Title: Thursday Fulham Stuff (20/10/11)...
Post by: WhiteJC on October 20, 2011, 07:29:27 AM

Joy on the Road?

After the disappointment of the Britannia Stadium, last Saturday, Fulham have a chance to get back to winning ways this Thursday evening.

We resume our Europa League campaign with a fixture, in Poland, against Wisla Krakow.

Now I don`t imagine for a minute that we`ll be taking anything more than a couple of hundred supporters but Pajtim Kasami reckons those few hardy souls could be in for a treat.

Our young midfielder has pointed out that one more good performance, like the 2-0 win we carved out in Odense last time out, could put us well and truly in the mix to qualify from Group K, with Kasami commenting,

"Normally home form is probably what will decide if we progress, but maybe this time we have a chance to go on by doing it by doing well away."

"We can really get into a strong position if we play our normal game with a bit more confidence in front of goal."

Decent enough words but remember who takes the penalties Pajtim!

Fulham trio to miss Europa League game

Fulham skipper Danny Murphy has been ruled out of Thursday's Europa League match against Wisla Krakow, while Bobby Zamora and Clint Dempsey will be rested.

Murphy, who went off during the second half of the weekend defeat at Stoke, is nursing a knee injury and Fulham are hoping he will recover in time for Sunday's visit of Everton.

And boss Martin Jol has opted not to select Zamora or Dempsey in Poland. Andrew Johnson, who scored twice against Odense, is again set to lead the Whites attack.

Zamora recently returned to action after an ankle problem, while United States star Dempsey has been heavily involved for both club and country of late.

Youngsters Kerim Frei and Alex Smith have been included in the squad and could feature.

Fulham sit second in Group K, level on four points with leaders FC Twente after a draw with the Dutch side and a victory over Odense. Wisla are bottom of the group and yet to register a point.

Opta Stats: Fulham v Everton

There are few fixtures in the Premier League calendar that produce home wins as regularly as this one. Will the Cottagers keep that Opta trend alive?

Fulham and Everton have met 20 times in the Premier League and 18 of those matches have ended as home wins, though the one draw and one away win both came at Craven Cottage.

The last three victories in this fixture have all been by a 2-1 scoreline.

Louis Saha has scored five goals in 10 Premier League games against his former club.

Fulham have won just one of their last nine Premier League matches (W1 D5 L3).

The Londoners have lost just one of their last 13 matches at Craven Cottage in the Premier League (W7 D5 L1).

Everton have lost their last three Premier League games, but haven't suffered four defeats on the bounce since December 2005.

Fulham's Danny Murphy has created more scoring chances for team-mates than any other player in the Premier League (25).

Tim Howard has saved four and conceded only two goals from the last seven penalties he has faced in the Premier League.

Everton have only scored three goals in their last six Premier League away matches, alternating between not scoring and netting one goal.

The Toffees have won none of their last nine Premier League trips to play London sides (D6 L3).

Wisla Krakow v Fulham: Cottagers can triumph in Poland

Michael Lintorn expects Fulham to edge closer to a place in the knockout rounds with victory away to Wisla Krakow on Thursday teatime...

Wisla Krakow v Fulham, Thursday 18:00 BST, ITV4, Match odds: Wisla Krakow 3.75, Fulham 2.24, The Draw 3.4

Whereas Fulham's Premier League record of seven points from eight games is rather poor, they have been very impressive in Europe, with the fact that they have already played nine times in the Europa League no doubt a factor in their slow domestic start.

The Cottagers have won five and drawn three of their encounters to date as they bid to repeat their heroic run to the final two years ago, and they have triumphed twice on their travels, including in their last Group K clash in Odense.

Those results leave them joint-top with Dutch side Twente, whereas latest opponents Wisla Krakow are bottom without a point having most disappointingly been beaten in Poland by unfancied Odense.

Wisla have been victorious in only two of their last seven as hosts in this competition, losing four of those, with Premier League clubs Blackburn and Tottenham among those that they have dropped points to, so a back of the visitors at 2.24 appeals.

Over/under 2.5 goals

Martin Jol's men have scored just three times in their last eight away matches - though admittedly two of those did come in their last continental tie in Denmark - however they have been strong defensively over that period, conceding seven and keeping four clean sheets.

Those two trends point to both a flutter on under 2.5 goals at 1.81 and also the Fulham clean sheet at a chunkier price of 2.8 as wise investments.

Admittedly, attack has been one area that Wisla have delivered in Europe this season, but they have been shut out three times in seven Ekstraklasa fixtures, so don't read too much into their two Europa League strikes. Fulham are 3.7 to win to nil.

Best Bet: Fulham to win @ 2.24
Other Recommended Bet: Under 2.5 goals @ 1.81

Jol remains confident
Fulham boss has an eye on Sunday's Premier League game

Martin Jol expects his Fulham side to claim a positive result against Wisla Krakow despite the absence of several key players.

Jol has opted to leave Danny Murphy, Bobby Zamora and Clint Dempsey in London for the trip to Poland, as he has an eye on their Premier League game against Everton on Sunday.

Dempsey and Zamora are being rested, while their captain Murphy misses the game with a knee injury.

Following the omission of the trio, Jol will be hoping that several fringe players take the opportunity to step into the breach their vacancies have created.

"Danny took a knock to his knee, which was pretty painful but hopefully he will be fit for selection on Sunday," he said.

