Terrific performances since the group stage wobbles. Today was special, onwards and upwards to the final. Sunday is a work day here in Dubai but I will be "working from home".

Off topic but I was suppose to pull in to Sydney with the US Navy back in 87 or 88.Ā  Green Peace blocked us and protested so we left and went elsewhereĀ  :012:

Splendid, I watched every minute of it, men against boys.
Nothing like shutting the cocky loud mouth arrogant Aussies by playing them off the park. We certainly hit them for six. Well done England.

Well I hope it's a competitive match. I like both teams. Kane is a great player and comes across as a very humble and respectful person. Hope Guptill turns it around and plays a good innings.

What I also thought was great was how representative of modern Britiain the team was from Pakistani backgrounds, Irish captains, South African batsman heroes to West Indian quick bowlers amongst the rest of the Anglo-Saxon team. I am always proud to see people whose heritage is from elsewhere being part of our sporting heroes rather than defaulting to the "lands of my father", although having such a diverse population means that every nation seems to have a "home crowd" here. Well done you all!

It's a scheduling nightmare on Sunday what with the cricket and Wimbledon final plus the British Grand Prix, surely the powers that be should of realised and moved some of these events.

Not unusual in my experience, as neither Pakistan nor India are any good at football my friends from these backgrounds support England the land of their birth. However, if you grow up in these communities Cricket is almost a second religionĀ  and especially the rivialry between the two countries. In this sport these communities find pride in their heritage and the chance to put one over on their nearest and not dearest neighbours!

It's funny that although I was on the edge of my seat during the final overs shoot out I could not help thinking of the six where the NZ player caught the ball and the stepped back over the boundary, and that six including four overthrows deflected off Ben Stokes body.
Both within the laws of the game but oh so unfortunate for NZ.

Thought the Stokes deflection was off the bat when he was diving to stay in, which makes it that bit more fortunate.

I sometimes wonder why some people follow sports yes it was a fine performance by NZ, but can't people enjoy England winning, enough people rejoice when we dont

Agree totally. The only shame is that we had to beat a thoroughly gracious and sporting side like NZ in the final to win it.

...come to think of it, we'd already shut up the real foe!!!!!

Well done England but a really tough way to lose. I suppose there has to be a winner but to my mind they shared the spoils.

In the circumstances, it feels quite a hollow victory, tbh.

Not hollow for me, I'll take our good fortune as its a fine line between success & failure.

Absolutely, take no prisoners, somebody had to win it why not us, how would we have felt if it was the other way round. We snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, and that takes some doing. A great fighting come back.

It's to make up for all the Englishmen who have played for Ireland at football.

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted we won, I just felt that NZ were the better team on the day and didn't get the rub of the green. But that's sport.

None finer but as FFC73 says above, NZ lost less wickets.Ā

We scored more boundaries, had a better tournament run rate and also beat NZ earlier in the tournament. So yeah, I think we deserved it.

Thought the Stokes deflection was off the bat when he was diving to stay in, which makes it that bit more fortunate.
most defiently. Seen it a hundred times now, and stokes never once looked at the ball, or even tried to play it. Must one of those things. Fielder could have thrown it anywhere other than at his bat

Brilliant final.Ā  There will never be a cricket game to rival it ... never mind a world cup final. Massive respect to NZ who played brilliantly and were genuinely unlucky. We didn't play at the level we did to beat Australia and India but that was the epitome of gutsy and battling. Never thought I'd say this but would watch that in preference to ANY football game I've seen since attending our Wembley play off final.

G8 we won but... as NZ lost less wickets in their 50 overs why did they not win?

Ok, yes I get it because them the rules but just seems odd

ODI is a massive sport now especially in India so the rules have been changed over time to increase positive play. It is the same in football where back passing to the goalkeeper was banned and three points were given to a win. If wickets were used instead of boundaries then teams would be more Conservative in their play and excitement would be less.

That WC Final had a better screenplay than the best cinema fiction you could ever come up.Ā  Guptill the batsman playing the first ball and last ball of the match and being on the losing side ... incredible entertainment.

There were no losers really, it was a massive victory for cricket and sportsmanship. It takes two teams to create an epic match of Biblical proportions, pure theatre and whoever wrote the script was a magician.
On this occasion I shall not be sending any Invoice, maybe a credit note instead.
Sport is all about ifs and buts, you only have to have watched the men's singles final at Wimbledon to realise that, glorious victory and glorious defeat.
England are World Champions, nobody can take that away from us, we came back from the dead, that takes a real fighting spirit, and I am very proud of them, but although I appreciate it may not quite feel the same for you, you can be proud of New Zealand.
Success has many fathers, but failure can be an orphan, but yesterdays cricket match is an exception to that suggestion.
Now shortly we have a small issue to deal with the ball tampering cry baby whinging Aussies in the Ashes, there lies a backside I really do want to kick with my size 12 DM's. Then after we have given them some chin music, we charm their women and drink their beer even if it is a little warm, the beer that is šŸŗ

His mum is English and he has held a British passport since birth.
Ireland was not considered a full member of the ICC when he played for them, that happened later.

I believe this is why he is eligible to play for England.Ā

That England team must now start picking up awards for the rest of the year, I am thinking in particular of BBC Sports Personality of The Year and a number of knighthoods surely.

Not hollow, no. We won and i'm delighted.Ā  I am just recognising that we beat a very decent and sporting team by the narrowest of margins. It was a great final and a fantastic advert for the game of cricket.

I've been trying to think of anything better, but can't.
Not even 1966 can beat what I watched yesterday.
