Sheffield Wednesday player delivers warning to Fulham ahead of this weekend's clash

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday's Jack Hunt has encouraged the Owls to "shake Fulham up" this weekend and continue their fine form heading into the Sky Bet Championship's Play-Offs.

Carlos Carvalhal's side secured their place in the top-six last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town, and Wednesday head into the final game of the season with a free hit.

Wednesday face Fulham at Hillsborough this weekend for the Championship finale, and go into the fixture on the back of six consecutive victories, a run which has secured the club's place in the Play-Offs.

Carvalhal may opt to rotate his squad ahead on an intense Play-Off schedule, but Hunt admitted he wants the club to continue their momentum and shake up Fulham, a potential Play-Off opponent, he said: "The manager, you don't know what he'll do, he might rotate the team.

"As far as I am concerned, we want to go out and shake Fulham up and win the game and that can only stand us in good stead to carry the momentum on into the Play-Offs."

Wednesday are currently fourth in the Championship table, but their Play-Off semi-final opponents are unknown, with Carvalhal's side still able to finish third, fourth or fifth following this weekend's fixtures and still able to face Fulham, Reading or Huddersfield Town.

The League One star that Fulham should rival Arsenal and Chelsea for this summer

Fulham are flying at the moment as they approach the Championship play-offs.

All thoughts ahead of the summer will be suspended until after the play-offs but soon they will know whether they will be a Premier League club or a Championship club next season.

Either way, Fulham will be looking to bring in some new faces in the summer.

The Cottagers will probably be looking at defensive targets primarily as they look to tighten up at the back.

One target they should be pursuing is highly rated, in-demand Charlton Athletic starlet Ezri Konsa.

Ezri Konsa is both one for the future and one for the present: he is probably good enough to be competing in the Championship next season but he is a really exciting future prospect.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have all tracked the 19-year-old but Fulham could be the perfect next step for the talented teenager.

After watching the meteoric rise of 16-year-old prodigy Ryan Sessegnon, Konsa might be tempted to stay local and play for Fulham.

The England under 20 international established himself as a regular in the Charlton squad by the end of this season with some dominant and mature displays at centre half.

Despite his young age, Konsa is showing that he has the ability to compete at a high level in senior football and he will only get better.

Whether Fulham go up or stay in the Championship, this is a transfer worth considering and Konsa might be tempted to make the gradual step up to the Premier League rather than be one of many in a Premier League giant's academy.

Semi-Final On Sale

The Club can confirm ticketing information regarding the possible 2017 Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals.

Subject to the team preserving its current sixth place position with a commanding goal difference, the possible first leg is scheduled to be played on Saturday 13th May (5.30pm) at Craven Cottage.

Owing to the tight turnaround between the end of the regular season and the Play-Off Semi-Finals the Club would like to advise supporters that tickets for the first leg match at Craven Cottage are now on sale exclusively to 2016/17 and 2017/18 Season Ticket Holders (one ticket per person).

Ticket sales will be staggered, and 2016/17 Season Ticket Holders have until 9am on Tuesday 9th May to keep their existing seat, whilst 17/18 Season Ticket Holders are now able to purchase any other seats which are currently available.

From 9am on Monday 8th May, 16/17 & 17/18 Season Ticket Holders will be able to purchase an additional four tickets per person. At this time, Members will also be given a priority window to purchase a ticket (one per Member), before all seats are then released and made available to all Season Ticket Holders, Members and supporters with a Booking History from 9am on Tuesday 9th May.

Supporters are advised that blocks P1-P4 in the Putney End will be sold to home fans at this match, with the Mixed Area not available.

Prices for the possible Play-Off Semi-Final at Craven Cottage will be £20 adults, £10 concessions and £5 for under 18s.

Slavisa Jokanovic confident Manchester United and Liverpool target Ryan Sessegnon will remain at Fulham

The 16-year-old has been linked with a host of clubs but Slavisa Jokanovic has once again reiterated his belief Sessegnon will be a Fulham man next season

Slavisa Jokanovic has reiterated his belief that Ryan Sessegnon will be a Fulham player next summer despite interest from across Europe.

A whole hosts of clubs have been linked with the 16-year-old who has scored seven goals in his debut season for the Cottagers, taking the Championship by storm and causing the big clubs to sit up and take notice.

Manchester United are reportedly the latest to join Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Sevilla in the queue to snap up the young left back.

GetWestLondon understands that Sessegnon will sign a professional deal with the club when he turns 17 and his manager believes the club is the best place for him to learn and develop.

He said: "I am confident he will be a Fulham player.

"It not just depends on myself but depends on different sides too but I believe this is right place for him.

"He is a young player and he needs to learn - he needs the minutes with us and I believe he is in the right place for building himself and to be ready for an important step that is in front of him.

"All his life he is with Fulham and I am sure he is confident with us - I believe he has detected improvement and I believe he believes he's in the right place.

"In life it is normal to show ambition and want more things but I believe in this moment it is the right moment for himself to stay with us and improve his promise."

Steven Day To Leave FFCF

Steven Day, Chief Executive of Fulham Football Club Foundation, has announced his decision to leave the organisation to take up a role as Head of Participation at The FA. Steven, who joined in December 2008, will leave his role on 9th June 2017.

Tom Barry, Chair of Trustees at Fulham FC Foundation said:
"Having been responsible for Steve's initial recruitment and having worked with Steve for so many years it has been a great privilege to work with someone so capable and dedicated in our sector. Steve has played a key part in the Fulham Football Club Foundation leadership and driven the transformation of our Foundation, something we are all very proud of.

"On behalf of the Fulham Football Club Foundation I would like to wish Steve every success for the future and thank him for his time with us."

Steven commented:
"It has been a genuinely tough decision to leave Fulham after a number of years, however the chance to move to The FA to lead the football participation division nationally proved too good an opportunity to turn down. I can honestly say that my time with Fulham has been the most rewarding of my career and am immensely proud of what has been achieved over the last 8½ years.

Chelsea set to offload Fulham loanees in the summer transfer window

Tomas Kalas and Lucas Piazon have both been on loan at the club all season and they look set to be on their way out of Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are set to overload Fulham loanees Lucas Piazon and Tomas Kalas in the summer.

