Moment of the Match: Fulham are unbeaten this season except by VAR and this was yet another match in which faceless, unaccountable men in an office interfered wrongly in one of our games. Muniz jumped for the ball and was hauled down by a Brentford player and yet it was somehow Rodrigo's fault that the ball touched his arm as he tried to keep his balance after the foul on him? Make it make sense!

In the words of the noted football pundit JRR Tolkien, "September came in with golden days and Silva nights...."

There are few more golden Moments for a Fulham fan than watching our team thrash Brentford; to do so under the lights at Craven Cottage on a sparkly Silva night creates the best kind of memory.

Last season, in case anyone had forgotten, we did the double over Brentford in spectacular style. Harry Wilson, the Horror of Hounslow, scored the winner both times and we travelled home from the G-Tech in May on the Bus of Glory (number 267).

Brentford have had a torrid time since then, losing their crazy-eyed manager and half their squad. Not beating them on Saturday was unthinkable. Despite having a fan base desperate to see Kevin start, Marco stuck with last week's line-up because it was solid and successful...and because he's Marco.

Brentford arrived in a kit inspired, oddly, by the sewage-choked rivers of Britain; the flame throwers coughed out some feeble fireworks and the football match kicked off.

We use the term "football match" advisedly here because it soon became apparent that Brentford, who were once a decent footballing side (at least when they weren't playing Harry Wilson) don't play football anymore. They play a new and frustrating game where the aim is to win as many throw-ins as possible, create corners from the long throws and (presumably because this didn't actually happen) score from the corners.

Initially, Fulham, who like to play fast, free-flowing football with their actual feet, found these frustrating tactics difficult to deal with. It was hard to construct a convincing attack when our opponent's aim was only to disrupt and derail. We made matters harder for ourselves by dicing with danger at the back and when the inevitable mistake came and Josh King gave the ball away, Brentford took an unjust lead.

But, when you hit a wrong note, it's the next note that determines whether it was good or bad.

Josh was furious with himself, teenage anguish distorting his face. But Alex wrapped him in a hug, his teammates high fived him and the crowd immediately started to sing his name. You won't see a Moment all season that's more Fulham than that.

And Josh immediately put the mistake behind him and made amends by stepping up his pace and effort and pulling his teammates with him. For the next ten minutes it was all Fulham - a white rip tide cutting through the sludge. Alex's goal came at the end of a fast full-team attack. The ball pinballed around as Brentford flung bodies and possibly arms in front of it but Alex controlled it and struck with one movement - through the legs of a defender and past the outstretched goalie. It wasn't a pretty goal but it didn't need to be.

The second goal, however, was a thing of beauty. Muniz stormed forward with the ball and passed it to Alex. Harry pointed to where he wanted it and Alex obliged with an inch-perfect, ground skimming pass so good that Harry didn't have to alter his stride to take it first time and sweep it past the goalie. He'd done it again. Two goals in two minutes and Fulham were ahead as we deserved to be.

Things got even better shortly after half time when Fulham's top scorer Own Goal struck again with a remarkably similar effort to his winner against Leeds last week. Sess provided a swooping cross and the Brentford player did the rest. This was the highlight of an exceptional performance from Our Boy who battled, baffled and bossed all game. It's been a slow burn but Sess is back to his best with a new physicality to add to his instinctive skill.

Muniz's goal being disallowed was hugely disappointing partly because it was such a good finish and partly because it nullified his lovely celebration with Raúl. Also, you can't help feeling that from 4-1 we could have had a cricket score (God only knows how Brentford's unimaginative manager would set up a team to play cricket).

As it was, we never looked liked scoring again while they continued with their one-dimensional method. Throw, corner, header away, rinse and repeat. Those headers away, whilst unglamorous, were essential and flawless. Bassey, Berge and Tete all took turns in clearing the danger but no one did more than Captain Andersen who simply made a mockery of the whole concept of the Long Throw as a football tactic. Joachim is exactly who you want as your team leader - decisive and commanding but quick to intervene and even quicker to congratulate. In front of the defence, Saša Lukić was once again excellent in a roving role. His set pieces are metronomically reliable and his next goal can't be far away!

Marco took his time with the subs because that's what he usually does....and he's a genius who knows better than any of us.

Kevin was less impactful than last week but still brought some outrageous skills into the mix. Our brilliant Brazilian is the antithesis of a Long Throw merchant. Cuenca was the pick of the bunch, shoring up the defence against a last gasp throw-in threat while Tom and Raúl added maturity and calm.

This was a scrappy game (but a clean one) and only entertaining because of the two goal cushion. Winning ugly is the mark of a good team and we've just done it twice in a row. Meanwhile, Brentford look like they're not long for this league so we should make the most of beating them while we still can.

Random musings:-

- It was disappointing not to see Chukwueze do anything more than warm up

- Imagine if Kevin and Samuel start against Cambridge!

- We were relieved to hear that Marco has got over his transfer window angst. "I love my job, I love the football club, every day is the best day in the world for me," he said in his prematch press conference (thanks to Jack Kelly for the report as ever). It's unusual - and welcome - to hear such heartfelt sentiments when he's normally more guarded (except on the touchline!)

- Kevin still hasn't got the memo about coming over to the Hammy End after the match. Maybe some in could send an email instead?

