Title: MLS season to kickoff Tuesday
Post by: RidgeRider on March 13, 2011, 07:37:56 PM
I say this every year but I am going to really try and follow this league more closely this year. I think one of the reason is that Seattle last year and now my team as a child, the Portland Timbers are in the league as well as Vancouver. From the age of 13-20 I lived in Portland and attended a few games at Portland's Civic stadium in the later 70's, probably 1976 or 1977. There were some English players on that team, I believe Clyde Best was one of them. Anyway it was my introduction to the Pro game.

At the same time my geographic team is the San Jose Earthquakes who also play at my alma mater. So I have two teams to follow.

Anyway, any of you have a strong feeling about who will win the conference tables? Or is the league just not interesting enough?

I'm going to give it more than a shot also. Despite the fact that I intended to watch more MLS last season, I actually wound up watching less. Why? Well, if they played at 0900 central on Saturday morning like the Prem does, I'd probably watch as often as I do then. Problem is that their midweek games are always when I have evening commitments and their weekend games are usually when I'm out working with the band.

With The Prem I can watch three complete games between 0630 and 1300. Not possible with MLS.

I will give it a shout this year. Looking into the New York RedBull situation (I will bring the vodka). Haven't watched a MLS game yet, but I will this season and certainly do a match report and experience ala Mr HatterDon but instead of South Texas, it will be from the heart of Harlem.

I don't know what to expect, so this could be real fun and an experience.  :045:

There's already a thread about this on FUSA, not gonna write all the same stuff on both sites like I did for the MLS draft.  That was just plain silly.

Now that is the way to win me over.  I look forward to your write-ups Mr. Finn.

Ridge here is an interesting article on Portlands manager John Spencer.  Worth a read. I will be following Portland because of Darlington Nagbe.  He is an Akron alum and a really sweet kid.  He came from the same academy that my son will now play for.  They produced two of this year's 10 MLS generation addidas signings.

http://sport.scotsman.com/football/Interview-John-Spencer-Portland-Timbers.6733172.jp (http://sport.scotsman.com/football/Interview-John-Spencer-Portland-Timbers.6733172.jp)

I have a love-hate relationship with MLS.  While I think Garber and Co. have done an excellent job in running the league, they really really piss me off on how they ignore the center of the nation(s).  Houston and the Crew are two of the most successful teams in MLS history, yet zero Crew games and one Dynamo game are being broadcast by ESPN.  Dallas made it to the Cup final last season and ESPN is broadcasting zero of their games.  In contrast, the Red Bulls will have 8 games broadcast, the Galaxy 5, and the Sounders 5.  This despite the fact that the best youth soccer talent is being developed right where I sit here in the Great Lakes Region (speaking of which, zero Toronto games are being broadcast by ESPN).  Since US soccer and MLS started the Youth Development Academy system, every championship, except for one, has been won by a team from the Great Lakes Division at each age group.  I could go on about  how this region performs at the high school and college level, but I'm sure I've already done that.  The fact is MLS is shafting us even though we obviously love and know the game.  I may wirte a letter

Mo thanks for the link to that article. I enjoyed it and am feeling more more like Portland will be my team this year just because of my childhood memories.

It's too bad you don't know how to cut and paste your comments, on FUSA, over here so you can share with another group, who respect your views. I wish you would.

I had no idea that the coverage was so lousy for mid-America teams on the national broadcasts. I guess it comes down to ratings but still. Can you watch matches on Fox or the local cable sports channels in your area?

Good on ya Finn. We can have East Coast-Best Coast rivalry weeks when the your Vodka boys play the tree-huggers or the tech-boys.

I kept up better last year than years previous but not as much as I hoped...the local club, FC Dallas, was quite good.  As Mo alludes to though, coverage is sparse, even locally.  The Club had to petition local media just to cover them in the Final.

With Mo & Hatter, I wished coverage was more diverse.  I hoped a deal would have been reached between MLS and a station like Versus.  Have games on certain days and set times as often as possible - showcase the entire League, not just the teams you think the fans want to see.

An attempt at looking at the teams:
In non-abbreviated terms (for you Finn)
Tier 1:  These teams have every reason to believe that 2011 is their year
LA Galaxy
Real Salt Lake
New York Red Bulls

Tier 2:  May not be in contention for the Supporter's Shield but they have every reason to believe they can raise the Cup
Seattle Sounders
FC Dallas
Colorado Rapids
San Jose Earthquakes (condolences to those in Japan)
Columbus Crew (East will be weak)

Tier 3: These teams need a couple of things to close the gap : 2 teams will get in with the extra playoff spots.
Sporting Kansas City
Houston Dynamo (Eastern team this year)
Philadelphia Union
DC United (Great off-season; no where but up this year)

Tier 4: As Biden said, "God love 'em"
Chicago Fire
Toronto FC
Chivas USA (could do better with Fraser, interested to see how he does)
New England (see DCUnited last year)

Expansion Tier:  Can these teams get 25-30 points?  Who knows but we'll find out...
Portland Timbers
Vancouver Whitecaps
Go FCD!

