Robbie Savage, BBC Final ScoreSunderland 0-1 Fulham

"Berbatov is too good for Fulham. With that penalty he stopped then sidefooted it nonchalantly into the corner. What a player he is."

What an absolute plank Savage is. No player is too good for us.

Sunderland are squeezing us really well and our passing has been poor. Need some composure in there.

Silly boy Phil, no need for that at all. Soft but a penalty, I'd like to see the refs be a bit more consistent. Very disappointing as we were running away with the game. Having said that we've comfortably defended against them so far.
The positives are that the Ruiz-Berba partnership is working finally, Berba not dropping so deep and allowing Ruiz the freedom to express himself. I see us scoring again.

Only time we looked in trouble was the penalty. But not sure we will have such an easy second half. Very little in control in midfield. We need more control and more passing that hurts them instead of just keeping the ball. Odd half to say the least. Dejagah our most dangerous player.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Fulham match thread
Post by: deeffc on March 02, 2013, 03:55:54 PM
I think the difference is usually the defender is in the right position goal side, and holds their ground. In this case Senderos is caught out and can't get to the ball. It's a penalty because he's making no effort to play the ball, he's just trying to prevent the striker getting to it. It's poor defending and Senderos consistently makes the same mistakes. Hearing he's being offered a new contract, no idea why.

Aside from that a really good first half, we're getting Berbatov back in the game now Ruiz is back and playing solid football.

On a postive note we will win this comfortably. Sunderland are a lot worse than I thought. If you take away the 3 points that they stole against us they would be in big trouble
Title: Re: Sunderland v Fulham match thread
Post by: Ruiz11 on March 02, 2013, 04:03:13 PM
On the plus side, Dejagah looks outstanding and with Ruiz dropping back into midfield to make a 4-2-3-1, we have an extra man in the middle, meaning Sunderland can't get the ball.

However, the goal seems to have knocked the stuffing out of us defensively: we look shaky all of a sudden and Marko's kicking is getting worse and worse.

At worst, he's a decent squad option, but with Hughes aging and at the moment only 3 centrebacks in the squad, we're not in the position to be shedding players in this position. Keep him, but we need a new centreback or two in the summer.

I'd blame Sidwell rather than Senderos there, Sidwell should have marked the scorer as Senderos was already really in position to back up Riether, perhaps Senderos could have cut it out better but if Sidwell was in position there wouldn't have been a problem. Got to blame Jol for allowing us to drop too deep though, when we did get a break there when ended up so stretched, rather than keeping the ball and controlling the game.

Mark Halsey just seems to make his decisions by trying to even everything out, he's had a mare today IMO.

Also the comments about how we've been to defensive, does it mean much to you that we ended up conceding that goal on the break when we committed men forwards?

Hangeland has been all over the place today.  Awful passing, diving into challenges that aren't necessary and being caught out of position, and charging forwards only to give the ball away and then jogging back.

I think the trouble was we ended up stretched as we lost our shape, if we keep the ball and the attack then the midfield is still in shape and the defense has time to close the space between themselves and our strikers, by dropping so deep when we lost the ball we then became so vulnerable to the break.

We should have beaten a very poor Sunderland side. One point closer to safety, but I cant wait until this season is over.

Dejagah was good again and Emanuelson very lively when he came on.

Feels like we're still missing something in centre midfield. Senderos will get alot of criticism, but we simply tried to defend the whole second half.

Duff was poor again, and Hangeland didnt have his best game. Still not convinced by the Ruiz and Berbatov partnership

We really were not that bad.  Reverse the situation and what would your opinion be if we had played liked sunderland have just done at home?  The game turned on a great save from Berba and them getting a lucky break at the other end to equalize.  No need to scapegoat Berba (really bizarre given he now has 10 goals for us this season) or Senderos as seems the usual thing to do if we don't win.

Oh come on this was two sides devoid of any confidence scrapping for a point. I don't enjoy watching Fulham when they play like this. A lot of walking around and standing still, misplaced passes and scrambling around in the penalty area trying to hold Sunderland to a point as if we were 3 divisions below them. Should have hammered them :/

Decent point but frustrating, we had the better chances and defended really well apart from Senderos's poor mistake. Sunderland by and large were poor. Should really have won this game.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Fulham match thread
Post by: Humbled on March 02, 2013, 05:03:24 PM
our lack of fire power through the centre at times means our right and left back push on at every oppotunity despite sometimes the positioning of the ball and players doesnt allow it... it worked for our 2nd goal but for their 2nd it didnt, Riise found himself in the striker role with no chance of getting back.

we have to become faster on the ball. Berba gets away with it cos of his brain and strength Ruiz doesnt and gets robbed of the ball ALOT and when Urby come on (and i would like to see him stat) he was robbed more than he should have been
Title: Re: Sunderland v Fulham match thread

At the risk of scapegoating, and I am a bit, Duff deserves to be dropped. He's just not effective on the left flank and Dejagah can't be dropped to accommodate him. Maybe Jol feels Emanuelson isn't fit enough or isn't adapted yet? He looked a little off the pace when he came on but he still posed far more threat than Duff.
Same team but with Emanuelson for Duff.

