Reds move for Konchesky
Hodgson keen on landing Fulham ace

Skysports.com understands Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Fulham defender Paul Konchesky.

Reds bos Roy Hodgson has openly admitted bringing a new left-back is one of his top priorities this summer and it is believed he wants Konchesky to solve the problematic position.

Hodgson is a big admirer of Konchesy having worked with the 29-year-old for two-and-a-half-years prior to his switch to Anfield.

Liverpool are keen to bring in a new left-back before the close of the transfer window and had been linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven'sCarlos Salicido.

However, it appears Liverpool have opted to go for Konchesky with the player having just a year to run on his contract at Fulham.
Konchesky's future at Fulham has been the subject of speculation all summer with Birmingham having seen one bid turned down eartlier this summer.

New Fulham boss Mark Hughes was keen to keep hold of the former Charlton man, but Konchesky is thought to have informed the Cottagers chief of his desire to be reunited with Hodgson at Anfield.

Liverpool are believed to be prepared to pay up to £3.5million to land Konchesky as Hodgson looks to finalise his rebuilding plans at the club.

David's stock rising at Fulham
Former York City goalkeeper David Stockdale still expects to lose his place to a more senior goalkeeper despite a superb display for Fulham at the weekend.

The 24-year-old had a starring role at Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon as the home side twice came from behind to hold Manchester United to a 2-2 draw.

Stockdale made a couple of crucial saves from Reds striker Dimitar Berbatov to keep his side in the game early on before later denying Portuguese international Nani a winner from the penalty spot.

However, with Fulham's first-choice keeper Mark Schwarzer seemingly intent on a move to Arsenal, the former York shot-stopper was still expecting recently appointed Cottagers chief Mark Hughes to look elsewhere for a replacement.

"I believe the manager will buy an experienced keeper, and maybe I can displace the new guy if it comes to that," Stockdale told the Fulham Chronicle. "You dream about playing in the Premiership - never mind in front of Fabio Capello. And this was all about proving I can play in the Premier League rather than ousting Mark.

"I always believed I could do it, and I`ve been on loan a lot over the last two seasons in the lower divisions," he added. "But I thought that if I gave up hope, and this is no disrespect to the lads back in League One and Two - I would end up back there."

Fulham sign Algeria defender Halliche
(http://football.uk.reuters.com/uploads/2010/08/24/fs_rafik_halliche.jpg)

LONDON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Algeria defender Rafik Halliche has signed a three-year deal with Fulham, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old, who has joined the London club from Portuguese side Benfica for an undisclosed fee, played every minute of Algeria's three matches at the World Cup finals and impressed in the 0-0 draw against England.

"I'm so happy that my transfer to Fulham has been finalised," he said on Fulham's website (www.fulhamfc.com (http://www.fulhamfc.com)).

"The Premier League is the best league in the world and to be able to play alongside some wonderful players and to be given an opportunity to compete against some fantastic teams for a team like Fulham is something that I've always dreamed of doing."

Halliche spent most of his time at Benfica out on loan with fellow Portuguese club Nacional of Madeira.

Fulham players – and manager - are in it together

Despite yet being able to pick up three points, it has been a strong opening to Fulham's campaign

Two tricky matches – away to Bolton, home to Man United – have shown that the togetherness and spirit, that marked Roy Hodgson's managerial spell with The Cottagers, is alive and well under new boss Mark Hughes.

Even better news was that the passing moves are still evident as was shown with Simon Davies' first equaliser against United on Sunday.

In fact, there were many positives, as there usually are from a draw with the perennial title contenders, that indicate Hughes has been smart enough to recognise that tinkering is all that is required.

A little off the pace in the first-half - although Hughes obviously had a few words about what he expected - the team then delivered a much improved second half display, refused to buckle and many players stood out.

Bobby Zamora looked to have grown an inch from his first England cap, while Brede Hangeland - who has always been a rock - seems also to have recognised just how vital he is to the side.

So unfortunate with his own-goal, his determined challenge in United's box for a last-gasp equaliser seems to suggest Brede is going to be an even bigger influence at the club this season. Mobbed by his teammates, it is clear he is a popular guy too.

Then new signing Moussa Dembele did enough in a second half cameo to suggest his fee will be repaid early. There was also the suggestion that he and Zamora could become a really useful striking partnership in the making, even if, for the moment, his role is limited to 'impact from the bench'.

Then there is David Stockdale. Sure a dream move and finish from Davies stood out and, yes, Hangeland's determination to correct his own goal was inspirational, while Zamora made life extremely uncomfortable especially for Jonny Evans.

But Stockdale looked as though he had started a 'Who's Mark Schwarzer' petition – although tough to judge two strong games against two great seasons.

Having been given no chance with Paul Scholes' beauty or the own goal, the game's turning point had arrived from 12 yards out. Stockdale stepped up manfully to keep out Nani's penalty with an excellent save and looked assured throughout the whole game.

It seems Hughes is biding his time on Schwarzer but time is running out with the transfer deadline looming fast. But Stockdale has shown he may just be up for the job. For him, just like the team, it has been a good start to build on.

Cottage collapse not good enough: Vidic

By Sam Wallace
Tuesday August 24 2010

There are still 36 games left for Manchester United to join Chelsea in the goal plundering but in the light of their draw with Fulham on Sunday, even Nemanja Vidic had to concede that throwing away the lead in the final minutes was not good enough for a team that has aspirations to reclaim their Premier League title.