Risk

"I spoke to the medical staff and we decided not to take a risk. Dempsey was left in London and Bobby was the same as I want him for Sunday, rather than risking him tomorrow because we have Andrew Johnson.
"[Mousa] Dembele is with us even though he had a little problem with his ankle and we have Orlando Sa, who can also play in attack."

He added: "We took a few younger players instead [rather than risking them] like Kerim Frei, Alex Smith and Marcel Gecov.

"That said, I do not have any concerns before the match. We have played with different teams before and have 22 good players, as well as a few younger players.

"Overall, we still have a very good team."

Ready to Challenge
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Players/Etuhu/Laughing1.jpg)

Dickson Etuhu is relishing the challenge of taking on Wisla Krakow in Poland on Thursday night. The midfielder spoke to the press on Wednesday night in Krakow alongside Manager Martin Jol.

As the evening temperatures plummeted in Poland on Wednesday evening, Fulham's players took to the pitch at Wisla Krakow's stadium for an evening training session ahead of Thursday night's UEFA Europa League match.

One player who is hoping to test his mettle against Wisla Krakow is Dickson Etuhu and the midfielder believes Fulham can enjoy another memorable European night on foreign soil against tough opposition.

"If I'm selected, I'll be really excited about playing on Thursday night," said Etuhu on Wednesday evening.

"Obviously we're expecting a tough game against Wisla Krakow tomorrow night. We know that and every time you play in Europe, away from home, you can expect a difficult match.

"I've heard a lot about Wisla Krakow and how tough it is to play at their stadium. The atmosphere is meant to be amazing so we're all looking forward to the match."

Etuhu highlighted the quality within Martin Jol's squad as he looks to cement his place in central midfield and with captain Danny Murphy sidelined due to injury, Etuhu could partner Steve Sidwell in Fulham's engine room.

"We've got a good squad and the Manager's added strength to the squad," Etuhu explained when discussing the strong competition for places. "It's a long season and everyone is getting a game here and there. We're all excited about the future."

Krakow won't change approach
Wisla Krakow manager Robert Maaskant is hoping to outsmart countryman Martin Jol and his Fulham side in Thursday's Europa League tie.

Krakow: Welcomes Fulham on Thursday

The White Star have performed miserably in their two Group K matches so far, conceding seven goals in two defeats.

Despite having suffered heavy losses to both Odense BK and FC Twente, Maaskant thinks the Polish champions can turn the corner on Thursday against Jol's side.

"The plan is, like always, to score one more goal than they do," said the Dutchman. "That is plan one.

"Of course, we know Fulham are a very good side.

"It has not been very easy to analyse Fulham because they have been changing their line-up many times over the last eight games.

"There are always five players that start but other than that we don't know, for example tomorrow with [Mousa] Dembele because he had a little injury against Stoke.

"So we are not sure how they are going to play but we have to have our own plan.

"We are not going to change that much because it is not possible to change a whole system or to play totally different.

"Of course we are aware that the result tomorrow is going to be very important for the rest of the games.

"We hope are smart enough to get a result against maybe a stronger team."

Murphy, Dempsey and Zamora absent as Fulham head to Wisla looking for back to back wins

Fulham go looking for back-to-back Europa League group wins at Wisla Krakow, but will do so without three key players.

Skipper Danny Murphy has missed the trip to Poland with a knee injury, and forwards Bobby Zamora and Clint Dempsey are rested.

Switzerland centre back Philippe Senderos (thigh) is also missing, leading manager Martin Jol to draft in youngsters Kerim Frei and Alex Smith.

Having beaten Odense in their last match, victory in Poland would leave Fulham in a great position to qualify.

BOBBY ZAMORA OUT OF KRAK ATTACK

MARTIN JOL risked another row with Bobby Zamora last night by leaving the Fulham striker at home.

The Cottagers face Wisla Krakow tonight in a Europa League clash looking to defend their unbeaten record in Group K.

But boss Jol decided to rest both Zamora and Clint Dempsey with one eye on Sunday's visit of Everton in the Premier League.

Jol left Zamora out against Odense in September because the striker was ill and had to admit the pair fell out over it.

Jol, who is also without midfielder Danny Murphy due to a knee injury, said: "It's not too complicated to leave players at home. We did it before. I don't think it's an issue if you're happy or not happy. Hopefully they wanted to play.

"It's always a good attitude to have. But after talking to the players I don't think it was a problem. They understood.

"You talk with your medical staff and take a decision. I wanted Bobby fit for Sunday instead of risking him in this game.

"It's not a real worry to be without them. Clint is a goalscorer and Bobby is our main striker. But overall we've still got a strong team."

The loss of captain Murphy is also a blow – and Jol admitted he had not yet decided who will lead the side against Wisla.

This is already the 20th competitive match of what could be an epic season for Fulham, who had to play four ties just to get this far in Europe.

Midfielder Dickson Etuhu said: "It's not a problem. It's a big squad. The manager's done well rotating. We're all getting a game. It's exciting."

Fulham: Schwarzer; Kelly, Hangeland, Hughes, Briggs; Pasami, Etuhu, Sidwell, Duff; Johnson, Dembele.

Wisla: Pareiko; Lamey, Jaliens, Chavez, Paljic; Wilk, Diaz; Iliev, Garguta, Kirm; Biton.

Referee: Martin Hansson (Sweden).

Fulham Eye German Winger Maximilian Biester

English Premier League outfit Fulham are making eyes at Germany Under-21 winger Maximilian Biester.