- Brentford's manager was wearing brown shoes with black trousers. Surely that deserves a points deduction?!

- And did he bring Fab on for the last 2 minutes just so he could be booed? What kind of manager does that?

- Will Muniz's effort win goal of the month in time honoured Fulham style?

- "Own goal again!"

- There were two Brentford fans sitting in front of us in the Hammy End. Suffice to say, they won't try that again.

This win leaves us in Seventh Kevin, temporarily for now but other than during the first half against Chelsea, it feels like we've barely seen what the team can do. With Kevin to start, Samuel to come in and Antonee to come back, there's so much more that we haven't even glimpsed yet.

Whisper it, but we should probably get used to feeling at home in the top half of the table.

28 years later: Party time in Cambridge


Fulham-Cambridge United matches do not happen very often, but the mention of this fixture will evoke particularly fond memories in fans of a certain age.

For many, 1996/97 is up there as one of the most fun seasons in the Club's history, one which culminated in a promotion party in Cambridge on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in May.

Ahead of our first meeting with the U's since that stunning day more than 28 years ago, we caught up with three individuals who were at Abbey Stadium that afternoon: Darren Freeman (who scored the only goal of the game), Mark Maunders (now the Club's Player Wellbeing Manager, but in the away end that day), and Ken Coton (Fulham photographer for many years).

Darren Freeman: "The atmosphere was unbelievable. It was a real party atmosphere. I've been at many games, over many, many years, and I know this sounds crazy, but the atmosphere was one of the best I've ever known. Just unreal, it really, really was. The atmosphere was just electric."

Ken Coton: "It was a memorable season. It had many highlights, and not just in Darren Freeman's flowing locks. How can we forget that magical day at Carlisle, Rob Scott's dashing looks, promotion achieved at Mansfield, losing just one of our last 15 matches – and Micky Adams throwing his shirt to adoring fans at the end of the Cambridge match. Everyone who played for us that season is a Fulham hero! I was privileged to have the best seat in the house – on the pitch by the goal – and Fulham's goals that season kept my camera clicking, from our opener at home to Hereford, to that winner at Cambridge in the very last match and in what was my first visit to the Abbey Stadium."

Mark Maunders: "It was lovely day, and a carnival atmosphere. The Fulham fans went there in their numbers, thousands of us – we took over two sides of the ground. I don't know what the exact figure was, but there were Fulham fans everywhere. What people will remember is the promotion deciders against Carlisle and then Mansfield, but then this was literally a day out, of celebration, because it was the culmination of 20 years of decline, financial difficulties."

Mark hits the nail on the head, as Fulham fans had not had much to cheer prior to that season.

MM: "The Club had really been in the doldrums for the best part of 20 years. So this was the first time that we'd achieved anything in that time. Ian Branfoot, and then Micky Adams, turned the Club around. It's interesting, because that Cambridge game, when you look at it, represents, if you like, the last game of the old Fulham. Because that's the last time Fulham played without big financial backing, as we got taken over that summer. So that game is like the last time Fulham were kind of competing on an equal playing field with teams."

DF: "The season before, Fulham were near the bottom of the league. I came from Gillingham by tribunal, and I remember the Gillingham chairman sort of saying, 'why do you want to go there, they nearly went down.' But, for me, as soon as I found out Fulham were interested in me, they were such a big club, it was a no-brainer. Probably the best move of my football career, going there, because I made such great memories, so many good friends. It was brilliant. And to do it with a special club, we had a great bond, the whole team. We had Chippy [Richard Carpenter], we had Morgs [Simon Morgan], etcetera, so, yeah, it was fantastic."

Freeman hit the only goal of the game with just 14 minutes played, and a very composed finish it was, too.

DF: "I went one on one with the keeper – [former Gillingham teammate] Scotty Barrett was in goal. I remember going through and I think I did a stepover and took it round him, and then slotted it in the corner. I remember it quite clearly – I didn't get many goals so I have to remember it!"

MM: "The actual game itself, I don't remember too much. I remember it was competitive, obviously I remember Darren Freeman's goal, which was great. It's more the occasion. You saw Fulham supporters, that had been watching all over those years, in tears because suddenly Fulham had achieved something. Everything that's happened since, kind of built on from that year and the end of that season, everything that's happened since, comes from that time."

Fulham had to better Wigan Athletic's result on the final day to claim the Division Three title, but a 2-0 win for the Latics earned them the trophy courtesy of their superior goals scored.

In typically Fulhamish style, we actually had a better goal difference than Wigan, but fell foul of a rule that had been championed by one of our own...

DF: "Yeah, good old Jimmy Hill, eh? God bless him."

KC: "Okay, so we were pipped to the championship by some other team (and by Jimmy Hill's rule change...!), but we were promoted – and on our way to restoring our position as a top club. And that after so nearly dropping out of the league altogether the previous season. Oh, how we fans suffer..."

MM: "It's one of those Fulhamish things, that we didn't win the league because of one of our directors, so that cost us a championship. There was a tinge of disappointment, but I would say only a tinge, because the important thing was we've been promoted. We felt we were a better team than Wigan, we really did think that we were the worthy champions, but it wasn't to be, and in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't that important. Fulham had done something, having been in such a bad state, such doldrums. You hear Peter Drury on the Fulham Fix podcast, talking about games at Port Vale, losing 6-0, losing to Chester 7-0. Look at where those clubs are now, and where we are. It's been fantastic, and it all goes back to that season."