Chelsea have 12 goals already this season and are nine better off than United on goal difference alone, which is always worth a point itself in a close title race. Last season, Carlo Ancelotti's side finished with a goal difference that was 13 superior to United's which was nicely boosted by the eight they racked up against Wigan Athletic on the last day of the season.

First of all United will have to turn their attention to shutting their back door after they uncharacteristically conceded a late goal at Craven Cottage to Brede Hangeland's header to draw the game 2-2. Vidic, one of those who failed to put in a challenge on Hangeland, said that United had recovered from slow starts in the past.

"It's happened in previous years," he said. "We don't want to be too down after this result but it's definitely hard to take because we had the result in our hands.

"Everyone in the dressing room is very disappointed. It's a bad result, especially as we were winning in the last minute of the game. It's hard to take the draw.

"It was an up and down game, especially in the second half and it was hard because the weather was hotter than it usually is here. But it was the same for both teams and we were happy with the result at 2-1. But it's a shame whenever we drop points and we need to improve at set-pieces.

"It's hard to take. If it had finished 2-1 we would have been happy with the result but not that much with the performance. But if we'd won we could have forgotten this game. But now there are definitely some lessons we must learn from this."

United lost their second league game of last season to Burnley and drew with Newcastle and Reading on the previous two opening days of the season. Ryan Giggs said: "The Premier League is the most important (trophy to win) after losing the title by a point last season. We lost far too many last year (seven). You know you are going to slip up during a season, and every away game is tough, but you have to limit the mistakes."

Rafik Halliche signs for Fulham
By: timmyg | August 24th, 2010

Algerian center-back Rafik Halliche joins Fulham on a three-year deal, reported to be around the 2-million pound mark.

Halliche is Mark Hughes' second signing since taking over in late July, and should provide great cover for our ailing center of defense that saw signing Phillipe Senderos blow an achilles.

Despite being just 23 years old, Halliche already has 20 caps and one goal for his native Algeria. He was an integral part in helping the Desert Foxes qualify for their first World Cup since 1986, and then only conceding two goals — despite not scoring one.

Halliche was a Benfica player but never once featured for them. He instead was loaned out to C.D. Nacional of Madeira. One could argue that he was not good enough for Benfica, but I think he'll be good enough for us. Hopefully he features in tomorrow night's Carling Cup match against Port Vale.

I found this story about how Halliche's fellow Algerians are milling around as free agents after the World Cup. Gotta love the backhanded compliment at the end.

Still, the Greens' performance in South Africa certainly caught the attention of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. He was often quoted as praising the skills of Yebda and Halliche. For a while, it looked like the Premiereship side was set to make a deal.

Then Arsenal made it clear it had no plans for them, making them face an unknown fate.

Halliche, who for the last 2 years has been playing on loan from Benfica to fellow Portuguese club Naciona, may have a way out.

With Fulham.

Ouch.

Fulham's new signings Moussa Dembele and Rafik Halliche are both available for their Carling Cup tie against Port Vale.

Happy Halliche joins Cottagers
Fulham have confirmed the signing Algeria defender Rafik Halliche on a three-year deal from Portuguese side Benfica.

The 23-year-old could go straight into the squad for tomorrow's Carling Cup tie against Port Vale at Craven Cottage.

Fulham manager Mark Hughes also has Moussa Dembele available after the Belgian striker received international clearance following his £5million switch from AZ Alkmaar.

Halliche joins a club in buoyant mood following an impressive performance in Saturday's draw with Manchester United.

"I'm so happy that my transfer to Fulham has been finalised," he said.

"For me, the Premier League is the best league in the world and to be able to play alongside some wonderful players and to be given an opportunity to compete against some fantastic teams for a team like Fulham is something that I've always dreamed of doing."

Halliche in line for debut
by DAN on AUGUST 24, 2010

Rafik Halliche could make his Fulham debut in tomorrow's League Cup tie against Port Vale.

The Algerian centre back, who completed his £2m move from Benfica on Monday, has been included in Mark Hughes' squad for the second round fixture at Craven Cottage and could replace either Brede Hangeland or Aaron Hughes at the heart of the Fulham defence, especially with Saturday's trip to Blackpool in mind. Moussa Dembele, impressive from the bench against Manchester United on Sunday, is expected to make his full debut against the League Two side.

According to the Press Association, Rob Milsom, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Frederik Stoor and Eddie Johnson are all available for selection.

Placement Of A Penalty
by: The United Religion
24 AUG 2010

Much is being made about Manchester United's missed penalty in the 2-2 draw against Fulham, so where should have Nani placed his kick?

This question has very simple, obvious answer – in the back of the net – but if it were only that easy.

With the score at 2-1 in United's favor, the Reds were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute following Damien Duff's unintentional handling of the ball inside the area, but Nani's penalty was well-saved by Fulham's goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Directly after the match and without seeing the placement of Nani's kick, Sir Alex Ferguson said that all penalties should have some height on them, which makes it harder for the goalkeeper to save.

Like he normally is, the United manager was spot on, because if his effort was struck into the top corner then Stockdale would have had no chance of saving it, but despite the fact that it was hit low and hard, the young 'keeper was able to get down and push it away.

Nowadays, the reaction of the goalkeepers is much quicker, so it is imperative for the attacker to strike the ball as cleanly and as high into the top corner as possible.

Opposers will say that the attackers have the advantage, because they are striking a ball into a 192 square-foot (24′ x 8′) goal from just 12-yards out, but the wingspan of a normal goalkeeper ranges from six to seven feet will do well to cover the vast majority of the goal.

Guess
Hitting penalties has become a bit of a strategic guessing game for not only the goalkeeper, but also the spot kick taker.

