Johnson put Fulham 2-1 ahead by volleying in his first goal of the night

Two brilliant finishes from Andy Johnson helped Fulham defeat Wisla Krakow in the Europa League.

Damien Duff drove in Johnson's cross early on, but Andraz Kirm soon fired in a deflected equaliser.

Johnson made it 2-1 with a stunning volley and then scored with a lofted finish after Bobby Zamora's flick.

Steve Sidwell lashed in a late fourth as second-placed Fulham secured a win that puts them four points clear of Odense BK and Wisla in Group K.

Johnson showed exceptional technique for his opening goal as he finished first-time on the turn, while the Cottagers turned on the style with their first and third goals both coming from pretty and intelligent one-touch football, Zamora delivering neat touches in the build-up on each occasion.

The result allowed Fulham to gain revenge for their 1-0 defeat in October's reverse fixture, when they had Moussa Dembele controversially sent off.

It was an ambitious start from both sides and the first chance fell to Fulham as Duff forced an excellent save from Sergei Pareiko with a curling 15-yard effort.

But it did not take the winger long to get on the scoresheet, meeting Johnson's pull-back with a low first-time strike from just inside the 18-yard box.

Wisla quickly levelled after Dickson Etuhu gave possession away, allowing David Biton to surge forward and drill the ball into the Fulham penalty area.

The danger was not cleared and Lukasz Gargula knocked the ball back for Kirm to strike with the assistance of a deflection.

Fulham thought they had restored their lead almost straight away in a breathless first period when Pareiko parried a Duff shot, but Johnson was ruled offside as he knocked in the rebound.

However, Johnson was soon celebrating after he met Danny Murphy's delivery from the right with his superb finish from 15 yards.

FULHAM'S EUROPEAN FORTRESS
Fulham are unbeaten in 22 home European matches including 17 wins and 5 draws, stretching back to a 0-0 draw against FC Haka on 6 July 2002

Clint Dempsey nearly added a third just before half-time with a determined run and chip over Pareiko, only to see his effort hit the crossbar.

Wisla made a bright start to the second half and Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer was twice called into action, first saving Gervasio Nunez's deflected 20-yard effort and then smothering Gargula's free-kick.

But Fulham soon had the cushion of a third goal after more outstanding build-up play.

From a well-planned free-kick, Murphy played a diagonal pass to Zamora, close to the penalty spot, and he flicked the ball ahead for Johnson, who dinked it over Pareiko.

The scoring was completed when Sidwell met Duff's cross with a header from six yards out and, although his first effort came back off the bar, he lashed home the rebound.

Kew Jaliens saw a header rebound off a post for the visitors but they were out of the contest - and Pajtim Kasami almost made it 5-1 late on, but Pareiko kept out his close-range header.

Fulham manager Martin Jol: "The second goal was amazing and the third was a clever one. If you could come up with ideas like that every week, you would be like Real Madrid in the golden days.

"You could say we were very efficient because normally we create eight or nine chances and we score one goal and today we were different.

"Johnson for England? If you keep on scoring everyone says you should be in the England team but, for me, as a second striker he is one of the better ones."

Lawro's prediction
(http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/56449000/gif/_56449695_ful_tott_0506.gif)
Fulham v Tottenham
Fulham had a good win at Wigan last week and had a bit more of a goal threat away from home than usual.

This can be a funny fixture - there have been some mad results, with the Cottagers scoring four times in the first half in the FA Cup last season and Heurelho Gomes being badly at fault for a couple of goals in 2008 - but I'm still backing Tottenham to come out on top.

I've always said that they are the team most likely to finish fourth this season but they might be thinking they can finish third with the way they are playing at the moment.

As a five, the Spurs midfield and Rafael van der Vaart were absolutely brilliant against QPR on Sunday.

Scott Parker is their insurance policy, which is great for Luka Modric because he can just go and play. Then you have Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale with unbelievable pace down the wing and the cleverness of Van der Vaart.

Up front, Emmnauel Adebayor is still playing like he is in his honeymoon period, which has lasted a lot longer at Tottenham than it has done anywhere else. That says a lot about the way Harry Redknapp manages.

Tottenham have been to Russia and back in the build up for a Europa League tie in midweek but many of their first-choice players were left at home so it should not affect them too much.

Redknapp did not travel because of heart surgery but he hopes to be back in the dugout at Craven Cottage. Fingers crossed he will be all right and make a swift recovery.

Prediction: 1-2

Fulham 4 Wisla Krakow 1: Johnson double proves Cottagers are Poles apart

Andrew Johnson just can't stop scoring in the Europa League.

Two goals from the in-form striker put Fulham in the driving seat to qualify for the competition's knock-out stages.

Johnson took his European tally to eight to give Martin Jol's side revenge for their frustrating 1-0 defeat two weeks ago in Poland.

Brace yourself: Johnson scored two as Fulham cruised to victory over Wisla Krakow

Damien Duff put Fulham ahead before Wisla Krakow equalised through Andraz Krim, but Johnson's brace and a late goal from Steve Sidwell sealed a comfortable win.

Jol said: 'Johnson for England? If you keep on scoring everyone says you should be in the England team but, for me, as a second striker he is one of the best.

'We scored some great goals. If you could come up with ideas like that every week you would be like Real Madrid in the golden days.'

On a feisty evening at Craven Cottage, Krakow fans were ejected from the home sections and a smoke flare was let off in the historic Johnny Haynes Stand.

The firework s continued on the pitch, too, with Bobby Zamora clashing with Kew Jaliens late in the first half and Duff having a heated exchange with Gervasio Nunez, whose disgraceful play-acting earned Mousa Dembele a red card in Krakow.

Krakow boss Robert Maaskant then claimed his Fulham counterpart had overplayed his criticism of Nunez prior to the match, adding: 'Jol played the Nunez card quite well, which gave us a hostile atmosphere.

Stunner: Johnson slammed home this volley in the first-half

'It's always nice for a coach who worked with (Uruguay and Liverpool striker) Luis Suarez (at Ajax) for a year and a half to say something about another player like that.'

Jol fielded a strong side ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash against his old club, Tottenham Hotspur, and it paid off after just five minutes.

Duff started and finished the Fulham counter-attack; finding Zamora who fed Johnson on the right and then sprinting into the box to complete the move with a first-time left foot shot.

But Krakow capitalised when Dickson Etuhu lost the ball inside his own half four minutes later.

Captain Cezary Wilk ran into the box and found David Biton, who teed up Kirm to fire a deflected shot past Mark Schwarzer.

Johnson had a goal disallowed after 10 minutes but then hit a sensational strike to put Fulham ahead after half an hour.

A Danny Murphy corner came back to the Fulham captain and he had ample time to curl the ball back into the box, where Johnson hit a beautiful right-foot volley which cannoned in off the post.

Back on track: Fulham threatened throughout with Zamora and Johnson

Johnson then made it 3-0 after 57 minutes, completing a training ground routine which worked to perfection.

Murphy slotted a free-kick through to Zamora, who turned to watch his strike partner beat the goalkeeper at the near post.

Substitute Steve Sidwell, who replaced Murphy, made it 4-0 in the 79th minute.

The midfielder hit the post with his initial header from a Duff cross, but fired in his second of the season on the rebound.

Fulham within touching distance
Johnson's brilliance helps Jol's men to revenge over Wisla

Two excellent goals from Andy Johnson helped Fulham to a 4-1 win over Wisla Krakow at Craven Cottage and kept Martin Jol's club on course for a place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

The striker smashed a stunning first-half volley and then added his second of the night after the interval when applying the finishing touch to his Premier League club's superbly-worked free-kick.

Damien Duff had set the tone with an early goal at the end of a flowing move, but Andraz Kirm had equalised before Johnson's double put Jol's men in control as they sought to avenge the away defeat to Wisla at the end of October.

Gervasio Nunez had been at the centre of attention after his antics in earning Moussa Dembele a red card in Poland, but Fulham inflicted sweet payback and Steve Sidwelladded gloss to the scoreline with a bundled fourth goal.

The victory moves Fulham, who have not lost at home in 22 European matches, onto seven points in Group K and, coupled with leaders FC Twente's win over Odense, the 2010 finalists are now within touching distance of the knockout stages.

Heading into the clash, Fulham manager Jol stuck to his word by naming a strong line-up for the entertaining encounter.

Meanwhile, Wisla Krakow included Milan Jovanic, Marko Jovanovic and Ivica Iliev on the bench after they were cleared to play after visa issues.

The White Star came into the match on a poor domestic run and also had to cope without several key players in West London.

Such weakness was visible from the offset as Duff found time to strike an early shot that Sergei Pareiko did well to parry.

Cheer

The Republic of Ireland international was not to be denied for long, though, as he broke the deadlock in the fifth minute.

Neat play down the right flank saw Johnson drill in a cross that Duff tucked away with ease.

But with a plethora of Polish supporters inside Craven Cottage the match felt like a home tie and they soon had something to cheer about.

Dudu Biton found space to run at the Fulham backline and, after a neat lay off by Lukasz Gargula, Kirm struck a shot that deflected in off Riise.

An enthralling opening 10 minutes continued as Johnson looked to put Fulham back into the lead, but the flick was ruled out for offside despite the public address announcer confirming the goal.

Jol's side continued to press forward in numbers looking to re-take the lead, with Clint Dempsey coming close to heading home a Duff corner.

Wisla were also looking dangerous and wasted a good chance from a counter-attack, failing to capitalise on a man advantage as Kirm blazed a cross over.

After several heavy challenges by both sides, the noise rose inside Craven Cottage, Fulham returned to the attack and Riise saw a shot blocked wide by Cezary Wilk.

However, the home side regained the lead in the 30th minute when Danny Murphy teed up Johnson to volley home exquisitely.

Problematic
Michael Lamey and Kirm then both had shots at the other end, before attention was focused off the field due to crowd disruption.

The number of Wisla fans in the home end were proving problematic and the away section then let off a smoke bomb that engulfed the whole pitch, although referee Halis Ozkahya allowed play to continue.

Dempsey saw a cheeky chip clip the crossbar as half-time approached and the pitch cleared, before tempers began to flare as Bobby Zamora and Kew Jaliens both received yellow cards for coming head to head.

The second period started at a much slower tempo, but both sides were still eking out chances.

Wisla were pushing forward in numbers but were caught out by a clever Fulham free-kick as Murphy laid off to Zamora, who flicked on to Johnson to dink over Pareiko from close range.

Temperatures began to rise again as the second half wore on with bookings handed out to both sides, with Nunez enjoying his role as the villain.

The Argentinian midfielder was booed every time he touched the ball for his play-acting to get Dembele sent off in Poland and was guilty of simulation again on several occasions this evening.

Cheered on by the raucous away support, Wisla continued to pepper the Fulham goal and Jaliens saw a header rebound off the post.

However, the Dutch defender's header came moments after Sidwell fired home Fulham's fourth from close range after seeing his original header saved.

Fellow substitute Pajtim Kasami was the next to come close but Pareiko denied the Swiss midfielder with a fine save.

Johnson's double helps Fulham to victory

Fulham 4 Wisla Krakow 1

Andrew Johnson scored two fine goals as Fulham edged towards the knockout phase of the Europa League with a resounding victory at Craven Cottage.

The result cemented their position in second place behind Group K leaders FC Twente and means a win against the Dutch club in four weeks' time would seal a place in the next stage of the competition.

Johnson crossed for Damien Duff to put the Whites ahead before Wisla Krakow equalised when Andraz Kirm's ninth-minute effort deflected in off John Arne Riise.

But Martin Jol's side regained the lead when Johnson met Danny Murphy's right-wing cross with a sublime volley that hit the top corner of the net after clipping the woodwork.

And Johnson finished off a cleverly-worked free-kick routine early in the second half, before substitute Steve Sidwell bundled in the fourth after his initial header was saved.

Following Wisla's controversial 1-0 win when these teams recently met in Poland, a heated return match was always likely.

Gervasio Nunez might have expected a hostile reception given the over-reaction to a shove from Moussa Dembele which got the Fulham man sent off in that game.

But it was the away supporters who created a red-hot atmosphere, turning out in their thousands and producing a wall of noise.

There were Polish fans celebrating wildly on three sides of the ground when their team equalised fortuitously only four minutes after Johnson exchanged passes with Bobby Zamora and set up Duff for the opener.

David Biton's run caused panic in the Fulham defence, giving Lukasz Gargula time and space to tee up Kirm, whose shot ended up in the net after hitting Riise.

Johnson thought he had restored Fulham's advantage when he netted from close range only to be denied by an offside flag.

But there was no room for doubt when Johnson scored with an absolute peach of a strike, and another moment of sheer class  – this time from Clint Dempsey –  almost sent Fulham in at the interval 3-1 up.

After collecting Dickson Etutu's pass, Dempsey jinked his way past past three challenges and tried his luck with a deft chip that bounced off the top of the bar.

The third goal did eventually follow – and it was another beauty.

From a free-kick just outside the penalty area, Murphy fooled the Wisla defence by simply steering the ball into Zamora, who laid off to Johnson and the in-form forward did the rest, dinking over Sergei Pareiko as the keeper dived at his feet.

It was Johnson's fifth goal in four European matches and knocked the stuffing out of Wisla, although they did go close to pulling one back.