The pair have spent the season on loan at Craven Cottage and have played a vital role in leading Slavisa Jokanovic's side to the play-offs, but their time at Stamford Bridge looks like it's coming to an end.

Piazon signed for the Blues in 2011 but was only eligible to play for the first team after his 18th birthday when he obtained a work visa, while Kalas signed from Sigma Olomouc in July 2010.

Kalas has recently spoke of his desire to stay at Fulham next season if the opportunity arose , while Jokanovic is keen on making his loan deal permanent in the summer.

The 23-year-old Czech Republic international has made 35 league appearances for Fulham this season, while Piazon has made 18 but missed a month of the season after sustaining a fractured jaw against Cardiff.

Martin: Maintain Momentum

Having missed the last three matches through suspension, Chris Martin is determined to end the season with silverware at Wembley.

In his absence Fulham have all but secured their place in the top-six, and the striker is now keen to play his part as we aim to end our three year hiatus from the top flight.


"I'm eligible," Martin confirmed. "My loan spell runs out May 31st officially, so I'll be eligible for all the Play-Offs.

"I'm looking forward to it, I've had a taste of it before and it's not always been the most successful time for me so hopefully I can put that right this time around.

"I've not been fortunate enough to be promoted via the Play-Offs but everybody tells me it's the best way to go up.

"I've had a bit of disappointment over the last three or four years during it, so it will be extremely sweet if I do manage to taste success with this set of lads because I think we deserve it.

"We've played some of the best football I've seen for a long time in this division, so hopefully that can be rewarded with promotion."

The on-loan striker was watching on last Saturday as the Whites drew with Brentford to pretty much guarantee sixth spot, and he revealed he spent plenty of time seeing how rivals Leeds United were getting on.

"I had my phone out the whole game!" Martin admitted. "I'm not sure if the lads had any idea of what the score was, but I saw that Norwich had gone 3-0 up so we were cruising at one point.


"Then Leeds kept creeping back and got their equaliser with plenty of time left to get a winner, so that was a bit nerve-wracking.

"When I heard the crowd cheering I was still checking the scores and it said the game was still going on, but obviously the home fans had heard from some source and when they erupted there was just a massive relief."

Martin's controversial red card at former club Norwich City came at a bad time for the striker, who had put in an excellent shift in Fulham's previous outing.

"It was massively annoying," he admitted. "It was a place I used to play at as well which made it slightly worse.

"I thought it was harsh at the time, and my teammates said the same, but it's one of those things. The ref said he called it how he saw it, personally I didn't think there was any malice, I didn't actually catch him with my elbow.

"I know there was contact maybe with my forearm but there was no real intent, I was still watching the ball and I actually managed to get a head on it.

"It was particularly annoying because it was right at the business end of the season where I wanted to be involved in those kinds of games, every player wants to try and help get the team into the Play-Offs, so it couldn't have come at a worse time.


"It's been a tough couple of weeks but I've been working hard so I can come back and focus on the games we've got coming up thanks to the lads who have secured our Play-Off spot."

Fulham's final fixture of the regular season is a trip to Hillsborough on Sunday to face the only side who are currently on better form than ourselves.

"We've had a real good run towards the end of the season and that's what you want to do, maintain the momentum going into the Play-Offs," Martin explained.

"I know Sheffield Wednesday are on a very good run themselves, so we want to go there and test ourselves against another Play-Off competitor because there's every chance we could come up against them during the Play-Offs.

"We want to see what they're about and what they can offer so that if we do then have to play them again we'll be fully prepared for it.

"We've really come into our own over the last couple of months of the season. When it was on the line we stepped up and there were some great performances from the lads.

"Every single one of them has played some really top stuff, so that's a real positive for us moving forward."

Owls Playoffs Versus... Fulham?

It's Play-Off time again, a period last year where Wednesday secured their first trip to the capital in 23 years, and their first game at the new Wembley. Obviously, last time it ended in heartbreak, but this time the Owls seek to turn it around and seal our spot in the Premier League after 17 years in exile and truly celebrate the clubs 150th anniversary with England's elite in the top flight.

This is the first of a three-part series where we look at our potential play-off opponents. The first opponent we will look at is 6th-placed, Fulham FC. Catch our other articles on Reading - HERE and on Huddersfield - HERE.

The Craven Cottage side head to S6 this weekend and in a game a few weeks ago looked like would decide sixth spot, it now carries less importance with some Owls feeling that Carlos should even play a weakened side. Fulham may well do so as they can't improve on their sixth place finish after blasting past a choking Leeds United side, a real shame eh!

Season overview -

Fulham looked a risk in the 2015/16 season of dropping to League One but after Slavisa Jokanovic`s arrival towards to the latter part of last season the former Watford boss steadied the ship and retained Championship status for the Cottagers. Having a summer to build a side capable of competing in the second tier Jokanovic recruited seasoned performers at this level such as Scott Malone and Chris Martin amongst flair players like Aluko to add pace and skill going forward. The mix of hard work, pace and skill has paid off for the West Londoners as they along with Huddersfield have proved to be somewhat a surprise package in the league this season and occupy a playoff place ahead of tipped sides like Derby and Norwich City.

Fulham along with the top seven in the Championship have maintained a strong push away from mid table and interestingly allowed their managers to build and invest over summer and the January transfer window and despite dips in form haven't been tempted to replace their management and coaching teams.

Biggest win of the season -

Arguably Fulham`s best result of the season came a few weeks ago at the John Smith's Stadium, after trailing Huddersfield early on the visitors destroyed that goal advantage and took the game by storm running up a 4 - 1 lead by halftime. Allowing the away side to canter through the second half with little fuss. Elsewhere their biggest wins were both on home soil overcoming fellow playoff contenders Huddersfield Town and Reading 5 - 0.

Biggest loss of the season -

Fulham surprisingly went down at home to a Tammy Abraham lead Bristol City side who came and conquered in West London winning 4 - 0. The result stands out as an abnormality in Fulham story of the season as it was the first time the Cottager's leaked goals to that extent in the first half of the season and served to derail them until Huddersfield took the field at Craven Cottage to be soundly beaten 5 - 0 by the hosts clearing any memories of Lee Johnson side's visit to the capital the month before.