Dreadful? I found it an enticing game with good chances on both sides.

how can you be optimistic after a game like that? Total control, then throwing it away with mistake upon mistake.
When Sunderland got level, they were only putting 1 or 2 in the box for corners as they were settling for the point, and knew we wouldnt be any threat, and we werent. As soon as Sunderland got the second goal , they had control of the whole match.

Moans
Berbatov should have scored another two. The one on one should have been placed away from the keeper, and he decided to shoot from range because he had no pace.
Riise went forward and was in the Sunderland box when mignolet saved from Berbatov, took his time getting back and left us open to Sessegnons  shot.
Dont have confidence in Senderos, seems to be good at passing back to Schwarzer and not much else. But the pen was soft, and the ref only gave it to balance the books.

subs
Duff was anonymous until he came off. Emmanuelson looked better when he came on.
Karagounis was great first half, and is an insult to the man to mention him in the same sentence as his replacement. I dont get what Frimpong brings to the team, a diving header to give a corner away when in space, losing possession too often and a bit of handball.. Think he has been learning from the school of senderos.
Dejegah should have scored and Rodallega didnt have much time to do anything.

BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE
We're in the top 10 for the first time in a long time and the counter attack goal and the willingness to get forward was a delight to see. More consistency over 90 minutes instead of sitting back and more points will come.

What annoys me is that when we did break forward we made them look awful. But we are back to losing shape when our midfield try and support. Sorry but Ruiz behind Berbatov DOESN'T AND HASN'T WORKED. Pace wide and pace through the middle does work and would have done again today.

Swart back to his poor kicking, Frimpong awful and lucky not to give away handball and seem off the pace. Senderos his mistake a game usual.

But Dejagha continedues to look good. Players are there but we need a better formation and a striker playing as a striker

+1, sometimes while watching Duff I ask myself why did Fulham offered him an extension. The guy is 34 and very ineffective as a winger. He is too slow and has not made one single cross for many games. Emmanuelson looks very quick and full of desire...

Today we suffered from away game syndrome. We played for a point in the second half. Thankfully we got it.
I don't accept the Ruiz-Berba partnership doesn't work, to me it has worked well the past two games, and the formation works fairly well. Just need a better left winger as Duff is ineffective.

No he didn't,  he was caught on the ball far too often. I am a fan but two slow players, however talented make for a slow build up. How often did we have players in the area when needed. When we do support the forward we lose all shape. Just have to agree to disagree on this.

After we sold Dempsey and Dembele late in August and never replaced them in either window, our only goal this season was to stay in the league. We moved one point and one match closer to that today, and most of the table below us lost. I'm not going to sweat whether we should have nicked a match where we fell off so badly in the 2H.

We look like we're going to be safe and this summer should be very interesting.

Top 10 guys. Top 10. There were plenty, particularly the 'old guard' of this board, cracking whips that some of us might suggest we could reach the top 10 this season. It's on.

As far as the game goes...would have taken it before. Yes we could have won, but Sunderland will be saying the same and they were the home team.

Oh yes without doubt. Which is why it is frustrating when we are hanging on at the end. We are fine going foreward but we do the same thing each game. Break quickly then stop at the final third. The only time we didn't do that we scored.

Its a shame , cant believe that we lose 2 goals lead !
Very shaky in defense but the main problem is Senderos.
The guy  is very, very poor player but the his biggest problem is that is very stupid too !
After 2:0 we should have finish the halftime quiet , calm and careful! Only this !
And what did this fool ?!?!?! A very fool penalty that turn  back them to game!
Stupid idiot !
And for the second goal...he left the player he supposed to keep
2 points lost! In the most stupid way !

Oh, and Senderos' play was a foul ... which gets called about 1% of the time in the penalty area. Prototype make-up call, which was stupid because Dejagah was actually fouled (if not happy to go down).

Senderos is an oaf and I'm not thrilled to see him being run out there, but if refs call that a penalty consistently, you'll have multiple PKs a game for the rest of the season.

No, no. 11th is 'kings of the rabble'.....10th is 'dregs of the elite'.

Two already? I thought they broke from a big goal chance on our side.

+1

I will never understand why:
1. Senderos starts.
2. Emanuelson doesn't.

Dont worry about it too much. The ref gave the penalty for Sunderland as a payback for our penalty. I dont think the ref had a great game today, nevertheless, it was a stupid by Senderos to do what he did...

Yes, mate, I agree that the ref did it for the compensation BUT Senderos made it in the stupidest way, in front of  ref eyes !!! And its not for the first time he doing not only mistakes but STUPID THINGS  !
We lost 2 points because his stupidity !

And want to give my opinion that the comby Berba/Ruiz work for me . Brian is second in the team by creativity after Berba , and when they both are on the pitch its very difficult for the opposite team and Berba have chance to play  like a 9 , not like a AM.....we loosing his predatory instinct when playing him like AM to fill a gap .....just my opinion !

A Statto will tell us but we have led in so many games this season and have not won that it defy belief.  If we had won half of those we would be in a European place, which is what our quality of attacking deserves.

But whose fault is this:

The defence, the midfield not helping the defence enough, the system we are playing, Senderos, Hangeland, the manager, the fans, the owner or all of the above.
