Title: Match Thread
Post by: grandad on April 13, 2013, 03:34:43 PM
Seems like a replay of the Newcastle game. No attacking threat again. No pace in MF or the wings. It´s all Villa.

Had moments of decent passing and possession, but just chasing the ball now for the last 15 min, can hear the clock ticking.  Its only a matter of time for Villa.

It's been like the Newcastle game, just with a worse first half performance.  Only Schwarzer has stood out as doing anything good.

Nice play from Ruiz/Berba and Emmanuelson/Berba just then though.  First chance since probably the same point in last week's game :(

Game not really taken off yet. Feel we need to be a bit more adventurous and try and score. Berba coming too deep because he's getting no service.
Emanuelson with a much improved performance and fair play to him. It's interesting that whenever he gets the opportunity he's aiming to make forward central runs, almost like a poacher. Could get a goal from him.
Title: Re: Match Thread
Post by: Lighthouse on April 13, 2013, 03:51:25 PM
We have no intention of going forward in that first half. One player has the ball and gets No support. Our style of play away is just not worth seeing. Ruiz is not used where it hurts. Berbatov is too deep blah blah blah. Oh well so much for my prediction of a shock win. We will be lucky to see another chance go our way. Until we fall behind then we will.
Title: Re: Match Thread
Post by: grandad on April 13, 2013, 03:51:33 PM
We have at least got to give it a bit of a go . Urby & Manolev show no idea about driving forward. Ruiz cant do everything on his own. Berba is isolated.
Title: Re: Match Thread
Post by: Ferret on April 13, 2013, 03:55:17 PM
Urby showed what he can do when he gets out wide. We need to stretch the game width-wise and we might create more clear-cut chances.

I think Urby has been trying to drive forwards, and looks the most likely to, it just hasn't always been coming off.  Ruiz has been woeful though, and I'm usually a big fan - pushed off the ball all he time, easy passes misplaced, impossible passes attempted.

Ruiz looks like playing behind Emanuelson.
Things need to go back to normal with him behind Berbs.

I bet Ruiz is going to stay up second half.
Emanuelson on the wing
Berbs to stay much further up.
Karagounis needs to get more involved

I don't understand the decision to bring on manolev, surely moving richardson forward and bringing on riise would of been the better option? or even Frei? Manolev doesn't do it for me.

Oh dear! here we go again.
We try to play some tippy tappy passing in the middle of the pitch, we refuse to put the villa defense under pressure by actually being positive in and around their box and we try to keep the ball, only to give it away and hand chances on a plate for the opposition.

This will be 2 points dropped (providing Villa dont score). Villa are a poor side, but our over defensive tactics yet again away from home has cost us.

I still dont think Ruiz and Berbatov works as a striking partnership, ESPECIALLY when we have no pace on the wings.

Saying all that, Berbatov and Petric both missed fantastic chances to score.

Villa aren't a poor side at all. Benteke, Agbonlahor and Weimann is a lethal attacking trio. Defensively they aren't great though. Can't help but feel the loss of Duff and Dejagah has hampered us. Manolev looks every bit like a right back playing right wing and he never beats his man.

Nice to see Petric back but had Rodders missed that chance then he would be out on his ear. Still not sure why we don't play a forward alongside Berbatov. We play so deep with Ruiz not being used where it will hurt teams.

Agbonlahor didn't play, and that was one hell of a bonus imo.

There's nowhere near enough pace or drive in the tam.  Enoh provides some drive, but he's a bit too defensive to have any real impact up top - combine him with Kara and that'd be one hell of a player.  Ruiz, Berba and Petric are just too one paced to really function without either pacy wingers or someone driving through the middle.

Positives were Schwarzers first 80 mins (seriously, what happened with those punches in the last 10), Enoh again looked pretty decent and Senderos had another pretty comfortable game.
Negatives were definitely Duff's injury (unless it means Frei gets more gametime, but missing two first choice wingers isn't fun), Reither and Hangeland weren't as good as they have been recently and offensively in the first 40 minutes there was just nothing.

