Title: Bovril
Post by: Peabody on May 01, 2026, 12:02:17 PM
Does the modern fan appreciate Bovril and it's capacity to warm you up

Yes, appreciative of it as a drink and also as the only suitable topping for a buttered crumpet (trust me, just try it!)

Also appreciate the club continues to sell it at the catering outlets.  I often ask the casual staff whether they have ever tried it, the answer is invariably "no" and expressions of distaste.  But I'm just happy when they know what it is.  One time I was asked "would you like apple sauce with it?".  Was tempted to say yes but feared that it would result in a porky bap and a whole load of deepened confusion, so I nipped the problem in the bud and will probably never know what might have been.

I am as you might gather, considered high risk for bovine spongiform encephalopathy.  But life is for living.  Viva Bovril.

Whether this makes me a modern fan or an eccentric crank....

Hmmm
Discussing being warmed up and buttering crumpet.
What next I ask myself.
I first thought I had wandered on to a dating app.

H4 is the man for warming up, not sure what he feels about crumpets though?

I tend to prefer an oxo cube in boiling water.

Last season I took my son to watch our U21's play at Maidenhead, I spotted they sold Bovril so decided to buy 2 cups, I managed about 2 sips, my son drank half of his, I can honestly say it was revolting.
I can vaguely remember having a Bovril brought for me every now and then at Craven cottage by my dad, but had vowed not to ever drink it again, but nostalgia got the better of me and against my better judgement I brought myself and my son a Bovril, surprised my son didn't phone Childline !

Tend to buy supermarket own brands. Tastes just as good at often half the price.

Would argue peanut butter is a better topping for crumpets though.

I have peanut butter on toast in the morning, my wife who is Thai and has a sense of humour (usually rude) says, 'why do you put sh+t on your toast?'

My father in law (God rest his soul) used to have buttered fingers of bread which he dipped into a cup of Bovril

I must say it was lovely