Results Vs Wednesday -

Fulham didn't enjoy playing Wednesday in the 2015/16 season losing to the Owls on three occasions. Once in the FA Cup and twice in the EFL Championship, remember that Ross Wallace screamer? This season aside from this coming Saturday Wednesday and Fulham played out an entertaining 1 - 1 draw at Craven Cottage a slick opener from Forestieri was cancelled out in the 91st minute by Malone to pinch a point off the Owls.

Scott Malone: Beating Sheffield Wednesday will give sides more reason to not want to play Fulham

The 26-year-old believes teams fear the expansive brand of football Fulham play and beating Wednesday will add more reasons to be worried about them

Scott Malone reckons beating Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday will give the other sides in the top six even more reason to not want to face Fulham in the play-offs.

Carlos Carvalhal's side are the form team going into the end of season showpiece, having won six of their last seven games, but that record is closely matched by Slavisa Jokanovic's team who have won five of their last seven.

Much has been said about Fulham's ability to score goals and for good reason - they're the top scorers in the Championship with 83 to their name while Wednesday have an ability to grind out wins, with their last five victories coming courtesy of a one-goal margin.

The two go head-to-head on Sunday at Hillsborough in what could be a dress rehearsal for a potential play-off semi final or indeed final, and Malone believes that if they get a win in the game it will give Wednesday, Reading and Huddersfield even more reason to want to avoid the Cottagers in the end of season show piece.

He said: "If we beat Wednesday on Saturday the rest of the teams in the play-offs are going to be thinking, 'well hold on a minute.'

"We're going there to win and I think their (Wednesday's) mentality in the play-offs is that they don't want to play Fulham so we go there and if we win the four games we get promoted.

"Teams don't want to play us because of the way we play - we're expansive and we score goals and lately we've been keeping them out too. which we didn't do at the start of the season.

"The way we attack is frightening and I think teams know they need to score two or three against us to win the game.

"Our away form is pretty good so I don't think anyone wants to play us over two legs."

Fulham on alert as Chelsea duo are set for summer exit

According to Get West London, Chelsea are set to let Tomas Kalas and Lucas Piazon leave the club in the summer.

Both players have been on season long loans at Fulham and the Championship outfit might revisit deals for the pair.

It is more likely that Fulham will pursue a deal for Tomas Kalas.

The centre back has featured thirty five times for Fulham over the course of the Championship campaign.

The Czech Republic international has impressed at Fulham and has previously stated his desire to make a permanent move as he continues to press ahead with their promotion bid via the play-offs.

Lucas Piazon, on the other hand, only managed 25 appearances in all competitions before breaking his jaw in February.

The Brazilian has played 6 times since his return.

Fulham may try to sign the Brazilian winger on a permanent deal but it is likely to depend on the price.

There's A Lot of Hurt – Leeds Boss Garry Monk Gives Up On Miracle Goal Swing To Overtake Fulham

Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has indicated he has written off the chances of his side enjoying a 13-goal swing in goal difference with Fulham, by explaining his men are "hurt" at missing out on the playoffs.

While Leeds are all but sure to finish seventh and not to be able to overhaul sixth placed Fulham on the final day, the race is not mathematically over as the Whites could overturn a 13-goal differential with the Cottagers.

If Fulham suffer a heavy defeat away at Sheffield Wednesday while at the same time Leeds dish out a mammoth drubbing to already relegated Wigan Athletic, the Whites could finish sixth.

However, Monk has indicated how unlikely he sees such a scenario being by conceding his side have missed out.

"We have looked at all the positives this season, when it comes to an end, we can be happy with the progression of the club", Monk told LUTV.

"There is still a lot of disappointment and hurt however on missing out on the playoffs.

"You have seen this season how competitive the Championship is and it is only going to get tougher, we have to be ready.

"We need a clear plan and we need to build on the foundations and progression made this season", Monk added.

Regardless of what happens in the game between Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham, Leeds will be looking to end the current campaign on a high by taking all three points from the DW Stadium.

They face a Wigan side who have already been relegated and will be playing their football in League One next term.

The 16-year-old wonderkid continues to be linked with a move to Anfield after a stellar breakthrough campaign in west London.

Despite his tender years, the left-sided player has played 25 times in the Championship this season, including 17 starts.

He has notched five goals and has helped Fulham into the playoffs, with Jokanovic's side the bookies favourites to join Brighton and Newcastle in the top flight.

With the final weekend of the Championship season upon us, attention is turning to the summer transfer window.

It's a chance for clubs to assess their squads and look to right the wrongs of the previous season in order to make the 2017/18 campaign a better one than this year.

Last summer, Aston Villa and Newcastle spent more than Spanish giants Real Madrid as £215million in total was splashed out across the second tier.

To put that figure into context that is more than the £190m spent in the French Ligue 1.

While the Magpies have won promotion back to the Premier League, Sunderland could yet try and get their wallet out to right their wrongs after relegation.

GetWestLondon has produced a handy guide outlining the key dates for the window.

When does the transfer window open?

The 2017 summer transfer window opens on Saturday July 1 for English clubs. In Scotland as well as France, Germany, Italy and Spain, the window will be open from June 9.

When does the transfer window close?

In Europe the deadline will be Thursday August 31, while British sides have until 11pm on Friday September 1 to complete deals.

What can we expect in west London?

All clubs will be active in the summer but some will be busier than others.

Brentford, unless they see their stars depart, will be relatively quiet in the summer window with a striker and midfielder the main targets for the Bees.

Fulham don't yet know what division they will be in yet. If promoted to the Premier League, they are likely to invest in order to strengthen their squad. If they don't go up, they will be hoping to keep hold of their stars.

QPR, as things stand, are likely to be the busiest side in west London after a difficult season which saw them only just secure survival with a game to spare.

Fulham have a number of players out on loan who are due to return to Motspur Park after the final game of the regular Championship season on Sunday

Fulham will not be able to call upon those players they have sent out on loan this season in this year's Championship play-offs.