Like in the match-up between Nani and Stockdale, if the 'keeper saves the penalty then he is a hero and the taker of kick is a goat, but in actuality each of them have a 50/50 chance of either scoring or saving it.

Take nothing away from the 24-year old shot stopper, because he fully deserves credit for helping Fulham earn a point in the match, however, if Nani converted the kick then he would have been seen as the hero, but the goalkeeper would not have been at fault, because he was "supposed" to have scored – a catch-22, really.

Statistics
To better prove this point, there were seven penalty kicks in the second round of Barclays Premier League and four of them were missed (three saved).

Carlton Cole (West Ham United) and Morten Gamst Pedersen (Blackburn Rovers) both had their penalties saved, but John Carew (Aston Villa) totally missed the target.

The amazing correlation about each of the players that missed spot kicks this weekend – their team lost – and in each circumstance, a successful conversion would have given their team the lead as well.

Manchester United should learn a valuable lesson with this missed opportunity at sealing three points, and hopefully they will not make the same mistake again.

Fulham sign Rafik Halliche

FULHAM have signed Algerian international defender Rafik Halliche.

The 23-year-old centre-half will fill the void left by the crocked Philippe Senderos, who is set for a long spell on the sidelines following an injury in training.

Halliche started his career at NA Hussein Dey before moving to Benfica in 2008.

He spent the past two seasons on loan at CD Nacional of Madeira, and starred for his country in this summer's World Cup.

Halliche has signed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage that will keep him in SW6 until 2013.

Liverpool closing in on Konchesky?
by DAN on AUGUST 25, 2010

Time for another transfer saga straight from the Sky Sports studios in Isleworth. A story carried prominently on the Sky Sports website this morning declares that Liverpool are 'closing in' on Paul Konchesky.

The report claims that Liverpool have dropped their interest in PSV defender Carlos Salicido in favour of a move for Konchesky as the Fulham defender only has a year left on his Craven Cottage contract. Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson, who claimed he wouldn't be raiding his former club during his first press conference at Anfield, has identified left back as a problem position to be solved before the close of the transfer window and Konchesky is apparently keen to be reunited with his former manager on Merseyside.

As usual, there are no quotes to substantiate these inferences – but expect it to feature pretty strongly on the rolling sports news channel. It will be interesting to if Konchesky's included in the side to face Port Vale this evening.

The former England international, who has made 122 appearances for the Whites since moving from West Ham for £1.5m in 2007, missed Fulham's first game of the season at Bolton but returned to the starting line-up for Sunday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United. Sky Sports suggest Hodgson would be willing to part with £3.5m to sign Konchesky. Watch this space.

MICKEY ADAMS TO MISS FULHAM STRIKER ZAMORA

Former Fulham and now Port Vale manager Mickey Adams and Bobby Zamora have already exchanged texts before Fulham's Carling Cup clash with Port Vale.

But it had nothing to with the match that brings the former Whites manager back to the Cottage for the third time since he was sacked at the start of chairman Mohamed Al Fayed's reign in 1997.

"We texted each other last week before the England game to thank each other for the past at Brighton," said Adams.

"I was proud of the fact he played for England and I hope he gets a few more opportunities."

"Bobby is a great kid who always knew where the back of the net was," said Adams.

"He was a very intelligent footballer, I didn't have to tell him things twice and if I gave him a rollicking he didn't sulk."

But it's likely Zamora will sit out the game as current Fulham boss Mark Hughes is ready to make a raft of changes to the team that produced an exciting 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

Hughes had six internationals warming the bench against the Man Utd, and with Blackpool and the Premier League a bigger priority on Saturday, Hughes could make use of all six to knock over the League Two side.

Adams seeks Fulham revenge in Carling Cup

Port Vale boss Micky Adams wants his team to wipe the smile off Mohamed Al Fayed's face.

The Fulham owner sacked Adams in 1997 so Kevin Keegan could launch a top-flight return.

He is back in League Two now with unbeaten Vale, who shocked QPR in the first round, storming to a 3-1 win at Loftus Road.

Adams, whose No.2 Geoff Horsfield is also an ex-Fulham player, said: "If you are going to pull off a shock you need a confident side – and we are.

"This game can show how far we have come over the past 12 months."

Vale will pin their hopes on a pair of striking Richards. Marc Richards netted 22 times last term, while Justin bagged two at QPR

Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz edges towards 5m Lazio switch

Roque Santa Cruz's Manchester City nightmare looks set to end after the player's agent revealed Lazio have tabled a bid for the striker. The Serie A outfit have offered just £5million for Santa Cruz, who joined City last summer in a deal worth almost four times that amount. Since his move from Blackburn, the Paraguay international has seen a raft of stars also arrive at Eastlands, nudging him further down the pecking order.
Up for grabs: Out-of-favour Man City striker Roque Santa Cruz is wanted by Lazio Emmanuel Adebayor and Carlos Tevez usurped him last year, while the arrival of Mario Balotelli has further limited a player who has also suffered a series of injuries.
'I understand that there have been meetings between Manchester City and Lazio's officials for the transfer of Santa Cruz,' explained his agent Jan Van Baal. International class: Santa Cruz played for Paraguay in this summer's World Cup 'I have been informed about the real interest of Lazio.
At this moment I can say that there are 50 per cent possibility that the transfer can be done. 'This proposal is official and according to what I have been informed Lazio would be offering £5million.' Lazio president Claudio Lotito confirmed negotiations and admitted there was no back-up plan. 'The talks for Santa Cruz are still open, but we are thinking in detail about some aspects,' he said. 'We will make the right assessments and decide soon.
There are no alternatives to Santa Cruz, if we don't buy him.' Santa Cruz, who played in this summer's World Cup, has also been linked with a move to Fulham where he would join up with Mark Hughes under whom he excelled at Blackburn.
West Ham approached City about a potential loan for the striker who arrived in the Premier League from Bayern Munich in 2007.