Not many people have the intrinsic relationship with a football club that Mark has with Fulham, and from the way he speaks, it sounds like 1996/97 is right up there as one of his favourite seasons?

MM: "I think so. Fortunately, there's been some great seasons since, and even before, 81/82 was great, 74/75, but yeah, all the long-standing fans could see that Fulham had actually achieved something. From becoming a laughing stock for a lot of years, to suddenly having achieved something, albeit in the lowest league. All the people that had been to Swansea and Torquay in the dark days, and then you see them loving a day out in the sunshine in Cambridge. I'm sure people were bumping into people they'd been on the terraces at Swansea and Torquay with, and just hugging each other and milking it."

KC: "It's nearly 30 years since those dramatic days, but the memories remain vivid and happy. Oh, how we fans rejoice..."

Iwobi's message to King
Alex Iwobi spoke live to Sky Sports following the conclusion of Fulham's 3-1 win over Brentford on Saturday night.

What was said to Josh King after Brentford's goal...

I was one of the first to speak to him. 18 years of age – it was brave of him to show to feet and actually collect the ball on the edge of the box. It's something we work on in training, of course it doesn't always come off. I literally ran to him, the whole team said to him, 'you've got a lot of quality, just keep on doing your thing, and I'm sure we'll get back into the game.' Obviously he was grateful when I scored! He said, 'thank you, you got me out of a pickle!' He's such a talented young man, and it's something to learn from. But credit to him, he kept his head and kept going until he came off.

The performance...

It's up there with one of our best performances so far. We've been performing well, maybe results haven't been going our way, but to win at home again sends a message, and we'll use that as confidence going into next week.

Dealing with Brentford's threats...

We knew that Brentford are very good at long throws, so we worked on a lot of long throws in training this week, and we were working on the second balls and reacting to them. We were able to withstand that, which was the main threat today. And then we've got a lot of players who are able to create chances, so we believed we'd always have the opportunity to take our chances, and we were able to do so today.

His goal...

Like I said, we've been working on long throws and reacting to second balls, and it's the same thing when we're attacking. I couldn't really tell you where the ball was going to drop, you just have to stay on your toes, and luckily for me I was in the right spot at the right time. I just had to make sure I got a good contact and aim for the target. Luckily for me, it was able to go through a defender's legs, the 'keeper was unsighted, and it went in.

His assist for Harry Wilson...

Naturally, when you have that confidence, you feel like you're able to do anything. It's something me and Harry work on in training – when I see him, I know he's going to make the run in behind. Yeah, it was a tight gap, but credit to Rodri as well, he made a run to make that space for Harry. H is one of the best finishers in our team, and you see that from the finish today.

Fulham ticket update and info
Over 5,100 tickets have already been snapped up for Tuesday night's clash with Fulham, meaning one of the largest away followings in recent years will be roaring the U's on at Craven Cottage...

The last time United travelled in even greater numbers was the 2015 FA Cup Fourth Round replay at Manchester United, when 6,539 U's made the trip to Old Trafford.

Tickets remain on sale - both online and in-person - until 10am on Tuesday 23rd September, so make sure to secure yours if you haven't already.

Collection Information

    Tickets can be collected from the Cambridge United Club Store until 2pm on Tuesday, when the store will close.
    Any tickets not collected by this time will be sent to Fulham for collection from their Ticket Office ahead of kick-off.
    Ticket collections on the night will be from the Mobile Ticket Unit on Stevenage Road, by the Johnny Haynes statue, near turnstiles 1-17.

Iwobi nets for Fulham as Chukwueze awaits debut
Nigeria's Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi both featured in their side's 3-1 win over Brentford at Craven Cottage on Saturday, while teammate Samuel Chukwueze watched on from the sideline.

Mikkel Damsgaard took advantage of a mistake from Josh King in the 20th minute as the Bees were gifted the opener but Iwobi drew Fulham level in the 38th minute, burying a half-volley past Caoimhin Kelleher in goal for his first goal of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

The 29-year-old was involved again just two minutes later, providing an assist for Harry Wilson to put the Cottagers ahead going into the break.

The hosts pulled firmly ahead in the 50th minute as Ethan Pinnock conceded an own goal.

Bassey played the full game for Fulham while both his and Iwobi's Super Eagles teammate Chukwueze watched from the bench.

The 26-year-old signed for Fulham on 1 September on a season long loan deal from AC Milan. Although he did not feature at the weekend, the Nigerian international was selected on the bench for the fixture in his first game week at the club and could feature next to his international teammates soon.

Fulham sit eighth on the Premier League table, having managed eight points from their five fixtures.

Pre-Cambridge Press Conference
Marco Silva has been pleased with how his side's progress in cup competitions has improved throughout his tenure at the Club.

In his first season at the Cottage, Fulham played just two rounds in each of the FA and Carabao Cups, but have gone on to reach the latter stages of both in the years since.

And ahead of Tuesday's Third Round tie against League Two Cambridge United, Silva was asked how much of a priority the competition is.

"We are very serious," he replied. "I mentioned last round, we have to do our maximum – doesn't matter if you change one, two or 10 players, our ambition is to be in the next round.

