage until June 2028, having signed a new five-year deal last year.

The American full-back has been linked with a move away from Fulham for the past 12 months, with Manchester United also often mentioned in reports as his potential suitors.

Ranked: Nigeria's most valuable players in the Premier League – Iwobi leads Leicester and Nottingham Forest stars
Alex Iwobi has been ranked Nigeria's most valuable player in the Premier League, Soccernet.ng reports.

According to the latest transfer valuations released by Transfermarkt, the Fulham midfielder, currently valued at €25 million (approximately ₦41 billion), leads the list of Super Eagles stars in England's top flight.

While this figure falls short of his career-high valuation of €32 million, Iwobi's impressive form this season has underlined his importance.

The 27-year-old has contributed five goals and three assists in 16 games, marking his most prolific start to a Premier League campaign since making his debut.

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi follows closely behind, with a market value of €22 million. The forward's strong performances last season have cemented his position as Nigeria's second-most valuable player in England.

Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi, once valued at an astonishing €62 million during his peak years, now sits third at €18 million. Despite his reduced valuation, the midfielder has remained a key figure for Leicester, featuring in all but one match this season.

Calvin Bassey, valued at €16 million, ranks fourth. The centre-back, who became Nigeria's most expensive defensive export when he joined Ajax from Rangers in 2022, has been vital for Marco Silva's side.

However, Bassey missed Fulham's recent draw against Liverpool due to suspension.

Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina rounds out the top five. The versatile fullback has seen his value rise by €2 million to €14 million following his consistent displays this season.

Elsewhere, Southampton striker Paul Onuachu (€11 million) remains sixth despite limited playing time. Onuachu, who joined the Saints in January 2023, is yet to open his Premier League goal account.

At the bottom of the rankings, Emmanuel Dennis, inactive for Nottingham Forest since the start of the season, holds a valuation of €4 million. Meanwhile, Southampton's Joe Aribo sits just above him with a €6 million value.

Interestingly, Chelsea trio Carney Chukwuemeka, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Lesley Ugochukwu (currently on loan at Southampton), as well as Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, are yet to commit their international futures to Nigeria despite eligibility.

Ranking: Nigeria's Most Valuable Premier League Players

Alex Iwobi (Fulham) – €25 million
Taiwo Awoniyi (Nottingham Forest) – €22 million
Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City) – €18 million

Fulham's Andreas Pereira spotted doing something interesting in the Anfield tunnel at half-time against Liverpool
How Liverpool look back on Saturday's draw with Fulham will ultimately only be determined at the end of the season.

If the Reds go on to clinch the Premier League title, it will be a hard-fought point won while down to ten men.

Should they come up short in the title race, though, then failing to beat the Cottagers at Anfield will take on a negative light.

Liverpool should be beating Fulham at home no matter the circumstances, with all due respect to the West London side, of course.

Nevertheless, it's also true that Marco Silva has assembled a good team with some excellent players within it.

One of those is Andreas Pereira. And after the former Man United player scored the opener at Anfield on Saturday, he was spotted doing something interesting in the tunnel at half-time.

Andreas Pereira swaps shirts at half-time
Pereira was a thorn in Liverpool's side on Saturday. The Brazil international ghosted in to get the game's first goal and looked a threat from thereon in.

As a former United player, Pereira no doubt enjoyed getting a Premier League goal in front of the Kop.

But, as it turned out, the £10m signing was happy to be playing at Anfield on Saturday for another reason, too: Mohamed Salah.

Salah is one of world football's true superstars and has a claim to currently be the best player on the planet.

As a result, perhaps it should not have been a surprise that LFCTV cameras caught Pereira asking for Salah's shirt at half-time during their 'Inside Anfield' series.

As players from both teams emerge from the pitch at the break, Liverpool's Egyptian King can be seen handing his top to Pereira following a conversation between the pair. The man is simply an icon.

Robinson: We can go toe-to-toe with the top teams
Antonee Robinson says Fulham's creativity at Anfield is the latest example of Marco Silva's side proving they can go toe-to-toe with the Premier League's top teams.

The Fulham captain feels his team are taking significant strides forward after drawing against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Liverpool since the start of December.

Robinson, who stole the show with two assists as the Whites drew 2-2 with the league leaders said:

"We've been managing to pick up results against top teams, that's the difference from last year. We've got injuries, but it's all about getting everyone back and staying consistent. We were on even footing and then we scored and they got a red card. They took a lot of risks pushing men high and they were rewarded for it. Relentless, Rapid, Reliable: The Rise of Antonee Robinson at Fulham
In a world full of tactical innovation, Antonee Robinson is a welcome throwback. His blistering speed, lung-busting overlaps, and growing defensive maturity make him a nightmare for opponents and a weapon Marco Silva can't do without.