The 21-year-old currently turns out for Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan from Bundesliga side Hamburg and has come to the attention of Cottagers boss Martin Jol.

Sources in Germany have indicated that Fulham may make an offer for Biester in the January transfer window.

Whether Hamburg would be open to selling the German remains to be seen, but the chance to move to the Premier League could be too good for the starlet to refuse.

Biester is a product of Hamburg's youth system and made his senior debut for the northern German side in 2009.

Jol upbeat despite absentees

Fulham manager Martin Jol is upbeat about his side's chances against Wisla Krakow despite being without a handful of key players for the Europa League tie.

The Cottagers face the Polish champions without captain Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Bobby Zamora.

The latter pair have been rested ahead of Fulham's Premier League match against Everton, while Murphy misses out with a knee injury, but Jol remains confident of victory at the Stadion Miejski and backed his squad players to rise to the occasion.

"Danny took a knock to his knee, which was pretty painful but hopefully he will be fit for selection on Sunday," the Dutchman said.

"I spoke to the medical staff and we decided not to take a risk.

"Dempsey was left in London and Bobby was the same as I want him for Sunday rather than risking him tomorrow because we have got Andrew Johnson.

"[Mousa] Dembele is with us even though he had a little problem with his ankle and we have Orlando Sa, who can also play in attack.

"That said, I do not have any concerns before the match. We have played with different teams before and have 22 good players, as well as a few younger players.

"Overall, we still have a very strong team."

Wisla manager Robert Maaskant is hoping to outsmart countryman Jol and overcome a poor start in Group K, which has seen the White Star lose both its matches and concede seven goals.

Despite having suffered heavy losses to both Odense BK and FC Twente, Maaskant thinks they can turn the corner tomorrow.

"The plan is, like always, to score one more goal than they do," said the Dutchman. "That is plan one.

"Of course, we know Fulham are a very good side.

"It has not been very easy to analyse Fulham because they have been changing their line-up many times over the last eight games.

"There are always five players that start but other than that we don't know, for example tomorrow with Dembele because he had a little injury against Stoke.

Fulham boss defends Zamora absence

MARTIN Jol has defended his decision to leave out Bobby Zamora for tonight's Europa League trip to Wisla Krakow.

The Fulham frontman has not travelled to Poland for the Group K clash, with Clint Dempsey also rested.

Zamora was reportedly furious at being left out for the win in Odense last month, but boss Jol played down his star man's absence.

He said: "Bobby is our main striker, our target man and a very important player for us.

"We didn't want to risk him because we want him to be fit for Sunday's game against Everton.

"We've got Andrew Johnson, Moussa Dembele and Orlando Sa with us and they've done well this season."

Jol will also be without injured skipper Danny Murphy, but Marcel Gecov, Alex Smith and Kerim Frei have been added to the squad.

Courtois expects more loans
Chelsea keeper not anticipating quick Stamford Bridge return

Thibaut Courtois: Expecting more loan spells after joining Atletico Madrid from Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois has revealed that Chelsea have told him he could spend at least three years out on loan before returning to challenge for the No.1 jersey at Stamford Bridge.

The 19-year-old Belgium goalkeeper is enjoying his first few weeks with Atletico Madrid and thinks that he may spend at least two seasons in Spain before joining another English team.

Chelsea signed Courtois from Racing Genk in the summer but immediately loaned him to Atleti on a one-year deal that the custodian already believes will be extended.

"Chelsea told me that I would spend two years in a team like Atletico," he told radio station Onda Cero.

"At the moment is only one yaer, but if they want me for a second Chelsea are fine with that. It is possible."

English option

Courtois also revealed that he could spend time on loan at another Premier League club, naming Fulham and Tottenham as possible options.

"After that I would then spend one more season with an English club, like Fulham or Tottenham, to allow me to adapt to the English league.

"Then in the fourth season everything would be normal at Chelsea."

Courtois may return sooner than that if the Chelsea coaching staff's fears over current Blues keeper Petr Cech's long-term fitness come true.

"He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world," the young stopper continued. "But he has problems with his knees and with his back.

"The Chelsea goalkeeping coach (Christophe Lollichon) said to me that he does not know how long he can contninue to play at the highest level."

No fears

Atletico were keen to sign Courtois in the summer after selling David De Gea to Manchester United, with Los Colchoneros keen to buy him from Racing Genk before he moved to the Blues.

"Before Chelsea bought me Atletico wanted me too," he explained. "I like it here a lot.

"I know that David De Gea is a very good goalkeeper and it is difficult to start off here because the pressure from the fans as they are used to having a great keeper.

"But I did not have any fears. I just play my game. Now I am here I just want to help the team finish in the top four."

Europa Team News
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Management/Jol/EuropaConf1.jpg)

Martin Jol revealed the latest team news ahead of Thursday night's UEFA Europa League match against Wisla Krakow in Poland during Wednesday night's pre-match press conference.

Fulham will be without three senior players on Thursday night, including skipper Danny Murphy, but Manager Martin Jol is confident Fulham have the strength in depth to fire Fulham to victory against Wisla Krakow in Poland.

"Danny Murphy's injured so he's stayed in London," Jol explained. "He got a painful knock on his knee but hopefully he will be fit for selection on Sunday. We didn't want to take a risk with Danny.