"Massive respect, of course, to our opposition side, you know it's a chance for them to be in the highlights the next day after the match. All clubs, in all divisions, look for this competition as a chance always to be there, to have some spotlight, and we have to be really serious.

"But one of the things that pleased me more with this group of players, in terms of the approach in this type of competition, since the first game we played in this competition almost five years ago, that wasn't the best moment for a starting point for us.

"I understood some things that I changed straightaway, in terms of mindset and mentality for these type of competitions, and we have been really serious [since], and that was the reason why we have been achieving important stages of both cups throughout the last few seasons, and we want to do the same in the Carabao Cup.

"Playing at home, of course we are favourites, no doubts about it, but we have to prove on the pitch that we want to be in the next round, and this is our aim for the game."

Marco Silva hints at key Fulham selection boost for Carabao Cup tie
Premier League side will be strong favorites to overcome fourth-tier Cambridge at Craven Cottage

Antonee Robinson is in contention to feature in Fulham's Carabao Cup third round tie against Cambridge.

Robinson, who had minor knee surgery in May, hasn't played for Marco Silva's side since their 2-0 Premier League defeat by Chelsea before the international break.

The USA international has been eased back into action this season. He missed Fulham's opening game of the campaign against Brighton before coming off the bench against both Manchester United and Chelsea.

Silva admitted the plan had always been to rest the left-back against Brentford at the weekend, with a view to giving him more minutes against Cambridge.

"We are going to have another session before the game, and after that we are going to take a decision," Silva said on Monday.

"Probably it's going to be [Robinson] in contention for the game. That was our aim before the Brentford game to give him some more days to keep working on his fitness and all that stuff, his confidence and to be able to try to have as many minutes as he can tomorrow. It's a chance for him to be involved, yes."

Silva went on to deny that Robinson, who got the most assists of any defender in the Premier League last season, had suffered a setback in his recovery, with the Fulham boss keen to emphasise that they had to be careful.

"No it's not a setback, he's come from a surgery and he's a player who needs to be in physical conditions almost perfect because this game comes from his athleticism and all that stuff," Silva said.

"He needs to be there and he has to get some more confidence because he comes from an injury in the knee, but probably he's going to be there (against Cambridge)."

Fulham are favourites to beat League Two side Cambridge at Craven Cottage on Tuesday and seal their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

Silva is likely to rotate his squad, but wouldn't reveal whether he'd hand debuts to Deadline Day signings Samuel Chukwueze and Jonah Kusi-Asare.

Nigerian winger Chukwueze joined on loan from AC Milan with an option to buy set at between £22million-£26m.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old forward Kusi-Asare signed on loan from Bayern Munich, with Fulham holding the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

"They have to wait and let's see what is going to be my decisions," Silva continued.

"I don't prepare these games to give just one or two players a chance. They have been involved, they have been more time with us already, and naturally they are going to have more minutes because that was the reason why we signed them.

"But as (with) all the other players, they have to prove their quality as well, and (prove) that they are ready to start games."

Joachim Andersen is the perfect man to replace Tom Cairney as Fulham captain
Our Danish centre-back is enjoying a fine start to the campaign with the armband on.

What makes a great captain?

Is it their propensity to galvanise their teammates when things are going wrong? Is it their diplomacy skills when dealing with the referee? Or is it their ability to lead by example; by being consistently being the best player on the pitch?

Joachim Andersen is hitting all of these touchpoints so far this season – and he increasingly looks to be the perfect candidate to replace Tom Cairney as club captain once our skipper departs in the summer.

He's arrived
Joa's man-of-the-match performance against Brentford showed exactly what we paid £30m for him last summer. He was defensively resolute, and offensively astute, threading a wonderful long ball for Sess in the build-up to our third.

He came in for a fair bit of criticism last season, the majority of which was likely due to his price tag and age profile. We expected him to come in and hit the ground running, particularly as he knew the league well having performed so well for Crystal Palace for three years.

But he took a little while to re-acclimatise his to surroundings in SW6. That's not to say he had a terrible campaign. While defensively solid overall, he came in for criticism in some quarters for a dip in pace and a lack of long ball accuracy, something he was revered for in the past and certainly something we would've hoped for when paying for him.

But it looks like it was just Andersen finding his feet, and this season he's really purring. And it's clear Marco sees him as the man to lead the side. Scott Parker saw it too, of course, handing him the armband for almost half our games in 2020/21.

A long-term asset
There have been concerns about spending so much on a player of Andersen's age, leaving little-to-no resale value. But I'm a strong advocate of signing some players for the here and now. Frankly, who cares how much we get of Joa if he performs on the pitch during this five-year deal and starts to represent the club as our figurehead off it? He's then more than repaying his fee.

Andersen was born to be a captain. He has the defensive consistency and prowess of a Brede Hangeland (plus now the haircut to boot), the footballing brain of Danny Murphy in the way he reads the game, and he leads by performance on the pitch, much like TC and Luis Boa Morte in years gone by. He's got all the qualities you need from a captain. And if we can reap the benefits of that from him for the next four years, then £30m, in my opinion, is a snip.

We have enjoyed a really strong start to this campaign, and a lot of that is due to our robustness in defence. If we continue at this clip we could surpass 60 points, and if that happens who knows where that places us. One thing is for sure, we'll need Andersen firing on all cylinders if we want to get there.