For a player tasked with marking Mohamed Salah all game, Antonee Robinson looked remarkably fresh.

And so, with 15 minutes remaining and Fulham drawing 1-1 away to league leaders Liverpool, Robinson had no intention of abandoning his attacking mindset. If anything, he doubled down on it.

Knocking the ball square to Harry Wilson in the middle of the park, Robinson surged down Fulham's left flank, leaving a stream of Liverpool players in his wake.

(https://theanalyst.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/robinson-assist-for-fulham-second-goal-1-2048x1152.png)  (https://theanalyst.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/robinson-assist-for-fulham-second-goal-2-2048x1152.png)

Ten seconds later and the ball was in the back of the net, Rodrigo Muniz bundling in after Robinson's lung-busting gallop and cross.

Yes, the hosts had been playing with 10 men for almost 50 minutes, but the speed and athleticism of Robinson was as impressive as his willingness to bomb forward. It was the second time that afternoon he had been directly involved in a Fulham goal, and it underlined his ever-growing influence on this team.

Robinson's athleticism is impossible to miss. He runs the left flank tirelessly, and moments like his second assist at Anfield highlight just how much of an asset his physical attributes are.

Tracking data supports what the eye test suggests. Robinson is rapid — his top speed of 35.6 kph ranks fifth among all Premier League players this season — and relentless, averaging 8.5 sprints per 90 minutes. That's the second-highest rate of any defender in the league, behind Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez (8.8). Nearly half (48.4%) of Robinson's runs come at full sprint, a rate bettered only by Kerkez (52.5%) and Liverpool's Andy Robertson (49.7%).

What's more, this incredible amount of running comes without respite. Robinson is one of only four outfielders to play every single minute of their team's Premier League campaign this season and is currently on a run of 49 consecutive league starts for Marco Silva's side. Only James Tarkowski (93), Bernd Leno (90), Jordan Pickford (84), and André Onana (54) are on longer active streaks.

His remarkable physical endurance was something Silva directly referred to after the game as well: "What a performance. It is difficult to express in words. It's not the first time. If we have to play again in two days, he's going to be ready again. He's a great athlete."

Robinson's second assist of the day brought his tally to six for the season, all of which have come from open play. That's a figure only Mohamed Salah (8) and Bukayo Saka (7) can better. Since the start of last season, Robinson's 12 Premier League assists are the most of any defender.

In a world of inverting and underlapping full-backs, Robinson is very much a traditional one. He hugs the left touchline, frequently overlapping Alex Iwobi, adding not only great width but great dynamism to Fulham's play. The American leads the entire league for overlapping runs this season with 110 – if that's not old school we don't know what is.

Robinson's touchmap below shows not only how high he likes to push up, but also that he's getting into even more advanced areas this season compared to last.

Some of that will be because Fulham have generally been better this season that last. They're averaging 14 more completed passes in the opposition's half per game than in 2023-24. But it also speaks to Robinson's growing self-assurance.

The role he plays in how Fulham generated chances is invaluable.  Robinson's electric form, combined with the renaissance of Iwobi, means that Fulham's left flank has become their most productive channel. Only Leicester (45.8%) have created a higher proportion of their chances down their left than Fulham (40.9%).

The bulk of that work comes through crosses. Fulham have attempted the joint-most open-play crosses in the league this season (251, level with Tottenham) and no side have completed more than their 56. Robinson's contribution within that is substantial – he averages 4.1 open-play crosses per 90 minutes, a number only Spurs' Pedro Porro (4.5) can beat among full-backs.

Against Liverpool, this was on full display. Robinson created a match-high four chances – three from crosses –  as Fulham relentlessly targeted Liverpool's right sides. Arne Slot's side overall conceded six chances from the left flank – their joint most in a single Premier League game this season.

Despite leaning even more in his attacking role within the team, Robinson has tightened up defensively this season. Last campaign, he made three errors leading to shots, one of which resulted in a goal. This season, that number is zero. That's despite being as aggressive as ever in defence. Robinson is attempting 3.1 tackles per 90 this season, which is a large increase from his rate of 2.5 last campaign.

He's also won more high turnovers (13) that anyone else at Fulham, and the cluster of turnovers just inside the opposition half on Fulham's left channel shows this:

Robinson also being dribbled past at a lower rate, and Fulham's opponents aren't finding significant joy exploiting the space he vacates. If you break down where on the pitch Fulham concede chances – left (33.1%), middle (33.1%), and right (33.8%) – the split is extremely even.

At Anfield, Robinson's defensive display was arguably as impressive as his attacking one. He handled Salah – one of the most formidable one-one-one attackers in the world – quite ably for the most part. The Egyptian failed to register a shot on target for the first time in a game this season and his overall expected goals total of 0.22 was his third-lowest mark of the campaign. Granted, he did deliver the cross for Cody Gakpo's goal but come on. This is Salah we're talking about.