Gargula's free-kick was saved by keeper Mark Schwarzer and Tsvetan Genkov headed over as the Poles attempted to respond.

If they had any realistic chance of a comeback, it was extinguished when Pareiko tipped Sidwell's header from Duff's cross onto the bar only for the midfielder to pounce on the rebound and score Fulham's fourth.

Wisla, to their credit, still did not give up the fight and were denied a late consolation when Kew Jaliens' header struck the post.

Andy Johnson double helps Fulham beat Wisla Krakow in Europa League

The Andrew Johnson Europa League goal machine whirrs on. His second here secured the win and, coming as it did from a neat move straight off the training ground, illustrated what confidence does when the goals are flowing.

On 57 minutes Danny Murphy slid a crafty free-kick to Bobby Zamora, inside the Wisla Krakow area. Johnson's partner reversed the ball to him and his coolly spooned finish over the prone Sergei Pareiko brought his eighth goal in 11 appearances in the Europa League this season. His first goal had come on the half-hour, from a superb volley.

Martin Jol, Fulham's manager, said: "As a second striker he is one of the best. He scored a hat-trick against QPR so if he did that [all the time], it would be unbelievable. He is scoring all sorts of goals, the second [tonight] was totally different to the first. The second was amazing."

Johnson wants a new contract, to run to the close of the 2013-14 season; Fulham want it to end a year earlier. Had this display strengthened his hand? "We don't talk about it until it's happened ," said Jol, deadpan. "Maybe he will, maybe he won't."

Jol was equally dry when asked where this ranked in Fulham's displays this season: "We played some good football [this season] but the problem was the 0-0 [with Aston Villa], the 1-1 [against Blackburn Rovers]. Today we were more efficient."

Krakow, the Polish champions, arrived having two weeks ago inflicted Fulham's only defeat in the competition so far. The Dutchman sent out about as strong an XI as he could field, Johnson partnering Zamora in a 4-4-1-1 that proved instantly effective.

After Damien Duff had warmed Pareiko's fingers, he scored almost instantly. The Irishman began the move. Threading the ball to Zamora, who laid off to Johnson, the winger ran through midfield to collect and finish by applying his left foot cleanly.

Ten minutes were not up when Robert Maakant's side had an equaliser. Dickson Etuhu was mugged near the centre circle by Cezary Wilk, the visiting captain, who moved down the left-hand corridor and passed to Lukasz Gargula. He played the ball on to Andraz Kirm, whose shot deflected off John Arne Riise to leave Mark Schwarzer little chance.

Johnson believed he had re-established the lead but he was correctly adjudged to have picked up possession in an offside position. Fulham were worryingly porous at the back but they were about to fashion their impressive second goal. Murphy's cross from the right was met with a rocket of a volley from Johnson's right boot. The striker ran over to rub this in to the Krakow supporters, who taunted their counterparts incessantly and at one stage let off a smoking flare.

Before the break Clint Dempsey came close to besting Johnson in the goal-of-the-game stakes, when veering right and dinking a sand-wedge of a lob beyond Pareiko, but the ball skimmed to safety off the bar.

The concern for Jol as the second half began was whether his team could stop the flow of the Poles when they moved forward. Initially the answer was no. Gargula found time and space too easily before he was removed on the hour, soon after Fulham's third goal.

Steve Sidwell, on for Murphy, crashed home the fourth and Jol could brush off a barb aimed at him by Maakant, who claimed the Fulham manager had "played the [Gervasio] Núñez card quite well. It's always nice for a coach who worked with Luis Suárez [who bit an opponent in the Dutch league] for a year and a half [at Ajax] to say something about another player."

This referred to Jol's pre-game criticism of the Argentinian's penchant for theatrics that had caused Moussa Dembélé to be sent off in the first fixture, in Poland.

Jol shrugged and said: "We never even talked about it."

Fulham 4-1 Wisla Krakow

Fulham edged closer to the Europa League knockout stages by securing an impressive victory from a tempestuous encounter against Wisla Krakow this evening.

The west Londoners dominated the Group K tie from the offset as they avenged their controversial 1-0 defeat in Poland two weeks ago, while also extending their unbeaten home record in Europe to 22 matches.

Damien Duff handed Fulham an early lead by tucking away Andrew Johnson's low cross, but they were soon pegged back as an Andraz Kirm shot deflected in off John Arne Riise.

With in excess of 6,000 fans cheering on Wisla, there was a tense atmosphere at Craven Cottage due to Polish fans peppering the home end and a smoke bomb being let off.

However, Fulham continued undeterred on the pitch and regained the lead through Johnson's sublime volley on the 30-minute mark.

However, the home side regained the lead in the 30th minute when Danny Murphy teed up Johnson to volley home exquisitely.

Clint Dempsey saw a cheeky chip clip the crossbar as half-time approached and the pitch cleared, before tempers began to flare as Bobby Zamora and Kew Jaliens both received yellow cards for coming head to head.

The second period started at a much slower tempo but both sides were still eking out chances.

Wisla were pushing forward in numbers but were caught out by a clever Fulham free-kick as Murphy laid off to Zamora, who flicked on to Johnson to dink over Pareiko from close range.

Temperatures began to rise again as the second half wore on with bookings handed out to both sides, with Gervasio Nunez enjoying his role as the villain.

The Argentinian midfielder was booed every time he touched the ball for his play-acting to get Mousa Dembele sent off in Poland and was guilty of simulation again on several occasions this evening.

Johnson inspires Fulham to Wisła win

Fulham FC 4-1 Wisła Kraków
Damien Duff's early strike was swiftly cancelled out but two superb goals from Andrew Johnson have left Fulham in a strong position in Group K.

Fulham FC moved a step closer to the UEFA Europa League knockout phase on a raucous night at Craven Cottage.

Damien Duff's early strike was cancelled out by Andraž Kirm but Fulham were soon back ahead with a superb volley from Andrew Johnson, thriving in this competition. Johnson and substitute Steve Sidwell struck from clever set pieces after the interval to leave Fulham in Group K second place, four points ahead of Wisła and Odense BK, needing one win to advance to the last 32.

Fulham made five changes from their Group K loss at Wisła a fortnight ago. But it was one of the players that remained, Duff, who broke the deadlock, starting and finishing a flowing move involving Bobby Zamora and Johnson.

Wisła were level within four minutes as David Biton found Łukasz Garguła, who laid off for Kirm to produce a shot that deflected off John Arne Riise and past the wrong-footed Mark Schwarzer. The massive away following were in raptures.

That pace could not be maintained but the game was still open and on the half-hour Fulham were back in front. After a corner Danny Murphy crossed from the right and Johnson's twisting volley was unstoppable, fizzing in off the post.

The visitors began the second half strongly and Schwarzer did well to stop a defected Gervasio Núñez free-kick. But in a well-worked set piece at the other end, Murphy slipped the ball to Zamora, who played it wide for Johnson to strike his fifth group goal from a tight angle.

Substitute Tsvetan Genkov headed over for Wisla as they continued to push in their 100th UEFA competition fixture but Sidwell removed all doubt when he headed a Duff cross on to the bar before lashing in the rebound. Kew Jaliens hit the woodwork himself for the visitors, who now have it all to do.

Fiery Fulham gain revenge over Wisla with win at the Cottage

Europa League Group K: Fulham 4 Wisla Krakow 1

Andy Johnson scored twice to give Fulham a comfortable win at home to Wisla Krakow in their fiery UEFA Europa League Group K clash.

Damien Duff had opened the scoring, which was almost immediately cancelled out by Andraz Kirm before Johnson's brace sealed the points.

Steve Sidwell rounded off the scoring with 11 minutes remaining to give Fulham revenge for their defeat in Poland two weeks ago.

Fulham took the lead inside the first five minutes as Duff first found Andy Johnson before his return pass across the area was fired home by the Irishman from eight yards.

The lead lasted four minutes when David Biton's ball fed Kirm, whose shot took a deflection off John Arne Riise and into the Fulham net to the delight of the noisy visiting supporters.

Johnson thought he had restored Fulham's lead almost immediately after the goal however the assistant referee deemed the Englishman to be offside.

The former Everton striker did restore Fulham's lead when he brilliantly volleyed home Danny Murphy's cross from 12 yards.

The Slovenian international, Kirm, had Riise at sixes and sevens again, with the Norweigan slipping over but his shot was smothered by Mark Schwarzer.

Clint Dempsey then weaved his way through the defence to get a shot free, which clipped the underside of the bar.

David Biton nearly equalised for the Polish Ekstraklasa champions but his deflected effort was tipped round the post by Schwarzer.

Bobby Zamora, booked earlier for a spat with Kew Jaliens, fed Duff but his effort was gathered by Sergei Pareiko.

Lukasz Gargula almost restored Wisla Krakow to parity but his free-kick was very well kept out by Schwarzer.

Fulham doubled their lead with a goal straight off the training ground. Murphy's free-kick, within shooting range, was passed to Zamora who found Johnson free to bundle it home.

Gervasio Nunez, booed all night by the home fans for getting Mousa Dembele sent off, was getting a rough ride as Dickson Etuhu and Junior Diaz were booked in quick succession.

Johnson left the field to a standing ovation with 15 minutes left, replaced by Pajtim Kasami as the Whites looked to run down the clock.

Sidwell made it four with 11 minutes remaining as he reacted quickest to his header coming back off the bar to fire home.

Public enemy number one Nunez could find himself in hot water after he was seen slapping Duff in the face, which went un-noticed by the referee before Kasami nearly made it five but his bullet header was brilliantly kept out by Pareiko as Fulham ran out deserved winners.

Duff on target as Fulham overpower Krakow

Republic of Ireland international Damien Duff was on the scoresheet as Fulham edged closer to the Europa League knockout stages by securing an impressive victory from a tempestuous encounter against Wisla Krakow this evening.

The west Londoners dominated the Group K tie from the offset as they avenged their controversial 1-0 defeat in Poland two weeks ago, while also extending their unbeaten home record in Europe to 22 matches.

Duff handed Fulham an early lead by tucking away Andrew Johnson's low cross, but they were soon pegged back as an Andraz Kirm shot deflected in off John Arne Riise.

Johnson then extended the Cottagers' lead after a neat free-kick in the 57th minute, before substitute Steve Sidwell wrapped up the tie late on.

Heading into the clash, Fulham manager Martin Jol stuck to his word by naming a strong line-up for the Group K encounter.

The Ireland international was not to be denied for long, though, as he broke the deadlock in the fifth minute.

An enthralling opening 10 minutes continued as Johnson looked to put Fulham back into the lead, but the flick was ruled out for offside despite the tannoy announcer confirming the goal.

After several heavy challenges by both sides the noise rose inside Craven Cottage, Fulham returned to the attack and Riise saw a shot blocked wide by Cezary Wilk.

Fulham 4-1 Wisla Krakow: Sublime Andy Johnson double seals comfortable win after thrilling European encounter at Craven Cottage
Feisty affair ends in resounding Cottagers victory as hosts seize control against the Polish champions and put themselves into commanding position in Europa League group K

Fulham repressed the memory of their recent Europa League defeat to Wisla Krakow with a 4-1 win in a tempestuous affair with the Polish champions.
Damien Duff opened the scoring early doors, before Andraz Kirm swiftly equalised. Amid the backdrop of a smoke-filled Craven Cottage, Andy Johnson fired the hosts in front with a volley of real high class, before setting the game by prodding home a well worked free-kick after the break. Steve Sidwell then secured the points with a late finish.

The win not only maintained Fulham's 23 home game undefeated stretch in European football but ensured that they are in with more than a fighting chance of making it through the group stages of this year's competition with just two games left.

Given the precarious nature of Fulham's Europa League group K position, Martin Jol started with the strongest team at his disposal, including the front pairing of Bobby Zamora and Johnson.

Wisla's two protagonists from the clubs' previous continental encounter in Poland, goalscorer David Biton and play-acting Gervasio Nunez, were granted starts for the visitors, with the half-crocked but influential trio of Milan Jovanovic, Marko Jovanovic and Ivica Iliev all on the bench.

Within five minutes the hosts were a goal up. Duff ghosted in off the wing and slick interchange between the Irishman, Zamora and Johnson led to the latter whipping the ball across the box and Duff finishing stylishly beyond Sergei Pareiko.

The visitor's response was quick-fire though and minutes later they drew level. Wisla attacked down the left flank and after a promising looking opening was carved, the ball fell to Andraz Kirm, who took a touch and fired in a shot that took a nick off John-Arne Riise before wrong-footing Mark Schwarzer.

After a disallowed goal and nearly squaring for Zamora to ponce, Johnson – the Europa League's joint second-top goalscorer - got it gloriously right on the half hour mark. The striker seized upon Duff's second attempt to put a corner into the box to hit a wonderful volley on his right foot from the edge of the area that rocketed into the top corner.

Euro beauty | Johnson nets stunning double as Fulham brush Wisla aside

Flares lit by the voracious away fans in and around the stadium quickly led to the Cottage being filled with smoke as the game grew increasingly ill-tempered. In the period up to half-time, the main moment of note on the pitch was Clint Dempsey winding the clocks back to the visit of Juventus last year, though this time his neatly clipped effort caught the top of the bar.