Silva confident Wilson will sign new Fulham contract
Marco Silva is confident Harry Wilson will sign a new contract to remain at Fulham.

Wilson's deal is due to expire next year. During the summer the club kept him at Craven Cottage by taking up an option to extend his contract by 12 months.

Talks about a longer-term deal have been ongoing and boss Silva appears to be optimistic that an agreement will be reached.

Silva said: "He's not a player that is with me for just one month, two months or two years. This is the fifth season with us. It was my first signing in the football club when I joined and I know him very well.

"I know how much he wants to stay in the football club. Of course, conversations, they are there, with conversations between us and his representatives as well, and let's see what is going to happen.

"I know really the aim of him is to stay in the football club and if he can get an agreement, his future is going to be with us, 100% sure."

Wilson, 28, was wanted by Leeds in the final stages of the summer transfer window, with Fulham looking to bring in other wingers.

He ended up staying – and played against Leeds less than two weeks later.

"Never was it something that was concerning about a possible link with other clubs with him. But I think it's normal for a player with that quality that he has, with the last year on his contract," said Silva.

"I think these things are normal in terms of interest in him. For me it was not a situation and that was the reason he started the first Premier League game before the deadline."

Wilson told West London Sport in August that he was happy at Fulham and that negotiations were continuing over a new deal.

"There's definitely talks about that. I love it here and since I've come here I've felt very at home and playing in the Premier League," Wilson said.

"I would say there are talks about it happening. We're not close yet but let's see what happens in the next few months and see if we can get something agreed."

Fulham plan to make Harry Wilson U-turn after Leeds deal collapse
Fulham are planning to chance their stance on the future of Harry Wilson after his proposed move to Leeds United fell through on deadline day.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Fulham could now offer Wilson a new contract to extend his stay at Craven Cottage.

Wilson has featured in all five Premier League games under Marco Silva so far this season, and scored in their 3-1 West London derby victory against Brentford.

However, as things stand, his contract is set to expire at the end of the season when he will be allowed to discuss the possibility of a free transfer elsewhere.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 13 September that Leeds remains keen on signing Wilson despite missing out during the summer.

Harris urges U's to 'stand strong' against Fulham
Cambridge United boss Neil Harris has accepted his side will have to rely on scraps of possession as they look to cause a Carabao Cup upset against Fulham on Tuesday.

The U's knocked out Championship side Charlton Athletic in the second round and now step up to tackle a Fulham team currently eighth in the Premier League.

It is the first meeting between the two sides in the competition since 1971 - when Fulham won 4-0 - and first of any kind for 28 years.

"Let's be honest, we're going to dominate the ball and run the game, are we?" manager Harris told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"We know where we're at as a group, how we're going to develop and progress, and this is just another rung on the ladder," Harris said.

"We've had two cup victories and four league victories already this season, and played so well in so many games, but this is a different challenge for us.

"Can we stand strong for 90 minutes? Can we step up and against players who deservedly play in leagues above us?

"Whatever 11 they put out is going to be extremely impressive. They made a lot of changes and won comfortably in the last round against a mid-table Championship side [Bristol City]."

Cambridge last progressed beyond round three in the 1992-93 season. They went on to reach the quarter-finals before losing 3-2 to Blackburn Rovers.

And Harris has urged whoever is picked at Craven Cottage to go out and "showcase themselves".

He said: "We're going to have to be as professional as we can be. We're going to have to defend extremely well as a unit. When we go into 1 v 1 battles, we're going to have to be the best we possibly can in those moments, [and] rely on the goalkeeper to make some saves for us.

"And in the transitional moments, we're going to have make sure we take care of the first action, try and sustain some attacks when the opportunities arise, and if we're fortunate enough to end up in a set-piece situation, make sure we're as good as we can be in those moments."

One player likely to get an opportunity for the U's is former Norwich, Bristol City, Swansea and Derby County midfielder Korey Smith, who has not played since January because of a knee injury.

It will be the first game he has played under Harris, who said: "I've played against him many times over the years and seen his ability and leadership qualities.

"I like having him on the training pitch as part of the group and in the ground on matchdays, he's a winner."

Marco Silva is confident that Fulham can agree a new contract with Harry Wilson.

Wilson had been prepared to leave in search of more regular minutes, but has since become a mainstay in Silva's side, scoring against Brentford on Saturday.

"No, he's not going to (be) distract(ed) at all," the Fulham boss said. "I know him very well, he's not a player that is with me just one month, two months or two years.

"It's his fifth season with us. It was my first signing in this football club when I joined and I know him very well. For me, it was never a problem and I know really how much he wants to stay in the club.

"Of course, conversations (will be had) between us and his representatives as well, and let's see what is going to happen, but I know really the aim of him is to stay in the football club, and if we can get an agreement, his future is going to be with us."

Wilson has played in every game for Fulham so far this season, but will have increased competition following the Deadline Day arrival of Samuel Chukwueze on loan from AC Milan.

Silva, though, is adamant that Wilson is part of his plans and has no doubt about the winger's ambition to pen fresh terms.

"He's 100 per cent sure, he's part of the business, of course he's looking for what is best for him like the club is trying to get the best for the football club, but I know what his aim is," Silva said.

"I think it's normal, a player with the quality that he has and (into the) last year (of his) contract in terms of interest in him.

"For me, it was not a situation, that was the reason he started the first Premier League game before Deadline Day, and he had a great pre-season, probably was the player that had the best pre-season."