Slavisa Jokanovic has sent out a number of his players on loan to various clubs around the country but he won't be able to use any of them in the play-off games, even if they return to Fulham after the end of their club's campaigns.

Rochard Stearman, Lasse Vigen Christensen, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Cauley Woodrow are all on loan at Championships clubs whose seasons finish this Sunday at the culmination of the Championship regular season.

Cameron Burgess, Sean Kavanagh, Jack Grimmer, Larnell Cole and Jozabed are all also out on loan, with the latter set to return in June from Celta Vigo.

Regulations state that a player who returns from loan before the completion of the league matches won't be eligible to play, and in this case the play-offs still count as Championship matches.

The EFL rules, Section Six state:

    53.1.4 A Player whose Standard Loan expires (or terminates) at the end of the Season of the Transferee Club but prior to the completion of the League Matches of his Transferor Club (where it is a Member Club) will not be eligible to play in any remaining League Matches for the Transferor Club in that Season

That means that Fulham will have to rely on the players that have got them to the play-offs to finish the job, something Scott Malone is relishing the chance of doing .

Sheffield Wednesday Are Going Up – Neil Redfearn Switches From Fulham Prediction

Former Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn believes that Sheffield Wednesday will win the Championship playoffs, admitting he has changed his mind, as he previously backed Fulham.

With one matchday left in the current Championship campaign, the playoff places have been effectively settled and Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Fulham will do battle for a spot in the Premier League.

Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday both picked up form when it mattered, at the business end of the season, as Leeds under Garry Monk slumped from fourth to seventh.

Ex-Leeds boss Redfearn always thought that if Fulham could sneak into a playoff spot then they would be dangerous, but now he has seen enough of Sheffield Wednesday to believe it will be the Owls who will go up.

"I thought Fulham all along, but at this moment in time I've just got a feeling for Sheffield Wednesday", Redfearn, assessing who might win the playoffs, said on Radio Yorkshire.

"I think Sheffield Wednesday are going to go up."

Wednesday have won their last six matches in a row, claiming consecutive three-point hauls when it mattered, and many believe the Owls have peaked at the right time.

The Owls have taken 19 points from their last nine league games, with Fulham collecting 17 over the same period.

Leeds collected just nine points.

Slavisa Jokanovic: 'Ryan Sessegnon should stay at Fulham'

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has said that he is "confident" of keeping Ryan Sessegnon at Craven Cottage for at least another season.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for the left-back, who has already established himself as a first-team regular with the Championship side, but Jokanovic feels that the 16-year-old should continue his development at his current club.

The 48-year-old told reporters: "I am confident he will be a Fulham player. It not just depends on myself but depends on different sides too but I believe this is right place for him.

"He is a young player and he needs to learn - he needs the minutes with us and I believe he is in the right place for building himself and to be ready for an important step that is in front of him.

"All his life he is with Fulham and I am sure he is confident with us - I believe he has detected improvement and I believe he believes he's in the right place.

"In life it is normal to show ambition and want more things but I believe in this moment it is the right moment for himself to stay with us and improve his promise."

Sessegnon has scored five times in 29 appearances for Fulham in all competitions.

Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has spoken out amid speculation linking teenage superstar Ryan Sessegnon with a move to the Premier League.

The 16-year-old has been sensational for the Cottagers this season with his performances at left-back and in attack helping Fulham secure a place in the Championship play-offs.

He's managed to score seven goals this term and earned a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

It's seen him linked with virtually every top side in the Premier League, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United among those persistently linked with the Fulham youth product.

However Jokanovic expects Sessegnon to reject any approach this summer so that he can continue his development at Craven Cottage.

The facts of how to win the play-offs: late charges, relegation-form winners and 20% chaos

What determines a play-off winner: form, big-match temperament, timing your run or sheer luck? Mike Holden crunches the numbers to bring you the maths behind the climax...

Arguably English football's greatest innovation of the past 30 years, the Football League Play-Offs remain unrivalled for drama. Barring a tweak to the away-goals rule, the format hasn't changed since 1990 – and why would it? The conditions are perfect for ding-dong battles and those breathtaking moments that punctuate the nerve-shredding tension. Year upon year, they deliver.

But so fine are the margins between success and failure, it's easy to buy into the notion that there's no rhyme or reason to who goes up and who stays down. "The play-offs are a lottery": it's one of football's biggest cliches and biggest myths. Yes, chance plays a significant part. But the probabilities are never equal.

Over the past 27 seasons, there have been 81 play-off campaigns, involving 324 teams, playing 405 matches. And FFT has scrutinised the data to bring you the underlying patterns that indicate why some teams have a much better chance of promotion than others.

Consider the four participating teams as A, B, C and D (from highest league position to lowest), here's what you need to know...

80% order, 20% chaos
In the early years, a school of thought developed that teams who finished highest would invariably underperform – most probably because, while the sample size remained small, each instance of Team A failing to win promotion was highlighted as an injustice compared to the way things used to be.

In fact, the opposite is true: on the whole, Team A wins promotion roughly twice as often as everybody else. In 81 campaigns, Team A has triumphed 31 times (38.2%) compared with 18, 14 and 18 promotions for the other three teams respectively. Broadly speaking, that's a 40-20-20-20 distribution. For every five campaigns, Team A will be promoted twice, everybody else once.

The 80/20 principle is another way of framing it, whereby we might conclude that the play-offs are 80% chaos and 20% order. If we take the 40% of Team A successes, you could argue that half of them (20%) are simply the upshot of Team A being overwhelmingly superior, while the other half (20%) are the result of chance (matching the probabilities of triumph for Teams B, C and D).

Which means that sides who have seen the automatic places locked up early - as in this season's Championship and League Two - have more to play for than just maintaining momentum and securing a second leg at home. It might also mean that Scunthorpe's last-day leapfrog over frustrated Fleetwood is more than merely academic. 

Previous meetings count for little

Another popular assumption is that one team has an advantage (be it psychological or tactical) over an opponent if they had the better head-to-head record during the regular season. However, the stats suggest previous results have virtually no bearing. In 193 examples where one team boasted superiority on aggregate over two league games, they replicated that success only 97 times (50.3% – pretty much a coin-toss average).

