Forget Kyle Walker - Everton's ideal transfer alternatives are obvious amid West Ham and Fulham links
Kyle Walker is a transfer target for Everton - but is he still good enough to succeed in the Premier League?

Has there ever been a football club that love an ageing full-back as much as Everton? Reporting this week suggests that the team of Tony Hibbert and Seamus Coleman are keen to address the departure of Ashley Young by adding another storied veteran to the squad – Manchester City's Kyle Walker.

The Guardian reported on Monday that Walker was one of four options being considered to address a potential issue at right-back created by Coleman's ever-advancing years and Nathan Patterson's persistent injury struggles.

While the 35-year-old may still be in Thomas Tuchel's England squad, there was plenty of evidence of diminishing returns both at the Etihad and on loan with AC Milan over the second half of the season. Pep Guardiola appears to have lost faith, Milan declined to make a permanent offer, and now Walker is set to move and is said to be "enthusiastic" about the prospect of moving to Merseyside. But can he still do a job? And is he really the best option Everton have on the table?

Is Man City's Kyle Walker still good enough for Everton?
That would have been a straightforward to answer a few years ago, but Walker struggled in the 2024/25 season, not least because the breathtaking turn of pace which has been such a key part of his game seems to have declined as the years start to take their toll.

It would be doing Walker a serious disservice to suggest that he was only successful because of his speed, and he has plenty of technical quality, but his understanding of how to defend, how to position himself and how to handle one-on-one situations was always based on a turn of pace that few opposing players could match. Now that his burst has gone, he essentially has to rework his entire concept of how to play.

It's a transition that very few players whose playing style hinged on pace have ever made. Ryan Giggs is perhaps the only elite player of the Premier League era who was able to adapt to the loss of extreme speed, and typically rapid players fade fast when their leg muscles simply can't keep pumping as quickly as they once did.

Walker hasn't necessarily been that bad, but neither has he shone over the course of the past year. He's contributing less in attack, and on average creates 33% fewer shooting chances for his team-mates than he did two seasons ago. There's evidence that he's finding a little more challenging, too.

Over the course of 2024/25, Walker made an average of 2.38 tackle attempts per match. That's not an especially high number, but is still far higher than was previously the case. In 2021/22, he attempted less than one tackle every game – not because he wasn't trying, but because he used his outstanding positioning to reach the ball before an opponent ever got to it in the first place, and because he was able to stand attackers up and force them to find another way around when they did have possession.

Now, that positional sense is starting to fail because he can't cover the ground he once did. Instincts for the space he can deal with which were developed over years in which he was generally the quickest player of the pitch are now letting him down. It was, perhaps, evident in England's recent defeat to Senegal - for Ismaïla Sarr's equaliser, Walker's marking was loose and he was unable to cover a ball which he probably once would have, giving the Crystal Palace forward time and space to score which he wouldn't have had a couple of years back.

To give Walker his due, his technical quality hasn't been lacking. He still makes his passes, can still beat an opposing player regularly with the ball at his feet, and he's succeeding with an impressive percentage of those tackles. There isn't evidence of widespread statistical decline, but his sense of how to operate both at the back and coming forward is failing to keep up with a new physical reality.

So far, anyway. Just because Walker hasn't adapted yet doesn't guarantee that he can't follow Giggs' example with some patience. But it's fair to question whether he can offer Everton enough of his former quality to be worth bringing in.

The Guardian's reports suggests that David Moyes would value Walker's experience and winning mentality, ephemeral additions which are impossible to quantify. Perhaps he would indeed prove to be a boon to the dressing room, a fine mentor for Patterson, or simply a player whose will to win helps him to blow the cobwebs off and pick his performances up next season. But the evidence of the eyes suggests that Walker's career is in decline, and it's the kind of slide very few players arrest for long.

Do Everton have better transfer options than Kyle Walker?
The Guardian don't mention whether Walker would be signed permanently or on loan, nor what the contractual terms might be. If he proved to be a cheap one-year punt, the gamble becomes rather easier to justify – but do Everton have better options?

The story claims that Walker is one of four names on Moyes' shortlist. The others are Fulham's Kenny Tete, Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters and West Ham's Vladimír Coufal, all of whom are set to become free agents at the end of June. Could any of those budget-friendly alternatives be better?

Certainly all of them have a longer shelf-life. Coufal, who worked under Moyes at West Ham, is now 31 but Tete and Walker-Peters are only edging into their late twenties and should offer more of a long-term solution to concerns at right-back.

