Notes from October Meeting with FFC

On Monday 14th October at 12:30, the Fulham Supporters' Trust met with Fulham FC at Motspur Park.

The Club was represented by:

Alistair Mackintosh (CEO)
David Daly (Non Executive Director)
Mike McSweeney (Chief Executive, Fulham Foundation)
Aimee McKenzie (Operations and Venue Director)
Katy Brecht (Head of Ticketing)
Nicola Walworth (Supporter Relations Manager)
Carmelo Mifsud (Media Relations Manager)
Charlie Harris (Communications Assistant)

The FST was represented by board members:

Ian Clarke
Jerry Cope
Dan Crawford

HOW IT WORKS
Each topic below is raised by the FST in an attempt to discuss issues raised primarily by a number of our members. Individual questions from members are sent to the Club outside the meeting, and we encourage members first to raise these directly with the Club via [email protected]

If any member has raised an issue that it has not been possible to discuss in the time available then please do contact us again in good time before the next meeting.

We encourage members to provide us with as much detail as possible (e.g. time, duration, date etc.) when raising issues either with the Trust or directly with the Club.

TOPICS DISCUSSED
After informing the Club of the outcome of the recent board elections, and that the FST is nominating Michael Gregg to be our Safety Advisory Group representative, the following topics were raised and discussed:

    Match operations
    Ticketing
    FFCtv streaming
    Televised games
    London Living Wage
    Other issues and questions

MATCH OPERATIONS
Congestion underneath Hammersmith End

The Trust is concerned that, with the closure of the Riverside concourse, half time congestion at the Hammersmith End has become worse and now represents a potential safety hazard. This has been raised by a number of members who have difficulty accessing the lower concourse toilet areas and was considered to be particularly bad at half time of the Wigan Athletic fixture.

Recognising the constraints of space available, the Trust made a number of suggestions that might be considered to alleviate the problem including

additional stairs down to the lower concourse toilet area
catering stands in the lower concourse area
increased use of mobile catering ("hawkers")
mobile catering (non-alcoholic) inside the stand.

The Club responded that capacity at the Hammersmith had in fact reduced this season (due to the loss of block H8 and a reduction in capacity of H7) so that the ratio of people to space had not changed.  The Club also explained that the addition of further stairs to the lower concourse had been considered in the past but had been found to have a negative impact on space available and thus capacity.  The situation is regularly monitored by the Council for safety issues.

Following detailed discussion, and in the light of the current changed ground configuration, the Club agreed nonetheless to have another look to see what could be done, including the suggestions made by the Trust today.

Stewarding the stairwells
Supporters who have some difficulty with the stairs had reported that the positioning of stewards at the top of the stairwells, particularly in the Hammersmith End, prevents them from holding the rail at the top.  Some stewards explain that they are told to stand in these locations, although the Club said that this should not be the case. The Trust asked that stewards be reminded not to stand alongside handrails on stairs in the ground and the Club agreed to do this.

On The Ball
Following a request from the Trust, the Club agreed that it would be regularly checking the provision of On the Ball items before matches.  This follows reports in recent games of there being no supplies.

Cashless payments
In response to a question about the extension of cashless payments, the Club said this had gone very well (beginning with the Charlton match), with a record 96% of payments being cashless and only one complaint.

TICKETING
Match ticket prices and season ticket exchange

The Trust thanked the Club for a good range of prices and offers for the QPR, Derby and Hull games, in line with our previous advice and recommendations on Championship ticket pricing.  Everyone hoped this would be reflected in increased attendance.

The Club reported that it seemed possible that the Hull game would be the first one to trigger the season ticket exchange scheme and explained that the scheme would go live when only a small number of single tickets remained.

Questioned by the Trust on why the exchange had not been used for the Charlton fixture, for which it seemed that approximately 250 tickets remained on sale by Friday, the Club explained that there were more tickets available for sale than were visible on the website as some, e.g. family tickets, could only be bought over the phone. Additionally there were groups of tickets still available in the Putney End.

Sale of Putney End tickets
The Trust asked for an explanation of the sales strategy for Putney End tickets as, for some matches, they had not been made available.  The Club explained that for the first part of the season Putney End tickets had not been made generally available as they were being held back for potential season ticket sales.  For some matches they were made available closer to kick-off when there was limited availability elsewhere.

