Build up coverage has started on Sky, 5 minutes in its all been about Carrick and Man United ✌️

Nice to see King Kevin as a sub, I would luv it if we beat them.

When will Bruno have his first 'stumble'?  He likes to get one in early to sound out the ref. My guess is about 7 minutes in.

First Cuenca played the ball, the ref gave the pen having allowed advantage for the shirt pull but then gave a freekick for it!

That's making decisions up to accommodate the home team

Yeah, can someone explain to me why the free kick was given for an incident before the one VAR were brought in to assess?

The grab of the shirt happened outside the area, and VAR were brought in to assess a penalty appeal - which wasn't given and even valid? And was a separate incident altogether

Feels like a bit of something odd that they can assess the penalty claim, dismiss it, and then go back to an earlier instance to benefit the team because the penalty wasn't given?

I admit I don't know a huge amount about VAR but it seems inconsistent
Title: Re: Man Utd (A) Sunday 01/02
Post by: Rambler on February 01, 2026, 02:26:49 PM
I'm really unhappy with that VAR decision. The ref clearly blew for a penalty because of Cuenca's slide on cunha in the box where he got the ball.

Therefore that decision was clear and obviously wrong which VAR corrected but then they shouldn't have got involved to bring the play back to give a free kick outside the box. That is clearly out of their remit.

It shouldn't have been a freekick.

Of course it's inconsistent. The whole reason it exists is to offer the officials more control over the result.

Thats the thing, they were two separate challenges, one outside the box which wasnt given and then the one inside the box which was incorrectly given and then overturned. Even though they were close to each other they are separate incidents.
Title: Re: Man Utd (A) Sunday 01/02
Post by: SP on February 01, 2026, 02:29:20 PM
From the BBC match feed:

Surely Man United shouldn't have had a free kick leading to the goal, if you're checking whether or not it's a penalty, you can't then give a free kick, i.e. the whole point of VAR. It's re-refereeing the game? It should be a goal kick...
Joe, Newton Abbot

I'm now officially confused! We are told that VAR can't intervene for fouls outside the box. There was clearly no foul inside the box as the defender got the ball! Therefore, the decision should have been a corner to Utd or am I missing something?

They've had time to think of a reason:

'Factual overturn for VAR'
published at 14:38 GMT
14:38 GMT
Man Utd 1-0 Fulham
Dale Johnson
Football issues correspondent
Referee John Brooks gave the penalty because for the shirt pulling by Jorge Cuenca, which he thought had continued into the area.
Cuenca released Matheus Cunha's jersey before the Manchester United forward reached the box.
It is a factual overturn for the VAR, James Bell, based on where the foul took place. There is no need for the referee to go to the pitchside monitor.

We're reasonably compact but need more creative / attacking intent. This United team need a bit of a bloody nose - we're letting them dictate (with the ref's help)

I still think we should have started with a back 5. Robinson and Castagne (in particular Robinson) have struggled, and our midfield looked superb at times offensively but got bypassed quite easily defensively(although Berge has done a good job). 5 atb would have solved both those things.

Don't get the Chukwueze and ESR criticism. I thought both were more effective than Wilson.

Ref has been terrible.

Joe, Newton Abbot

I'm now officially confused! We are told that VAR can't intervene for fouls outside the box. There was clearly no foul inside the box as the defender got the ball! Therefore, the decision should have been a corner to Utd or am I missing something?

Not sure about back 5 but agree Chuk and ESR both doing well, Wilson quiet and we need Iwobi to pick him out in and around the box because he has minimal impact in the midfield areas.

He's putting in some good crosses, something Jedi never really does well. But keeping that set up allows ESR to sit in that gap as he drops back, from there it's a matter of who comes to support him whether it be Raul (who drags Maguire with him) or Wilson/Iwobi.

Surely we were all told that Var shouldn't have interfered in the incident when Muniz trod on the chelsucm players foot in the build up to Kings goal earlier in the season.
Not only was it not a foul but also VAR had no right to comment on it.

Same with today, the ref never gave the foul and its not VAR's place to change decisions on fouls.

But what the F does the average fan know!

Robinson and Chukwueze doesn't work, Chuk staying wide and putting crosses in, so Robinson not offering much going forward. Either bring on Kevin to go on the left or bring on Sess for AR.

Wilson fairly quiet but he often is before he pops up with a goal or assist.

I don't think Sess is better defensively so wouldn't help by much imo. I do think Robinson has been our worst player today though

I think you're stuck with the Sess of two years ago, he's much more solid these days.

Cairney for Iwobi. See if he can exert some control and calm throughout the team.

Esr off for Kevin. Push Chuk right, keep Kevin left. Tuck Wilson in behind Raul.

Our midfield looks much better with an actual midfielder (TC) than with a winger/attacking midfielder(Iwobi). We really need a new cm asap.

Excellent pk by Raul.

Iwobi as good as he is creating chances, we're far too lightweight. I would chuck £25m at Brighton for Ayari tomorrow as he's out of contract next year

Just lapse in concentration at the wrong times. Not really anyone to blame, but I'm sure someone will go that route. Think it was a really good showing against an in-form team that has a lot of momentum. I don't think this loss will ruin ours by any means. Hopefully we can get another signing in to move on very quickly. COYW.

No

Great argument, they'll be printing that on a tea towel one day. Inspirational.
I'll grant you it's not inspirational, but at least it's not overly emotional nonsense like the comment I was replying to.

Ultimately it's Man U away and they've got the "new manager" honeymoon period.

However, I was disappointed by Marco's resistance to making substitutions. It took some 10 minutes after the 2nd goal went in before we made our changes.

Right at the end, Bassey and Anderson to allow them that chance to win it was inexcusable. Let's reflect.. they picked the ball up literally on the half way line practically on the wide right. We had both our CBs back. How did they let them get a shot on goal? It's surely basic Premier League defending. Bassey was far too advanced and over committed himself. Anderson appeared completely at sea in the penalty box.

So frustrating.

Going forward, we need better balance. Can Bobb start on the right wing and push Wilson more central?

Not fed up with him, no. I think he us our best central defender.

A calamity of errors by two midlevel defenders.

Bassey gets turned by playing his man playing him too closely and not having enough pace to recover...and then who is Anderson marking?

That defensive pairing has mental lapses too often.

Anderson in particular.   You can't fall asleep like that.

If you want to start blaming people for that goal, you should start with the midfield and Ryan Sessegnon.

The only issues with that sequence was Bassey getting fooled by Fernandes, but that's a bad mismatch. That's a lapse in concentration from Bassey, but he hadn't done much defending since he was on, so yes I agree Marco possibly should have brought him in earlier. Regardless, the job's the job. I don't think Andersen expected a low ball against their massive striker in Sesko where the previous cross was a high one when he headed off the post. That's the quality Fernandes brings and United brought in general. From Casemiro's goal and his no-look assist, with Fernandes playing 1-2 flicks here and there.

Sess just created a goal through a 1-2 with Kevin upfront but he's now to blame for defensive errors by our CBs?

I'm sorry but you had to concede that our CBs should've done better there.

I'm not surprised the result as it's Man U away.. but we have to learn from these mistakes or else we won't improve.

I really think a holding mid...or a top flight starting CB is a much bigger need than a striker by the end of the tranfer window, but that's just me apparently.

I've not been a fan of Bassey starting for over a year.

You bring in a better starter..pushes Bassey down the depth chart.

I wrote "IF" yiu want ti blame individuals (I don't), Sess was way out of position for their winner, and there was collective midfield failure to track back too. But if people wanr to scapegoat Andersen for evey goal we concedee that is their prerogative.