The chart above compares the four players across a number of key statistical markers over the course of the 2024/25 season. Walker stands out as being perhaps the best technical player, both as a passer and with the ball at his feet, but in terms of defensive contributions and attacking threat, he seems to be lagging behind Walker-Peters and Tete.

Walker-Peters had perhaps the best season of the four, especially when bearing in mind that a lower number of tackles can be a sign of better defending as a player puts himself in fewer positions when he needs to lunge in, but there's a strong case for Tete being the best defender of the four over the last year.

Walker being involved in the fewest shooting opportunities stands out because he was playing for teams competing for European slots who had possession and were proactive with it far more often that was the case for West Ham, Fulham or Southampton. All things being even between their teams, Walker's alleged rivals for a place in the Everton squad would probably be even further ahead.

Of course, a statistical snapshot can only offer a few pieces of the puzzle. It can't measure intangible qualities or dressing-room contributions and it can't replace the eye test – but that also suggests that Walker is a fading force, a brilliant right-back who simply can't do what he used to. Perhaps Everton would be better served looking elsewhere. Then again, they wouldn't want to let the average age of their back four drop too low. Some traditions need to be maintained.

Everton join Caci chase
Everton have emerged as serious rivals to Fulham in the race to sign Mainz full-back Anthony Caci, according to Teamtalk.

The versatile French man, who can play on either side of back four or back five as well as in midfield, has been scouted by Fulham for months and is unlikely to sign a new contract, according to reports in Germany. This makes the 27 year-old available if anyone is willing to meet Mainz's £8.5m asking price – and both the Whites and Everton, who are in the market for a new right back with the imminent exit of Ashley Young, are prepared to do so.

Fulham considered a deal for Caci back in January and the attack-minded man has long been on the club's radar. They will need to move quickly to secure the former Strasbourg star's signature but reports from Italy suggest that Atalanta defender Raoul Bellanova is the Marco Silva's top summer target.

Fulham fixtures for Premier League 2025-26 season confirmed: Big guns up early for Cottagers
The Cottagers are looking to build on last season's solid foundations

Fulham will start the new Premier League season away at Brighton.

The Cottagers finished right in the middle of the pack last term as Marco Silva led them to an 11th-placed finish. A fine first half of the campaign saw them climb as high as sixth, but an inconsistent second half led to them dropping out of the top half.

The west Londoners enjoyed a quieter season, not threatened by relegation, nor entangled in the end-of-season pursuit of a European place, although the latter could well be a target for Silva in this campaign.

Fulham's first real challenge comes in their second and third fixtures, with the visit of Manchester United to, and that will be part of a tough opening run for Silva's side as they also face Aston Villa, Arsenal and Newcastle before the end of October. They play host Chelsea on January 7.

The traditional festive period will see Fulham face Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Crystal Palace. Their first game of 2026 is at home to Liverpool. The season concludes at home to Newcastle.

The Premier League has this morning announced the fixtures for the 2025/26 campaign, with Fulham kicking off away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday 16th August.

Our first fixture at Craven Cottage sees us welcome Manchester United a week later, while there's an early SW6 derby to look forward to at Stamford Bridge at the end of August.

There's currently no Boxing Day fixture scheduled, though our trip to West Ham United could move to the 26th if it's selected for live television coverage.

The New Year starts with tasty home meetings with Liverpool and Chelsea, and we also conclude the season at the Cottage, with Newcastle United the visitors.

King scores as England U19s draw ten-goal thriller
Fulham midfielder Josh King scored before England's under 19s roared back from 5-1 down to draw their second U19 Euros group game 5-5 with Germany in Bucharest tonight.

King brought England back into the game with his side 2-0 down following German goals by Noah Darvich and El Mala but the young Lions looked to be destined for a mauling when their opponents scored three times without reply. Max Moerstedt, Leopold Wurm and El Mala's second put the Germans 5-1 up three minutes after half time.

But a stunning comeback – featuring four goals from the Young Lions in an incredible eleven-minute spell – changed the complexion of the game and the group. Ethan Wheatley turned in a corner to make it 5-2 and Reiss Russell-Denny's drive just three minutes later further reduced the deficit.

Zach Abbott headed home from a corner to make it 5-4 before Jesse Derry equalised after Germany goalkeeper Konstantin Heide had failed to hold Kaden Young's cross. The dramatic draw, which is the highest scoring game in the history of the UEFA competition, means that England head into Friday evening's final round of group fixtures still in with a chance of qualifying.

Will Antwi's side take on group leaders the Netherlands – who have already qualified with two wins from their two games – needing to better Germany's result against Norway to make the semi-finals.