When you break that data down by team, a more revealing picture begins to emerge. Similarly to the 80/20 principle above, Team A replicates head-to-head success more than 70% of the time, whereas for everyone else that figure is consistently around 40% – in other words, they're actually more likely to lose than to win. So while Team A might be expected to repeat their triumph over the opponents they bested during the regular season, for Teams B, C and D a positive head-to-head might be considered a bad omen.

Indeed, 2016 provided more examples of this. Despite inferior head-to-heads in the regular season, Millwall overcame Bradford in the semis and Wimbledon beat Plymouth at Wembley - and there was a startling example in the Championship's semi-final between Derby and Hull. Over the two league games, the Rams won 6-0 on aggregate; it mattered little to the timely Tigers, who roared past them en route to promotion.

Disastrous form is no disaster

Another statement made so often that it has passed into accepted wisdom is that it's always the team in the best form that wins the play-offs. The figures show that it's simply not true – and there have been examples of the opposite being the case.

There's no doubt psychology plays a significant role at the end of a gruelling 46-game season, but too much is made of 'momentum' – a concept that's almost impossible to capture by any form of objective measurement. There is a pattern of success in accordance with late flourishes, but the difference is so slight as to be rendered almost meaningless.

Intriguingly, though, there's a small sample where teams have effectively gone into the play-offs in relegation form – taking fewer than 10 points from the final 10 matches – and they've performed no worse than chance. Of the 12 such instances, three teams have been promoted (Blackburn 1992, Grimsby 1998, Crystal Palace 2014) and three have finished runners-up.

The obvious explanation here is that expectations become so low as the regular season draws to a close, the pressure on the players is almost non-existent. The prize on offer is no less attractive, yet the 'no-hopers' are able to approach their games with freedom.

Big-match pedigree matters

A team's chances of a Wembley promotion are sometimes dismissed on the grounds of inconsistency, where silly results against weaker opposition deem them unreliable. But this isn't a trait to be overly concerned about here because such teams, by definition, tend to have stronger records against the bigger teams – and that's what really matters in the play-offs.

When measuring teams by their results against the three other play-off contenders and those already promoted via the automatic places, the data shows that those who have excelled against many of their closest rivals have a clear advantage: half of the dozen teams averaging more than 1.9ppg in "big games" have sealed promotion. Of last season's contenders, Barnsley (1.9) had the highest returns and duly went up.

The success rate falls steadily as those hauls drop towards 1ppg, but curiously leaps up again underneath that figure: of the 86 teams to have averaged 1ppg or less against rivals, 24 have achieved promotion and another 21 have reached the final. This was backed up again last year: Hull (0.9) and Wimbledon (0.83) went up, while Millwall (0.9) and Wednesday (0.7) reached Wembley.

Late interlopers rule (in the end)

Finally, beware of the free spirit. Late interlopers who gatecrash the Play-Offs in the final few weeks of the season appear to have a psychological advantage over those who have wrestled with the pressure of a promotion race for most of the campaign. But curiously, it's a phenomenon that doesn't rear its head until the final.

In 55 instances where a team has occupied a play-off or automatic berth for fewer than 12 rounds after Christmas, 25 (45.5%) have reached the final (44%). But out of those 25, a staggering 17 (68%) have clinched promotion at the Millennium Stadium or Wembley.

It happened again last season, not once but twice. Barnsley had spent just six matchdays in the promotion slots, AFC Wimbledon 11, but they came good when it mattered. Conversely, of the five promo-slot ever-presents, three (Brighton, Derby and Walsall) crashed out in the semis, before Plymouth lost at Wembley and Hull went up.

The best explanation, perhaps, is that the positive psychology stemming from this unexpected opportunity counts for little over two legs against superior opposition. But put those teams on the big stage in a one-off showpiece over 90 minutes, and the idea that destiny is somehow pre-ordained in their favour becomes much more relevant.

Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Look to Plan B at Left Back

If Ryan Sessegnon wants to stay at Fulham, Liverpool will need a plan B and it could be Ryan Bertrand.

With rumblings in recent weeks that 16-year-old left back phenom Ryan Sessegnon wants to stay at Fulham for at least another year or two, Liverpool could be forced to look elsewhere to strengthen at left back this summer, and today the rumour mongers have turned up Ryan Bertrand as a potential fallback option.

Liverpool have been linked with the 27-year-old Chelsea academy product before, and according to the Mirror and others, if they can't convince Sessegnon to make the switch to Anfield to be James Milner's backup they will instead move for Bertrand to compete with him for the starting job next season.

Bertrand looked a promising prospect at Chelsea, but after nine years and seven different loan destinations over nine separate loan deals, the Blues chose to let him leave on a permanent deal. He headed to Southampton, one of his loan clubs, in a £10M deal in the summer of 2015 and has started ever since.

It is also rumoured that in addition to interest from Liverpool should their plans to land Sessegnon fall through, Chelsea are considering an attempt to re-sign Bertrand to strengthen their own left back options as they prepare to head back into the Champions League next season.

In either case, Bertrand wouldn't arrive a nailed-on starter but would be given the chance to compete for the starting role on a Champions League side. Southampton, currently sat in ninth, will not be competing in Europe next season. Bertrand has 30 appearances and three goals for the Saints this season.

Why Tottenham Hotspur Is The Perfect Destination For This Sparkling Fulham Youngster

According to reports, Spurs have been linked with Fulham's 16-year-old starlet Ryan Sessegnon. Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has been applauded by many for bringing up some of the best Premier league youngsters, like Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Dele Alli, in the last two years. The players have not only done well in the league but have also laid a solid foundation for England national team's future.

Unsurprisingly given his age, Sessegnon has quickly developed a long list of Premier League admirers, with many reports linking Spurs, Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal with an interest, but he is ready to make a big statement on his future.

Sessegnon has put himself on the map with a stunning display against Newcastle in March with two goals in a 3-1 win at St James' Park and is planning to sign a new contract with Fulham on his 17th birthday, having already agreed a pre-contract deal.