The sides traded blow for blow after the interval, Duff almost finishing off another fine, flowing movement, before Lukasz Gargula tested Schwarzer with a well-struck free-kick.

However, a decisive blow came for the hosts as Johnson was hacked down on the edge of the box after Zamora stepped in well to pinch the ball off. With a move straight off the training ground, Duff rolled the ball into Zamora, who rendered Wisla wall useless by rolling the ball in behind it for Johnson to scramble onto and poke the ball beyond Pareiko.

From that point on the Cottagers toyed with their visitors, with Nunez a marked pantomime villain with his constant theatrics. Wisla peppered the Fulham goal with long range efforts to no avail as they searched for a way to get back into the game.

The win was sealed ten minutes from time when substitute Sidwell rose highest to cannon in a header that pinballed between the bar and Pareiko. The midfielder stepped in to rifle the ball home from inside the six yard box to ensure that his side were in prime position for the closing stages of the Europa League Group K qualifying campaign.

Fulham and AJ land Pole position

IT WAS firework s night at Fulham – but it just happened to come two days early.

Amid flares from Wisla fans that made Craven Cottage look like it was in a 50s pea-souper, Andy Johnson lit up the night for the Whites.

The forward (pic) twice brilliantly hit the back of the net, and even had one chalked off for offside. Had he scripted it, the 30-year-old could not have made a better case for an improved contract offer.

What did get improved was Fulham's goal difference in an electric opening spell.

Damien Duff was on the receiving end of a Johnson cross inside the box before latecomers had taken their seats.

But if the Whites thought they were in for an easy night, the Poles were level four minutes later.

Dudu Biton was allowed space to wend his way towards goal before the ball found Andraz Kirm outside him.

Kirm's right-foot shot appeared to be covered by Mark Schwarzer, but the Fulham keeper stood no chance when John-Arne Riise's heel looped the deflection into the net much to the delight of the red tide at the Putney End.

Johnson and the ground announcer were celebrating a second when the striker smashed one back past the keeper.

The microphone and the forward were silenced instantly when the flag was raised for offside.

But the assistant could only marvel on 30 minutes when the Fulham man of the moment connected perfectly to swivel and volley Fulham back into the lead via an upright from Danny Murphy's centre.

Johnson was kept quiet after that, but the non-stop niggling of Wisla's Kew Jaliens got both he and Zamora booked as they squared up to each other.

The second half was somewhat paler by comparison, and although the flares were long out, Wisla were down and out when Johnson was on the end of a slide-rule free-kick routine to chip the keeper for 3-1.

Fulham boss Martin Jol brought on subs to save the troops for Spurs on Sunday, and one of them, Steve Sidwell, rose highest to head goalwards and bring a great save from the keeper.

However, Sidwell hammered the rebound firmly back past him to keep alive the Europa League dream in west London.

Fulham rampant at the Cottage

Fulham gave their best performance of the season to beat Wisla Krakow 4-1 at Craven Cottage in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Damien Duff, an Andy Johnson brace and a late strike from Steve Sidwell gave Martin Jol's men a deserved win.

Duff put his side 1-0 up when he made the most of a low cross from the impressive Johnson, but the Cottagers' lead was short lived.

Krakow were back in the game when John Arne Riise deflected in Andraz Kirm's shot, but Fulham were not to be denied.

The goal that made it 2-1 was quite brilliant, Johnson lashing in a volley on the 30 minute mark.

From that point onwards, the Polish side never looked like getting back into the game and their fate was sealed twelve minutes after the break.

Danny Murphy laid the ball off to Bobby Zamora, who flicked on to Johnson to dink over Sergei Pareiko from close range.

In a rare effort for the visitors, Kew Jaliens saw his header come back off the post, but Fulham already had their fourth by then, Sidwell slotting in after his header had been saved.

Prolific performance: Andrew Johnson celebrates one of his two goals at Craven Cottage on Thursday night
Photo: ACTION IMAGES

Whoever said the Europa League was boring? Scuffles on the pitch, furious rows off it, a smoke bomb that briefly engulfed the entire ground and, with firework s night approaching, a goal from Andrew Johnson that could be described legitimately as a rocket.

There was also the small matter of revenge for Fulham who, after Moussa Dembélé's ridiculous sending-off in Krakow, had succumbed 1-0 in last month's corresponding fixture. That lingering sense of injustice, however, formed only part of the explanation for the extraordinary atmosphere.

The entire Putney End was filled almost exclusively by supporters of Wisla Krakow, but it soon also became clear that fans of the Polish champions were dotted throughout the 20,319 crowd. It left Fulham with a stewarding nightmare and angry recriminations from their own supporters.

Their mood was at least improved by Fulham's exceptional start. After just five minutes, Damien Duff dropped deep to collect the ball and fizzed a pass in to Bobby Zamora. The England forward instantly released Johnson down the right who, in turn, picked out Duff. The Republic of Ireland winger did not even break stride to finish clinically with his left foot.

Fulham's lead was short-lived. Dickson Etuhu unnecessarily conceded possession and the ball bounced into the path of Andraz Kirm. Mark Schwarzer appeared to have the shot covered but it cannoned off the heel of John Arne Riise and into the opposite corner.

The stadium announcer then prematurely declared that Fulham had again taken the lead, but Johnson's predatory finish from Duff's parried shot was ruled offside. No matter. What occurred in the 30th minute more than made up for it.

Duff was again involved, floating a cross into the area that Johnson volleyed sublimely past Sergei Pareiko and into the top corner. "Amazing," Martin Jol said. "If we come up with goals like that every week it would be like Real Madrid in the golden days."

Yet events went from the sublime to the ridiculous when a smoke bomb was let off, impeding the visibility for players and fans alike.

Zamora and Kew Jaliens squared up angrily and there was similar fury from the Krakow players at Etuhu's studs-up tackle on Garvasio Nunez, the midfielder whose play-acting got Dembélé sent off in Poland.

Fulham handled the highly charged atmosphere best and they extended their lead when Johnson calmly lifted his finish over Pareiko following a brilliantly worked free-kick.

The finishing touch was then applied by Steve Sidwell, who followed up emphatically after his own header had rebounded off the crossbar..

EUROPA LEAGUE: Fulham produce commanding performance to beat Wisla Krakow

Fulham tonight moved clear into second spot in the Europa League's Group K table thanks to a commanding 4-1 home win over Wisla Krakow.

The Cottagers were desperate to atone for their 1-0 away loss to the Poles when Moussa Dembele was controversially sent off and they managed to do it in style with help from an Andy Johnson brace which takes his tally to eight goals in Europe so far this season.

It started out well for the home side as they took the lead through Damien Duff inside five minutes as he slotted home a neat cross from Johnson from the right but within four minutes the visitors were back on level terms courtesy of Andraz Kirm's attempt deflected in off Cottagers left-back John Arne Riise.

But sanity at Craven Cottage was soon restored when Johnson sent a sublime volley home on the half-hour mark before adding a second, to make it 3-1, when Danny Murphy's quick free-kick was laid off to Bobby Zamora who flicked it into the path of Johnson to fire home from close range.

The victory was complete when Steve Sidwell managed to follow-up his initial header to slot home in the 79th minute, making it 4-1, and pushing Martin Jol's men four points clear of Odense and Wisla in second with FC Twente three points ahead of the Cottagers at the top.

Johnson inspires thoughts of another magical Fulham run

Martin Jol was spot on in his analysis of Fulham's first three goals as his players' performances on the pitch and Wisla Krakow's raucous fans off it reminded everyone why the Europa League is not such a bad competition after all.

"The first one was a great move," the Dutch manager mused. "The second was amazing and the third one was clever. If you could come up with ideas like that every week you would be like Real Madrid in the golden days."

Fulham's progress from Group K, where they are currently in second place, is not yet assured but is now looking likely after two goals from Andy Johnson, currently in dispute with his employers over the length of a new contract, and one each from Damien Duff and substitute Steve Sidwell added up to a comfortable victory. Add in the sideshow that was Gervasio Nunez, the man whose play-acting engineered a red card for Moussa Dembélé in the reverse fixture, and it was a night to remember at Craven Cottage.

Duff scored the first, beginning and then finishing a swift, once-touch move involving Johnson and Bobby Zamora. Wisla then equalised after Dickson Etuhu had been caught in possession, with Andraz Kirm's shot needing a hefty deflection off John Arne Riise to fox Mark Schwarzer but Fulham were back in front on the half hour with the goal of the game.

Johnson volleyed Danny Murphy's delivery in off a post so crisply that inevitably the question of the possibility of an England recall after four years in the wilderness followed. The 30-year-old's second was one of the best too, a training ground free-kick routine that caught Wisla flat-footed. Zamora flicked on Murphy's low pass to enable Johnson to convert at the near post. Sidwell completed the scoring late on, on the rebound after his header had hit the bar and the Fulham fans also had fun booing Nunez.

Fulham (4-4-2): Schwarzer; Kelly, Baird, Hangeland, Riise; Duff, Etuhu, Murphy (Sidwell, 63), Dempsey; Johnson (Kasami, 76), Zamora. (Frei, 72). Substitutes not used Etheridge (gk), Gecov, Grygera, Briggs.

Jol's Wisla Reaction
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Management/Jol/EuropaConfFace1.jpg)

Speaking to members of the press after Thursday evening's UEFA Europa League victory over Wisla Krakow at Craven Cottage, Fulham Manager Martin Jol gave his post-match assessment.

"We scored early so that was good but then we lost the ball in midfield [and they scored]," said the Fulham Manager.

"That said, we scored some great goals. The second goal was amazing and the third one was a clever one.

"If you could come up with ideas like that every week you would be like Real Madrid in the golden days.

"I think sometimes it is nice to see them do something in training and it comes on it the match.

"We have played some good football this season. The only problem is the nil-nils and the one-alls, with three draws at home.

"Even last week if we had won [against Everton] we would be in a nice position in the top 10.

"Today you could say we were very efficient because normally we create eight or nine chances and we score one goal and today we were different."

Jol praise for Johnson
Fulham boss also pleased with efficiency of team

Fulham manager Martin Jol believes Andrew Johnson is one of the best second strikers in the business, but has made a joke of suggestions the forward could earn an England recall.

The former Everton and Crystal Palace star scored two excellent goals in a 4-1 win over Wisla Krakow on Thursday night which kept his current club on course for a place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

The 30-year-old has now netted eight continental goals this season, which has led to some people to suggest he may be worthy of an England call-up.

Injury-plagued Johnson has not represented his country since earning the most recent of his eight caps in the 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany at Wembley in 2007, while he was infamously played as a winger on his senior international debut by Sven Goran Eriksson.

But Jol said: "Johnson for England? What, are they going to play him out on the right like they did before?

Unbelievable

"If you keep on scoring everyone says you should be in the England team but, for me, as a second striker he is one of the better ones.

"He scored a hat-trick against QPR and if he could do that every game it would be unbelievable, but we are not doing that.

"It was nice to see him score goals because his second goal was completely different to his first so that is good for a striker. It gives him a lot of confidence."

Jol also praised his side for their efficiency in front of goal as they turned over Wisla in comprehensive fashion at Craven Cottage, with Damien Duff and Steve Sidwell also on target.

"We scored early so that was good, but then we lost the ball in midfield [and they scored]," said Jol. "That said, we scored some great goals. The second goal was amazing and the third one was a clever one.

"If you could come up with ideas like that every week you would be like Real Madrid in the golden days."

'It was like Real Madrid of the olden days' - Fulham boss Martin Jol hails Andy Johnson's second goal after European triumph
Win at Craven Cottage delights boss as they downed Polish champions Wisla Krakow 4-1 in a tremendous Europa League encounter

Fulham boss Martin Jol has praised his side's ruthlessness in front of goal after they swept aside Wisla Krakow with a convincing 4-1 scoreline.

The Cottagers shot straight into the lead after Damien Duff capped off a fine move with a classy finish within five minutes before Andraz Firm swiftly equalised.

A spectacular Andrew Johnson volley put the hosts back ahead before Johnson poked home another after a smart set piece routine, before Steve Sidwell powered home to put the icing on the cake.

The resounding win comes in stark contrast to a lot of recent Fulham performances that have ended in stalemates.

"We played some good football," said Jol. "We scored early so that was good. Then we lost the ball in midfield, they broke and played us on the turnover, they're a good footballing team.

"After losing the ball your organisation should be 100 per cent and that was something that wasn't great.

"But after that we scored some great goals. The second goal was amazing, the third one was clever. At 3-1 up I could make some substitutions.

"The only problem has been the 0-0's the 1-1's the draws at home. If we would have scored the winner last week we would have been in a nice position in the league, in the top 10.

"The first goal was a great move but today you can say we were very efficient. Normally we create eight or nine chances and score one goal and today was different."

The game looked in the balance after the two sides traded early strikes, but Andrew Johnson's brace proved the game's decisive moments.

For Jol, the contrasting nature of both strikes proved that Johnson is a man on form.

"If you can come up with those sort of ideas all the time it would be like Real Madrid of the olden days," said Jol about the free-kick Johnson capped off for the third.

"Sometimes it's nice to see something in training come off in games. Johnson scored a hat-trick against QPR so if he does that every game it is unbelievable, but you don't do that every game.