Manchester United are looking at Marco Silva as a possible option to replace Ruben Amorim with if at all they decide to part ways with their manager.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have maintained a list of potential candidates to replace Ruben Amorim. Marco Silva is also being looked at for the post, if at all the Red Devils ended up parting ways with Amorim, which looks unlikely at this stage, owing to multiple factors.

Ruben Amorim has become the constant topic in the media as speculation surrounding his future at Manchester United continues to be a subject of discussion. There are no clear indications that the club are ready to sack him as multiple reports are running different narratives about his immediate future.

A recent report stated that Manchester United may not sack Amorim owing to the financial implications such a decision would bring, with suggestions that his departure could cost them £12 million. There have been names mentioned in other reports that the club are already considering replacing the Portuguese with.

Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner were mentioned recently, while there are others like Gareth Southgate, long linked with an appointment for INEOS. Meanwhile, Marco Silva is the latest to be linked with a switch to Manchester United, with the Portuguese manager considered high on their shortlist.

Silva was reportedly dissatisfied at Fulham earlier in the summer, given they were inactive for large periods in the window. For now, the 48-year-old Premier League manager has stayed with the Cottagers, but his future there is not considered foolproof and completely secure.

What makes a great captain?

Is it their propensity to galvanise their teammates when things are going wrong? Is it their diplomacy skills when dealing with the referee? Or is it their ability to lead by example; by being consistently being the best player on the pitch?

Joachim Andersen is hitting all of these touchpoints so far this season – and he increasingly looks to be the perfect candidate to replace Tom Cairney as club captain once our skipper departs in the summer.

He's arrived
Joa's man-of-the-match performance against Brentford showed exactly what we paid £30m for him last summer. He was defensively resolute, and offensively astute, threading a wonderful long ball for Sess in the build-up to our third.

He came in for a fair bit of criticism last season, the majority of which was likely due to his price tag and age profile. We expected him to come in and hit the ground running, particularly as he knew the league well having performed so well for Crystal Palace for three years.

But he took a little while to re-acclimatise his to surroundings in SW6. That's not to say he had a terrible campaign. While defensively solid overall, he came in for criticism in some quarters for a dip in pace and a lack of long ball accuracy, something he was revered for in the past and certainly something we would've hoped for when paying for him.

But it looks like it was just Andersen finding his feet, and this season he's really purring. And it's clear Marco sees him as the man to lead the side. Scott Parker saw it too, of course, handing him the armband for almost half our games in 2020/21.

A long-term asset
There have been concerns about spending so much on a player of Andersen's age, leaving little-to-no resale value. But I'm a strong advocate of signing some players for the here and now. Frankly, who cares how much we get of Joa if he performs on the pitch during this five-year deal and starts to represent the club as our figurehead off it? He's then more than repaying his fee.

Andersen was born to be a captain. He has the defensive consistency and prowess of a Brede Hangeland (plus now the haircut to boot), the footballing brain of Danny Murphy in the way he reads the game, and he leads by performance on the pitch, much like TC and Luis Boa Morte in years gone by. He's got all the qualities you need from a captain. And if we can reap the benefits of that from him for the next four years, then £30m, in my opinion, is a snip.

We have enjoyed a really strong start to this campaign, and a lot of that is due to our robustness in defence. If we continue at this clip we could surpass 60 points, and if that happens who knows where that places us. One thing is for sure, we'll need Andersen firing on all cylinders if we want to get there.

Exclusive: Lee Hendrie names the best 3 EFL Championship players of all time
There have been a plethora of quality players to have graced the Championship at some point in their careers.

Players who have gone on to be full-time internationals, winning trophies at the height of the domestic and continental games, have either started down in the English second tier or have had to drop down to realise their top-class potential.

Picking out the definitive top three greatest Championship players of all time is an incredibly tough task, but former Aston Villa midfielder and current EFL pundit Lee Hendrie has named his during an exclusive interview with Football League World.

There are plenty of factors to take into account here. Should just the time spent in the Championship count, or should it include the wider context of their careers? In the end, Hendrie decided to provide a mixture of both, listing three players who dominated in short bursts in the second tier, before going on to bigger and better things.

 Lee Hendrie prefaced his answers by stating that it's a "difficult one" to single out just three players, but he initially outlined Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose most dominant moments during his time in England came in the Championship with Fulham, especially in the 2021/22 campaign, where he netted 43 in 44 en route to the title.

"Just looking back, and one who stands out to me is Mitrovic," Hendrie said. "He scored bundles of goals at Fulham.

"You felt that at one stage he was just going to be a Championship player; when Fulham went up, he didn't really meet the expectation levels of what he was in the Championship, where he scored so many goals and was an absolute handful.

In the end, Mitrovic's goalscoring antics did translate to the top flight, and he's spent the last few seasons terrorising defences in the Saudi Professional League.

Secondly, Hendrie mentioned Jack Grealish, who was a big part of the Aston Villa sides that spent three seasons in the Championship in the late 2010s.

"For me, [Grealish] was absolutely unbelievable when he was with Villa in the Championship," Hendrie continued.

"He was key going forward for them and had a massive say in their promotion, being the captain at the time."