The teenager has often been compared to Real Madrid's Gareth Bale, who spent a significant time with Tottenham Hotspur before his move to the Santiago Bernabeu. Sessegnon is known for his tremendous passing and his ability to find players from difficult angles. His vision is way more matured compared to his age and he is touted by many to become the next big thing in England.


He has scored four and registered two assists in 22 appearances so far, despite coming off the bench five times. He has also been called up for national duties. In 2016, Sessegnon played up an age group to represent England in the 'U17 Euros'. By October last year, he was seen making his debut for the Under-19 side.

Danny Rose is currently the first choice in that position for club and country and has pretty much owned it for some time now. His impressive displays at club level have led him to start in the England national team too. He is followed by Ben Davies at the club level, who is currently featuring for the team with Rose injured, but he has been unimpressive and may not be in the plans for Pochettino next season.

Of course, Sessegnon will not be expecting a direct entry into Pochettino's first eleven, but given the manager's reputation of handing down opportunities to young talents, Sessegnon will surely fancy his chances. However, it would hardly be a surprise if Tottenham, Everton, Liverpool and several other top flight teams soon get the chequebooks out to try and land one of the brightest prospects in the Championship

Brendan Rodgers should continue Celtic's Chelsea connection by signing Tomas Kalas

Thriving on loan at Fulham, Tomas Kalas needs a fresh start with Chelsea set to let him go - how about Celtic?

It's fair to say Brendan Rodgers has used his connections to great effect at Celtic. Helping hone a teenage Scott Sinclair's talents during his spell in charge of the Chelsea academy and then at Swansea, the Northern Irishman reunited with the winger (above) this summer when signing him from Aston Villa.

And, with Celtic cruising to the Scottish Premiership title with Sinclair the division's leading scorer, the deal was worked out perfectly for all parties.

Furthermore, Gianluca Di Marzio reported last month that Fabio Borini, another Rodgers favourite who worked with him at Chelsea, Swansea and Liverpool, could follow Sinclair to Parkhead with current club Sunderland relegated from the Premier League.

And perhaps Rodgers could maintain that Chelsea connection.

One-time Czech prodigy Tomas Kalas may have arrived at Stamford Bridge two years after Rodgers departed to pursue his solo managerial career.

However, with Get West London reporting that Chelsea could finally let him leave in the summer after four appearances in seven years, he jumps off the page as an ideal signing for Celtic.

Readymade replacement?

Fulham may have earned a place in the Championship play-offs thanks to their exhilarating attack rather than a watertight backline but they may not have got in the top six at all without summer loan signing Kalas holding the fort at the back.

Though excellent in the air, the 23-year-old is renowned for his ability to play out from the back, boasting an 86.7 per cent pass completion rate in the Championship this season. Therefore, there's no doubt he would be found wanting in Rodgers' methodical approach.

Furthermore, with both Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic linked with big money moves to the Premier League, Celtic may be in need of defensive reinforcements.

And Kalas may be the obvious replacement.

Fulham pair miss out on Championship manager and player of the month awards

Slavisa Jokanovic and Stefan Johansen were up for the gongs after a fine April but just missed out on winning the awards

Slavisa Jokanovic and Stefan Johansen have missed out on the Championship Manager and Player awards for April.

The Fulham pair were up for the awards after Jokanovic guided his side to 16 points out of a possible 17 in April, while Johansen scored four goals as he put in performance after performance for the Cottagers.

However, it wasn't to be as Jokanovic missed out to Carlos Carvalhal of Sheffield Wednesday, who Fulham face on Sunday in their final regular game of the season, while Johansen was pipped to the gong by Yann Kermogant of Reading.

Carvalhal lead Wednesday to a haul of 19 points from seven unbeaten games in April while Kermogant scored seven goals in seven games.

Fulham travel to Wednesday on Sunday and Jokanovic has challenged his side to grab their play-off chance with both hands ahead of the tie .

Jokanović's Sheff Weds Preview

Slaviša Jokanović insists feet are being kept firmly on the ground as Fulham prepare for the final game of the regular season.

Last weekend's draw with Brentford all but guaranteed a Play-Off spot for his side, but Jokanović is not one for getting carried away.


"It's not time for any celebration," he stated. "At the moment we haven't finished our job.

"We can be happy because we are virtually in the Play-Offs, but we have to be focused ahead of the work that is in front of us, and there are really important games in front of us.

"Mathematically we are still not in. A great chance is in front of us and I believe we are going to be in the Play-Offs."

Sunday's hosts Sheffield Wednesday are one possible opponent in the Semi-Finals, and when asked if victory would strike a psychological blow, Jokanović replied: "It's not a question about a message, it's a question about what we want to do.

"We're going to arrive in this historical place and play in front of 3,000 of our away supporters. We're going to try and concentrate on everything that is around us and choose a team that we believe can win the game.

"The situation is a little bit different. We are under less pressure. From another side, we are only virtually in the Play-Offs and we must be ready for everything.

"We don't go there for a vacation, a holiday, we're going to arrive at this important stadium with ambition and desire to win the game.


"We arrive at this game with a similar intention of winning. If you ask me if I'm going to change 10 players, I'm not going to do it.

"From one side because I don't have enough players, from another side because I don't want my people to believe we are on some kind of vacation or that the job is done.

"We try and win all the games, no reason exists to arrive at this game with a different mentality."

Fulham have competed well against the other Play-Off sides this season, winning three and drawing one of the five fixtures so far, notching 15 goals in the process.

But while he acknowledged that was a decent record, Jokanović stressed that it's what happens this month that matters.

"This is not important," he explained. "At the end of the day, when we arrive at this game, everything that happened in the past will count for nothing.

"All four teams are going to start with a 25 per cent chance of being the promoted team. These results that are behind us don't serve us so much for these games that we're going to play.

"We are in a good level of form, we play with confidence and we play with great ambition. I expect we're going to improve all aspects of our game for what's in front of us."

Sheffield Wednesday: Victory over Fulham would give Owls a 'psychological edge' in the Championship play-offs

Defeating Fulham on the final day of the regular league season can give Sheffield Wednesday a big psychological advantage for the Championship play-offs.

That is opinion of versatile Owls star Adam Reach as Carlos Carvalhal's side begin their preparations for the end-of-season shootout.