As season tickets sales are now almost complete, the Club said that unsold Putney End tickets would now be released, with limited availability, albeit sometimes only close to the game to avoid sales to away fans. However if season ticket holders wanted to buy tickets (only for Fulham supporters) earlier this could be done by phone in advance of a more general release, subject of course to availability.

The Club also explained that the capacity of the ground changed on a match by match basis in discussion with the Council depending on the state of building works, and this coupled with awaiting the announcement of TV games, did delay the sale time for tickets – but they were released as soon as these two issues were settled.

It was also reported that a total of over 1,000 Putney End tickets had so far been allocated to the Fulham Foundation across the games played this season, which was greatly appreciated by the Foundation.  The Trust is very supportive of this initiative.

Half Season Tickets
The Club said that is was unlikely that half season tickets would be made available this year.

Telephone waiting times
A number of Members reported long telephone waits to buy tickets on the Monday morning of the Reading game. The Trust raised this with the Club at the time to check whether a technical failure had occurred (it had not).  The Club explained how calls were diverted if unanswered, but 400 Reading tickets (approximately 25% of the away attendance) had been sold by phone in a short period of time on that Monday with every available operator being used. This was the busiest the ticket office had been since last Christmas.

Reported wait times of 40 minutes should not be possible due to the configuration of the phone system and if any supporters feel their phone calls were held for this length of time it is possible to run specific phone line checks to identify the reason (please contact the Trust in this case and we will put you in touch with the Club).

It was agreed that in future where waits were inevitable, Twitter should be used to communicate this, together with the number of tickets still available so that supporters could safely hold back. Indeed the Trust asked for the regular updates on away ticket sales to be re-introduced as they have recently been missing from the web site. The Club agreed to do this and has subsequently updated the web site for the Middlesbrough and Birmingham games.

The Trust asked whether online sales could continue past the postal time limit for away matches.  The Club said that this was not possible and also in the past supporters had been confused as to where to collect tickets, e.g. at Reading or at the Ticket Office

Loyalty points
The Trust asked why as many as 4 loyalty points were available for the QPR home game compared with fewer for some away games and only 5 for Middlesbrough away. It was explained that Club policy was for TV home games to get 4 points as a small thank you to watch the match in the stadium. Recognising the wide range of views on the use of loyalty schemes, the Trust informed the Club that it would be including this in its next Fan Survey.

FFCtv STREAMING
The Trust said that it had been made aware of streaming problems for the Reading game and that supporters affected had been disappointed with the lack of refunds. The Club said that there had indeed been an encoding issue, and that this affected some users and had been rectified well before half-time. Club staff were on site at the Craven Cottage studio base to oversee the operation and they subsequently had only received a handful of complaints.

Other problems could have been caused by supporters using the old app, or by hardware issues. The new app specifically for FFCtv is called the 'FFCtv app' on the Apple and Android app stores and is now the way to access FFCtv on mobile or tablet.

They said they looked at claims for refunds on their merits e.g. double booking, but in situations where most supporters had received service they could not tell which individual customers had problems without them being directly reported.

The Club repeated that where a problem was being experienced supporters should immediately contact FFC TV support for help.  As a reminder, the email address is [email protected].

TELEVISED GAMES
Whilst accepting the selection of games was outside of the Club's control, and that there were published guidelines on the timing of selection to TV, the Trust reiterated the difficulty this caused supporters e.g. three long distance away Friday night games already this season. The Trust asked if anything in such circumstances could be done to help with the cost of coach travel e.g. for the Swansea game. The Club agreed to look at this again, but was wary of favouring one game over another.

The Trust told the Club it was considering publicity on its own website as to when supporters could be reasonably confident games would not be moved.  The Club also highlighted that home matches do not go on sale until TV picks have been made.

LONDON LIVING WAGE
The Trust was concerned that Fulham was not included in recent publicity regarding football clubs accredited by the London Living Wage Foundation as paying the London Living Wage as this had been raised and discussed in detail previously. The Club confirmed that it is close to receiving the accreditation by the London Living Wage Foundation as it is already paying London Living Wage to all directly engaged and employed staff.