Negatives were definitely Duff's injury (unless it means Frei gets more gametime, but missing two first choice wingers isn't fun), Reither hasn't looked as good recently and offensively in the first 40 minutes there was just nothing.

Really missed Ashkan Dejagah today, and no one more than Sascha Riether. People really underestimate how important having Dejagah in front of him is to Riether's game.

Personally I don't mind Berba dropping into the hole from time to time. He can pick a decisive pass and create chances, but of course it only works if someone takes his place up top. Ruiz needs to do this as do the wingers. I'm wondering how Ruiz got 24 goals in the Eredivisie, he barely ever shoots. And he's a good finisher so it's frustrating.

So true. Ruiz has not taken a shot for good long time...

Sounds like we're commenting on a handful of chances??? Maybe it's me?, but I think we should be creating a lot more than what I heard GJ talking about... Too many times I hear its all about the opposing team, and us with the odd attack once in a while...

We are 3rd on in MOTD. Another good result I suppose.

True, we don't create enough considering we have Ruiz and Berba in our team.

I thought Richardson was good today, wouldn't mind him as our first choice left back for next season in fact I'd be happy if our back four is as started today next season.

I think our problem area right now is the wingers, Manolev looks like a right back and Emmanuelson flits in and out of the game. You can see his quality at times, but he's not quite got going. Dejagah of course has been a big loss, but I think we're in a bit of a difficult situation with them. We've got 3 promising young wingers in Kaca, Frei and to a lesser extent Mesca who I think Jol is relying on one of them to really break through and cement themselves a first team place. None of them have really done it yet and I don't think we can go into next season with only them 3, Duff and Dejagah as our wingers with the fill in players like Hugo and Richardson.

I'm very happy with the point, especially with Southampton and West Ham drawing.  We sounded much better in the 2nd Half (G. Jim).

We were much better in the second half.  I wonder what channel you were all watching on?  The Undertakers' Network?
Enoh was rock solid with a nice way of switching the direction of play.
Urbu had a very decent game.  In the first half he gathered the ball by the corner flag with his back to goal.  He turned on a sixpence, skinned the right back and laid the ball back on a silver platter for Berbatov to hit a goulash of a shot slow and wide of the post.  Most unusual.
In fact, Ruiz, Petric, Berbatov - all had good chances that they probably would have put away on most other days.  But, it certainly wasn't the bore fest most on here seem to have watched.
Berbatov?  Some of his lay-offs and passes were sublime.  Shame about his shooting boots.  Still worth the entrance price alone.
Villa weren't a bad young side either.  Their inexperience cost them the two points with panic in front of goal where cooler, older  heads might have prevailed.
One good point made earlier was about Schwartzer. He made two or three fantastic saves in the first half, another top set of finger tips in the second but then he looked like a Hackney Marshes keeper with two limp punches in the final ten minutes.
For the record, Hangeland made two more serious defensive errors from which they should have scored to Senderos's one small lapse.  Other than that, the handsome straight-eyed Swiss played well.
Oh yes, another very intelligent comment above was how useful Urbu's older brother looked at left back.  I think Riise might be toast next year.
Ruiz was Ruiz.  Brilliant one moment, poor the next.  He's still capable of turning matches around single-handedly though.
Finally, Manolev.  I would prefer not to see him play on the wing.  Her has a poor final ball and is not on the same wavelength as the rest of the team.  Still, he's new and probably doesn't speak much English, so I'll trust Jol's judgement more than I would mine.

Decent result, but like last week at Newcastle, we were too one dimensional up front.

Ruiz and Berba are too similar. There's no real penetration or runs from deep from both of them and that makes our attacking play too predictable, especially because we were playing without true wingers. We lacked pace, attacking runs and penetration.

Since we are home and dry now, i would like Jol to try Ruiz behind Berba and Rodallega or another 'running' forward. If we can combine the vision and creativity of Ruiz and Berba with pace and runs we can really improve!

I've never thought that much about Berbertov but viewed him form the side today instead of the Putney end, i was amazed how good his ball control was.