There is a possibility Wednesday could meet Fulham in the play-offs. Should Carvalhal's men claim a seventh straight league win for the first time since 1993 this weekend and Reading draw or lose at Burton Albion, the Owls will finish in third position.

Reading, Huddersfield Town and Wednesday have guaranteed their places in the play-offs and Fulham are almost certain to complete the quartet. Only a loss at Hillsborough and a Leeds United win at relegated Wigan Athletic, along with a 13-goal swing, would see the Cottagers fall out of the play-off positions. Whatever happens on Sunday, Fulham can't finish higher than sixth. Third will play sixth the semi-finals, with the first leg to be staged on Saturday, May 13, kick-off 5:30pm. If the Owls and Cottagers avoid each other in the semis, they could still face one another in the final at Wembley on Monday, May 29.

When asked if a victory over Fulham can give Wednesday a psychological edge, Reach told The Star: "Of course it would. A win always gives you confidence. "We are confident we have got enough to beat anyone in the play-offs. If we can get a win against Fulham and we do meet them later on in the semi-finals or final, it will give us that little bit of extra confidence."

Finishing third or fourth would ensure the Owls play at home in the second leg of the play-off semi-finals. "I don't mind whether we play at home in the first or second leg," said Reach, who arrived from Middlesbrough last August. "Hillsborough will be rocking either way. "We are just happy that we are in the play-offs. "We will enjoy Sunday and see who we get. We know we have the quality throughout the squad to get through.

"We just have to keep working hard and carry on focusing on ourselves."  The team secured their place in the top-six for the second year running after a hard-earned victory at Ipswich Town last weekend. The result extended their unbeaten run to seven outings. The Owls will be backed by a sell-out crowd at S6 against Fulham but Carvalhal may rest some of his senior stars with one eye on the play-offs.

Reach said: "I don't know what team the manager will put out but, with our squad, we will go into it wanting to win the game. "We want to make it seven wins in a row and eight unbeaten. We also want to beat Fulham for confidence just in case we meet them later on in the play-offs. We want to cause them problems." Despite their poor run of form in March, left-sided player Reach says he and his teammates always believed Wednesday would be involved in the promotion shake-up. "Nobody ever doubted we would get into the play-offs," he said. "When you look around in our changing room, we have so much experience. "We have a lot of guys who have experienced the play-offs, have promotions under their belts and won leagues. "Everybody has got each other's backs and we have the talent to win games." When asked how the Owls have turned around their fortunes, Reach said: "The starting eleven hasn't changed too much. The lads have got into nice rhythm. When the substitutes have come on, they have been hungry to get goals and contribute. "You don't get promoted with just 11 players. You get promoted with 23 or 24. Every player in the squad has played a big part. "We knew we were capable of going on a winning run. We are delighted to make it six in a row and seven unbeaten. "We were always confident in the changing room we would have a consistent spell. Although we were off the pace half a dozen games ago, we knew we had enough in that locker room to get the wins we needed."

Outgoing Jack Grimmer says thanks to the Shrewsbury faithful

The full-back made 58 appearances in his three loan spells in Shropshire, becoming one of the more familiar members of the squad despite never signing a permanent Greenhous Meadow deal.

The Scot was favoured for having a strong affinity with the supporters and the area, and played his part in Town's League Two promotion as well as helping the club survive for consecutive League One seasons.

He is one of six loanees returning to their parent clubs this summer, where his contract with Fulham comes to an end.

The 23-year-old said: "It's a sad time. I think I was 20 when I first went to play here, they were different times then in getting us out of League Two and, although I haven't played as much, I'm still happy to have been involved in League Two success and keeping us in League One again.

"You want to show that even though you're a loan player, you still care about the club and want them to do well. You really put the effort in and they've seen that.

"I'll definitely always be looking out for the club's results. Whenever I'm playing against them it'll be tough and very weird, especially at the Meadow.

"I'd like say thank you for all the support over the time. They've never been shy to voice their backing for me. Even the support when I was in and out of the team – they still stuck by me and I got a good cheer when I went back in.

"I hope I repaid them with my effort and performances and hopefully I'll see them soon."

Grimmer was in and out of Hurst's first-team after the boss' appointment earlier in the season.

He added: "I definitely see positive times ahead. Everyone's seen what's happened since Paul and Doigy have come in and if they'd have been there all season with that form we'd have been above mid-table.

"Now he's able to properly stamp his authority on the squad, it's definitely onwards and upwards."

Column: Should Fulham ring the changes for the Sheffield Wednesday tie?

Columnist Jack Collins discusses whether Slavisa Jokanovic should rotate his squad as they play Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday ahead of the play-offs

There's a lot of talk that the playoffs are all but confirmed, although I'm sure I can't be the only Fulham fan scared that I'm going to look at my phone at 12.10 on Sunday afternoon in Sheffield to see that Leeds are already 3-0 up at Wigan.

It only goes to add that slight extra edge to the question that seems to be on everybody's lips therefore, in terms of what Fulham should do about their starting lineup at Sheffield Wednesday.

There's obviously some players that pick themselves – Marcus Bettinelli should start between the posts, and few people would question sticking with the centre-back pairing of Tim Ream and Tomas Kalas, especially after the latter mentioned this week that it was game time together that was contributing to the increasing success that the two of them have had as a pair, of late.

There's also no way that the team can function without Kevin McDonald at the base of the midfield, with his screening presence as crucial as ever for Fulham's defensive solidity. That said, there can be questions asked of pretty much every other position.

Ryan Fredericks is such a potent offensive weapon down the right when he's on song that it's perhaps a brilliant time to give him a little rest, and bring in Denis Odoi for a game on the right. Given Fredericks' occasional tendency to have a little rush of blood to the head, I think this is a natural swap.

Scott Malone and Ryan Sessegnon have been rotating all year, but with the latter's ascension to left wing in the last few games, the former Cardiff man seems to have the spot all nailed down.

There's also no real look of fatigue about Malone, so chances are that he keeps his place.