Robinson, for his part, won more duels than any other player on the pitch and dispossessed Salah in half of their 12 one-on-one duels – the most turnovers Salah has suffered against a single opponent this season. He was similarly effective against Saka in Fulham's previous game at home to Arsenal, restricting him to just two efforts on goal and winning the ball off him four times in their one-on-one duels – no player has done that more against Saka this season.

Silva was quick to highlight Robinson's defensive improvements after the Liverpool game:

"The way he's been improving in our defensive process, some defensive setups, he's always open-minded to learn and he's been improving."

"But as well, playing against Salah, a lot of situations one-vs-one, the way he was brave, the way he was assertive and aggressive in the right way, with a yellow card from 25, 30 minutes into the game, even so always really aggressive in a good way."

If some rumours are to be believed, seeing Andy Robertson line up against Robinson represented the present and future of Slot's left flank. Events only exacerbated that feeling with Robertson sent off after just 17 minutes and Robinson's excellent display. Manchester City are also rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.

While there are doubts about whether his age fits the profile of a Liverpool signing, there are no doubts that Robinson's performances this season mean we can now ask the question: is he the best left-back in England right now?

What Stephen Warnock just said about Raul Jimenez will leave Wolves fans puzzled
Former Wolves striker Raul Jimenez will forever be classed as a hero for what he achieved at Molineux.

Jimenez spearheaded the Wolves attack during the Nuno Espirito Santo golden era as the Wanderers qualified for the Europa League in two successive campaigns.

The Mexican striker eclipsed the 20-goal mark during his most memorable times at the club, firing a combined 44 goals across the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns.

The clinical finisher was one of the best strikers in the Premier League at that point but after Jimenez suffered a horrific skull injury against Arsenal in November 2020, his form took a turn for the worse as a result.

Upon recovering from the life-threatening injury, the 33-year-old only managed nine goals in 56 appearances and failed to recapture his scoring touch that once set Molineux alight.

Wolves decided to sell Jimenez to Fulham in the summer of 2023 alongside Adama Traore. To many, this was the correct decision, although one pundit disagreed.

Stephen Warnock was 'surprised' when Wolves sold Raul Jimenez
Since making the switch to West London, the Mexican international has endeared himself to the Fulham faithful and this season, he's produced some of his best form in years.

With five goals and two assists in 16 appearances, the striker is on track to reach double figures for the first time since 2020, and that would be impressive.

It's a far cry from how he performed towards the end of his Wolves career, and that is understandable given the extent of the injury, yet former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock thinks they were wrong to sell Jimenez.

Speaking on the BBC's Monday Night Club podcast, Warnock outlined his 'surprise' for when they allowed the Mexican to leave for pastures new.

"The one thing that really surprised me was actually, and I love him and I think he's a great player, was why they'd sell Raul Jimenez," he said.

"I know it wasn't last season, but for a player of that quality, he's exactly what Wolves need. He'll chip in with 10 goals a season, maybe a few more, but it's his work rate off the ball. It's that tenacity up front to pester defenders constantly."

Jorgen Strand Larsen is better than Jimenez
Wolves still chant about Jimenez at some matches and in the 4-1 win over Fulham, the supporters showed their appreciation towards the striker.

However, most will disagree with what Warnock said about him, as the club made the correct decision to move him on when they did.

Now, Jorgen Strand Larsen has finally replaced Jimenez at Wolves, becoming that physically imposing and aerially powerful striker they craved.

Raul Jimenez vs Jorgen Strand Larsen (2024/25)  Raul Jimenez  Jorgen Strand Larsen
Games  16  16
Goals  6
Assists  2
Aerial duels won per 90  1.6  2.6
Goal conversion  15%  23%
Key passes  0.6  0.6

Since arriving from Celta Vigo on a season-long loan with an option to buy, Strand Larsen has shown his quality, forming a lethal partnership with Matheus Cunha while showcasing his clinical edge.

Indeed, the above table suggests the Norwegian has narrowly outperformed Jimenez this term and is proving exactly why they were right to offload him.

Aston Villa and Fulham target splits from agent in transfer clue amid bargain £10m claim
With Premier League trio Aston Villa, Southampton and Fulham already interested, it will not go unnoticed that one of their January targets has just split with his agent.

A change in representation, ahead of the opening of a transfer window, usually only means one thing.

So this is far from a promising development for a Bundesliga outfit who, sitting ninth in the table, were hoping to build on a bright start and secure a return to European competition after 17 years away.

TBR understands that Aston Villa, Southampton and Fulham are fans of Romano Schmid.

A tireless yet technically-gifted Austria international who became a key figure under Ralf Rangnick due to his poise and fearsome running power, Schmid's contract situation leaves Werder Bremen vulnerable.