Internationals: Kingy & Luc on form
Josh King scored England's first goal in their remarkable 5-5 draw with Germany at the Under-19 European Championship on Tuesday.

The Young Lions were trailing 2-0 when King halved the deficit, controlling a bouncing cross from the left on his chest before rifling in a fine volley.

It looked as though that would prove to be just a consolation when the Germans netted three times in the seven minutes either side of half-time to storm into a 5-1 lead, but the subsequent response was phenomenal.

Ethan Wheatley, Reiss Russell-Denny, Zach Abbott and Jesse Derry all scored in a mad 12 minute period to earn England a deserved point, with King playing 77 minutes of the contest.

The result means qualification remains in the Young Lions' hands, as they prepare to face group winners the Netherlands on Friday.

In the Gold Cup, Luc De Fougerolles helped Canada to a clean sheet and comprehensive win as they kicked off their campaign with a statement-making 6-0 victory over Honduras.

De Fougerolles started at centre-back and played 63 minutes, by which point his side were three goals to the good thanks to efforts from Niko Sigur, Tani Oluwaseyi and Tajon Buchanan.

Buchanan, Promise David and Nathan-Dylan Saliba added more gloss to the scoreline, putting Canada in a strong position to progress after the other game finished goalless between Curacao and El Salvador.

de Fougerolles starts as Canada hit Honduras for six
Fulham defender Luc de Fougerolles played 63 minutes of Canada's 6-0 win over Honduras as Jesse Marsch's side started their Gold Cup campaign in real style in Vancouver last night.

Nineteen year-old de Fougerolles, who was included in Canada's squad for this tournament despite missing most of last season through injury, started at centre back and was full of defensive diligence and composed touches during his time on the pitch. The talented teenager was handed a senior debut by Marco Silva two years ago and has been tipped to break into the Fulham first team picture this year.

Canada easily outclassed a Honduras outfit that appeared overawed by the big occasion with a brace from Tajon Buchanan and goals from Niko Sigur, Tani Oluwaseyi, Promise David and Nathan Saliba securing a thumping victory.

Fulham reject £32m transfer bid from Leeds for striker Rodrigo Muniz
Brazilian is attracting interest after scoring eight Premier League goals last season

Fulham have rejected an offer from Leeds United for striker Rodrigo Muniz.

The Cottagers were approached with an offer worth £26million plus £6m in add-ons but have declined, Standard Sport understands.

Muniz is considered by the Fulham board as one of the club's most valuable assets and attracted exploratory interest from West Ham in January.

Fulham do not intend to sell the Brazilian this summer but understand they may be forced to consider his exit if an offer too good to refuse arrives.

In the meantime, they have been tracking a number of striker targets of their own and could sign a centre-forward this summer even if strikers Muniz and Raul Jimenez both stay at the club.

Leeds plan to sign a top striker this summer but are expected to move on to other targets now that their bid for Muniz has been rebuffed.

Muniz, 24, scored eight Premier League goals in 31 games last season but only started eight of those matches, with veteran Jimenez often starting ahead of him.

Muniz also scored three goals in four games in Fulham's run to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

He joined Fulham from Flamengo in 2021, and has scored 26 goals in 97 matches for the west London club.

Fulham reject Leeds' £32m bid for Muniz
Fulham have turned down an offer worth £32m from newly-promoted Leeds United for striker Rodrigo Muniz.

A report from the Standard's Dom Smith states that Leeds offered £26m up front and a further £6m in add-ons and we have confirmed the veracity of that information with Fulham sources. Fulham immediately rejected the offer and have no wish to sell the Brazilian striker. The Cottagers intend to open discussions with Muniz's representatives about a new long-term deal for the forward, who scored eleven goals in 32 appearances for Fulham last season, this summer.

The Whites rebuffed interest in Muniz from West Ham United last January and would entertain offers below £50m for the former Flamengo centre forward. Muniz has scored 26 goals in 97 games for Fulham, but was second choice striker to Mexican veteran Raul Jimenez for much of last season.

Arsenal, Spurs and Fulham handed huge advantage by Premier League fixtures - opinion
Mikel Arteta, Thomas Frank and Marco Silva will be pleased with one aspect of the Premier League fixture calendar for next season.

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham are all set to face a Liverpool side without danger man Mohamed Salah this season with the Premier League fixtures confirmed for the 2025/26 campaign.

The Africa Cup of Nations returns later this year and will see a wave of Premier League stars from the continent jet off from league duty to represent their nations. The most famous of those players is the Reds' Egyptian king Salah.