We get the occasional Houston match, but never Dallas. The problem with the national matches is that there's the usual TV bias towards NYC and LA. The latter having two sides makes it worse.

And here's one of the problems with soccer in the USA.

Marquee opening night matchup between Galaxy and Seattle

Great gaggle of looney fans dancing and singing all night in the rain even in defeat

One time zone over, and on the ONLY other English-language network to show football, Rio Salt Lake is playing a CONCACAF Champions League Semi-final first leg against Saprissa.

Why, when there's such a small television audience for the sport do they do this?

By the way, the Galaxy looked as if they'd just been introduced to each other about 45 minutes before kickoff. Terrible passing by both teams all night long, and Beckham looked as if he were having a back garden kickaround with his kids. Poor advertisement for MLS in my book.

I read that the MLS expansion fee is now $40 million.  My stomach now hurts, Cleveland doesnt stand a chance, at least not until California runs out of water and they all move to the North Coast.  Garber bragged about it so I'm beginning to wonder if my opinion of him is too high.  Can someone explain the positive aspects of that fee to me?  In a league that has less TV coverage than poker and the WNBA?  Oh well, I'll just have to be happy being an Akron supporter.   Caleb Porter is the best man in the business over here anyway so it's not so bad.

Just for you Ridge, here is a video for Portland fans. BTW, the sentiments in this video are kind the same ones that led me to "attack" you for not supporting the US MNT.

I coach my boys U9 team and for "homework" I asked them to watch the game and answer 4 questions.  To my horror, the game didn't start until 9pm CST because of a half hour pregame.  I'm pretty certain all my boys were in bed by 9:30, even if it is spring break.  IDK, I guess its my fault, I knew the game was on at 8:30 but throw me a bone here, I'm trying to boost ratings here!

The game was very poor aesthetically.  And then we get called snobs...The difference in quality is plain to see.  I am going to do my best to support MLS though.  Its the Major League that we have, so I'll have to watch as it goes through its growing pains.

RR, I also grew up outside of Portland (Lake Oswego) and my first pro game was at the Timbers in the 70's (remember the giant janzen swimwear model on the outfield wall?). Have never been able to warm up to the Galaxy or Chivas, but will root for Portland. Haven't been to the Home Depot Center in a couple of years, but am planning on it and especially looking forward to DC United and (fingers crossed) a healthy Charlie Davies coming to town.

Nice to hear Joe. We lived there at the same time. I lived in Lake Grove for a bit but the rest of the time I lived in Beaverton.

I do remember the Janzen model. Small world. We used to go to the lake as a wee lad to watch the fireworks in Lake Oswego when I was very young. Lake Oswego was always a nice place.

Forgot to throw in my appreciation for the Timbers vid. to our favorite person from Cleveland, thanks Mo. Went on the Timbers site and can't believe what they have done to the Civic Stadium of my youth. To say it was rickety and relic from the 20's (when it was built) is an understatement. The new Jeld Wen Field is beautiful and with one side below street level, the huge building (was the Portland Athletic Club, assume it still is) towering over one end, and the rest of the seats covered by the overhang and that place will feel subterranean to opposing teams and be incredibly loud for 20K. My mom lives in central Oregon and might have to make the drive over to Portland to catch a game this summer.

I will keep working on you.  Here's a start.  How can you not be crushed by what has happened to Stuart Holden.  The guy is the biggest sweet heart in the world.  He recieved the humanitarian of the year award (dont remember from who) for his charity work.  First hand, he came to my step neice's hospital room in Houston when she was battling luekemia.  Anyway, every time things start breaking for him, somone injures him.  At 17 he was on trial with Sunderland and some thug beat him up on the street and totally derailed his trial.  Then Bolton signs him, he plays a few games well and DeJong breaks his leg.  He only gets 4 minutes in the world cup.  Now he has finally had his break out season with Bolton.  He leads the prem in tackles (havent checked that for a while but he had a substantial lead) and a red card tackle puts him out for 6 months.  He will now miss the Gold Cup at a time when he warranted a starting spot for the US.  He still has the decency to tweet to the world that the offender apologised to him and he's sure no malice was intended.  Stuart is a first class player and individual and he plays for the red, white and blue.

After all my bitching and moaning about TV coverage, I come to find that with direct TV I could've watched every MLS game this week.  They were shown in the 400's where all the Europa games are broadcast.  No it's not ESPN, that channel that will make the difference in growing the sports popularity in the US, but at least there is hope I can watch MLS as I please,  And I will.

I will be paying attention to the three pacific northwest teams since they all have young Akron players - Zakuani (Seattle), Nagbe (Portland), Nanchoff (Vancouver).  My fav team is the Dynamos!!   Home of Ching, Holden, and now Sarkodie (another Akron alum).  We're going to see Columbus play Vancouver next month.  My son now plays for the academy that produced Nagbe and Nanchoff so lots of the families with kids in the academy are going together to the match.   Looking forward to it.  My sons new team is the only USSF development academy in Cleveland.  So far it has helped his game tremendously so I am very thankful to them.  The really neat thing for me personally is that the USSF Development Academy communications people send me emails every week about academy news regarding teams and players across the nation.  As long as my son stays on the team I will be in the know about the up coming US talent pool.  Maybe Fulham has some role for me after all.