Grealish would go on to join Manchester City for £100 million and win the Champions League. Similarly, Hendrie's third pick, Gareth Bale, went on to achieve continental success at Real Madrid, winning the Champions League five times.

Bale only played one season in the English second tier, helping Southampton reach the play-offs as a 17-year-old in the 2006/07 campaign, but his influence was enough to land him among the best to ever do it at the level.

"You look at the likes of Bale, who played in the Championship, and you think to yourself how good he was," Hendrie said.

"Obviously, he went on to bigger and better things, as did all three of these players. So much quality to watch, and that's why they went on to be so successful, be that at Real Madrid, Manchester City, and obviously, Mitrovic moved to Saudi Arabia, where he's smashed it out of the park.

"These players have been top Championship players in my eyes, but I've probably missed some out, there's been so many!"

Picking just three top Championship players is almost impossible
 As Hendrie alluded to, there are so many talents who have graced the English second tier, from those who spent the early stages of their careers here, such as Bale and Grealish, to those who enjoyed their primes in the Championship, like Mitrovic did.

Then you factor in those whose majority of their careers took place in the Championship and excelled as a top second-tier operator; the likes of Peter Whittingham and Billy Sharp, to name a couple.

It goes to show how incredible a division the Championship is — that you can take players at different stages of their careers and create a competitive, fun league with plenty of talented individuals.

Any top three will divide opinion, but you can't argue against the quality that Bale, Grealish and Mitrovic had both in the Championship and then later on in their careers.

Marco Silva trying to avoid Fulham player 'breaking down' – Worry over muscle strain
Raúl Jiménez started for Fulham in their 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion in the first game of this season and that's been his only start in the Premier League so far.

The striker's situation at Fulham didn't impact his role with Mexico as he started in both matches earlier this month, playing 16 minutes for Fulham since the international break.

Jiménez's restricted role has seen him linked with a move away from Fulham, mostly by the Mexican media, and 365Scores have an update on why Marco Silva hasn't utilised him regularly.

They have found out from sources close to the 34-year-old that he's 'recovering from a muscle strain' that he suffered while in action for the national team in September.

Therefore, Marco Silva has handed him less minutes in recent weeks as a precautionary measure, to 'avoid injury' and prevent Jiménez from 'breaking down'.

The Mexico national team's medical staff have 'coordinated a physical training plan' with Fulham to manage his workload. Jiménez knows that a muscle tear would 'keep him out of rhythm for months' and that won't help him be at his best for the next World Cup.

The same sources have informed 365Scores that the Fulham player is expected to start a match in two weeks even though he's now 100% fit.

West Ham United and Fulham had interest in Rômulo Cardoso before he completed a permanent move from Göztepe SK to RB Leipzig in the summer window.

Two months ago, we covered claims from Turkey that Fulham had offered €16m for the striker, while the Süper Lig side's owner, Sport Republic had reportedly requested at least €20m to sell him.

As well as Fulham, West Ham were also said to have looked at the 23-year-old to improve their attack.

On August 15th, he completed a move to Leipzig and Leipziger Volkszeitung, a newspaper local to the German club, have published an interview with the Brazilian.

He explained a move to the Bundesliga has helped the attacker fulfil one of his dreams.

"Being in the Bundesliga now is, of course, a dream come true for me. It's one of the top leagues in the world. I'll do my best here to help the team get back into Europe," he said.

The newspaper points it out that many players would prefer the Premier League over the Bundesliga, but he only wanted Leipzig despite interest from West Ham and Fulham.

LVZ specifically mentioned the two London clubs, and the South American explained why he picked the German side over West Ham and Fulham.

"I think it's down to the club's philosophy and mentality. Behind you is the club's motto: 'You can do anything', you can do and achieve anything. We can do anything. We play intense football. That thrilled me," Rômulo explained.

The frontman has scored two goals from four games for Leipzig so far.

Leeds United transfer news as Fulham boss outlines Harry Wilson contract talks and Whites move stance
Leeds United saw a late move for the Fulham and Wales winger fall through.

Fulham manager Marco Silva is confident Harry Wilson will commit his future to the Cottagers after a late-summer transfer to Leeds United fell through.

Leeds made a surprise deadline-day move for Wilson in their ultimately failed attempts to further strengthen Daniel Farke's attacking unit, falling victim to a late change of heart from Fulham. Elland Road chiefs submitted a deal sheet as the deadline passed but were eventually left wanting as those at the other end of a potential transfer pulled out.

Managing director Robbie Evans told the YEP Leeds submitted an offer above the 'right price' and were given an indication a late deal for Wilson could be done with Fulham. That deal never materialised but speculation continued, particularly given the winger has now entered the final year of his Craven Cottage contract.

Since that potential move to Elland Road fell through, Wilson has started Fulham's last two games including a 1-0 home win over Leeds and a 3-1 victory against Brentford in which he scored a lovely goal. And Cottagers boss Silva appears supremely confident this season will not be the 28-year-old's last in West London.

"I know him very well, he's not a player that is with me just one month, two months or two years," Silva told the Evening Standard. "It's his fifth season with us. It was my first signing in this football club when I joined and I know him very well. For me, it was never a problem and I know really how much he wants to stay in the club.

The Whites then drew another blank at Fulham but produced a clinical attacking performance to beat Wolves 3-1 on Saturday.