OTHER ISSUES AND QUESTIONS
The Club confirmed it was still intending to show time lapsed footage of the Riverside building, but not until there was something significant to show.  Cameras are recording progress of the works but will not be available as a live feed.

The Club said that no development was envisaged in the foreseeable future at either the Putney or Hammersmith Ends.

The Club confirmed that, like most discount schemes, it required season tickets to be shown to receive discount in the shop, although the Ticket Office, if not busy, would try to help out if supporters had genuinely forgotten their tickets.  The club shop is not linked to the ticketing system and so staff cannot routinely verify season ticket status without the physical ticket being presented to the card readers.

The Club confirmed that police investigations into the incident at Barnsley were still on-going.

In response to a request from the Trust, the Club agreed to provide more regular updates about players out on loan.

The meeting closed at 1420.

Thank you for your continued support of the Fulham Supporters' Trust

Is the pressure starting to build on Scott Parker at Fulham? The verdict

This article is part of Football League World's 'The Verdict' series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...

Fulham suffered a defeat at the hands of struggling Stoke City at the weekend, as Nathan Jones' side ran out 2-0 winners, lifting them off the bottom of the Championship.

The defeat saw Fulham drop to 10th in the table, six points off top spot and handed manager Scott Parker his third defeat of the season, which will be a concern for the new Cottagers boss as he looks to secure promotion this season.

So do you feel pressure is starting to build on Parker at Fulham following their latest defeat?

We discuss.........

Liam Drury

"With it being Scott Parker's first full season in management, then the pressure is bound to build on the young manager as he looks to improve Fulham's results following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

"Parker's Fulham side have become slightly predictable however, having used the same style of possession-based play across the course of the Championship season so far which has enabled other teams the opportunity to work Parker's side out and make life difficult for them.

"Despite having played at the top level, the former England midfielder is bound to be feeling the pressure under the collar as results at Craven Cottage begin to turn ever so slightly on the manager.

"Parker has the potential to be a good manager for Fulham however if results don't start to turn soon, he could find himself out of a job if he doesn't learn to deal with the pressure cooker that is management."

Ben Lang

"I think Parker will still be given plenty of time to improve Fulham's form, but he cannot afford to have many more afternoons like Saturday.

"The former midfielder is still developing as a manager and Fulham would have known this when they handed him the job. The fact he is still learning was evinced by the fact he set Fulham up with wing-backs, and this clearly did not work.

"Many Fulham fans would have been expecting their side to be firmly within the promotion picture at this stage, and the fact they have underwhelmed on this front will be concerning.

"However, Parker is clearly trying to develop a possession-based style of play at the club and there have been enough good performances this season to warrant the continuation of this project."

Luke Phelps

"As much as I like Scott Parker as a person and ex-pro, I do think that he and Fulham have under-performed this season.

"Although the Stoke defeat is the team's first since august, they've won just two in that time and have slipped down to 10th with the loss.

"On several occasions his tactical approach had been called into question – fans couldn't decipher what the formation was on Saturday, and Stoke thoroughly outclassed them.

"I hope he gets time though because i do believe that he'll come good at Fulham – it's easy to forget that it's his first full-season in management, and he'll be learning new facets with each passing game."

3 things we learned about Fulham after the Stoke defeat

Fulham's six-game unbeaten run in the Championship came to an end in their 2-0 defeat Stoke City, and some are questioning Scott Parker's tenure at the club.

Scott Parker's Fulham sit 10th in the Championship after Stoke got their second consecutive victory, as they look to be fighting back at the bottom of the Championship.

19-year-old Tyrese Cambell gave Nathan Jones' side the lead after 15 minutes when he burst through the Fulham defence, and finished like a seasoned pro to get his first for the club.

Fulham fought back but Adam Federici in the Stoke goal went fairly untroubled through the game, and Lee Gregory put the game to bed when he scored from the spot with ten to go.

It's cast plenty of doubt over Fulham's aspirations this season, and Parker will have plenty to ponder before his team host Luton Town on Wednesday night.

