who's nervous about this game?

Newcastle have had a poor start, ours hasn't been brilliant, have we change our poor away form, we've won more away than at home for the last few games!

First time post and starting with a positive prediction...

Why should Fulham be going to places like SJP with the idea that a draw is a good result? There is no need to fear Newcastle; any trip to a club outside the top four should be viewed as an opportunity for three points.

This is a game that we should aim to dominate from the off, play to our strengths, stick the ball in the box with confidence, have a shot from time to time. The home fans will soon get anxious...

2-0 Fulham

We're wearing our lucky red away shirt so the 100% success rate should continue.

Come on you reds.

Firstly welcome to the board.... your optimism is refreshing to see

I think we will struggle but maybe our away form is no fluke, and we will pick up a point or three.... It all depends on our lineup imo... I think newcastle will nick it 2-1

Get to half-time with a cleansheet and anything is possible.

We looked so much brighter against Arsenal with Bent and Kaka running into the final third (granted, Arsenal had the game wrapped up and their foot off the pedal), so let's hope that they are both fit enough to start.

I feel that this game will give a real indication of how the season will pan out... time to deliver on all the promise we show in fits and starts...

Jol continuing to confuse me...

- Taarabt dropped to bench (presuming he isn't fit to start...if he is fit then why drop the brightest player so far?)
- Kasami dropped completely - that will do his confidence a world of good
- Sidwell continues to be favoured over Boateng who I think is a better destroyer
- Ruiz to play where? Midfield or on right?

Fulham XI v Newcastle: Stockdale; Riether, Hangeland, Hughes, Riise; Kacaniklic, Sidwell, Parker, Ruiz; Berbatov, Bent.
Fulham bench: Etheridge, Karagounis, Duff, Briggs, Taarabt, Rodallega and Boateng.

Line-up:
Stockdale - Riether, Hughes, Hangeland, Riise - Ruiz, Sidwell, Parker, Kacaniklic - Berbatov - Bent

It's a very positive starting 11 at least. Dropping Taarabt seems odd. Ruiz has to put in a performance today

-Taarabt took a knock midweek, so likely not fully fit.
-Who would you replace Kasami with on the bench?  He's untried in the middle, so Karagounis and Boateng over him, Taarabt is a better player, Rodallega is the only striker, Briggs the only defender and that leaves Duff.  I'd personally prefer him over Duff, but can see why Jol hasn't.
-Agree entirely.
I'd imagine "wide" right, cutting inside.  With hopefully Kaca staying wide left for as much as he can.  Berba often floats to the right anyway, so maybe him and Ruiz are fairly interchangeable behind Bent?

Title: Re: Newcastle v Fulham, match day thread....
Post by: Alternative Right Back on August 31, 2013, 02:21:05 PM
My biggest concern is Riise being targetted with pace... obviously I approve of Kaka playing on the left, but we are vulnerable on that side when not is possession... fingers cross on that one.

Time for Ruiz to stake his claim and prove a few people wrong... but on the right... it's well documented that that is just not the solution...

No excuses for Berba not putting in a shift today...

I think we could afford to drop one of Kara or Boateng from the bench for Kasami. Chances are we will be looking to make attacking substitutions rather than defensive ones (I suspect we might be chasing the game later on rather than defending a lead personally)

I haven't seen Ruiz play well on th right since he's been at the club so strange one for me, but guess he has to go somewhere.

I was at the Parma game! Best player on the pitch against Betis, Parma he was ok, but not as good. Sunderland he actually played a better role than people were giving him credit for. It wasn't pretty but he broke down a lot of Sunderland attacks.

Why the fu#k is Riise playing. Biggest pile to sh!t we've had at left back. Why Ruiz out wide? Dejagah has been rubbish this preseason/season, so I understand him being dropped. I feel he may be sold. Sidwell on top of Boateng any day. Kasami injured, a shame. Taarabt being rested I presume, expect to see him in the second half.

All you Sidwell bashers, please zip it. I did say please. You are getting very boring and the team needs him. He has his limitations but fights for the ball and the team.

I will probably need to use this thread to follow the match as I cannot get the game on tv here on NBC. Still can't figure out cable carrier, comcast.  I hope I don't read comments about every mistake he makes.

Interesting to see how Berba and Bent play together. Question mark over Ruiz but plenty of alternatives on the bench. Kasami picked up an injury at Burton so not there.

Oh and interesting name not in the Saints squad. A certain Mr Cork. We will see.

Half time, and although it's not pretty, the main objective is met - cleansheet. The longer it goes on, the better, the Newcastle fans will get frustrated and we are always more creative in the second 45...

Berba will come good, winner from Bent...

Currently watching the everton game too and just wondering why we cant play like they do away? Sure they are a better team than we are, but they are also playing a seemingly better opposition. The difference is that they attack with pace, something we cannot seem to grasp the concept of.

The amount of times players don't play the easy ball to keep things moving. Everything is so slow, and Berba being so deep doesn't help.

Kaca has been really poor and Ruiz has to show a lot more urgency.

The first half is a perfect reason why few fans want to travel to watch the club. Not awful but just slow and yawn making. Exciting players are asked to defend. No quick breaks. But there is hope that Berbatov picks a place to play and actually controls the ball and Bent can see more of the ball.

I would love us to go for this. But I just can't see us even trying until we are a goal down.

I really don't think it's as bad as any of you are making out. Berbatov has been poor, I grant you, but other than that we've kept the ball nicely, had them under pressure for a 10 minute spell and have just lacked a bit of urgency. Parker starting to prove my small doubt wrong, really happy with that. Really enjoying him.