New signings Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anton Stach and Noah Okafor were all on target for the Whites at Molineux, with all three goals coming inside 14 first-half minutes. Leeds are now 12th in the Premier League and welcome Bournemouth to Elland Road on Saturday.

"It has been so nice to see the competition between both and the respect that they have for each other and the support. They have a good relationship outside of the pitch. Every single day, they are on the same table eating meals and have a good relationship even if they know they are fighting for a place."

Fulham finally followed through with squad depth in the wide areas on deadline day to give Silva some more options. He is willing to work with the players to make sure they have their time to shine.

Marco Silva has provided an update on Harry Wilson's Fulham future following interest from Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

It was our exclusive at Leeds United News which first revealed Leeds' interest in Harry Wilson, with a loan bid from Leeds to Fulham rejected initially in the mid-afternoon of deadline day.

It was then revealed that the deal for Wilson and Leeds was still alive permanently, especially if Fulham found attacking players to replace Wilson, with a number of big-money deadline day moves eyed by the Cottagers.

Fulham even agreed to two Wilson replacements but the deal was still not guaranteed with the hours then counting down to the deadline at 7pm. Then, Wilson to Leeds looked in doubt amid the need for a deal sheet to finalise a deal with Fulham.

It was later clear that the 28-year-old was not coming and the crucial details of the transfer collapse between Fulham, Leeds, and Wilson have been revealed since.

Now in Division One South East, Fulham have won their first five league games to make quite an impression on the league.

Fulham have taken the FA Women's National League by storm as they carried their unbeaten run into Tier 4.

Ellie Olds and Jade Bradley were part of the Cottagers' victorious Tier 5 campaign that saw them win 20 and draw two of their matches on the way to promotion.

Now in Division One South East, Fulham have won their first five league games to make quite an impression on the league.

"I think last season, knowing that we had to win every game really, to get out of that league was important and I think that has spilled over into this season," Olds said.

"I think it'd be silly to say that you wouldn't want to win the league. Whether that's really ambitious, I don't know, but we'll see.

"At the moment, obviously, we're doing well. But we're five games in and it's a long season and a lot can happen."

Bradley added: "We know we've got the squad to compete, and that's what this season's all about.

"If it means we get more points on the board than other teams, then brilliant, and if not, then as long as we're showing up and doing what we do, week in, week out, we can't really complain."

After three agonising years of third placed finishes in the regional league, Fulham finally achieved their goal of reaching the FA WNL. 

The success sent a wave of relief washing across the club, which had come so close so often, especially Olds, who was involved in all three near misses.

She said: "It meant a lot. We were trying to get out for many years. So there have been a few of us who've been there for quite a few years and have been through a lot of changes.

"So, to finally get the promotion, I know it meant a lot to everyone, team, teammates, staff, squad and fans."

Fulham started their 25/26 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cambridge United, snatching three points right at the death as Olds scored with only added time remaining. 

The result over their fellow title challengers has proved to be a springboard for the Cottagers, who are now the only unbeaten side remaining in Division One South East. 

Bradley, who joined from Tier 3 side Watford in February, said: "You can prep all you want, but nothing matches that first game, and how that feels. You could play your best, you could play your worst at the end of the day. I think for that game, you want points. 

"So, to come away with three points from the first game in Tier 4 was important as a club, but especially for us girls as well, considering the work that has been put in. 

"It carried over from last season, knowing we had to get points on the board, that mentality didn't really drop."

With such high ambitions around the club, recruitment focused on bringing in players who could drive the group forward to reach the lofty heights that Fulham are aiming for.

As a result, aiding the Cottagers' efforts this season are a raft of new signings that have been brought in to make sure they can compete at a higher level.

Katie Dungate joined from Northern Premier Division champions Nottingham Forest, having also spent time in WSL2 with Birmingham City.
Taome Oliver and Molly Holder also joined from Tier 3 sides to bolster Steve Jaye's squad.

Bradley said: "We've got girls that have played in the Championship and Tier 3, that have come in and that are pushing everyone, and I think that's the good thing about it. 

"If you were to go off stats, I'd say Katie Dungate has done very well at the start of the season. But honestly, in terms of the squad, everyone's levels have gone higher and higher."

The manager in question is Marco Silva, currently manager of London rivals Fulham who sit in eighth place with two wins, two draws and one loss.

Ironically, Silva's current contracts expires at the end of this season, and the Portuguese manager is yet to sign an extension.
There are some reports suggesting this is why West Ham are looking for a short term option, with a view to approaching Silva for the role next year.

The 48 year old transitioned into management in 2011 where he guided minnows Estoril into the Primeira Liga. In 2014 he joined Portugese giants Sporting CP, finishing third and won the Taca De Portugal. Then in 2015-2016 at Olympiakos he won the Greek Super League with a 79.17% win rate. In 2017 he suffered relegation with Hull City, yet earned plaudits for revitalising the squad. He then joined Watford and had his head turned by Everton where he struggled for consistency and was sacked in 2019. Craven Cottage has been his home since 2021 where he achieved promotion to the Premier League and stabilised the club with a number of top ten finishes.

Silva's hallmark is attacking football with tactical flexibility, and his work at Fulham has been particularly impressive, which has not gone unnoticed by the West Ham board. Stories in the media rumoured Silva to be the favoured option of Hammers' shareholder Daniel Kretinsky: No substance that we know of, but yet the rumours persist.