Port Vale: Adams proud to take Valiants to club where his managerial career started
MICKY Adams will be bursting with pride tonight when his Port Vale underdogs attempt to pull off another Carling Cup shock, this time at Premier League outfit Fulham.

Vale secured their second-round glamour tie at Craven Cottage (8pm) with an unlikely 3-1 win over Championship QPR.

And it is a ground that holds special memories for Adams, who led the Cottagers to promotion out of the old Third Division in 1997 during his first managerial job.

"I'm really proud of what I achieved at Fulham," said Adams, who took charge there in March 1996 when they were 91st in the Football League.

"There was a lot of experience and spirit in that promotion side, plus they were very fit," he recalled.

"When you take on your first managerial job you are under enormous pressure to produce the goods.

"If you don't, you are quickly forgotten.

"But if you can succeed it stands you in good stead and you can get another job on the back of that.

"I will always have a soft spot for Fulham and the great people there."

Despite masterminding Fulham's 1996-97 promotion season, Adams was replaced by Kevin Keegan after Mohamed Al Fayed, then the owner of Harrods, seized control of the club.

Fulham's current boss is Mark Hughes, pictured below, and he is likely to omit some of his star players – including England striker Bobby Zamora – from his starting line-up tonight following their 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

But Hughes could include centre-half Rafik Halliche, who played for Algeria in their goalless draw with England during this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa, in his squad after the 23-year-old Algerian international arrived on a three-year deal from Benfica yesterday.

Fulham still have doubts over the fitness of striker Diomansy Kamara (foot) and keeper Mark Schwarzer (back).

Vale have no new injury worries.

However, Valiants centre-half Ritchie Sutton is still suspended.

Zamora is sure to take time out to offer a warm handshake to Adams, who set him on the path to stardom by signing him for £100,000 during his first spell as Brighton boss in 2000.

The 29-year-old was sold to Tottenham for £1.5m in July 2003 after netting 76 goals in 125 appearances for Brighton in the lower leagues.

And earlier this month Zamora made his England debut in the 2-1 win over Hungary at Wembley.

"Bobby is a great kid who always knew where the back of the net was," said Adams. "He was a very intelligent footballer. I didn't have to tell him things twice and if I gave him a rollicking he didn't sulk.

"We texted each other last week before the England game.

"I was proud of the fact he played for England and I hope he gets a few more opportunities."

Port Vale:Geoff Horsfield outlines plan for Carling Cup success

GEOFF Horsfield says Vale must go straight for Fulham's throat as they look to spring another Carling Cup shock tonight (8pm), writes Steve Shaw.

The Valiants booked their trip to Craven Cottage after a surprise 3-1 victory at Championship side QPR in the first round.

And Horsfield insists Vale won't roll over against the Premier League side who drew with Manchester United on Sunday.

"Our tempo must be 100 miles per hour and we've got to get in their faces from the start," said Horsfield.

"Manchester United let them play a little on Sunday and Fulham cut through them at times. We also need to be switched on from set-plays, because they do things quickly.

"We're going to enjoy the night, but we're not just going down there to roll over."

Tonight's tie will evoke fond memories for Vale's management team.

Boss Micky Adams led Fulham to promotion from League Two in the 1996/97 season, while assistant manager Horsfield scored 22 goals in 59 league appearances for the club between 1998 and 2000.

Horsfield also helped Fulham win promotion to the Championship before signing for Birmingham City in a deal worth £2.25m.

"I owe Fulham a great deal," added Horsfield.

'Our spirit is just as good under Sparky'

BREDE HANGELAND believes Fulham have made a seamless managerial transition from Roy Hodgson to Mark Hughes.

Hodgson, the mastermind of the most successful spell in the Cottagers' history, departed for Liverpool over the summer.

Hughes was given the unenviable task of filling his shoes but the former Manchester City boss has made an encouraging start.

A point secured at Bolton was followed up by Sunday's thrilling 2-2 draw with Manchester United and Hangeland insists the team are content under Hughes.

"There is no reason why we should lose our team spirit because we changed manager," said the Norway defender.

"Towards the end against United our team spirit was every bit as good as it has been for the last couple of years.

"We came back again at Craven Cottage as we have done many times.

"It was a great feeling to be part of that and I'm confident Mark Hughes can lead us in the right direction."

Hangeland insists Hughes has brought a change in emphasis to the team's tactics, while emphasising their refusal to be intimidated by reputations.

"Now we get at teams a bit more. We did that a bit more against United than we have done in the past against good teams, even at home," he said.

"We used to concede ground earlier and let the opposition play whereas now we press high and take the game to them.

"It worked at times and other times not so well but I'm sure we'll get better as we get time to work on things."

Cottagers Daily Rumor Mill: Latest Speculation Surrounding Paul Konchesky And Liverpool

Fulham left back Paul Konchesky has been linked to interest from Birmingham and Liverpool this summer. lately there have been more reports with speculation surrounding Konchesky and Liverpool. Here is the latest information involving the Fulham defender. According to Sky Sports, Liverpool are moving in to sign Paul Konchesky.

The story goes on to mention that Roy Hodgson and Liverpool are getting ready to go up to £3.5million to offer Fulham for Konchesky. The left back is in in the final year of his contact with Fulham.