"We also made the decision to rest Clint Dempsey and Bobby Zamora and we've brought a few younger players along with us. For example, Kerim Frei, Alex Smith and Marcel Gecov have joined us here in Poland.

"Bobby is our main striker, our target man and a very important player for us and we didn't want to risk him because we want him fit for Sunday's game against Everton.

"Clint has played a lot of games recently including international matches with the USA. I thought it was a good idea to rest him.

"We've got Andrew Johnson, Mousa Dembele and Orlando Sa with us and they've done well this season. Andrew Johnson scored six goals in Europe and a hat-trick against QPR recently so he's on fire.

"Everyone apart from Murphy, Dempsey and Zamora is with us. Overall we still have a very strong team that can hopefully win us the match."

Jol heaps praise on Maaskant
Cottagers boss looking forward to meeting with fellow Dutch coach

Fulham boss Martin Jol is relishing facing fellow Dutchman Robert Maaskant when his side take on Wisla Krakow in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

The pair having come across one another before during their time coaching in the Eredivisie, which included a 6-0 win for Jol's Ajaxside against Maaskant's NAC Breda during the 2009/10 season.

The most recent clash between the duo ended 1-1 in January 2010, and Jol was quick to praise his counterpart ahead of this evening's match.

Challenge

"I think Wisla is a good challenge for him," Jol said. "It is good for his experience because he is still a young coach [42], although he started when he was 26.

"He is one of the youngest coaches and a big prospect.

"He was champion last year so he is a very good manager.

"He was very young when he started coaching, probably the youngest ever in Dutch football.

"Even then he was pretty successful. They called him the crown prince of Dutch football.

"He is a very intelligent and talented guy."

Maaskant was pleased to see Jol at Wednesday night's pre-match press conference, but will be hoping to outsmart his countryman tonight.

Changes

"Of course, we know Fulham are a very good side," said Maaskant, whose side have lost their first two Group K matches.

"It has not been very easy to analyse Fulham because they have been changing the line-up many times over the last eight games.

"There are always five players that start but other than that we don't know - for example with [Mousa] Dembele because he had a little injury against Stoke.

"So we are not sure how they are going to play but we have to have our own plan."

Fulham boss Jol praises the 'crown prince of Dutch football'

Whites manager keen to take on his fellow Dutchman

Martin Jol can't wait for Fulham's Europa League clash at Wisla Krakow and the opportunity to pit his wits against fellow Dutchman Robert Maaskant.

His countryman was in charge of NAC Breda while Jol managed Ajax in 2009 where the Whites boss saw the Amsterdam side side romp to a 6-0 triumph.

"I think Wisla is a good challenge for him," Jol said.

"It is good for his experience because he is still a young coach, although he started when he was 26. He is one of the youngest coaches and a big prospect.

"He was champion last year so he is a very good manager.Even then he was pretty successful. They called him the crown prince of Dutch football.

"He is a very intelligent and talented guy."

Fulham are currently second in Group K with four points from two matches, while tonight's opponents prop up the table and have yet to pick up a point.

Wisla boss admits Fulham are the 'stronger team'

Robert Maaskant is hopeful his side can use their intelligence to beat the Whites

Wisla Krakow boss Robert Maaskant acknowledges that Fulham have perhaps the better side, but is hopeful his team's intelligence will lead to victory in tonight's Europa League clash.

The Poles are currently bottom of Group K after losing their first two matches and the Dutchman is under no illusions about the importance of the match against the Whites.

"Of course we are aware that the result tnight is going to be very important for the rest of the games," he said.

"We hope we are smart enough to get a result against maybe a stronger team."

"Of course, we know Fulham are a very good side."

Jol has often used the competition as an opportunity to play some of his fringe players, a tactic which has confused Maaskant.

"There are always five players that start but other than that we don't know - for example with Mousa Dembele because he had a little injury against Stoke," he said.

"So we are not sure how they are going to play but we have to have our own plan.

"We are not going to change that much because it is not that possible to change a whole system or play totally different."

Today's Press Kit

Is here.

As the Guildford-based band Bennett sang in the 90s, Someone Always Gets there First.

In this case it was Spurs, who won their tie 3-2 on aggregate. Also Blackburn Rovers in 2006, a 2-1 win for Rovers in Poland.

Wisla are European regulars, too.  Which might count for something.  Also, David Biton seems to be the man to watch – regular goalscoring form this year.

Fulham boss Jol confident despite losing key stars

FULHAM manager Martin Jol is upbeat about his side's chances against Wisla Krakow tonight despite being without a handful of key players for the Europa League tie.

The Cottagers face the Polish champions without some key players, including Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Bobby Zamora.

The latter pair have been rested ahead of Sunday's Premier League match against Everton, while skipper Murphy misses out with a knee injury.

Despite the big-name absentees, Jol remains confident of victory at the Stadion Miejski and backed his squad players to rise to the occasion.

"Danny took a knock to his knee, which was pretty painful but hopefully he will be fit for selection on Sunday," the Dutchman said.

"I spoke to the medical staff and we decided not to take a risk.

"Dempsey was left in London and Bobby was the same as I want him for Sunday rather than risking him because we have got Andrew Johnson.

"Mousa Dembele is with us even though he had a little problem with his ankle and we have Orlando Sa, who can also play in attack.

"We took a few younger players instead rather than risking them like Kerim Frei, Alex Smith and Marcel Gecov.

"That said, I do not have any concerns before the match.