It is a sad story because he was playing well at Bolton. Didn't know about his charity work, nice to hear he helps out outside the pitch as well.

Holden is a real talent. perhaps someday the FA will do something about thugs. I won't hold my breath.

We had the unforunate loss of Davis just prior to the WC and now Stu.

But to put a positive slant on it
Charlie Davies got a brace

I stayed up and watched Seattle vs LA, That pitch was terrible, I wouldn't like to play on that in the 1st match of the season, they all looked knackered after 60 mins and the ball looked like the one they used in the World Cup. nice goal from LA though.

also watched LA vs New England. better game to watch,  how many goals were chalked off for LA...

I'll watch another this weekend, see how long i CAN LAST

Here is one reason not to like US soccer.  :tom:

I realize this is not USNMT but this has been tried before with track stars in the NFL, they rarely do well and there is so much understanding needed in soccer I have serious doubts that whatever athleticism he still possesses can translate.

I understand the skepticism, but he's giving soccer it's due respect.  He says the beautiful game was his first love and he wishes he's stayed with it over football.  After the trial he apparently commented how hard it was and that soccer isnt just about being fast and running around, it is an art.  I dont think there is any danger of him making a mockery of MLS.  Instead, he is making people at least take a look at MLS.  I'm for it.  MLS needs publicity and I dont think it will turn into a circus.  We'll see though.  I predict he'll go the way of Michael Jordan playing baseball.  You'll see the athleticism and cometitiveness, but he'll never be comfortable dealing with the level of play.

Thanks for the link Mo. I would have never unearthed that story. Day by day, I learn a little bit more so thanks.

Timbers got crushed 3-1 by Colorado in their first game. Looks to be a long season. I found out from my brother the stadium that has been there forever and has seen a facelift is now soccer only and the AAA baseball that used to call it their home has moved entirely out of the state. Ridge, not a lot of shame for an expansion team to lose to the reigning champions.  I only remember seeing them play in the MLS Cup, but I recall them being very physical, wasnt fun to watch.  I'm sure Portland doesnt want to play that way.  Also, keep the faith because my darling (Darlington Nagbe) hasnt appeared for the Timbers yet.  I want to see them play Vancouver with Nagbe in the mix.  Nagbe made it very clear he didnt want to play for a Canadian team (I have no idea why) otherwise Vancouver likely would've drafted him over Salgado.

Wow, booting a baseball team out for soccer!!  AAA no less.

Portland is taking this franchise seriously.

RR, If you go to the Timbers website you can check out the new digs. Except for the Athletic Club, you wouldn't know that was Civic Stadium.

Pretty dang impressive. Looks nothing like what I remember as a child except for the MAC. Wow. This franchise is going to be winner I think. They always did well in the NASL no reason to believe with the support, this stadium, no other sports except the Trailblazers, and Portland's penchant for being different they won't be winners soon. I'm actually very excited.

Fox Soccer Channel is showing Houston v. Seattle tonight at 9:30 ET.  Will compete with the NCAA tourney, but I plan to switch back and forth. Interesting development with Houston after their opening loss to Philly.  They traded Dominic Oduro to Chicago because he missed a sitter that would have tied the match in the final minutes.  They said they wanted to send a message to the players.  And apparently Dominic Kinnear (my favorite manager in MLS) layed into the players in ways that cant be repeated in polite company.  Now that's some good sports drama for you.  Hoping I get to see two Akron alums in this match - Kofi Sarkodie for Houston and Steve Zakuani for Seattle.  BTW the former was an A student majoring in microbiology while at Akron.  Just trying to keep ya'll interested in MLS.  I think it's finally caught on for me.

What I saw of the Houston Seattle game was pretty entertaining.  It was so fast in the rain on turf.  Funny they let them have a turf field because when Cleveland was being considered more seriously for MLS expansion they were told no turf.  But Cleveland isnt Seattle is it?  Enough of my sour grapes. Zakuani scored.  Nothing amazing but he really looks a level above everyone else, even Seattle's DP.  Cant be long before he is in Europe somewhere.  For those who have Direct TV, I believe all the days MLS matches are being televised in the  400 channels.

Thanks for the heads up on the channels. I hope they keep them there all season. I'm just wondering why do turf at all considering it is basically a spring/summer league?

I watched Crew DC match last week and by the end of it was anxious for the college season to start so I could watch Akron.  How freakin sad is THAT!

You can watch all the MLS games on Direct TV for a $80/season.  Four $20 payments.  I'm considering it.

Petty, while I'm a full fledged Akron supporter, their important players will be changing every year or two so it's hard for me to look forward to the season - I only know a few players that will start.  This years recruiting classs supposed  to be the best ever though.

Robbie Earle has been found. He is the analyst on Timbers broadcasts.