The Sky Sports story does mention that Mark Hughes has a desire to keep Paul Konchesky. However, the report discusses that Konchesky is thought to have told the Fulham manager that he would like to go to Liverpool and play at Anfield.

I will continue to follow the speculation surrounding Paul Konchesky and Liverpool. As I have mentioned several times, Roy Hodgson stated at his first press conference at Liverpool that he would not raid Fulham. I will update this story when more information is available.

No hard feelings for Port Vale's Micky Adams on his Fulham homecoming
Vale's manager returns for a Carling Cup clash at his former club where he won promotion – only to be fired by the new chairman

Fulham supporters might have cause to consider this evening's Carling Cup collision with an unbeaten League Two side already pepped by one giant killing in west London this season with some trepidation. Instead, Port Vale's visit to Craven Cottage will feel like a homecoming.

Micky Adams, like his assistant manager Geoff Horsfield, has history in these parts. It was on the banks of the Thames that Adams began his managerial career back in 1996, when Fulham languished 91st out of 92 in the footballing pyramid, and it was under the former Southampton full-back that the London club began its rise through the divisions which culminated last year in an appearance in the Europa League final.

There was a smattering of applause when his name was read out over the Tannoy by David Hamilton when previewing the Vale tie during the interval in Fulham's impressive draw with Manchester United on Sunday. His contribution to the miracle of this club's renaissance has not been forgotten. There are some who remain uncomfortable that Adams – who had hoisted the Cottagers away from the foot of the Football League and then, with a squad flung together on free transfers and small fees, earned promotion to what is now League One in his only full season in charge – was simply dismissed by the new chairman, Mohamed al-Fayed, in the higher division.

That rise from foot to third tier was a fine achievement and arguably the most impressive leap of all, made long before Fayed's money had transformed the level of expectation at the club, only for the new owner to favour a high profile appointment, with Ray Wilkins recruited as head coach and Kevin Keegan as director of football. At the time, that decision felt ruthless and insanely harsh. Yet, 13 years on and after a nomadic managerial career that has incorporated spells at seven further clubs, there are no hard feelings.

"For me and my management team, it's a fantastic draw," said Adams. "I started my managerial career there and I have very, very fond memories of the club. Obviously, when Mr Fayed came in things altered slightly but it'll still be nice to go down and see some of my old friends and the fans again because they were different class to me."

This will not be the 48-year-old's first return. Adams brought Brentford to Craven Cottage a few months after his dismissal in December 1997, when the recently signed Paul Peschisolido equalised for the hosts in a 1-1 draw, then twice visited as Leicester City's manager for Premier League games earlier this decade. Those trips yielded a point, in April 2002, and a 2-0 defeat a year later.

Yet this will be the first return to his old stomping ground with a gulf in divisions between the sides. Fulham have never been stronger than at present, the achievements of the Roy Hodgson era still fresh and Mark Hughes's team strengthened and encouraged by their fine display against United. The club and its supporters have reason to expect a solid top-flight campaign ahead, with few fears of being sucked into a relegation scrap. "Taking them on represents an enormous task because, even if Fulham put their reserve team out, it will still be worth millions," said Adams. "But if you are ever going to pull off a shock, you need to have a confident side."

Thankfully, he has just that. Vale's 3-1 dismissal of Queen's Park Rangers – currently top of the Championship – in the previous round was no fluke and sits easily amid an unbeaten start to their own campaign that has them fourth in League Two. That form has been mustered amid intrigue off the pitch, with the board resisting the New York-based hedge fund trader Mike Newton's offer to invest £500,000 in the club, but with some fine attacking style on it. Vale are propelled by a strike-force of Marc Richards and Justin Richards and this team is gelling encouragingly. The club has sunk low in recent seasons but there is reason for optimism that Adams may be working his lower-league magic once again.

The trip to Fulham is the first of three stern examinations of their credentials in a week, with the visit of the leaders Torquay to Vale Park on Saturday and then a Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Rochdale of League One to come. "This week is going to be testing," added Horsfield, who cost Fulham £300,000 back in 1998 and helped propel them to the League One title. "The Fulham match will show us how far we have come over the past 12 months, but Saturday's game is massive against Torquay." Whether they win or not, Adams and his No2 will be welcomed this evening as old friends.

Fulham - Konchesky Deal Nearing Conclusion
Upon ex-manager Roy Hodgson leaving Fulham to move to Liverpool, many of us will remember his words of assurance when he promised he wouldn't 'raid' our humble team in pursuit of improving his newly inherited side.

What constitutes a raid is difficult to gauge, but, after making such a bold statement, I think we would all feel hard done by if he made a move for any of our players.

However, his decision to up sticks and depart to pastures new isn't proving as merited as many felt it would, and his side haven't began the season as brightly as expected.

The 3-0 defeat to Manchester City may have been a one off result and it's very early days yet, but, alongside such an illustrious job comes huge pressure. In fact, I wouldn't be exaggerating when I say a fair proportion of Scousers were calling for his resignation hours after the appointment.

Clearly, in an attempt to turn things round, Hodgson will dip into a market he knows well; our squad!

A bid of around £3.5 million is expected to be table for left-back Paul Konchesky over the next few days, which is likely to be accepted given that only one year remains on Konchesky's Fulham deal.

It's also highly likely that the full-back will accept terms as he is a want-away, much like Mark Schwarzer, craving a re-union with his former boss.

So, is a mass-exit on the cards, and is anyone a little upset with Roy if this does prove to be true?