"We have played with different teams before and have 22 good players, as well as a few younger players.

"Overall, we still have a very strong team."

Fulham remain undefeated in Group K but progression for Wisla already looks unlikely, having lost their opening two matches and conceded seven goals in the process.

Wisla's defeats have seen fans and pundits alike turn on a supposedly slow and disorganised defence, which Jol believes makes this the kind of game in which a player of Johnson's pace could flourish.

"If he starts I think he can do well," he said.

Fulham midfielder Pajtim Kasami hoping to receive first-team opportunities in the Europa League
Swiss youngster hoping to get off the mark in Europe in order to stake a claim for a more regular place in Martin Jol's side and hopes for a positive result against Wisla Krakow

Fulham midfielder Pajtim Kasami hopes to be given the chance to make an impression on Martin Jol by being handed a Europa League start against Polish side Wisla Krakow.

The combined pressures placed on the Cottagers' squad by the Premier League and European and cup competitions could see the 19-year old Swiss star given a first team opportunity, one he hopes might kick-start his Craven Cottage career.

"These games maybe give me more chances to play and gives me a chance to get a goal which will help me get my Fulham career going," Kasami told The Times.

Fulham take on Wisla in Poland after winning their last Europa League match away from home against OB Odense, and Kasami acknowledged the potential importance of a strong away record in the group stage.

The former Palermo man added that more ruthlessness in attack was required after their 2-0 defeat against Stoke City in the Premier League at the weekend.

"Normally, home form is probably what will decide if we progress, but maybe this time we have a chance to go on by doing well away," he said.
"We can get into a really strong position after these two away games if we play our normal game and we can show more confidence in front of goal."

Kasami desperate to break duck
Teenager focused on ending barren run against Wisla Krakow

Midfielder Pajtim Kasami is hoping to kick-start his Fulham career by scoring his first goal for the club in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night.

The 19-year-old has failed to find the net in 10 appearances since arriving at Craven Cottage from Swiss club Grasshopper for a reported £3.5million in the summer.

Kasami is desperate to break that barren streak when Fulhamtravel to Wisla Krakow.
"These games maybe give me more chances to play and a chance to get a goal which will help me get my Fulham career going," he told the Daily Mirror.

"I hope that once I score, it will get better for me and help me reach my right level.

"The Premier League is very important, but for me the Europa League is equally so because you always get more experience playing in Europe and it's always exciting to play."

Momentum

Kasami hopes the Cottagers can maintain their momentum away from home after beating Odense in Denmark last time out.

"Normally, home form will probably decide if we progress," he added. "But maybe this time we have a chance to go on by doing well away.

"We can get into a really strong position after these two away games."

Fulham boss Jol risks row leaving Zamora in London

Fulham boss Martin Jol has risked a blow-up with Bobby Zamora after leaving him behind for their Europa League clash at Wisla Krakow.

The England ace clashed with Jol two weeks ago when he was left out of the last Europa League match in Denmark against Odense amid claims of illness.

Instead of making the trip to Krakow, Zamora is back in London along with midfielder Clint Dempsey, even though Fulham have been rocked by an injury to skipper Danny Murphy.

Jol said: "It is a good attitude if they want to play in all the games but I don't think there is any issue.

"Danny Murphy is injured, so he stayed in London and we decided to rest Zamora and Dempsey.

"Murphy picked up a knee injury, it was very painful and we decided not to take a risk."

Sharpy's Scouting Report: Fulham

Everton travel to Craven Cottage on Sunday looking to secure a key Premier League win against Martin Jol's Fulham.

The two clubs have both picked up seven points so far this season, although the Blues have played a game less.

As ever Blues legend Graeme Sharp has cast his eye over Fulham in Sharpy's Scouting Report and has identified Cottagers forward Bobby Zamora as the key man.

He said: "If Bobby Zamora is firing and up for it then he is a real handful.

"As a front player he has everything, he's got good control he's good in the air and he can hold the ball up and bring other players in to play

"If he plays he will be one of Fulham's main threats."

Kasami targets Europa goals

Fulham midfielder Pajtim Kasami hopes to break his goal-scoring deadlock against Wisla Krakow in the Europa League on Thursday.

Zamora rested as Jol puts survival first

Martin Jol confirmed his priority lies in Premier League survival rather than achieving European glory by revealing why he had left out Bobby Zamora from tonight's Europa League group game at Wisla Krakow in Poland.

Fulham's position in Group K - they are second behind FC Twente following a win and a draw - is a lot more healthy than their position in the Premier League, where defeat at home against Everton on Sunday could see Jol's players plunge into the relegation zone.

Risking the wrath of Zamora, who was reported to have been unhappy at being left out of the Europa squad that travelled to Odense in Denmark last month, Jol said: "Bobby is our main striker, our target man and a very important player. We didn't want to risk him because we want him fit for the Everton game.

"We've got Andrew Johnson, Mousa Dembele and Orlando Sa with us and they've done well this season. Andrew has already scored six goals in Europe and got a hat-trick against QPR, so he's on fire."

Clint Dempsey has also been rested, while skipper Danny Murphy is out with a knee injury sustained in the 2-0 defeat at Stoke last weekend.

But their absence, combined with that of Zamora, really ought not to be noticed against Krakow, who lie bottom of the group after two defeats from their two games and who have yet to record a win over an English side in three previous meetings with Tottenham [twice] and Blackburn Rovers.