"It is nice to see him get all sorts of goals, the second was very different from the first.  It's good for a striker. It gives you a lot of confidence.

The result puts Fulham back in a commanding position in the Europa League group K, with crucial match-ups against Odense and Twente coming up.

With other managers bemoaning the schedule brought about my involvement in the competition, Jol maintains that it is a tournament in which the club want to do well.

"I have mixed feelings because the target is always to win the competition," continued Jol. "Sometimes you have your doubts sometimes you are very positive, after today we are very positive."

Jol delight as Fulham find range

Fulham boss Martin Jol has praised his side's ruthlessness in front of goal after they swept aside Wisla Krakow 4-1 in the Europa League.

The English Premier League club shot straight into the lead in Thursday's Group K encounter after Damien Duff capped off a fine move with a classy finish within five minutes, before Andraz Firm swiftly equalised.

A spectacular Andrew Johnson volley put the hosts back ahead at half-time before the striker poked home another after a smart set-piece routine in the second half.

Steve Sidwell powered home a header in the 79th minute to ice the result against the Polish club.

The resounding win comes in stark contrast to several recent Fulham performances that have ended in stalemates.

"We played some good football," Jol said. "We scored early so that was good. Then we lost the ball in midfield, they broke and played us on the turnover - they're a good footballing team."

"After losing the ball your organisation should be 100 percent and that was something that wasn't great."

"But after that we scored some great goals. The second goal was amazing, the third one was clever. At 3-1 up I could make some substitutions."

"The first goal was a great move but today you can say we were very efficient. Normally we create eight or nine chances and score one goal and today was different."

The match looked in the balance after the two sides traded early strikes, but Andrew Johnson's second proved the game's decisive moment.

For Jol, the contrasting nature of both strikes proved that Johnson is a man on form.

"If you can come up with those sort of ideas all the time it would be like Real Madrid of the olden days," Jol said of the free-kick Johnson capped off for the third.

"Sometimes it's nice to see something in training come off in games. Johnson scored a hat-trick against QPR so if he does that every game it is unbelievable, but you don't do that every game."

"It is nice to see him get all sorts of goals, the second was very different from the first. It's good for a striker. It gives you a lot of confidence."

The result puts Fulham back in a commanding position in Group K, with crucial match-ups against Odense and Twente to come.

The London club are on seven points and sit second behind Dutch club Twente, who have 10.

Meanwhile, Wisla Krakow boss Robert Maaskant rued his team's performance in the second half, a period in which they conceded twice after being just 2-1 down at the break.

"(In the) second half, we just lost the goals way too easy," he said.

"A set piece ... no concentration at that moment and I decided that Fulham were a little bit stronger than what we were."

Zamora Pleased
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Players/Zamora/CelebJohnsonWisla.jpg)

Bobby Zamora was satisfied on Thursday evening after playing his part in a convincing 4-1 victory over Wisla Krakow in the UEFA Europa League.

"We were pleased to win, obviously," he said. "And it was a good performance with a few goals, which is always nice."

The Whites did the damage with goals from Damien Duff and Steve Sidwell either side of two superbly taken strikes from Andrew Johnson, a striker clearly on-form as he took his tally in the competition to eight this season.

"There were some well worked goals, so we were pleased with that," he reflected. "And AJ's on fire – he's the man at the minute, and long may it continue for him and for us.

"After a year out injured he's come back and he's strong. He's proving a point to a lot of people who doubted him."

Zamora played a part in Johnson's second, and Fulham's third, himself – a neatly worked free-kick – but the England man was coy in discussing the origins of a move that looked like it had been very well rehearsed.

"We tried it for the first time the other day," he said. "We've literally done it once in training! It worked brilliantly, so don't go telling everyone, or you'll expose it!"

Fulham came out of the blocks from the off, taking the game to their Polish opponents with high intensity from the first whistle, an approach Zamora revealed was partly fuelled by a sense of injustice from the defeat in Poland two weeks earlier.

"Yeah, we were a bit disappointed with that," he admitted. "So the lads were really up for it tonight. We knew we had to win this one and prove a point to them, so it was nice to win, but now we have to think about a tough game on Sunday."

Indeed, it's back to Premier League action this weekend with the visit of Tottenham Hotspur who may have suffered Europa League defeat in Russia, but managed to rest some of their top stars for Sunday's derby game.

However, Bobby and his team-mates are confident they can get a positive result.

"To be fair, in the past couple of seasons we've put in some good performances against them, so it would be nice to do the same and win, but it's going to be tough," he detailed. "They're a great side with some top players, so it won't be easy.

"But we're at home, which is massive. We've got a great record here, so hopefully we'll put in a good performance again and get a good result."

FULHAM 4 WISLA KRAKOW 1: ANDREW JOHNSON'S DOUBLE DELIGHT

ANDREW JOHNSON continued his sensational Europa League form with a Craven Cottage double last night.

The striker found the net with a goal of the season contender and a clever chip to put Fulham in command against the Poles.

Johnson's brace took his tally to eight goals in just 11 games in the competition as Fulham got their Europa League bid back on track.

Damien Duff had given Fulham the lead but they were quickly pegged back by Andraz Kirm.

The Europa League is high on Martin Jol's list of priorities, but that wasn't the only reason the boss threw his big guns at Wisla.

Fulham were still fuming after losing the controversial clash in Krakow a fortnight ago.

They were forced to play with 10 men for over an hour in Poland after Moussa Dembele was shown a straight red for a soft shove on Gervasio Nunez, which the Argentinian made a meal of.

With that and work still to do in Group K for second-placed Fulham, Jol sent out a side with just three changes from the 2-0 weekend win over Wigan.

Wisla villain Nunez was named in the Poles' starting line-up and his every touch was booed.

But the boos turned to cheers when Duff fired Fulham in front in the fifth minute after a slick move involving Clint Dempsey, Bobby Zamora and Johnson.

Wisla hit back four minutes later when Kirm's shot deflected past Mark Schwarzer after Dickson Etuhu was robbed in midfield.

Everyone, including the stadium announcer, thought Fulham had responded in perfect fashion a minute later but Johnson's tap-in was ruled out for offside.

He was not to be denied, though, and there was no chalking off his stunner on the half-hour.

Wisla failed to clear a corner and after Danny Murphy swung the ball back in, Johnson met it with a perfect swivelling right-foot volley which flew in off the post.

The visiting fans didn't like what they were seeing and set off a flare in the stands, which led to the pitch being temporarily covered in smoke.

Dempsey then produced a dazzling solo run which ended with a shot against the bar.

Fulham struck again in the 57th minute when Johnson chipped home from close range after a clever free-kick routine involving Duff and Zamora.

And substitute Steve Sidwell wrapped it up 10 minutes from time.

His initial header from Duff's cross was pushed on to the bar by keeper Sergei Pareiko but he smashed home the rebound.

Fulham handed striker boost

ORLANDO Sa is set to return to training next week as he battles to overcome a hamstring problem.

The Fulham frontman has been sidelined for the past fortnight after limping out of the Europa League defeat against Wisla Krakow last month.

But boss Martin Jol hopes the Portuguese ace will be able to resume sessions at the club's Motspur Park training ground next week.

The striker should be in contention to return to action for Fulham's Premier League clash with Sunderland on November 19.

Zamora issues Johnson contract plea

BOBBY Zamora has urged Fulham to pull out all the stops to keep Andy Johnson at Craven Cottage.

The former England frontman is in the final 12 months of his contract in SW6, with the 30-year-old at loggerheads with the club over a new deal.

Fulham have offered Johnson a one-year extension, but the striker wants fresh terms that will tie his future to the club until 2014.

AJ bagged his 11th goal of the season so far in last night's Europa League win against Wisla Krakow.

And Zamora has urged the club to keep his strike partner with the Whites at all costs.

He said: "AJ's on fire. He's the man at the minute and long may it continue.

"He's massive to the club. Some people say he's had a traumatic couple of years, but he's been injured for one year.

"People say he hasn't done anything for us, but the first season I was here with him he was on fire.

"He's come back after his injury and proved a point to a lot of people, which is good."

Briggs earns another England U21s call-up
by DAN on NOVEMBER 4, 2011

Fulham's Matthew Briggs has earned another call-up to the England under-21 squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Iceland and Belgium.

The left-back has become a regular in Stuart Pearce's squad after impressing during his two previous outings for the Under-21s. He was named in the side for the last qualifier – a 2-1 win in Norway – but had to pull out after injuring himself in the warm-up. Briggs has enjoyed a strong side to the season with Fulham, pushing new signing John Arne Riise all the way, and making 12 appearances for the first team as he establishes himself as a key member of Martin Jol's squad. Briggs scored his first goal for Fulham in the Europa League qualifier against Crusaders in Belfast.

Pearce, who is hoping to guide England to a fourth successive major championship finals, will be without the on-loan West Ham midfielder Henri Lansbury but offers the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Lewis Dunk, Jacob Butterfield, Tom Carroll and Alex Nimely the chance to win their first caps at this level.

FULL ENGLAND UNDER-21 SQUAD (FOR GAMES AGAINST ICELAND AND BELGIUM) – GOALKEEPERS: Ben Amos (Manchester United), Jack Butland (Cheltenham Town – loan from Birmingham City), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough).

DEFENDERS: Nathan Baker (Aston Villa), Ryan Bennett (Peterborough United), Matthew Briggs (Fulham), Nathaniel Clyne (Crystal Palace), Craig Dawson (West Bromwich Albion), Lewis Dunk (Brighton & Hove Albion), Jon Flanagan (Liverpool), Martin Kelly (Liverpool), Adam Smith (MK Dons – loan from Tottenham Hotspur).

MIDFIELDERS: Ross Barkley (Everton), acob Butterfield (Barnsley), Tom Carroll (Tottenham Hotspur), Gary Gardner (Aston Villa), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jason Lowe (Blackburn Rovers), Josh McEachran (Chelsea), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Jack Rodwell (Everton).

FORWARDS: Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Alex Nimely (Middlesbrough – loan from Manchester City), Marvin Sordell (Watford), Connor Wickham (Sunderland).

STANDBY: Joe Bennett (Middlesbrough), Declan Rudd (Norwich City), Jonjo Shelvey (Blackpool – loan from Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Dan Gosling (Newcastle United).

Fulham's Johnson enjoys strike of a lifetime

Andrew Johnson told UEFA.com that the volley that set Fulham FC on their way to beating Wisła Kraków was "as clean a strike as I've hit in my career" and Bobby Zamora hailed his forward partner.

The key to Fulham FC's vital 4-1 UEFA Europa League Group K defeat of Wisła Kraków was two superb goals from Andrew Johnson and of the first, a scorching volley that restored his side's lead, was "as clean a strike as I've hit in my career". Wisła midfielder Júnior Díaz identified Johnson's second goal, a training ground free-kick move that made it 3-1, as the decisive moment.

Andrew Johnson, Fulham forward
It was a hard game, and it was a hard game away from home. We are delighted to get the three points to give us a great chance of qualifying. We have a couple of big games, FC Twente and Odense coming up, so if we can get another win we'll be safe.

I'm pleased [with the goals]. The main thing was that the team got the win they needed because we lost at their place the other week which was a bit disappointing. I was delighted, the first one was a great ball from Danny Murphy and probably as clean a strike as I've hit in my career. And it was a well-worked free-kick for the second one, something we'd been practising on and I was delighted to get it over the keeper.

I don't think you like going into the last couple of games waiting on other results. You want the incentive and it is up to us to go and do it. It's a massive competition. We got to the final a couple of years ago and everybody knows how important it is to the club and it is to us as well. So I'm delighted to keep on scoring and hopefully I can carry on.

It was a great atmosphere. I'm not sure how many Polish fans were here but they made a great effort so it was a great game, a great atmosphere. Fulham fans were top class like they always are week in, week out and they played their part.

Bobby Zamora, Fulham forward
Pleased to win obviously. A good performance and a few goals for the boys which is nice. Some good goals, some well-worked goals, I'm pleased because AJ's on fire. He's the man at the minute, long may it continue for him.

We were a bit disappointed [to lose in Poland], the lads were up for it. Had to win this one and prove a point, it was nice to beat them. The atmosphere was good, they brought some good fans, a good number of fans, it was a good atmosphere and it was pleasing. We'd worked on that free-kick [that made it 3-1] for the first time the other day. It worked brilliantly.

Júnior Díaz, Wisła midfielder
We tried to do everything we could to win this game, but it was tough. You could say Fulham won easily and they did good work – but so did we. The score is not good for us but tried to do all we could to win.

We had a chance and the opportunities to score [after equalising]. Then Fulham took their chances. The difference was the move from their free-kick for the third goal, I think this goal made a big difference to the game. It was a very good atmosphere, it's very nice to play here.

Points over Revenge for Dempsey

Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey insists three points rather than revenge was the motivating factor against Wisla Krakow.

The Cottagers were beaten 1-0 by the Polish champion two weeks ago in a game marred by Mousa Dembele's controversial sending off.

The incident occurred when an innocuous passage of play flared up in Poland, with Dembele pushing over Wisla's Gervasio Nunez after he caught him on the back of the ankle.

The Argentina midfielder went down clutching his face despite being pushed at shoulder height and, while admitting it was nice to get revenge, Dempsey insists it was not the main motivation for the 4-1 win.