Fulham v Port Vale - Team News

Fulham's new signings Moussa Dembele and Rafik Halliche are both available for their Carling Cup tie against Port Vale.
Goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer remains doubtful with the back problem which prevented him from playing in the draws with Bolton and Manchester United.

Long-term injury victims Philippe Senderos (Achilles), Andrew Johnson (knee) and Diomansy Kamara (foot) are out.

Port Vale boss Micky Adams is unlikely to make changes. Vale won 3-1 at Southend on Saturday and Adams is likely to stick with the same squad for the trip to Craven Cottage.

Striker Marc Richards looks set to start after scoring twice at Roots Hall to seal Vale's third consecutive away win of the season. Kris Taylor and Tommy Fraser are likely to keep their places on the bench.

Doug Loft is ruled out with two broken ribs and a punctured lung which he sustained during the 1-1 league draw with Chesterfield. The midfielder is the only injury concern.

Introducing.... Dembélé
by TOR on AUGUST 25, 2010

Far be it from me to undermine David "Diddy" Hamilton's enthusiastic welcome on Sunday but just who is Dembélé? Being that he's a Premier League newbie I've had to scour the internet for some clues. The basics have been covered in various press releases; young, Belgian international striker who joins us from the Eredivisie where he played for Willem II Tilburg and AZ Alkmaar. But is he any good?

Before Sunday, he had made 209 total appearances for 3 clubs (his first year as a professional footballer was spent at Germinal Beerscholt) and scored 43 goals, just under 1 goal every 5 games. That's not dreadful but actually, in his first 2 seasons he only scored 2. But he was 16. Before he was poached by the bigger boys, Moussa had a pretty successful season at Willem II, scoring 10 goals in 39 appearances. By comparison, Zoltan Gera scored that many in 46 games – and he was our Player of the 2009/10 Season. Anyway... Arguably Dembélé's most successful season was 2006/07 where he scored 13 goals in 53 appearances helping AZ Alkmaar reach third in the Eredivisie and the final of the KNVB (Dutch) Cup, in which he scored AZ's only open-play goal (AZ lost 7-8 on penalties).

It's a little harder to find any up-to-date statistics on Dembélé's international career as Wikipedia doesn't seem to go past November 2009, by which point he'd earned 28 caps and scored 5 goals, and the offical website of the Belgian FA wouldn't load. The most interesting thing I found about that is that the Belgian national team's nickname is the Red Devils. Oh the irony.

I did manage to find some videos demonstrating what an impressive left foot the boy's got. Have a look at this one.

He may not be the most prolific striker ever but then what do you expect for £5m? The key thing is that he's young, he's experienced at a high level and, judging by glimpses we saw on Sunday, he's got good technique. That can all be built on to produce a great all-round player. Speaking of Sunday, I thought he made some good passes and seemed to link up well with Zamora and Davies. Fortunately the Guardian chalkboards back me up on this:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/3hzJB2rj2J169krBd1n2?plckFindCommentKey=CommentKey:0b5bed56-2f87-4ac5-9e0b-7bc2dee28115 (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/3hzJB2rj2J169krBd1n2?plckFindCommentKey=CommentKey:0b5bed56-2f87-4ac5-9e0b-7bc2dee28115)

My conclusion? I'm not sure where he'll fit in the pecking order with Dempsey and Gera (it's probably safe to assume that Zamora is unlikely to be dropped any time soon) but if he gets the game time I'm confident he'll prove to be a good signing.

Liverpool Set to Complete £4m Left Back Signing: Hodgson Ready to Seal Konchesky Deal

Londoner on his way to Anfield.

(Sky Sports)

It's a deal that makes a great deal of sense and will set the cash strapped Anfield club back just £4m or so and will resolve the issues they have at left back. Paul Konchesky is an experienced determined performer who is very effective going forward and pretty solid when dealing with an opposing winger.

The 29 year old has notched up the best part of 300 odd appearances for various London sides and Hodgson clearly feels he is the right man for the job or perhaps is the right man at the right price more than anything else.

The Barking born player may feel that a high profile move to Merseyside could re-open the possibility of an England recall, some five years since he was last selected. He helped Fulham to the Europa League final last term and is of course well known by Liverpool fans for his shot/cross that he put away from 30 yards in the 2006 FA Cup Final.

Slick Systems: East Stand IS Ready
The new East Stand at Bloomfield Road will be ready to house Fulham fans on Saturday, Slick Systems have said today.

There had been growing fears that work wouldn't be completed in time for tonight's Lancashire Cup match against Morecambe, which is being used as a trial run to gain safety certificates.

The match is free and Blackpool are looking for around 1,500 supporters to turn out and test the new structure.

A spokesman for Slick Systems - who were charged with the building of the 5,000-seated - said: 'It will definitely be ready and will pass all safety checks without any problems this evening.

'I'm more than 99% sure of the game on Saturday going ahead.

'People down at the site have said that there is still minor work to be done this afternoon but that, from experience, only takes a couple of hours. They should be well underway with it by now.

'We'd urge supporters to get down there and make sure there are no problems so that Blackpool can play their first Premiership game this weekend.'

The final touches to the temporary East are being put to it which will bring an end to a summer of speculation surrounding its opening date.

The Seasiders had to switch their first game of the Premier League season against Wigan to the DW Stadium weeks before the campaign started.

That didn't hinder the team as many expected, with Ian Holloway's side running out 4-0 winners.

With regards to the stand, there is no news on whether or it will be made permanent in the future, which is a service Slick offer to its customers.

wow, with every article, it seems that we're getting more and more for Konchesky. If we can hold out until the end of the day, it could be up to 5.5m and a packet of crisps.