Stefan Johansen, as I've discussed before, is Fulham's key link in the midfield, bridging the gap between defence and midfield, and there is no natural like-for- like first team replacement, but he did take a knock at the end of the Huddersfield game and looked slightly tired towards the end of last Saturday's derby, so it might be worth having a think about giving someone like Dennis Adeniran a run out, just to blood some potential replacements should any injury scares occur.

The same can be said of Tom Cairney. Whilst Cairney is Fulham's talisman and we all want to see him play, we could really do without him getting crocked, and it might be worth experimenting with someone like Lucas Piazon through the centre to see if he is up to task.

Some say this is Gohi Cyriac's moment, but I foresee Chris Martin starting on Sunday and leading the line, which I think is probably the best shout.

Fresh from suspension, his article this week on the Fulham website showed a man itching to get back into the side and prove himself, and Martin offers such an important dimension in hold up play which could have made such a difference against Brentford.

That alternative option will be crucial to Fulham in the playoff run and getting the big man scoring again would be an ideal situation for Slavisa heading into such a crucial period for the club. In the same vein, giving Kebano a start on the left would be a good move, allowing others to take a well-earned rest and keeping the squad ticking over as a whole.

My starting XI then, would be Bettinelli; Odoi, Kalas, Ream, Malone; McDonald, Adeniran; Kebano, Piazon, Aluko; Martin. Not only does it give us a wealth of options off the bench, but bloods some important players into the fold and opens up further options for the playoff push if any injury crises were to occur.

I think Slavisa will ring slightly fewer changes than that, if I'm honest, and all I hope is that for such a small squad, we have the fitness and ability to see out the rest of the season without any major injuries to worry about. If we stay at full-strength, there's no reason why Fulham can't take this season all the way to its dramatic climax.

Tomas Kalas: Fulham are in talks with Chelsea over a deal

Kalas has impressed for the Whites on loan from Chelsea this season.

He moved to Craven Cottage on a season-long deal last summer and has shone for Slavisa Jokanovic's side.

Starsport understands Fulham have now opened talks with Chelsea over a permanent deal.

Kalas, 23, has barely had a look in since joining the Blues in 2010.

He's made just two appearances for the club, spending most of his time at Stamford Bridge out on loan.

The defender is contracted to Chelsea until 2018 but he could now be set for a permanent stay with the club's west London rivals Fulham.

Kalas could earn a second consecutive promotion this season.

The Czech international was on loan at Middlesbrough last term as they went up in second place behind champions Burnley.

And with Fulham set for a spot in the Championship play-offs, the centre-back could repeat the feat with the Cottagers.

Why Liverpool target Sessegnon should reject Anfield speculation and remain at Fulham

The talented teenager looks to have the footballing world at his feet, but he should stay and develop his craft at his boyhood club

If they're good enough, they're old enough; an age-old mantra tied to the most promising starlets in the game who are entrusted with a spot in the first-team at their respective club. At present, they don't come much younger, or more promising, than Fulham wing-back Ryan Sessegnon, who at 16 is being linked with a summer switch to the Premier League elite.

Having made his first-team debut for the London club shortly after his 15th birthday, Sessegnon has established himself as a regular in Slavisa Jokanovic's Fulham side, making 29 appearances in all competitions to date, and became the first scorer in the Football League born after the year 2000 earlier in the campaign.

His majestic performances down the left flank at Craven Cottage this term have naturally led to top-flight interest, with Liverpool supposedly leading the race to secure a deal for the England Under-19 star. Manchester United and Tottenham are also thought to be interested in the winger's services, while Fulham have already supposedly rejected two offers from London rivals Arsenal. Should Sessegnon want to continue his development at a steady pace, though, without the pressure of trophy-expectant powerhouses, remaining at Fulham seems a sensible option. For now, at least.

At Fulham, he has a manager who trusts him. Jokanovic's belief in Sessegnon's talent has been the platform of the defender's success in his rapid rise, and he is said to be fighting behind the scenes to tie his future to the club. He understands the club's limitations, however, and success in the play-offs may be the deciding factor in whether or not the Fulham boss can keep hold of his star.

"In Ryan Sessegnon we are talking about one of the most talented young players in the country and he impressed many, many people in the games he played this season," Jokanovic said of his player, following his inclusion in the PFA Championship Team of the Season.

One of the people he has impressed is Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who is in the market for a long-term solution to his left-back problem.

While James Milner has proved an able deputy to the left-back berth, he does not possess the energy nor the threat in attack which Sessegnon provides - the Fulham wing-back has struck seven goals this season, his debut campaign, more than former Southampton and Tottenham defender-turned-forward Gareth Bale, who Sessegnon has widely been likened to, managed in his breakthrough campaign at St Mary's. He has also registered 15 key passes, three assists, and completed 26 of his 40 take-ons.

The teenager's pace is also a major asset, especially compared to the heavy legs of Milner, and he has proved time and time again that he has the positional intelligence needed to defend one-on-one with opposing forwards. Sessegnon is a player beyond his years, and there is little doubt he has the ability, and the attitude, to succeed in the English top-tier. Liverpool may be a perfectly suited club, too. However, with greater status comes greater responsibility, something which could detract from the sparkle in the defender's game as a 16-year-old, and a move to a top four club should be put on hold, unless a transfer included a loan deal back to Fulham.

"My ambition is to be the best I can be," Sessegnon told Fulham TV earlier in the campaign. "The opportunities I've had this season have been great."

Those opportunities are a result of raw talent and hard graft, something which Sessegnon has applied since signing for Fulham as a nine-year-old. However, circumstance has played a large part. Should Sessegnon opt to continue his development at the top of the Premier League he risks slowing his progress, while turning his back on what has so far provided a platform for him to flourish.

"On a personal level I just want help the team gain promotion to the Premier League where we belong," the winger continued in his interviewed with the club. Whether Fulham return to the Premier League is yet to be seen, as they prepare for one of the most unpredictable formats of competition in football - the Championship play-offs. Sessegnon, though, is almost certainly at the start of what is to be an extraordinary career which will take him as far as he wants it to.

It's reason enough not to rush the initial step up to what many consider as the greatest league in Europe, then, and sign a professional contract at Craven Cottage upon his 17th birthday.
