I know we aren't privy to what happens on the training ground . But last minute , 25 yards from goal , you have 4 options.
1) let the best striker in the division take it
2) let the best midfielder in the division who has been firing them into the top corner from that range for fun take it
3) let one of the best left wingers take it with a reputation from that range
4) let the centre half have it who has probably never had a shot at goal in his time at the club take it
love to know the thought process on that one
Yes, I too had difficulty understanding why that kick went to Mawson, can't remember him ever having had success with shots on goal,
Incidently I thought at the end of the game that Mawsn 's performance was no better than average and concluded that he is not the dominating figure we need in that position.
Your first sentence should be enough answer to that.
Good thing that it wasn't Aboubakar Kamara that took the ball and tried to demand to take the free kick. Then he'd get run out of the country.
Agreed, was astounded by that. And it was a predictably poor free kick. No zip, too central, and too high.

Very underwhelmed with Mawson ,all season.
Hopefully Hector can bring something.
Thinking Cairney and his free kick against Leeds in the last minute.

Yes we are expecting a lot from Hector, hope we are not putting too much pressure on him.
Ream is playing well again and hopefully a Ream/hector combination will work well in the second half of the season.
we do not know what they can do on the training pitch so I have to assume mawson is a dab hand at free licks. BUT I wanted Knock to take it and felt it was not the right place for TC who rarely takes them..... I suspect Mawson had the element of suprise as the wall and goalkeeper must have been set for Knock not him, but in the end it was a dreadfully poor effort.
on the other hand, who knew he had sucha long throw and that is something that we could bring into play now and then.

That wasn't a free kick though
Had to be Knockaert. Free kick specialist with the balls to win a game in the last minute and soak up the love. Only at Fulham...
As the original post said we don't know what they do in training

Well I hope that Mawson regularly gets the free kicks on target in training, shame he failed to do that in the match.
I agree with the OP , thought it was weird!
On watching sky game in it's entirety, Mawson kept looking over to the bench as if to get agreement on what he was doing. I now take that as managerial approval- though at the time I thought there were plenty of others who'd have more of a chance.
As above, we've no idea what goes on on the training ground.
The corollary of the subject matter would have been even more skewed had Mawson scored and people would then be asking on a thread why he hasn't been involved in taking more pot shots, free kicks and even penalties. As for the long throw (and like Christie who takes long throws for Ireland) he hasn't got the best technique in the world but he does show promise that he could get there with a bit more practice.
If Mitrovic took it he would have blasted it into that Charlton defenders family jewels.