Berba omg... Tbh. his attitude makes me sick - he can be brilliant and awesome watching but he can also just kill us.  Taarabt on for Berba.

Missing Kasami's interceptions, heart, work rate and runs to the box.

Stockdale looking good.

Bent is at least in and around the box, one of our biggest problems last season. Berba way to deep once again, stay between our cm and Bent, we do not need you to create every play, just to be a perfect threat to free up Bent and be dangerously.

COYW!!! Get us another 3 pts..!

Another game without a clear-cut chance...

Sick of it. It can't keep going like this. Jol's best trait is his transfer dealing, but he's useless as a manager. I've always been in the camp of "he just needs time", "the team needs restructuring", "they'll learn to play together soon", but enough is enough. It's not the results I really care about tbh, it's the play. We've looked hopeless for so long, not just the past 3 games.

Khan, either get rid of Jol or give him some money. It can't go on like this..

The hardest opening 3 matches we have had for years & already some  want a new manager. The blame is entirely our penny pinching owners, both MAF & Khan.

It´s too late now to do much about it so we will now have a real struggle.

This team is so wrong. Time to ditch Jol, Berbatov, Ruiz and anyone else who can't be bothered. I am happy enough to watch us play outside the Premier League, I have done for 30 of my years, but this team is clueless under this pathetic manager and a club that hasn't seen this in the last 2 years is a club in disarray, with no strong leadership.

He was the one who selected Ruiz in a position where he is consistently poor. He is the one who selected Berbatov in a position where he has never played well for us. He is the one who started Sidwell.

The players were undoubtedly poor, he did a hell of a lot to facilitate that.

how can people still defend Jol when the only clear chance we had in the whole 90 minutes was as a result of Coloccini slipping? I'm sure the players have the ability to play well if they are under the guidance of a manager who knows what he is doing and knows how to get the best out of each and every player at the club.
Title: Re: Newcastle v Fulham, match day thread....
Post by: deeffc on August 31, 2013, 05:05:37 PM
I think it's important that we not overreact to a tough away game this early in the season but that was mighty frustrating. I don't like to criticise our players but Riise is finished as a Premiership player, too slow, too many poor touches and passes, lack of movement and most critically he never wants to take responsibility. So often he backs off and lets a player run at him or tries to make Brede or the midfielders defend for him. The rest of the back four were fine today, although defending corners didn't seem to be organised particularly well. Briggs needs to play if Richardson is out, either he's the future at left back or we need to know he isn't. Sidwell and Parker did fine, especially Parker who could be signing of the season, Sidwell isn't Zidane to state the obvious but over the course of 90 minutes and with flair players out wide he does a really solid job. As for the flair players... when it works we can look fantastic, some games last year Ruiz and Berbatov were terrific. But when it doesn't, we can be pretty atrocious. That is the risk we may have to take in trying to play good football and not being just another Stoke, West Ham type side, however when it isn't working we have the bench to change things and how Jol didn't use Taarabt or Duff is beyond me. Bent needs more game time if he's going to play well, but Berbatov just isn't a threat playing so deep. Jol needs to take control of games like this and at least try to change the pattern of us doing ok and then having a poor 15 minutes and losing.

Early season positivity to end, if Taarabt had scored we could have been in the top 5...

ffs berbatov... I'm sure you can sulk your way round a champs league team front line, think he forgets that we are Fulham and we don't have the likes of Ronald, scholes, giggs etc playing balls to him, he will actually have to look for the ball the lazy cock
Title: Re: Newcastle v Fulham, match day thread....
Post by: SmithyFFC on August 31, 2013, 05:06:43 PM
I've stuck with Jol through thick and thin so far but this is an effing joke! Berbatov doesn't deserve to wear the white shirt, imagine a player being as lazy as him in Roys team, he wouldn't last 5 minutes! But Jol gives him 90 minutes every bloody week regardless of how useless and pathetic he is. Our midfield and defence are still bloody ancient despite Jol banging on about lowering the average age of the squad. Had enough. Jol out.

Once again sitting too deep ruins our plans. It worked for quite a while to nullify Newcastle Utd but we got found out in the end, and it nullified all our attacks as the players had to travel further up the pitch. Really really REALLY poor performance against an average team. Berba was woeful and should've been subbed off for Taarabt, Rodallega should've come on earlier, I'd have liked to see Rodallega alongside Bent at some point.
Jol's negativity is passing through to the players, what is the point in signing so much attacking talent if you're going to be so negative?

Still, taraabt could've stolen it at the end if he hadn't flubbed a sitter. we deserved nothing from that game but nearly got a point anyway... not quite disgraceful but pretty darn close. the riether injury is the icing on the cake.

Bringing in ZERO backup right backs and playing briggs of all people out of position... i don't know, very irresponsible. jol had no options. we don't have the players. no investment. nothing to work with. we should be thankful that it was only 1-0. lucky they can't finish.

If Jol doesn´t get substantial funds in January I think he will resign in disgust. I would not blame him. A new decent manager won´t come to us as the same will happen to them. No, we will be begging for some Championship no hoper to manage us on a shoestring. Mackintosh will be rubbing his hands at next years balance sheet. There you go Mr Khan , a nice profit for you in your 1st year. Look at all the money we will get from the sale of Stockdale, Hangeland, Reither, Kaca, Dejadah, Frei, Kasami, Ruiz, Berbatov, . Don´t worry as the League have given us all parachutes so you won´t have to pay our Academy players much as they are so young & that is all the players we have left.

Sorry to be cynical.