"It was to get the points," the United States international said. "[Revenge] was a bonus, showing the team what kind of quality we do have.

"I thought we did that and the most important thing is that we got the points to help us get out the group stage.

"It was a good game. We would have preferred not to have conceded and kept a clean sheet.

"It was good for some players to get some goals and some assists, which I think will help us going forward.

"At home we always try and take the game to our opponents. I think we play a good style of football.

"We had good movement in the midfield and up front, while our outside backs were overlapping so we had chances and our players stepped up for us."

The victory helped Dempsey and his Fulham team-mates edge closer to the Europa League knockout stages in what was a tempestuous encounter.

Andrew Johnson's brace was complemented by efforts from Damien Duff and Steve Sidwell, propelling Fulham four points clear of Group K rivals Odense BK and Wisla Krakow.

"We have played some good football this season," Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "The only problem is the nil-nils and the one-alls, with three draws at home.

"Even last week if we had won [against Everton] we would be in a nice position in the top 10.

"Today you could say we were very efficient because normally we create eight or nine chances and we score one goal and today we were different."

Meanwhile, Wisla Krakow manager Rob Maaskant thinks counterpart Jol used the Nunez incident in the first game to his advantage.

"Martin Jol played the Nunez card quite well, which gave us a little bit of a hostile situation in this stadium," he said.

"It's always nice for a coach who worked with Luis Suarez [as manager at Ajax] for a year and a half to say something about another player like that.

"That said, I think Nunez did really well."

Fulham defender Stephen Kelly eyes Spurs scalp

STEPHEN Kelly is desperate to get one over on his old club when Fulham face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Fulham full-back came through the ranks at White Hart Lane, and went on to make more than 40 appearances for Spurs before his switch to Birmingham City five years ago.

The Irishman beat his former employers with the Blues in 2008, but has never tasted victory against Tottenham with the Whites
Kelly has been restricted to a bit-part player in the Premier League under Martin Jol, but was handed a rare start in last night's Europa League win over Wisla Krakow.

And the 28-year-old hopes he can make a mark against his old team-mates at Craven Cottage.

He said: "I have a lot of time for Tottenham. I went there when I was 16 and was in the first-team ever since I turned 19.

"I had a great spell at the club and only have fond memories. It's a place I hold dear to my heart but they're competition now, and it's always nice to get one over on your old team.

"They're a very good side who have spent a lot of money over the past few years. We've done well against them in the past so there's no reason we can't do it again."

Fulham v Wisla Krakow reaction
Martin Jol praised Fulham for their efficiency in front of goal as they turned over Wisla Krakow in comprehensive fashion at Craven Cottage.

The Londoners edged closer to the Europa League knockout stages by securing an impressive 4-1 victory from a tempestuous encounter against the Polish champions.

Andrew Johnson's double was complemented by efforts from Damien Duff and Steve Sidwell, propelling Fulham four points clear of Group K rivals Odense BK and Wisla Krakow.

"We scored early so that was good but then we lost the ball in midfield [and they scored]," he said.

Johnson was one of Fulham's standout performers this evening, putting his side out of sight after netting a sublime volley.

The 30-year-old has now netted eight Europa League goals this season, which has led to some people suggesting he may be worthy of an England call up.

Jol said: "Johnson for England? What, are they going to play him out on the right like they did before?

"If you keep on scoring everyone says you should be in the England team but, for me, as a second striker he is one of the better ones.

"He scored a hat-trick against QPR and if he could do that every game it would be unbelievable but we are not doing that.

"It was nice to see him score goals because his second goal was completely different to his first so that is good for a striker.

"It gives him a lot of confidence."

There was quite an atmosphere at Thursday evening's match, with Wisla Krakow bringing in excess of 6,000 fans to the stadium.

However, there was a tense atmosphere at Craven Cottage due to Polish fans peppering the home end and a smoke bomb being let off.

Jol warned his players about the potential atmosphere before the match and was pleased with how they carried on undeterred.

"I let the lads know they bought [thousands of] tickets and that it is always strange," he said.

"I had it in Germany playing against Galatasaray and they brought 30,000 and we only had 20,000.

"That was a bit awkward but because of the result and the goals we scored we kept them nice and quiet."

The result saw Fulham avenge their controversial 1-0 defeat in Poland two weeks ago, where Mousa Dembele was sent off.

The Belgium international was sent off for a push on Gervasio Nunez, who went down clutching his face despite being pushed on the shoulder.

Nunez was booed by Fulham fans every time he touched the ball as a consequence and Wisla Krakow manager Rob Maaskant thinks counterpart Jol used the incident to his advantage.

"Martin Jol played the Nunez card quite well, which gave us a little bit of a hostile situation in this stadium," he said.

"It's always nice for a coach who worked with Luis Suarez [as manager at Ajax] for a year and a half to say something about another player like that.

"That said, I think Nunez did really well today."

Clint Dempsey: Revenge over Wisla is bonus

Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey insists three points rather than revenge was the motivating factor against Wisla Krakow last night.

The Cottagers were beaten 1-0 by the Polish champions two weeks ago in a game marred by Mousa Dembele's controversial sending off.

The incident occurred when an innocuous passage of play flared up in Poland, with Dembele pushing over Wisla's Gervasio Nunez after he caught him on the back of the ankle.

The Argentinian midfielder went down clutching his face despite being pushed at shoulder height and, while admitting it was nice to get revenge, Dempsey insists it was not the main motivation for the 4-1 win.

It was good for some players to get some goals and some assists, which I think will help us going forward.

"At home we always try and take the game to our opponents. I think we play a good style of football. We had good movement in the midfield and up front, while our outside backs were overlapping so we had chances and our players stepped up for us."

Today you could say we were very efficient because normally we create eight or nine chances and we score one goal and today we were different."

That said, I think Nunez did really well."

Smoking Fulham edge to knockout

FULHAM edged closer to the Europa League knockout stages by securing an impressive victory from a tempestuous encounter against Wisla Krakow last night.

However, Fulham continued undeterred and regained the lead through Johnson's sublime volley on the 30-minute mark.

Johnson then extended the Cottagers' lead after a neat free-kick before sub Steve Sidwell wrapped up the tie .

Fulham Storm To Europa League Victory

Fulham are on the verge of Europa League qualification, as a convincing 4-1 win over Wisla Krakow on Thursday night got their campaign back on track.

Damian Duff opened the scoring for the home side after only five minutes, but the Polish champions equalised soon after through a Andras Kirm strike.

The result was sown up by goals either side of half time, as striker Andrew Johnson bagged a brace, before Steven Sidwell completed the rout.

The win means that the Cottagers are in second place in Group K behind leaders Twente and four points above the side they just beat and Danish outfit OB Odense.

After the game manager Martin Jol was full of praise for his team.

"We scored early so that was good, but then we lost the ball in midfield [and they scored]," the Dutch coach told Sky Sports.

"That said, we scored some great goals. The second goal was amazing and the third one was a clever one.

"If you could come up with ideas like that every week you would be like Real Madrid in the golden days," he stated.

The former Spurs boss also praised goalscorer Johnson, who continues to find the net for the Craven Cottage side on a regular basis.

"He scored a hat-trick against QPR and if he could do that every game it would be unbelievable, but we are not doing that.

"It was nice to see him score goals because his second goal was completely different to his first so that is good for a striker. It gives him a lot of confidence," he concluded.

Fulham now host London rivals Tottenham on Sunday, and will look to take momentum from this comfortable victory.

Big Martin Jol

One of the better introductions to the match day experience at White Hart Lane during the last decade has been the clips compilation played over the Jumbotron before the teams come out. The quick pick 'n' mix delight of goals, tackles and saves accompanied by a faux operatic soundtrack ends these days with the French Fawlty lookey-likey in full water bottle destroying mode. For a few years though the image that was left to linger was that of a strong jaw beneath pursed lips and a steely eyed stare. Yes we loved Martin Jol, and Martin Jol loved us.

BMJ, a bit like Redknapp, fell into the role of manager almost by chance after the board's Chosen One, appointed after long deliberation and consultation, proved to have a leaden rather than Ledley like touch. Jacques Santini disappeared around Bonfire Night 2004 (apparently without trace) and Jol was promoted from within. His three seasons in charge were generally successful as he took us back into Europe whilst we took some key steps forward. It wasn't enough though apparently as Levy and chums actively pursued Juande Ramos whilst the big man was still in charge and Jol's managerial reign was brought to an undignified end at some time during the evening of the home defeat to Getafe.

Since then despite some near misses in European competition we've not crossed paths since, until now. It's Fulham and Craven Cottage on Sunday and I bet the home manager cannot wait to take the walk across the pitch in front of the away end when he'll surely receive a greeting befitting the size of the affection we had for the man. If nothing else his face off with Wenger on the Highbury touchline as we chased fourth in 2006 should be high in everyone's list of favoured images.

The man was only a stomach virus away from leading us into the Champions League years. He's got no hair but we don't care, Martin Martin Jol.

We must keep 'on fire' hitman - Zamora

Bobby Zamora has urged Fulham to ensure strike partner Andrew Johnson signs a new contract saying 'he's the man at the minute'.

The England international spoke out about the 30-year-old former Three Lions star, who took his tally to 11 goals in 19 appearances for the season with a brace in Fulham's 4-1 Europa League win against Wisla Krakow at Craven Cottage on Thursday evening.

In addition to renewed calls for Johnson to be given another chance on the international stage, Zamora called on the Cottagers to give him what he wants to ensure he stays put at the club beyond the end of his contact next summer.

Meanwhile, Johnson was delighted with the win and his two goals on Thursday as he fired in a volley from the edge of the box, before producing a chip over the goalkeeper.

He said: "Everyone knew it was a big game today, we've got another couple of games against FC Twente coming up, so it was a big three points for us and has given us a great chance now.

"I'm delighted. I'm just pleased to be back. I like full form. Full on fitness and training day in, day out and scoring goals which I enjoy doing."

Clint: Points were vital, revenge was a bonus
by DAN on NOVEMBER 4, 2011

Clint Dempsey says re-establishing Fulham's bid for a place in the last 32 of the Europa League was the primary motivation ahead of last night's win over Wisla Krakow, but getting some revenge for their disappointing defeat in Poland was a nice bonus.

Martin Jol's side stormed to a 4-1 win at Craven Cottage thanks to an early strike from Damien Duff, two terrific goals from Andy Johnson and a late Steve Sidwell effort. Dempsey was pleased with the many of Fulham's victory:

It was to get the points. Revenge was a bonus, showing the team what kind of quality we do have. I thought we did that and the most important thing is that we got the points to help us get out the group stage.

Dempsey: Revenge not the spur

Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey insists three points rather than revenge was the motivating factor against Wisla Krakow on Thursday night.

Writeup: Fulham 4-1 Wisla Krakow

European football does strange things to players. Andrew Johnson's league form has been okay – that hat-trick is in the Fulham FC permanent scrapbook – but in Europe he seemingly can't be stopped. Last night he nabbed two more for the collection, and what beauties they were.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Fulham scored first, early, when Duff finished off a lovely sweeping move involving Johnson and Zamora. That briefly silenced the Polish masses, although they were happy again a few minutes later when Wisla equalised with a deflected shot.

This gave us a chance to see exactly how many away fans had infiltrated home sections. Infiltrated implies some degree of subtlety though, doesn't it? At any rate, we saw how many away fans were sitting wherever they wanted to, and indeed there were many, brazenly cheering, scarf waving and making themselves loud.  I'm really in two minds about this: on the one hand, by the unofficial laws of football fandom this is "a terrible thing" and indicative of "taking the piss", on the other it contributed to an amazing atmosphere with plenty of good natured fun (no really). If we remove the whole territorial pissings element (hard to do, I appreciate) then segregation is a curious concept: altogther necessary, usually, but also somewhat false. If Fulham fans had bought up all the tickets there wouldn't have been any spare for the Wisla fans, and, let's face it, we haven't had a better atmosphere in the ground since the last European run, and even then I don't know if it was as good as last night.

Perhaps this was because we sat next to the away fans in the Johnny Haynes stand, a deliberate move aimed at taking in a good bit of shouting. True, the flares and smoke were a bit iffy for a wooden construction, but even they added to the atmosphere.

All of which surely added to the quality of what we saw on the pitch. With the score at 1-1 AJ belted a volley across himself and into the top corner, one of those "what?" moments when you question what you've just seen, not least because it was a very un-AJ goal. Credit to the man for showing technique I didn't know he had. The European scene seems to agree with him, eh?

Clint Dempsey then wormed his way through several challenges before hitting the bar with a chip – what a goal that would've been.

We got another when Murphy pinged a free-kick to Zamora, who turned the ball on first time into the path of Johnson, who dinked it over the goalkeeper from close in. A first class move that reminded me of Zanetti's World Cup goal against England (1998?); a good idea, beautifully executed.  Like all of the best things, it looked so simple.  A fourth came when Steve Sidwell bundled home after an initial effort (his? Dempseys?) had been palmed onto the bar following a corner.

Beyond the goals the match itself was lively and entertaining. Wisla's players were largely pretty tidy, with the hated Nunez particularly prominent (Etuhu cleaned him out in the second half with a thumping, legal, but dangerousish tackle).  The 4-1 scoreline perhaps flattered us, but perhaps also reflected the difference in quality between the sides.

