Title: Lost in translation
Post by: YoungsBitter on October 28, 2018, 06:08:17 PM
I wonder whether the real issue with Stuart Grey's loss is the impact on communications and the inability for Slav to get his message across. I struggle to understand what he means in his pressers and briefings myself. Late this August we brought in Seri, Anguisa, MLM (french) Vietto, Rico, Fabri (spanish) in place of Kalas, Targett, Piazon and maybe they are just struggling to get new players to play a hard system partly becuase it takes time to get it it understood and its not easy with such a bunch of languages. Scotty Parker does not strike me as a linguist and he never played much in Slav's system in his last system, nor is he a defender.

I also think no-one is telling him not to do some of his more rash selections and reaching subs. Grey had the experience and stature to do that, Scotty does not strike me in his first real coaching role to be able to say "maybe lets think about this sub, here is what is going on"

Your final paragraph is very relevent.
Maybe first out the door should be Parker.
To be a good ruler you need to have good council.
Slav can't have all the good ideas all the time. He needs to be able to call on his staff to challenge him and help give direction.

So the answer could be a good experienced defensive coach to assist Jocanovic, I suspect Jocanovic may be to proud/obstinate to accept that this is necessary

I'm sure he would welcome  any input that helped the team.

Why don't you think that Parker, with all his experience, can give worthwhile advice?

But in the end, it's the players who have to do it on the field. Though it might  be an improvement if Slavisa and Parker were to pull on their old boots and take the field in games - could they do worse?

Ooh here we go again. Last comment before I head back into my cave.
We had a similar debate last year. There was such a role at Watford which was enforced by a player delegation, notably Deeney as captain, to the owners. The era of confusion and miscommunication ran parallel with a winless streak after JOka started in the November. It all came good when walloping us at home but he was never in the frame for the longer term after that.

I'm gone.

Must have missed that, perhaps that is why he got them up but didnt get the long term role.  Anyway, we all like it when his system works so I am in favor of him getting help. Parker was in the team when we were attrocious defensively even if he personally tried to throw himself in the way of shots and was given lots of kudos for his guts and at 'em approach; I never liked his play and was so glad when under Joka we finally moved away from him being the pivot of midfield.

Shouting it louder was the time-honoured way of getting English understood.

....some of these hot house flowers need the proverbial squib up 'em.....