Despite Wisla's poor form in Europe, Fulham's Dickson Etuhu is taking nothing for granted. He said: "I've heard a lot about Wisla and how tough it is to play at their stadium. The atmosphere is meant to be amazing."

Academy Report: Palace 2 Fulham 0

The academy came into the game unbeaten in their seven previous outings so confidence was high against a strong Fulham side sitting top of table. Palace broke the deadlock early on with Reise Allassani firing home from the corner of the box. The young striker who has just received an England under 16 call-up struck a superb half volley in to the top corner giving the keeper little chance.

The young Eagles continued to put pressure on Fulham's defence and were rewarded shortly after when Ghassimu Sow was brought down in the area. The penalty was awarded after some great work and a smart through ball from Vences Bola however the young strike was unable to put the spot kick away. Palace then absorbed some Fulham pressure but managed to go in at half team leading 1-0.

Gary Issott's side did not let the disappointment of a missed penalty phase them though and in the second half some brilliant skill from Kyle de Silva to win a corner resulted in Connor Dymond rising highest to head home. The second goal effectively killed the game off and Palace claimed an impressive victory with a strong performance which they will look to replicate away at Chelsea in two weeks time.

Academy Manager Gary Issott's comments:

"I was really pleased, on the day the lads did ever so well. The Fulham team had some strong foreign players and a few older ones being played down from their professional ranks so I think what our youngsters did on the day was absolutely terrific.

"We lost the first game at home to Sunderland but the lads have gone on and won four games and drawn three. Effectively we were unbeaten in seven games going into the Fulham game so since the start of the season the lads have been in terrific form.

"We were always hopeful with this group that there were going to be two or three future first team players in there and at the minute they're showing all the signs. The back four have kept a clean sheet for the second time in two weeks. Ross Fitzsimons (the keeper) deserves some credit for that with Ryan Inniss and Quade Taylor as well as Connor Dymond who did very well at right back. I think also Reise Allassani and Kyle de Silva were the pick of the front players.

"Regarding injuries, Tom King damaged some cartillage shortly after returning from injury so will be out for six weeks. Kyle de Silva recently returned from injury and Alex Wynter has started training and should be fit for the Chelsea game. Aaron Akuruka has also played a few minutes in friendlies so is also recovering well."

Jol unconcerned despite absence of his big three

FULHAM manager Martin Jol is confident about his side's chances against Wisla Krakow in tonight's Europa League clash, despite being without a handful of key players.

The Cottagers face the Polish champions without Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey and Bobby Zamora.

"We took a few younger players instead [rather than risking them] like Kerim Frei, Alex Smith and Marcel Gecov," said Jol, whose side have garnered four points from their opening two group games. "That said, I do not have any concerns before the match. We have 22 good players, as well as a few younger players. We have a strong team overall."

Martin Jol To Return To Hamburg For Talented Winger

Fulham have been in the news a lot lately and it looks like it could be a busy winter at Craven Cottage if all of the recent transfer rumours are true. The latest rumour surrounds the Hamburg wing-back Maximilian Beister who is currently on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf.

According to reports in the German Newspaper Bild, Fulham have been tracking Beister for some time now and his impressive performances for Düsseldorf this season have made an impression on Martin Jol, who managed Hamburg in 2008-09, and could be preparing a bid for Beister in January.

Düsseldorf play their football in the second division of the Bundesliga, but they are currently in third position just one point of the top of the table and they are unbeaten this season. Beister, 21, has played in all 11 games as a right winger and scored five goals, but he can play in a more defensive role if required.

Beister was on loan at Fortuna last season as well and has played 35 games in total scoring 11 goals. Should he continue to impress Fulham may well have a fight on their hands if they wish to bring him to England, as his parent club Hamburg are currently bottom of the Bundesliga with just seven points from their first nine games and they could exercise their right to recall him.

More waffle: some Julian Barnes but no Dickson Etuhu this time

Further to yesterday's waffle, here is some more waffle, building on the same thoughts. It occurred to me that I was unduly harsh on Julian Barnes. I think he's tarred by the Amis/McEwan brush, and while they write perfectly good books, they seem to be writing for and about other people.  A central tenet of fiction writing seems to be that your characters should be drawn in a way that makes readers take an interest in them, perhaps even want to be them.  It's why we read Kerouac when we're young and get all starry eyed, why Holden Caulfield resonates with teenagers so much, why Henry Miller can play weird tricks on our minds, why Hunter S Thompson is such a hero to so many.  You don't even have to admire these characters, but there has to be something about them that you identify with or tap into.

McEwan and Amis are gifted writers but their characters are a million miles away from anything I've come across or am interested in.  So while I appreciate that they write good books, they're not good books for me.  Which brings things like the Booker Prize into question: all of these are good books, but what makes one better than the other?  It depends on how you're judging them. This can't really be broken down (we've heard about the panel looking for 'page-turners' but this smells fishy) so leaves lots of room for interpretation and disagreement.

As we said yesterday, we get the same for footballers.  So a player might be a good player, but might not be a good player for all of us, owing to our own personal set of parameters.

If you are Martin Jol your criteria for each player might be:

Helps the team win football matches
Can be relied upon
Does what I tell him

And he'll have more specific things in mind for each position. Pick up any general coaching manual and you'll find a list of attributes for each role: coaches then adapt these to the systems and the players they have available.  So if the archetypal right-back should have good defensive qualities, pace, stamina, and the ability to join attacks, Jol has to decide which of these he prioritises most.  If he (or his system) needs pace he will look at someone like Chris Baird and have to make a decision about what he can accept and what he can't: Baird has little pace, but good distribution and is otherwise solid; Jol has to decide whether this is acceptable to him, and if it isn't, Baird doesn't get to play right-back.  And so on.