The 33-year-old remains prolific for Liverpool and signed a new contract with the club in April. He's set to lead the line for Arne Slot's side again next year, having bagged 29 league goals and picked up 18 assists last season. In total, over his 301 Premier League appearances, Salah has scored 186 goals and managed 113 assists.

Mohamed Salah record against Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham
Salah has enjoyed success against London clubs. The forward has 16 goals against Spurs during his career, the most he has bagged against any team, those finishes coming across 24 appearances. He has 11 goals in 18 outings against Arsenal and four in 10 matches against Fulham.

Last season, Salah scored in both league matches against Tottenham Hotspur, bagging two goals and two assists in December and then a single goal in April. He also picked up a goal and assist in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. The winger didn't score in either match against Fulham during the 2024/25 season but was on target in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal in October.

Egypt have safely qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this year. Egypt begin the tournament on December 22 against Zimbabwe in Agadir but Salah will likely fly out at least a week prior, unless Liverpool do a deal to keep him longer.

Africa Cup of Nations 2025 dates
If that deal isn't done, Salah will miss Liverpool's trip to Tottenham on December 20. He'll then be absent against Wolves on December 27 and the visit of Leeds United to Anfield at the end of December.

If Egypt make it through the group stage - and, given they are one of the favourites to win the tournament, they likely will - Salah will then miss matches in January. Liverpool first face Fulham on January 3 and then are up against Arsenal on January 7. The Africa Cup of Nations quarter finals are on January 9 and 10.

The Premier League then pauses for the FA Cup third round, which Salah could also miss, before Liverpool return to action against Burnley on January 17. Salah could also be absent against the Clarets with the Africa Cup of Nations final scheduled for January 18.

Arsenal, Fulham and Spurs will also be missing key players during those weeks. Should he sign a contract extension, that would include Gunners man Thomas Partey. For Spurs, it could be Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma. At Fulham, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi.

Fulham will need 'bizarre bids' to convince club to sell player – Simply uninterested in sale
Fulham would need to make 'bizarre bids' to PSV Eindhoven if they were to get Ricardo Pepi this summer.

That's according to journalist Rik Elfrink, who reports that Fulham face a battle to get the 22-year-old out of Eindhoven.

Reports in the UK have stated that Pepi is a target for Fulham this summer as they look to bolster Marco Silva's squad. That quickly picked up traction, but it seems in the Netherlands they're having none of it.

Elfrink reports that Pepi recently extended his PSV contract until 2030 and that means PSV have no interest in cooperating in a departure. That would only change if there were 'bizarre bids' for the player.

He states that, at the moment, there are clubs that would like to pay €25-30m. But that does not seem to be enough for PSV. He doesn't make it clear whether Fulham are one of those sides at this moment in time.

There is also the matter of Pepi's fitness. He is not set to be fit until mid-July. Therefore, it would be surprising to see moves happening now given he'd have to pass a medical when not fit.

PSV aren't interested in selling the striker regardless, unless Fulham or others start making bizarre bids for him.

PSV not interested in selling Pepi
PSV Eindhoven are not interested in selling Fulham target Ricardo Pepi this summer – and will only change their mind if they receive 'bizarre bids' for the American forward, according to reports from the Netherlands this afternoon.

Fulham have a long-standing interest in the 22 year-old, whom they have scouted extensively over the past year, and he features on a shortlist of possible signings who could supplement Marco Silva's striking options this summer. The Londoners' desire to lure the Texan-born attacker to Craven Cottage has been highlighted by the Daily Telegraph's Mike McGrath and acknowledged additionally this morning by Fabrizio Romano alongside interest from Italian and Spanish sides, but Eindhovens Dagblad's PSV correspondent Rik Elfrink reports that the Eredivisie champions are not ready to let Pepi leave Eindhoven.

PSV, who turned down a £21m offer from West Ham United for Pepi in January, can demand a hefty fee for the striker, who scored 17 goals in 28 games last season, because Pepi signed a contract extension until 2030. Elfrink reveals that the clubs who have registered an interest in the striker's availability are only willing to pay around £25m – whereas Rood-witten would probably demand something akin to Fulham's approximate valuation of Rodrigo Muniz. In Elfrink's own words, those would be 'bizarre bids'.

That's because Pepi has also been sidelined since mid-January with a knee injury and is unlikely to return to full training for another month – meaning the former Augsburg and Groningen striker would not pass a medical. A deal for the highly-rated centre forward, who has scored 26 goals in 68 first-team games for PSV, appears unlikely at this point. We understand that Fulham have yet to submit any formal offers for forwards this summer and recognise the difficulty in acquiring Pepi.