Fulham v Tottenham - the opposite view

Funny old week eh.
Harry Redknapp, darling of the media went to hospital for what the press would have you believe was a life saving operation, when in fact it was nothing more than a standard procedure in which Harry was in and out of hospital in a matter of hours. Still, I expect it still gave the Daily Mail an opportunity to moan about foreign doctors.
The we had to go to Russia to play in a game which looked like no one wanted to play in. The only people who did look up for it were the Rubin Kazan fans. In truth I am not surprised when you consider the 4th ranked attraction in Kazan is "the main street" which has been described as a "fairly average shopping street" and "a nice walk"
I'll be honest, during the Kazan game I barely looked up from my computer, instead working on getting my record label off the ground. I even popped out for a curry midway through the 2nd half. It would seems Spurs' general lack of effort is rubbing off on me.
But back on to the good stuff with yet another Sunday 4pm kick off and the return of Martin Jol, the man who single handedly built Spurs, cured all known cancers and gave birth to baby Jesus. No wonder Harry is going to put his feet up this weekend.
Anyway, I love it when we play Fulham. Not because the game generates any guarenteed win but because I get to interview Derek Payne again. This is perhaps one of the fan interviews I look forward to every year. If you like Derek as much as me then why not give him a follow on Twitter – find him in 140 charachters right here

WAFR: Welcome back to What A Fantastic Run. How would you assess Fulham's start to the campaign?
A peculiar mix of the sublime and the predictable. You'd have put money on us coming a cropper at Molineux (Mick McCarthy's grudge match of the season) and losing to the Tony Pulis Rollerball XI. Less predictable was Everton's injury time burglary and the polished, contemptuous dismissal of QPR.
In between there's been sufficient dross against Villa and Blackburn to remind you that the self styled 'greatest league in the world' often isn't.
The season has been a hybrid of rare beauty and the more prosaic like watching the head of Jo Brand welded onto the body of Kim Kardashian.

WAFR: Martin Jol is obviously a manager highly regarded by a lot of Spurs fans but he has appeared to struggle making an impact at Fulham with reports suggesting player falls outs on top of disappointing results. How is his appointment regarded by fans at this stage?
The message boards are schizophrenic. It's either 'Jol out' or 'in Martin we trust': views often expressed by the same person in the same 24 hours.
There have been questions over his tactics, which sometimes betray what little Englanders would call a continental ability to take the confusing option over the simple one. Why for instance, when a full back is injured and there's a ready made replacement on the bench do you bring on an extra centre-half as he did against Everton?
Rumblings in the squad, whether true or not, are to be expected. This side has pretty much picked itself for the last three years with only minor competition for places. With the addition of new players it was always likely someone would get the hump.
On the whole, being easily seduced by events like an away win at Wigan, I'd have to say that most recognise Jol and Fulham as a perfect fit for the long term.

WAFR: Fulham have been a team who look like they have gone a little backwards since Hodgson left the club – it this purely down to losing a manager like Roy or are there other factors involved?
The team went so fast forward under Hodgson that they're probably still adjusting to the g-force. I certainly don't think we've gone backwards.
The problem was that Hodgson built a team for the here-and-now. His mixture of wise heads, loanees and misfits was designed to get us out of trouble, not to look to the future. They over succeeded spectacularly but there was no long term plan. When Hughes came in he tinkered with the tactics and personnel. It was as though he knew the engine needed an overhaul but decided to just buff up the spark plugs. In retrospect, he obviously didn't expect to stick around.
Jol has had to get his head under the bonnet (this is a tortuous motoring analogy, isn't it) and give the outfit a full service.
This means altering the style of play, the over reliance on Zamora, and finding the players to fit an evolving system. It's the sort of job that should have been done two years ago.

WAFR: You have perhaps one of the oldest squads in the Premier League at the moment, are there enough younger players coming through the ranks or will there be enough investment in the team in order to start replacing some of your ageing stars?
The club has quietly acquired some bright young talent. 17 year old Kerim Frei is Steed Malbranque crossbred with the hare from a greyhound track. On the fringes we also have highly rated Tom Donegan, special one ninja Marcel Gecov and the raw but promising Pajtim Kasami. In the distant future, look out for centre-half Dan Burn and striker Marcello 'Delboy' Trotta.
Our U18s are top of their Academy League, the U15s are winning and we've probably got an U6months who are working on their dribbling. For the first time since Sean Davis came through the ranks there's a steady stream of potential first-teamers.

WAFR: You are back in the Europa League this season, a competition many Spurs fans are regarding as an obstructive non event – is there a similar feeling at Fulham?
No, far from it. The Europa League has given us some remarkable memories. If we get through the group stage, away support will be better in Europe than it is for some domestic games.
As I write this before the Wislaw Krakow game, fans are genuinely excited at the prospect of giving diver Nunez a rough time while also working out train timetables from Amsterdam to Enschede.
Let's put it in perspective: for some of us a European tour always used to mean Newport County away.

WAFR: You signed Ruiz in the transfer window, a player that Spurs had been keeping tabs on for a while, what has his impact been? Have you seen £10.6m worth of talent from him yet?
Before his goal against Everton he was generally regarded as a strolling L'Oreal ad.
That extraordinary chip over Tim Howard was a finish of enormous bravery, however. If the ball had simply lobbed into the keeper's arms he would have looked foolish. To do what he did showed remarkable confidence in his own ability.
As he ran to the Riverside stand people were shouting 'did you see that?' and 'oooh, look at his hair!' At £10.6m I think eez wurz eet.

WAFR: Who are going to be your key players this season?
The spine of the team is crucial. From back to front, Schwarzer, Hangeland, Murphy and Zamora hold the key. No change there, then.

WAFR: What is your assessment of the Spurs team this year?
The game against QPR seemed to typify Spurs. Glorious when going forward but also with a hint of vulnerability and a suggestion that shoulders can droop when it doesn't go quite to plan.
You also tried a little too much of the Harlem Globetrotters stuff at 2-0; all those extravagant flicks and backheels were hugely entertaining but at the expense of the simple pass.
There's no reason to doubt that a top four finish is possible although I think that's because, outside of Manchester, standards haven't risen greatly in the Premiership this year.

WAFR: What is your score prediction for Sundays game?
Well, at least it'll be a decent game. This is the match that's a response to the parallel universe where Stoke are always playing Wolves.
This really could be something daft like 3-3.

WAFR: And finally I must ask, how is Michael Jackson?
Still gazing at the Thames with that strange goalkeeper's hunch and microphone welded to his fist. Personally I think he looks more like Colonel Gaddafi on a karaoke night.

Prolific Fulham are close to knockout

Fulham 4 - 1 Wisla Krakow

Fulham edged closer to the Europa League knock-out stages by securing an impressive 4-1 home victory in a tempestuous encounter against Wisla Krakow last night.

The Londoners dominated the Group K tie from the offset as they avenged their controversial 1-0 defeat in Poland two weeks ago, while also extending their unbeaten home record in Europe to 22 matches.

With in excess of 6,000 fans cheering on Wisla, there was a tense atmosphere at Craven Cottage due to Polish fans peppering the home end and a smoke bomb being let off.

Damien Duff handed Fulham an early lead by tucking away Andrew Johnson's low cross, but Andraz Kirm equalised with a deflection off John Arne Riise.

Johnson put Fulham in control with goals in the 30th and 57th minutes before sub Steve Sidwell wrapped it up late on.

Johnson: Fulham will be ready for Spurs

Andrew Johnson insists Fulham's players will be ready to go straight back into battle and face Tottenham in Sunday's London derby.

Spurs rested a number of key players for their Europa League match on Thursday, while Fulham fielded a strong side and were rewarded with a 4-1 win against Wisla Krakow.

It means that whereas Fulham's stars must play two games in less than three days, their opponents this weekend will have benefited from a break.

"It's always going to be tough, but we've got great medical staff around us," said Johnson.

"Tottenham played as well and rested more players than we did, but we're professional footballers and we'll all be ready for Sunday.

"We can't really use midweek games as an excuse. We're all fit lads. We stepped up [against Wisla] and I'm sure the boys will step up again on Sunday."

Johnson's two brilliant goals saw off Wisla and left Fulham close to securing their place in the next stage of the competition they reached the final of in 2010.

And the striker, who says ongoing contract talks are "coming along nicely", rates his stunning volley against the Polish champions as one of his best ever strikes.

"I was delighted to see it go in. It's up there in my top goals," he declared.

"It was probably as clean a strike as I'll ever hit. It was a great ball in from Danny Murphy, a little bit behind me, and it always looks nice when it hits the post and goes in."

Lawro predicts Spurs to beat Fulham

BBC football pundit Mark Lawrenson has predicted that Tottenham Hotspur will beat Fulham on Sunday.

He told BBC Sport Online: "Fulham had a good win at Wigan last week and had a bit more of a goal threat away from home than usual.

"This can be a funny fixture – there have been some mad results, with the Cottagers scoring four times in the first half in the FA Cup last season and Heurelho Gomes being badly at fault for a couple of goals in 2008 – but I'm still backing Tottenham to come out on top.

"I've always said that they are the team most likely to finish fourth this season but they might be thinking they can finish third with the way they are playing at the moment.

"As a five, the Spurs midfield and Rafael van der Vaart were absolutely brilliant against QPR on Sunday.

"Scott Parker is their insurance policy, which is great for Luka Modric because he can just go and play. Then you have Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale with unbelievable pace down the wing and the cleverness of Van der Vaart.

"Up front, Emmnauel Adebayor is still playing like he is in his honeymoon period, which has lasted a lot longer at Tottenham than it has done anywhere else. That says a lot about the way Harry Redknapp manages.

"Tottenham have been to Russia and back in the build up for a Europa League tie in midweek but many of their first-choice players were left at home so it should not affect them too much.

"Redknapp did not travel because of heart surgery but he hopes to be back in the dugout at Craven Cottage. Fingers crossed he will be all right and make a swift recovery.
"Prediction: 1-2."

Dempsey- Revenge not the spur

Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey insists three points rather than revenge was the motivating factor after Thursday night's 4-1 Europa League win over Wisla Krakow.

"It was to get the points," the United States international said. "[Revenge] was a bonus, showing the team what kind of quality we do have."

He added: "I thought we did that and the most important thing is that we got the points to help us get out the group stage. It was a good game. We would have preferred not to have conceded and kept a clean sheet.

"It was good for some players to get some goals and some assists, which I think will help us going forward.

"At home we always try and take the game to our opponents. I think we play a good style of football. We had good movement in the midfield and up front, while our outside backs were overlapping so we had chances and our players stepped up for us."

You could say we were very efficient because normally we create eight or nine chances and we score one goal and today we were different."

Schwarzer: Spurs is a big game for Fulham

"Tottenham is a big game for us"

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is looking forward to taking on London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday at Craven Cottage and admits it will be tough to claim the three points.

The Whites usually play a weakened team in the Europa League however they fielded a strong team for their 4-1 win over Group K rivals Wisla Krakow.

The north London club, however, will have players returning after they were rested for their Europa League Group A defeat at Rubin Kazan.

"Everyone loves playing the big games and Tottenham is a big game for us and it will be a tough game as well," he told London24.

The Australian international insisted revenge was not the motivation for the Whites against Wisla Krakow.

The west London club had Mousa Dembele sent off in the first leg after Gervasio Nunez theatrically fell to the ground after a push by the Belgian.

"Revenge wasn't the motivation," Schwarzer added. "We set about our game with a confidence and self belief to get three points.

"We were a different class to them and we deserved to win."

His words were echoed by midfielder Clint Dempsey who was only motivated by getting the win.

"It was to get the points," the United States international said. "Revenge was a bonus, showing the team what kind of quality we do have.

I thought we did that and the most important thing is that we got the points to help us get out the group stage."

Will European outings give Spurs the edge over Fulham?

Tottenham may be rueing their decidedly inconvenient and ultimately disappointing trip to Russia this week, but their next top-flight opponents are being even more distracted by the Europa League this season.

Indeed, when it comes to using exploits on the continent as an excuse for fatigue, Fulham certainly have more justification than Spurs.

Unlike Tottenham, the Cottagers had the luxury of being at home last night, hosting Wisla Krakow.

However, that was their 12th game in the Europa League already, and their 23rd match of a campaign which began all the way back on June 30 in the early qualifying rounds.

Meanwhile, as Tottenham's first team were being rested yesterday with Sunday's London derby in mind, Martin Jol was fielding a virtually full-strength side to secure an important 4-1 win, which took his side second in Group K.

Andy Johnson, Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy were all withdrawn in the second half, but there is little doubt that Tottenham will be the fresher team this weekend.

Of course, entry into the early stages of the Europa League was Fulham's prize for winning the Fair Play League last season – a dubious honour which was nearly bestowed on Tottenham, giving the Lilywhites all the motivation they needed to finish fifth in May and enter the tournament at a later stage.

Fulham's new boss Jol is no stranger to Europe – indeed he memorably learned of his sacking at Spurs during a Uefa Cup clash with Getafe in October 2007.

However, the balancing act between continental commitments and domestic affairs has not been easy for him so far this season, and the Cottagers' league form has suffered as a result.