As fans we have other criteria. The commonly held stereotype of an English fan's ideals might be:

Runs around a lot/Gets 'stuck in'
Claps us afterwards
Does important things in high-profile situations
Avoids glaring mistakes

Another fan might look for:

Players who aren't afraid to try things
Players who take people on
Players who don't take things too seriously

Personally I like players who:

Other people don't seem to like as much
Have something to prove
Seem like nice people
Play in a pleasing manner

(So I'm a big Gecov fan at the moment)

Where is this all going? Just, I suppose, to reaffirm that we really all do look at the same thing in different ways.  This is obvious, of course, but we shouldn't be blind to these biases, either.   Which is an odd thing to say, except most of us spend far more time than is healthy discussing various footballers and a little pondering has helped me to understand why other people see things differently to me.  As individuals we're the product of a million influences that mean different things affect us in different ways: as best I can tell, women tend not to like Philip Roth's books; men can't understand why anyone would watch Sex and the City deliberately.  Both of these things have value, but different value to different people.  Same goes for football, I think.

Jol insists Fulham is still strong

Fulham manager Martin Jol is upbeat about his side's chances against Wisla Krakow on Thursday despite being without a handful of key players for the Europa League tie.

"Dempsey was left in London and Bobby was the same as I want him for Sunday rather than risking him tomorrow because we have got Andrew Johnson.

"[Mousa] Dembele is with us even though he had a little problem with his ankle and we have Orlando Sa, who can also play in attack.

"We took a few younger players instead [rather than risking them] like Kerim Frei, Alex Smith and Marcel Gecov.

The poor performances means little more than 15,000 are expected at tomorrow's match - less than half the capacity of the Stadion Miejski.

Wisla's defeats have seen fans and pundits alike turn on a supposedly slow and disorganised defence, which Jol believes makes this the kind of game in which a player of Johnson's pace could flourish.

"If he starts I think he can do well," he said. "He has scored I think six goals in Europe and then against QPR, where he scored a hat-trick.

"He is on fire and I think the only decision we have to make is whether we play him or somebody else."

Johnson started Saturday's Premier League clash at Stoke, where late goals from Jon Walters and Rory Delap condemned Fulham to a 2-0 defeat.

"Stoke was of course very disappointing because we were doing okay for 80 minutes and then their strength showed," Jol said.

"We were pretty disappointed after that but I don't think it has anything to do with this game.

"This game is important in another way, another perspective and we want to do well in the group. We want to do well in Europe.

"You cannot compare the two competitions but it is always good to have a win under your belt so I would say it is important for the confidence."

Fulham midfielder Dickson Etuhu echoed his manager's sentiments, adding: "Obviously we are expecting a tough game tomorrow.

"Every time you play in Europe, especially away from home, you expect a difficult game.

"I've heard a lot about this club and how tough it is to play at their ground, how amazing the atmosphere is.

"We're looking forward to it and it is an experience for all of us."

Wisla Krakow manager Robert Maaskant is hoping to outsmart countryman Jol.

The White Star have performed miserably in their two Group K matches so far, conceding seven goals in two defeats.

Despite having suffered heavy losses to both Odense BK and FC Twente, Maaskant thinks the Polish champions can turn the corner against Fulham.

WISLA KRAKOW v FULHAM
COTTAGERS CAN TRIUMPH IN POLAND

Michael Lintorn expects Fulham to edge closer to a place in the knockout rounds with victory away to Wisla Krakow on Thursday teatime...

Match odds:
Wisla Krakow 3.75, Fulham 2.24, The Draw 3.4

Best Bet:
Fulham to win @ 2.24

Other Recommended Bet:
Under 2.5 goals @ 1.81

Wisla Krakow V Fulham – Great 6/1 1st Goalscorer Bet Tonight

Fulham travel to Poland looking to continue their impressive run in this seasons Europa League, while the Poles will be looking for their first point of the group stages.

Wisla Krakow have only lost two of their last ten homes games in Europe, and they have won all of their last three games at home in all competitions. For a win tonight they are a best price of 11/4 (3.75) at VCBet and for the game to be drawn SkyBet offer another decent price of 5/2 (3.50).

Fulham may only be 14th in the Premier League, but in Europe they are a different outfit. They entered this seasons Europa League at the very first stage and they are the only team that is still standing from that first qualifying round. In their 10 Europa League fixtures they have lost just the once, and in their five away games they have a good looking record of W2, D2, L1.

For a Fulham win tonight 11/10 (2.10) is widely available, but at Sportingbet and Paddy Power 23/20 (2.15) is on offer.

Fulham striker Andrew Johnson is a man in form, scoring six in his last three games, and he has scored six times in nine Europa League games. He is 11/2 (6.50) in most places to score the first goal of the game tonight, but at Paddy Power 6/1 (7.0) is on offer. For him to find the net at anytime Paddy Power again offer the best price which is a good looking 2/1 (3.0).

Poland is never an easy place to visit, ask Barcelona they lost in the Champions League in 2008, but Blackburn Rovers won in 2006 and Tottenham Hotspur drew in 2008. Fulham will be looking to pick up at least a point tonight, if not all three and Andrew Johnson could be the man that helps them do just that.