Mexican international Carlos Salcido appears to be on his way out of Eredivisie giants PSV as the Eindhoven side have reached an agreement with Premier League side Fulham over the transfer of the defender.

A report in Eindhovens Dagblad claims that Fulham will pay €2 million for the services of the highly rated defender. The London side have yet to agree personal terms with the Mexico World Cup star.

The Cottagers are in the market for a new left back because of the expected departure of Paul Konchesky to Liverpool and manager Mark Hughes reportedly sees 30-year-old Salcido as the perfect replacement.

Salcido joined PSV from Guadalajara in the summer of 2006 and didn't waste any time in becoming an important first team member with the Eindhoven outfit. The versatile defender has made well over 100 official appearances for PSV.

He declared earlier this summer that he wanted to leave PSV and had since been linked with several Premier League sides. Liverpool, West Ham United and Birmingham City have also been linked with Salcido.

Fulham are interested in Juventus veteran Mauro Camoranesi.

Camoranesi, available from Juve on a free transfer, saw a move to Birmingham City fall through earlier this week.

Tuttosport says Fulham have been contacted by Camoranesi's representatives.

Cottagers boss Mark Hughes has told Camoranesi to wait as he considers his options in the final days of the market.

THE INSIDER: Zoltan Gera's Fulham future uncertain, John Utaka on Sunderland radar as Newcastle eye Hull's Kamil Zayatte
Simon Jones is Sportsmail's man on the inside of all the major transfer moves this summer.
His column, published every weekday, offers an insight into the deals which will be done and those that won't - and why.
A 5/5-rating  means The Insider reckons it's a done deal; 0/5 means The Insider has his mortgage on it not happening.
Don't miss your daily instalment of The Insider every weekday through the transfer window here at MailOnline.

Zoltan Gera
Fulham to Auxerre - The Insider says: 2/5

The Hungary international has held talks about his future with Fulham amid concerns he will become a bit-part player under Mark Hughes.

Gera enjoyed a decent season last campaign and was hoping to continue this term but Hughes has brought in Moussa Dembele to work alongside Bobby Zamora and that will limit Gera's options.

Hughes is believed to be still looking at strengthening his attacking options and may try and do a loan deal which could push Gera further down the pecking order unless Hughes utilises him in a different role.

European clubs are circling but Gera is keen to stay in the Premier League and could find a new home before Tuesday.

John Utaka
Portsmouth to Sunderland - The Insider says: 3/5

Portsmouth have been keen to offload the Nigerian for some time in the hope of raising much-needed funds yet have struggled to find a suitable buyer.

Sunderland have shown an interest while Wigan and Celtic could also come into the equation after making late inquiries.
The 28-year-old was Portsmouth's record buy in 2007 but has become symbolic of a sad era for the club where overspending has cost them dearly.

Utaka has failed to find the form he is capable of over recent seasons and is desperate for a change of scenery to kickstart his career.

The price will help encourage buyers looking for players of Premier League experience - and with the window closing shut.

Kamil Zayatte
Hull to Newcastle - The Insider says: 3/5

The rangy centre-half has been watched by Premier League scouts during his games this season and is expected to be sold before Tuesday.

Newcastle assistant manager Colin Calderwood ran the rule over the 25-year-old at the weekend and, finance permitting, is expected to recommend a bid for the Guinea international.

Zayatte almost joined Newcastle before he signed for Hull and had a trial spell there but terms couldn't be agreed and he spent two years in the Premier League under Phil Brown instead.

Other clubs such as Stoke and Wigan have also monitored his progress but Newcastle look poised to add yet another defender to their mix.

Ahmed Fathy
Al-Ahly to West Ham - The Insider says: 4/5

Had an ill-fated spell at Sheffield United in 2007 but Fathy has gained plenty more experience since and is destined for a return to the Premier League with West Ham.

Talks should continue today with a work permit needed but Fathy has over 70 caps for Egypt and at just 25 is set to earn many more, fitness permitting.

He became Egypt's youngest ever player when he was selected as a 17-year-old in 2001 and if anyone was shaped to impress in Europe it seemed he was the one.

However, his £750,000 move to Sheffield United failed to live up to expectation.

He played against Tottenham and Liverpool but after six games in total that was it and reluctantly he went back to Egypt.

He is now hopeful of better times with West Ham where he can solve Avram Grant's problem right-back position and cover in midfield.

Fulham Agree Terms With PSV Over Carlos Salcido - Report

Fulham - Salcido on His Way
With rumours surrounding our left-back, Paul Konchesky, being more rife than ever, it appears that Mark Hughes is looking to act quickly to fill in the gap that is likely to be left.

Having already dived into the Eredvisie market, snapping up forward Moussa Dembele, Mark Hughes looks set to return with the capture of versatile PSV defender Carlos Salcido.

It has to presumed that if this goes through, the Mexican international, who heavily impressed during the World Cup, would be a direct replacement for Liverpool-bound Konchesky.

To add a confusing twist to the story, yesterday, Liverpool were seemingly favourites themselves to capture the World Cup star. What happened there is anybody's guess.

Perhaps he just knows we're a better football team?

Fulham - Gera Out?
Since moving to Craven Cottage on a bosman in 2008, midfielder-come-forward Zoltan Gera has suffered mixed fortunes with a wavering first year followed by a 'Player of the Season' award in the 2009/10 term.

Despite his obvious improvement and adaption here in London, it would seem new manager Mark Hughes may well consider Gera more of a bit-part player than a first teamer; something which any genuine footballer would not be happy to hear.

With that in mind it's being rumoured that both parties will seek a resolution over the coming days as to loaning the Hungarian out or simply selling him on.