Jol was a popular choice to replace the cautious Mark Hughes, particularly given the exciting brand of football the Dutchman was known for in his days across London at Tottenham.

However, a 6-0 home win over local rivals QPR and a fightback from 2-0 down to earn a draw with Manchester City are the main highlights of a fairly uninspiring start to the league campaign.

To their credit, Fulham remain the only side to take points off City, but they lie in 15th place, four points above the relegation zone, with just two wins from their opening 10 league matches.

The danger men are all familiar names. Johnson's brace against Krakow last night took his tally to 11 goals in all competitions, and he hit a hat-trick in the derby victory over QPR at the Cottage.

Zamora has five goals to his name and Clint Dempsey scored his third league goal of the season in a 2-0 win at Wigan on Saturday, while the attack-minded ex-Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise joined Fulham over the summer.

However, record signing Bryan Ruiz is taking his time to find his feet in the Premier League after making a £10.6million move from FC Twente.

He has just one league goal so far, but Jol was encouraged by his delicate chip over Tim Howard in a 3-1 defeat to Everton last month.

"You could say that his goal against Everton was a sign for everybody else – I knew what he is capable of. He has an excellent quality of setting up goals and can also score goals," said Jol.

"It can take time to settle in. There was too much pressure. He needs to know that it is not only about scoring and setting up goals.

"He is a midfielder, not a striker. In Holland, he scored more goals than any other midfield player.

"When he came here, people thought he was a striker but he can play out wide or as an offensive midfielder.

"He's not a pacy player. It is about his vision and his ability to play the killer pass. He can fill the gap between Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson and my midfield."

The effect of last night's Europa League fixtures should give Spurs an advantage on Sunday, but they are likely to need it if their record in this fixture is anything to go by.

The Lilywhites have only won two of their league trips to the Cottage since Fulham joined the top flight in 2001.

And, while one of those came last season in October, that success was then eclipsed by the 4-0 defeat on the Thames in the FA Cup three months later.

That mauling will be uppermost in Tottenham's minds as they return this weekend to face their old manager and a host of former players – Murphy, Zamora and Stephen Kelly, while Simon Davies is out of action through injury.

Harry Redknapp will miss the trip to Craven Cottage as he continues to recover from a minor heart operation, but the Spurs boss is expected to return after the international break.

The verdict: Having already won away at Wolves, Wigan and Blackburn, it could be suggested that Spurs should beat 15th-placed Fulham here - as they did last season.

However, anyone who witnessed the FA Cup tie at Craven Cottage last season will be very wary of this fixture, and so are we – 2-2

Bobby Zamora makes Fulham fitness vow ahead of Spurs showdown

BOBBY Zamora insists Fulham will be fighting fit and raring to go against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Spurs left most of their first team at home for last night's 4,000-mile round trip to Russia, while the Whites fielded a near full-strength XI in their Europa League clash against Wisla Krakow.

However, the England striker says they will be back up to speed for the Craven Cottage clash against his former club in two days time.

He said: "We'll be ready for Sunday. We're at home, which is massive as well. We've got a great record here.

"The last couple of years we've put in some good performances against them. It would be nice to win but it's going to be a tough game. They're a great side with some top players."

Fulham strike duo delighted with win over Wisla Krakow

"We'd worked on that free-kick for the first time the other day. It worked brilliantly"

Fulham stars Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora were delighted with the manner of the Whites' 4-1 win over Wisla Krakow in their UEFA Europa League Group K clash last night.

The England internationals combined for the west London club's third goal, which was straight off the training ground.

"It was a well-worked free-kick (that made it 3-1), something we'd been practising on, and I was delighted to get it over the keeper," Johnson said.

"The main thing was that the team got the win they needed because we lost at their place the other week, which was a bit disappointing.

"I was delighted, the first one was a great ball from Danny Murphy and probably as clean a strike as I've hit in my career."

Fulham gained some form of revenge over the Polish side, after losing 1-0 in Krakow a fortnight ago.

"A good performance and a few goals for the boys which is nice," Zamora added.

"Some good goals, some well-worked goals, I'm pleased because AJ's on fire."

The England striker also expressed his delight at Fulham's perfectly executed free-kick.

"We'd worked on that free-kick for the first time the other day. It worked brilliantly," he added.

Best bets: Fulham v Tottenham, Premier League

Fancy a flutter on Sunday's London derby? Here are our top tips as Fulham host Tottenham at Craven Cottage.

Following their excellent win over QPR last weekend, a buoyant Spurs side make the short journey to Craven Cottage on Sunday, having enjoyed a rare double over their London rivals last term.

Not surprisingly, given their victory at Loftus Road (and Fulham's worrying league position), it's Spurs who kick off as Paddy Power's 13/10 favourites.

The home side's odds of 12/5 (Partybets) are a reflection of their poor form – they've managed just one home win this season – and the fact that they've scored only once against Tottenham in their last five league meetings.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that honours have been more-or-less equally shared in this fixture since the pair were reunited in the top flight a decade ago, a statistic which adds appeal to Victor Chandler's 12/5 odds for a draw.

Harry Redknapp's men will head to Fulham in a confident mood, however, as they've lost only once away from home and have a game in hand on all of the sides above them in the league table – Ladbrokes' 6/1 for them to win 1-0 cannot be discounted.

Although Fulham have scored 10 goals at home this season, when Skybet give Spurs an artificial one-goal deficit and price them at 10/3 to win, shrewd punters may be inclined to take advantage and combine the wager with another.

For instance, bet365 post a hefty-looking 9/4 against Tottenham retaining a clean sheet, while Stan James post 3/1 in favour of them enjoying a one-goal margin of victory.

There's little to choose between the sides in the first goal market where Spurs are 4/5 with Sportingbet to open the scoring, while Gareth Bale has been well-backed to grab the game's first goal – he's 15/2 with Boylesports.

Betdaq chalk 8/1 against it finishing 2-1 to Spurs, and Betfred post a market-leading 6/1 for a 1-1 draw.

However, the majority of punters anticipate another Tottenham win and Totesport have 10/1 marked in favour of a 2-0 away success.

I won't be blown aside by Gareth Bale's 'whoosh', insists Mousa Dembele

Sweet feet and fleet feet are set to go toe to toe at Craven Cottage on Sunday and that clash of styles between Fulham's Mousa Dembele and Gareth Bale, of Tottenham, should ensure the season's trend of enthralling derbies is maintained.

When considering current individual contributions to the greater good of the Premier League, there are surely few more exciting players to watch than Dembele, whose mesmerising close control makes you wonder if the ball is stitched to his boots, and Bale, the winger whose speed and vision set White Hart Lane alight against Queens Park Rangers last weekend.

And if Fulham boss Martin Jol chooses to face his former club with Dembele starting on the right wing rather than his alternative position in the hole behind striker Bobby Zamora, the Belgium international will be staring Bale straight in the eyes.

Having watched enthralled, just like the rest of us, as Bale completed a wonderful seven-pass move for Spurs's third goal against QPR, Dembele today revealed his eagerness to go up against the Welshman.

The 24-year-old, exactly two years to the day Bale's senior, said: "I like to challenge myself, to compare myself against the best. I've watched Bale a few times. He is different from me. He is more like a player who goes 'whoosh', who is very fast.

"But I saw his second goal on Sunday, and whenever I see something good that another player does, then I will think about it and try to learn from it.

"Nobody is perfect. Even Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo can sometimes look like players from League One. But the best players in the world always try to learn from somebody else.

"That is why I like to challenge myself against a big team like Tottenham. It is not just Bale, they have a lot of really great players."

Like Scott Parker, who outshone even Bale against Rangers and who on Sunday will engage in an intriguing midfield duel with former Spurs player Danny Murphy.

Having been present on the pitch to witness the veteran Fulham captain inspire only a second League win of the season against Wigan on Saturday - when his raking first-half pass allowed Zamora to set up Clint Dempsey for the vital opening goal - Dembele is backing his man.

He said: "Everybody knows Danny is a very important player for us. He can pick the right passes. He has enough experience, so he knows exactly what he has to do."

Dembele, himself, added Fulham's second goal at the DW Stadium, the surprise being it was his first strike of the season.

The contribution Dembele has made to the Fulham cause since Mark Hughes, Jol's predecessor, bought him from Dutch Eredivisie champions AZ Alkmaar for £5million in the summer of 2010 has been immense.

The hours Dembele devoted as a youngster to practising on basketball courts and inside the family home near the Bercham district of Antwerp, testing the patience of a mother who had to sweep up the resulting shards of shattered crockery, enables him to twist and turn with the balanced dexterity of a slalom skier.

In the wake of the Wigan victory, Jol said: "Mousa is so gifted. He has all the talent in the world. But the next step is for him to score [more] goals."

Dembele accepts that flashy footwork on the pitch is not enough and his overall contribution needs to embrace a better strike rate.

He said: "That is the thing I want to improve most, to score goals.

"For me, in the past, scoring has not always been the most important thing. My priorities have been to play well, to be important for the team.

"After that, I've always told myself that if I score, then that's just okay. But now I'm changing my thoughts and I want to score more goals. Every day in normal training I'm trying to score more. And after training I stay to practise my shooting as well."

One of Dembele's rare goals came at Craven Cottage back in January when Fulham thrashed Spurs 4-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Harry Redknapp was so impressed that in the summer he was reported to have made a tentative inquiry about the player.

Spurs are doing very nicely having banked 19 points from their last seven League games to go fifth in the table. But Dembele counters that form by pointing out how Fulham have turned the Cottage into a fortress which has borne witness to only one home defeat in domestic and European football this season.

Nicely rested after missing last night's Europa League tie against Wisla Krakow through suspension, Dembele said: "When I talk to my colleagues in the Belgium side - like Marouane Fellaini and Thomas Vermaelen - they all say they don't like to play at Fulham, that it is not easy to play against us at our place."

He has to hope that holds true for the Spurs players on Sunday, with Fulham only just clear of the relegation zone after a testing campaign.

But Dembele insists the team's lowly standing is a false one. He added: "We should be higher up. There has not been one team that we've played this season who were much better than us."

At the moment, there are not many attacking players much better than Dembele. And he can confirm that by out-whooshing Bale on Sunday.

AJ: Fulham's European assasin
by DAN on NOVEMBER 4, 2011

Andy Johnson just can't stop scoring in Europe. The Fulham striker, still banging in the goals as his contract negotiations with the club continue, rates his first goal in the 4-1 romp past Wisla Krakow as one of the best strikes of his career.

The 30 year-old says Fulham were delighted to win so convincingly at Craven Cottage last night – with the victory avenging the earlier defeat in Krakow and getting Fulham's qualifying bid back on track.

We were happy to get the three points to give us a great chance of qualifying. We've got two big games coming up against Odense and FC Twente, so if we can get another win, I'm sure we can progress. I'm pleased [with my own performance], but the main thing is that the team got the win we needed because we were quite disappointed to lose at their place the other week.

The first goal was a great ball from Danny Murphy and it was probably as clean a strike as I've hit in my career. It was a little bit behind me, but I hit it and it always looks nice when it hits the post and goes in. It's probably up there in my top two goals, but the main thing is that we got the three points and we just need to kick on now.

The second was a well worked free-kick that we'd been practicing and I was delighted to get it over the goalkeeper.

Johnson is pleased that with two games left – against Odense and group leaders FC Twente – Fulham's fate is squarely in their own hands.

I don't think anyone likes going into games waiting on other results. You want the incentive of it being in your own hands. Now it's up to us.

It's a massive competition. We got to the Final a couple of years ago. Everyone in and around Fulham knows how important it is to the Club and it's up to us to do well so I'm delighted to keep scoring and hopefully I can carry it on this Sunday.

It was a great game and a great atmosphere. The Fulham fans were top class like they always are, week-in, week-out and they played their part.

Johnson dismissed any worries that Fulham will be jaded after their European exploits when they face Tottenham, played a largely second string side in Russia last night, in Sunday's London derby.

We have great medical staff around us and we have a great recovery squad and a great system at the Club. Tottenham have played as well although I'm sure they rested a few more than we did, but we're professional footballers and we'll all be ready for Sunday. We're all fit lads so we can't use mid-week games as an excuse.

Week-in week-out we play in the Premier League and ultimately we want to stay and do well in it so that's always the main priority. The Europa League is a bonus, but we got to the Final two years ago so I don't see why we can't do it again.

It's been a great week for the guys. We got our first away win which was important and the three points in the Premier League bumped us up the table and relieved a bit of pressure, especially after the unfortunate loss we had last week against Everton. But we bounced back well. We played well last Saturday. We were a little bit lucky but we got the three points and it's taken us to a big game tonight and the boys stepped up again. And I'm sure they'll step up again on Sunday.

Philippe Senderos is also absent with a similar problem, while Simon Davies and Orlando Sa are out.

Tottenham defender William Gallas came through his comeback match against Rubin Kazan unscathed and is now in contention.

Midfielder Luka Modric should be fit despite a groin problem, but Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and Niko Kranjcar are still out.

MATCH PREVIEW
To me, this match is the weekend's most attractive-looking fixture in the Premier League as the one thing I am expecting from it is goals.

Both sides have attacking players in top form. Fulham's Andrew Johnson scored two superb goals on Thursday in the Europa League clash with Wisla Krakow, and Clint Dempsey is now just one goal short of breaking Brian McBride's record for scoring the most Premier League goals by an American.