And while Werder director Clemens Fritz insists Schmid won't be sold in the winter, the harsh reality is that, with a contract running until the summer of 2026, his valuation will fall pretty rapidly unless fresh terms can be agreed.

Aston Villa and Fulham target Romano Schmid splits from agent
Schmid, TBR have been informed, could potentially be secured for less than £10 million. English football also offers the Graz-born 24-year-old, one of the more underrated attacking midfielders in Europe's major leagues, the chance to enhance his growing reputation.

Deich Stube, a publication who specialise in all things Werder Bremen, report that Schmid has now split from his representatives.

It is far from uncommon for footballers to pursue a new agent when a transfer is on the cards. Often, they will look to secure the services of a man like the highly-influential Pini Zahavi; an agent renowned for his ability to get deals over the line.

Now, Schmid is perhaps not quite high-profile enough to join Zahavi's stable. But the next steps he takes will make for very interesting viewing as Aston Villa look to add more midfield depth to their ranks.

TBR understands Aston Villa love Villarreal's Alex Baena. But, at £50 million, the Spain international might be beyond reach. Osasuna confirmed Unai Emery's admiration for Aimor Oroz recently, meanwhile, alongside young centre-back Enzo Boyomo.

Schmid's hopes of a switch to the Premier League will not be helped, however, by a poor run of form across recent months. In his last ten Werder Bremen appearances, the former Red Bull Salzburg ace has just one goal and no assists.

Coach Ole Werner believes Schmid's downturn is the result of a packed fixture schedule.

He was a key part of the hard-running Austria squad which reached the quarter-finals of the summer's European Championships, after all, while recent trips to the furthest reaches of the continent have not helped aid his revoery.

Werder Bremen boss hails Schmid's work-rate and explains poor form
"Romano has had a year in which there was a lot going on and in which he had few long breaks," Werner says. "He has made it to the national team and is a very reliable player for Austria.

"He played in a tournament in the summer and recently travelled with the Austrian national team to Kazakhstan. That is quite a workload. So, it is normal that he might notice these [below-par] games at the end of the year.

"It may be that, in the last few weeks, he has been less precise in one situation or another than before, but that does not change his importance for our game. He still gives us as a team so much energy and strength on the pitch."

Werner highlights Schmid's refusal to give up on any lost cause, even when his energy reserves have been sapped by a relentless workload.

"Against Darmstadt [a 1-0 win at the start of December], Derrick Kohn almost shot the ball into the crowd in the 90th minute and knocked someone's teacup out of their hand!

"But Romano ran after it, scraped the ball off the sideline, held his ground against two people, passed the ball to Leo Bittencourt, who won a free-kick which ultimately led to the winning goal,"

"Those were two almost hopeless situations. And that was Romano. If you look at how many games he has played this year, he cannot be valued highly enough. And that's why he is a player, for us, who is extremely important and difficult to replace when he is not there."

Liverpool transfer move for Antonee Robinson would hand Everton needed financial boost
Antonee Robinson caught the eye during Liverpool's draw with Fulham at the weekend, but signing the left-back could end up helping out the Reds' Merseyside rivals

Antonee Robinson certainly caught the eye at Anfield on Saturday, and more than a few Liverpool fans are looking at him as a possible successor to Andy Robertson - there is one slight issue with that though.

Whereas the Reds' left-back had an afternoon to forget against Fulham, Robinson couldn't have done much more to enhance his reputation, bagging assists for both of the visitors' goals while also keeping Mohamed Salah fairly quiet.

It's no wonder Fulham boss Marco Silva rates him as the best in his position in the Premier League right now, although that sort of status does bring plenty of transfer attention - especially when it comes to Liverpool.

Rumors are rife that the Reds could soon be looking for a new left-back, with Robertson not quite reaching his usual high standards this season. Robinson has inevitably seen himself linked with a move to Anfield, and if his social media activity is anything to go by, he seems quite keen on the idea himself.

If Liverpool is to make a move for the USMNT star though, it would mean inadvertently helping out their Merseyside neighbors.

According to the ECHO, Everton would stand to benefit from any move Robinson makes in January, with the 27-year-old having started out at the academy at Goodison Park. As part of a deal agreed when he made the move to Wigan Athletic in 2020, Everton would receive 33 percent of the 20 percent sell-on clause the League One side has in place on any profit made by Fulham should Robinson be sold.

Therefore, if Fulham were to receive around $51m (£40m/€49m) having signed Robinson for $2.5m (£2m/€2.4m) from Wigan, Everton would be in line to receive around $3.1m (£2.5m/€3m). While that might not sound like much, it would be greatly welcomed by the Toffees ahead of what could be a crucial January window for them, especially given their PSR troubles last season.