AJ Auxerre have supposedly expressed an interest but it's thought Gera would prefer to stay in England.

I for one hope it's not true, but, we'll endeavor to keep you updated!

Fulham vs. Port Vale in Carling Carling Cup At Craven Cottage

Fulham play Port Vale today in the Carling Cup at Craven Cottage. The match takes place at 8PM UK Time and 3PM EST. There is no televised broadcast of this game. Port Vale are a league two team and so far this season unbeaten. They are currently fourth in their league.

There is a possibility that Fulham could be resting some starters and giving some other players a chance to play. Also, newcomers Rafik Halliche and Moussa Dembele could be playing in this match - up. Finally, Mark Schwarzer has been dealing with a back injury, and it is unclear if he will be available for this game.

Port Vale does have a very good connection to Fulham. Their manager is Micky Adams who played for the Cottagers from 1994 - 1997. He also was a player-manager from 1996 - 1997. I am sure there will be fans that will be happy to see him back at Craven Cottage.

Adams in the 1996 - 1997 season helped Fulham get promoted up to Division Two. This was a big step in the process up the ladder of divisions which would eventually lead to the Premier League.

This should be an interesting matchup for Fulham which I will be following today. Let's hope the Cottagers take care of business and move on in the Carling Cup.

One In, One Out?

With one week left in the transfer window to do business, Mark Hughes brings big Algerian defender Rafik Halliche to the Cottage, but rumours are mounting he may be on the brink of losing his international left-back...to Roy Hodgson's Liverpool.

Halliche was at Motspur Park last Friday for his medical and once international clearance arrived the deal was announced Tuesday. For £1.3 million Fulham have the 23-year old Halliche on a three year contract. Although the central defender was unable to cement a place in the Benfica back four, he has made his mark for the national side and played all three of Algeria's World Cup games in South Africa, where of course they held England to a 0-0 draw.

With the enforced six month lay-off facing Senderos after his ruptured achilles tendon, Halliche brings essential cover to our outstanding central defence partnership of Hangeland and Hughes (while Brede took Sunday's headlines, scrutiny of the match tape shows yet again Hughes positional sense, interceptions and distribution to have been immaculate). Fulham incidentally are now possibly the only Premiership club where all four of their centre-backs are current internationals. How about that!

I sense that Mark has one more signing at least up his sleeve. A lot of posters, myself included, still feel more urgency than Murphy at 32 can now inspire needs to come from the midfield. But who's the target here (if at all)?

On the down side, Mark will certainly find Liverpool's overtures to Paul Konchesky unwelcome. Any 'gentlemen's agreement' that might have existed when Roy left for Liverpool (when has that ever held sway in the Prem over the past decade?) was surely swept away by al Fayed's uncalled for damning of Roy after his departure.

Anyway, Liverpool need a left-back urgently. They've offered £3.5 million for a player with one year on his contract, and 29-year-old Paul has expressed a desire to be reunited with his old boss. Write your own headline from that. Fulham's dilemma is that left-back is the hardest position in football to fill and we currently have no obvious candidate to fit Konchesky's boots.

As ever. do let us know what you think. By the way, many thanks re the number of kind comments to date for this blog.

To Patrick may I say, as others have done, I do admire so much of Clint's game. I took a look at his form stats for last season. When we came from behind to beat Hamburg last April at the Cottage (Simon's fabulous finish under pressure and Gera's winner from a corner), Deuce and Zoltan were leading the line for the last third of that game after Bobby's ankle gave out, so he can perform as the front man no doubt. But I do feel for the way he turned his form around last season Gera should currently be getting the nod from the start. Demps will be more useful as an 'impact' player coming from the bench than vice versa. But who'd be a manager? That is a very tough call to make currently with Davies, Duff and Riise all in the mix too.

As for the inability of officials to punish United properly, Patrick it goes right back to our very first game in the Prem - also against United. Leading 1-0 (Saha 4 mins) and giving the Reds a fooball lesson, Mike Riley (known in football as United's 12th man) penalised Finnan for a legitimate challenge 25 yards out, free-kick curled in off the bar by Beckham, United back in the game go on to steal it 3-2.

Monday's Sky Sports had ex-ref Dermot Gallagaher in the studio for analysis. He did not mince his words. 'Vidic shirt tug, clear penalty, impossible for the officials to miss. United penalty, totally against the spirit of the game. Duff attempts to hook clear, ball ricohets onto his arm, no intent, entirely accidental - no penalty!'

THANK YOU MR. WALTON

Angry Pulis blocks Begovic's Chelsea move

Furious Tony Pulis says he will block Asmir Begovic's dream move to Chelsea after the want-away keeper refused to play in his side's Carling Cup win against Shrewsbury on Tuesday night.

The Potters boss revealed that Begovic had told him on the morning of the match that he was unsettled by talk of becoming Petr Cech's No.2 at Stamford Bridge and subsequently he was not mentally fit to face the Shrews.

Angry Pulis said: "We won't be giving him away and doing a deal because of what he has done.

"I do not think our chairman Peter Coates will be pushed around. Obviously people have been blowing in his [Begovic's] ear.

"We will sit down and talk to him. I'm not happy with it. The club pay his wages and he has a responsibility to play for this football club. There is plenty of talking to do."

Begovic's startling decision came just a day after he said of the potential move: "Maybe there is people talking and stories being written, but at the end of the day you come to work and do your job."

Begovic has also been linked with Fulham as a possible replacement for Mark Schwarzer should the veteran complete his much-discussed move to Arsenal.