For Tottenham, Rafael van der Vaart simply cannot stop scoring at the moment and they carry a goal threat all over the pitch.

However, both teams will have to find a way past two of the Premier League's most experienced and impressive goalkeepers. Tottenham's Brad Friedel will be playing in his 276th consecutive Premier League match, while Mark Schwarzer has played 496 games in English league football.

Fulham boss Martin Jol was a hugely popular figure during his three years managing Tottenham and came within a whisker of leading them to the Champions League until that infamous stomach bug struck his team on the last day of the 2005-06 season.

Jol's successor at Spurs, Harry Redknapp, underwent heart surgery this week and it seems unlikely that he will be at the game. His players will be keen to get a result to help aid his recovery and the form book says they will be favourites given that they are unbeaten since those two defeats to the Manchester clubs at the start of the season.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Fulham's last league win over Tottenham came almost three years ago (2-1 in November 2008). They have managed just one victory in their last 10 league matches with Spurs, but thrashed them 4-0 in last season's FA Cup.

This is the 76th meeting between the sides. Tottenham have won 37 and Fulham 12, with 26 draws.

Fulham boss Martin Jol managed Tottenham from November 2004 to October 2007. He took charge of 148 games in all competitions, winning 67, losing 43 and drawing 38. In his first full season in charge, he led Spurs to fifth place, their highest league position since 1990.

Fulham
Fulham beat Wigan 2-0 away from home last Saturday despite having only 38% of possession and half as many shots as their opponents.
Clint Dempsey's goal against Wigan was his 36th in the Premier League, which equals the most by an American (Brian McBride also scored 36 goals).
Fulham have only won two of their last 22 London derbies, but one of them came in their most recent attempt at Craven Cottage when they beat QPR 6-0.

Tottenham
Tottenham have scored at least twice in each of their last seven league matches.
Having lost their opening two league matches, Spurs have won six and drawn one of their last seven, a run that started when Scott Parker made his debut for the club.
If fit, Luka Modric will make his 100th Premier League appearance for Tottenham.
Rafael van der Vaart is bidding to become only the seventh player in Tottenham's history to score in six or more consecutive league matches. Garth Crooks is the last player to achieve the feat between December 1984 and January 1985.

Andrew Johnson's two-goal salvo against Wisla Krakow on Thursday night took the striker's tally to 11 goals in all competitions this season and helped Fulham move a step closer to qualifying from the Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League.

Johnson's first of the evening was a stunning volley from a Danny Murphy delivery, his second was a far more delicate strike – chipping a fine finish over Sergei Pareiko after a crafty set-piece routine.

"We were happy to get the three points to give us a great chance of qualifying," assessed Johnson after the match. "We've got two big games coming up against Odense and FC Twente, so if we can get another win, I'm sure we can progress.

"I'm pleased, but the main thing is that the team got the win we needed because we were quite disappointed to lose at their place the other week.

"The first goal was a great ball from Danny Murphy and it was probably as clean a strike as I've hit in my career. It was a little bit behind me, but I hit it and it always looks nice when it hits the post and goes in. It's probably up there in my top two goals, but the main thing is that we got the three points and we just need to kick on now.

"The second was a well worked free-kick that we'd been practicing and I was delighted to get it over the goalkeeper."

The victory puts Fulham and FC Twente clear of both Odense and Wisla Krakow in Group K and certainly alleviates the pressure going into the final two game of the Group Stage.

"I don't think anyone likes going into games waiting on other results," explained Johnson. "You want the incentive of it being in your own hands. Now it's up to us.

"It's a massive competition. We got to the Final a couple of years ago. Everyone in and around Fulham knows how important it is to the Club and it's up to us to do well so I'm delighted to keep scoring and hopefully I can carry it on this Sunday.

"It was a great game and a great atmosphere. The Fulham fans were top class like they always are, week-in, week-out and they played their part."

Attentions now turn to Sunday's Barclays Premier League encounter with Tottenham for what will be a stern test of the squad's powers of recuperation. However Johnson is certain that the Whites will be fresh-legged for Spurs.

"We have great medical staff around us and we have a great recovery squad and a great system at the Club. Tottenham have played as well although I'm sure they rested a few more than we did, but we're professional footballers and we'll all be ready for Sunday. We're all fit lads so we can't use mid-week games as an excuse.

"Week-in week-out we play in the Premier League and ultimately we want to stay and do well in it so that's always the main priority. The Europa League is a bonus, but we got to the Final two years ago so I don't see why we can't do it again.

"It's been a great week for the guys. And I'm sure they'll step up again on Sunday."

Dempsey: Fulham can be a top ten side
by DAN on NOVEMBER 4, 2011

Clint Dempsey feels Fulham should be back amongst the Premier League's top ten come the end of the season.

The Cottagers recorded top ten finishes under Roy Hodgson and Mark Hughes but have endured a stop-start beginning to Martin Jol's tenure at the club. The American midfielder thinks there is enough quality in the club's squad to propel them up the table, however:

We are where we are and I think we need to get on a streak and get some wins in a row. We will be fine. We have the quality to be a top half team. The play we have shown we should be higher.

Dempsey doesn't feel that playing so soon after a big European night against Wisla Krakow should hinder the side, either.

You've just got to see it as a positive. We have a good squad and a lot of depth, you can rotate if needs be. And, if you have a bad game, there are a lot of games in quick succession so you have a chance to right your wrongs.

It's always good to look ahead to the next game and in your career you want to play in as many games as you can. I enjoy playing in every game I can possibly play in because you can't play forever, so you want to maximise your career.

The Texan, who was this week voted as the US Player of the Year for the second time, has fond memories of making his debut against Spurs.

Yes, I came on and I think I stole the ball and passed it to Murphy. He played it to Montella who got fouled, which resulted in a penalty, that he scored. We drew the game. That was my first memory and it was great to get in and play against a team like Tottenham.

Home Advantage
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Players/Dempsey/DempseyShotNews.jpg)

Fulham midfielder and US international star Clint Dempsey speaks to the press ahead of Sunday's Barclays Premier League encounter against Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage.

Q: With Tottenham Hotspur visiting the Cottage this weekend, do you remember making your debut for Fulham against Spurs?

A: Yes, I came on and I think I stole the ball and passed it to Murphy. He played it to Montella who got fouled, which resulted in a penalty, that he scored. We drew the game. That was my first memory and it was great to get in and play against a team like Tottenham.

Q: After the Europa League games you always seem to have a game against a side that doesn't play in Europe. Does it help this weekend that you're against Tottenham who have had a long trip?

A: Yes, it will make them make decisions with regards to who plays but at the end of the day it's same situation as us. They have good medical staff as well and they can monitor their players and make sure they keep playing at high performance levels.

It won't affect them too much. The benefit we have is we have a home game and we don't have to travel which wears on you. Hopefully we can use that to our advantage.

Q: Having played in Europe again on Thursday with Tottenham on Sunday, is that the down side? There seems to be fixture congestion?

You've just got to see it as a positive. We have a good squad and a lot of depth, you can rotate if needs be. And, if you have a bad game, there are a lot of games in quick succession so you have a chance to right your wrongs.

It's always good to look ahead to the next game and in your career you want to play in as many games as you can. I enjoy playing in every game I can possibly play in because you can't play forever, so you want to maximise your career.

Q: One of your best performances of the season as a team came against Manchester City which was after a Europa League game. Was that an important performance and prove to the squad how good you can be this season?

A: We dug deep and you saw the character of our team. We went 2-0 down and conceded in the first minute of the second half against a team like City. Teams could have crumbled but we got the result and looked like a team searching for the win; not a team that was just happy with a draw.

That was a key game in our season as was Wigan away last weekend. In the second half [against Wigan] we didn't have the best performance in terms of keeping the ball and making chances.

We dug deep and limited their chances, and we were lucky as they hit the bar and post. We grinded out a result and in my mind these games show we have character and heart.

Q: Given the tough games you have had and the results do you feel you are below where you should be [in the Barclays Premier League table] given how you have played in the Premier League?

A: I think so. The play we have shown we should be higher. We are where we are and I think we need to get on a streak and get some wins in a row. We will be fine. We have the quality to be a top half team.

Balance

There's a bit of noise about how the defence isn't so good now.

People are really pleased with AJ's form.

Under Roy Hodgson we never had these problems in defence.

But the forwards really suffered.

All of the above is not a coincidence!

Under Hodgson we rarely committed men ahead of the ball.  The back door was always being watched, usually by at least five players. So if we lost possession we still had our shape.  It was mad to see and felt a bit like overkill, but a testament to all the hours of training the team put in.

Now is different. At one point Riise was a legitimate left-winger. Clint Dempsey doesn't really defend like he used to (playing that slanting in role he's all over the show, which isn't good for structured defending). Duff works hard but in the midfield there's a new balance: defence is important, but it's not all powerful like it was. Before the midfield could attack but had to be careful. Now they always attack but try to be careful if they possibly can.

It's a big difference.

So the defence looks much shakier and the forwards look better!

More fun but less 'good', perhaps.

There's always a balance. Stack the stones high and you might have a higher tower, but it might fall down in a mess, too.  This is the situation we face.  You can build a big tower against Wisla Krakow, but against the better teams it might be an idea to add a few more stones at the bottom so it's harder to knock down.

Dembele hopes for repeat performance
by DAN on NOVEMBER 4, 2011

Moussa Dembele is hoping he can replicate last season's form against Tottenham ahead of Sunday's London derby.

The Belgian forward scored a magnificent individual goal as Fulham recorded a memorable FA Cup victory over Spurs at Craven Cottage last January and, after being suspended for last night's vital European win over Wisla Krakow, is confident Fulham can continue their excellent home form.

Last year we won against Tottenham and I think they all know in their heads that it is not easy to play against us at Craven Cottage and that is definitely to our advantage.

I talk with my other Belgium colleagues in the international team and they always say they don't like to play against Fulham. They don't like to play Fulham away; it is a really difficult place.

Dembele will head into the televised clash full of confidence after scoring the crucial second goal that secured victory at Wigan last weekend and admits he is trying to find the net more frequently.

I was very pleased because it was the first goal of the season for me and the thing I want to improve the most is to score more goals. For me, in the past, it [scoring] was never the most important thing. I want to play well and help the team. I want to perform for the team and if I score it is great, that's my kind of thinking.

The 24 year-old is relishing the opportunity of testing himself against a formidable Spurs side again.

I like to challenge myself and compare myself with the best," Dembele explained. "They [Spurs] have a lot of great players there – it's not only Bale.  I like to challenge myself against a big team like that. Tottenham have big players, and I prefer that.

I think the best players in the world learn something from everybody because you cannot be born with everything. Even Messi may look at a player who plays in League 1 or something and if he does something on his own then yes you can learn from him.

If I see someone who does something good, even if it is Bale, I look at it and try to learn something from it for sure.

Sunday Showdown
(http://www.fulhamfc.com/Images/MainNews/NewsPages/Players/Dembele/DembeleWiganCelebNews.jpg)

Fulham will be looking to make it three victories in eight days when they challenge Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon (KO 4pm).

Having extended their unbeaten home record in European to 22 games on Thursday night with a 4-1 victory over Wisla Krakow, Mousa Dembele is hoping Fulham can make the most of home advantage in the Barclays Premier League this weekend.

"Last year we won against Tottenham and I think they all know in their heads that it is not easy to play against us at Craven Cottage and that is definitely to our advantage," said Dembele.

"I talk with my other Belgium colleagues in the international team and they always say they don't like to play against Fulham. They don't like to play Fulham away; it [Craven Cottage] is a really difficult place."

Dembele scored the decisive second goal at the DW Stadium to secure Fulham a 0-2 victory over Wigan last weekend and the gifted attacking midfielder was evidently delighted to have put the finishing touch on an impressive all-round performance.

"I was very pleased because it was the first goal of the season for me and the thing I want to improve the most is to score more goals," said Dembele.

"For me, in the past, it [scoring] was never the most important thing. I want to play well and help the team. I want to perform for the team and if I score it is great, that's my kind of thinking."

If Fulham are to head into the international break with their tails up, they will have to overcome a Spurs side packed full of world class performers. Dembele for one, is clearly relishing the challenge that awaits.

"I like to challenge myself and compare myself with the best," Dembele explained. "They [Spurs] have a lot of great players there – it's not only Bale.  I like to challenge myself against a big team like that. Tottenham have big players, and I prefer that.

"I think the best players in the world learn something from everybody because you cannot be born with everything. Even Messi may look at a player who plays in League 1 or something and if he does something on his own then yes you can learn from him.

"If I see someone who does something good, even if it is Bale, I look at it and try to learn something from it for sure."

Who put the ball in Carlisle's net?

A special guest will be making an appearance on the Craven Cottage pitch this Sunday.  Former Fulham midfielder, and the scorer of one of Fulham's most memorable goals, Rodney McAree, will be stepping out onto the pitch at half-time.

Supporters will fondly remember his 25-yard strike away at Carlisle United in 1997 which earned the Whites a 2-1 win and helped Fulham on their way to securing promotion to Division Two.

Sunday's matchday programme will also carry an exclusive interview with McAree, who is certain to receive fantastic reception.
