Title: Spine of the team
Post by: MickTheBeard on May 13, 2025, 10:17:47 AM
Yes we need wide players 3rd forward and a goalscoring midfielder but what happened to the so-called spine of the team.goalkeeper the german not as good as our Australian who came out and challenged for the ball brave at times an extra defender our German is not and he's extremely overpaid. Centre backs very average no captains their dictate play push the team on even ream who got on with his game had limitations but he was more of a leader than the ones we have got.midfield defensive something missing berg big but isn't thou shall not pass player seems to nice a player don't put his head in their where it hurts Rowe providing he can adapt to 90 mins has real promise and of cause  a20 goal centre forward then we can look at wide players another goalscoring centre forward and a couple of homegrown boys in our squad their silva and tony that was easy just try it football is an easy game if you understand it unless you don't want a player who is outspoken and tells you two how it is if you don't we aren't going anywhere only down.

Leadership is certainly a debate but unless we are signing an Captain for next season whatever the position then more of the same? With regards to midfield I tend to think is one of the reasons we struggle as an attacking outfit. Both Berge & Lukic are neither forward thinking footballers. Very rarely will they look at what's in front of them and lack of vision is apparent. They will both play the safe option hence our constant left to right or right to left patterns once inside oppositions half. You only need to look at eithers goal scoring record with us. One or both need to be replaced next season with player/s who move the ball quicker and do not have tunnel vision?

A far more reasonable post, Mick, than many you have written. At least it's not just an excuse to hurl abuse at Tony Khan.

While I might not agree entirely with what you write, I definitely don't agree with this statement:

Yes, football is an easy game to talk about; almost everyone has an opinion on who ought to be replaced with someone better and almost everyone thinks he understands what he is seeing. It is far less easy, in my opinion, to improve over and above that of our rivals. Some may have done it better than us: some not as well. Every season sees a different club seemingly take a leap forward while others, in comparison, slip back. Even if every club were working to its maximum, three of them still go down at the end of a season.

Considering how critical you are, it is surprising, for instance, to see you cut Smith-Rowe as much slack when his performances have been some way short of consistently good. You describe our centre backs, underwhelmingly, as being 'very average', but we are a mid-table Premier League outfit; it should not be unexpected, therefore, to find 'average' players in the team.

Lastly, while Tony Khan's understanding of football, based on what we know about his experience, may not exceed that of yours, I think it's a step too far for you to imply that you could tell Marco Silva things he wouldn't already know or have grasped. Ostensibly, with your having never managed at this level, it's unlikely you could and you have no way, I would suggest, of knowing otherwise.

We all know that apart LCB (with Bassey, Cuena, Diop) and LB (Robinson, Sessegnon and Castange), we desire improvements in every other position for either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd choose option. The trick is to get the most improvement within the FFP constraints.

I've put your response where it is meant to be, Mick.

And nor do I disagree with you: a comfortable mid-table position may not be as easily attainable if we don't improve our squad this summer. Let's hope we sign some players who make our starting XI stronger.

Think we have improved year on year under Marcos leadership this year up until the last 5 games it's been a increase in improvement.
Shame about these last games really.