HOME WIN AGAINST QPR EARNS FULHAM THE ACCOLADE

The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week, the F&C Thames River Performance of the Week Award should go to Fulham following their excellent 6-0 home win against QPR in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday 2nd October 2011.

Fulham manager Martin Jol will receive a specially engraved crystal football in a presentation to be screened on Sky Soccer Saturday on 15th October 2011.

Fulham recorded their first league victory of the 2010/11 campaign with a convincing win over their London rivals at Craven Cottage.

Andrew Johnson became the first Fulham player to score a hat-trick in the Barclays Premier League and he was quick to open the scoring after just after 78 seconds before Danny Murphy converted a penalty. Johnson then added two more goals either side of the interval, with Clint Dempsey and Bobby Zamora later completing the scoring for the hosts.

After the match, Jol was delighted with the result and hailed the performance of striker Johnson;

"I felt we played very well from the start. I'm very satisfied.

"We created a lot of chances and Andy Johnson put the ball into the back of the net.
"Remember that both Johnson and Zamora were both out injured, so it was nice to see them play together well.

"That is what Johnson is capable of and that's what I said at the start of the season. He's quick, he wants to work and he's a team player and now he proves that he can score goals as well and that is good."

Wisla Krakow v Fulham: Match preview

Wisla Krakow v Fulham;
Europa League;
Stadion Miejski;
Thurs, 20th Oct; 2005 KO

Team news

Bobby Zamora and Clint Dempsey have not travelled with the Fulham squad, while Danny Murphy took a knock to his knee and won't play. Moussa Dembele is set to feature, despite suffering from an ankle problem, while Philippe Senderos is out.

Wisla Krakow are without forward Patryk Maleki, who has suffered a broken shinbone. Dudu Biton and Ivica Iliev look likely to lead the side in the forward line after their successful partnership against FC Twente.

Kasami targets first Fulham strike

Pajtim Kasami is desperate to get on the scoresheet for Fulham tonight, with the midfielder hoping to score his first goal for the side as the Cottagers take on Polish outfit Wisla Krakow.

Kasami joined Fulham at the end of July for a reported fee of £3.5 million, but has struggled to find his feet in-front of goal.

But with Clint Dempsey and Bobby Zamora out of the squad tonight, the 19-year-old feels it's his chance to step up and be counted.

"These games maybe give me more chances to play and a chance to get a goal which will help me get my Fulham career going," he said.

"I hope that once I score, it will get better for me and help me reach my right level.

"The Premier League is very important, but for me the Europa League is equally so because you always get more experience playing in Europe and it's always exciting to play."

While Fulham will find the travelling fixture against Wisla tough, Kasami is aiming to keep the club's away momentum going strong as they aim to win their first European trophy.

"Normally, home form will probably decide if we progress," he explained. "But maybe this time we have a chance to go on by doing well away.

"We can get into a really strong position after these two away games."

Kasami Looking For Breakthrough!

One of our recent signings, and younger members of our squad, Pajtim Kasami, is hoping that the Stadion Miesjski, will be the stadium in which he`ll score his first goal for Fulham.

The young midfielder views that first senior goal as being the goal that will take his fledgling Fulham career to the next level with the Swiss international remarking,

"These games maybe give me more chances to play and a chance to get a goal which will help me get my Fulham career going."

"I hope that once I score, it will get better for me and help me reach the right level."

"The Premier League is very important, but for me the Europa League is equally so because you always get more experience playing in Europe and it`s exciting to play."

Now I wonder what the odds will be on Kasami getting the first goal!

Not Again?

Our Europa League campaign continues tonight, over in Poland, and once again Martin Jol has rotated his squad.

The tabloid press has been quick to comment on the fact that Bobby Zamora has been left behind again, whilst also mentioning that Clint Dempsey is another that hasn`t traveled.

Our plans have also been affected by the news that Danny Murphy isn`t in the party courtesy of an injury picked up at Stoke, on Saturday.

Returning to the press coverage though, Jol has offered a few comments that try to quell the apparent picture painted that suggests being left in London may well fabricate an air of discontent, with the boss commenting,

"It is a good attitude if they want to play in all these games but I don`t think there is any issue."

"Danny Murphy is injured, so he stayed in London and we decided to rest Zamora and Dempsey."

"Murphy picked up a knee injury, it was very painful, it was very painful and we decided not to take a risk."

Obviously, Martin has decided where his priorities lie and acted accordingly!

TRANSFER RUMOUR - STRIKER MOUNIR EL HAMDAOUI

Atletico Madrid have reportedly joined the race to sign Fulham target Mounir El Hamdaoui from Ajax in the January window.

Cottagers chief Martin Jol was heavily linked with a swoop for the Morocco international during the summer transfer window when it became clear he had little future under Frank De Boer at the Amsterdam Arena following Jol's departure at the turn of the year.

And, as Jol also managed El Hamdaoui during his stint in charge of Tottenham, it seems that he could try and take him to Craven Cottage to beef up his attacking options in the New Year.

Ajax reportedly wanted £8million for El Hamdaoui's signature in the summer, but could be ready to listen to offers of just £2.5million in January which would be much more appealing to Jol.

However, the chance to sign the 27-year-old on a cut-price deal has now alerted Atletico Madrid, who lost the likes of Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero in the summer transfer window.