Here we take a look at three things we've learned about Fulham from the weekend:

Three at the back doesn't work

For the Campbell goal, and the incident that led to the penalty in the second-half, Fulham's defenders were found sprinting towards their own goal.

Stoke breached Fulham's defence far too easily on Saturday. Parker set his squad up in an unfamiliar 3-4-1-2 formation at the weekend, and the change left them exposed in the middle.

Joe Allen had a field day slotting the ball through the middle of Fulham's back three for Campbell to chase – Tim Ream's lack of pace presented a major vantage point for the Potters.

Expect Parker to quickly revert to four at the back for the visit of Luton.

Slow at the back

It wasn't only Ream who was blown away by Campbell's pace, Alfie Mawson was also left in the dust and so too were the tracking midfielders in Harry Arter and Harrison Reed.

Fulham have fast players in their ranks but none who will be mucking in too much defensively, and that was a major factor in the loss at the weekend.

The Cottagers would've been hoping to dictate the game, and pressed Stoke high up the pitch from the off.

Jones' side needed just 22% of the ball to put two past Fulham though, exposing Fulham on the counter throughout the 90.

Wasteful

A common talking point from Fulham's games this season has been how wasteful they can be.

At Stoke, Fulham had 78% possession. They also had 11 shots and six corners in the game, yet still failed to get on the score-sheet.

They've one of the best strikers in the league in Aleksandar Mitrovic, and proven scorers in Ivan Cavaleiro and Tom Cairney too, but none came close at the weekend.

Fulham have score 20 goals this season, so the ability is clearly there. But any Fulham fan will tell you that that number should be higher, and so too should their league position.

Parker needs his team to be more clinical in front of goal to be serious promotion contenders.

Brown a doubt for the Hatters trip to Fulham

Midfielder Izzy Brown is a doubt for Luton's trip to Fulham on Wednesday evening after coming off late on against Bristol City at the weekend.

The on-loan Chelsea player starred during his 74 minutes on the pitch, hitting the post in the first half and then setting up Harry Cornick's goal, as Town triumphed 3-0, before being replaced by Callum McManaman.

On his chances of facing the Cottagers, Hatters chief Graeme Jones said: "We'll have to assess Izzy, he hasn't trained today, so we'll have to see where he is for Wednesday.

"Luton is not just about Izzy Brown though, we need to be flexible and ready no matter who's available as a group and I've said that to the group as well today."

The potential injury is a blow for Town, with Brown showing real signs of his undoubted class at the weekend as Luton were too good for the Robins.

Talking at the weekend, Jones continued: "I was aware of Izzy's qualities from long before we signed him, but a bit like the defensive midfield player, it's taken two months to get Izzy fit, so that's where we've been as a club.

"I think you've seen Izzy Brown at his best today.

"Izzy Brown who was ill last Wednesday, but made sure he came in to play in the practice match on Thursday, because he didn't want to lose minutes, and I mean ill.

"That lets you know where his focus is and how much he wants to achieve here, his quality is never doubted at all."

There was better news about on-loan Aston Villa defender James Bree though, who came off at half time on Saturday.

When asked if it had been a tactical switch at the time, Jones said: "I'd love to say yes, but James just felt his groin a little bit, so it was a sub we had to make, it was forced."

Giving an update during this afternoon's press conference, the Luton chief added: "He's okay actually, that's the best news we've had today.

"He's trained, so it's just a bit of precaution at the weekend and our decision to take him off has worked well, so he's available.
Town's players applaud the home fans after beating Bristol City 3-0 on Saturday

"I've reminded them that they're only as good as their next game one not your last one.

"We've got an important three points up for grabs at Craven Cottage, who are a more than capable outfit."

Report | Swansea CIty U18s 1 Fulham U18s 5

Jay Stansfield's second-half hat-trick condemned Swansea City Under-18s to a 5-1 defeat against Premier League South leaders Fulham.

Charlie Clancy had given the young Swans a first-half lead at Landore.

However, the Cottagers came out firing after the break with Jean-Pierre Tiehi and Terry Ablade also on target in what was eventually a commanding victory for them.

Aiming to end a run of five straight defeats, the Swans opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Clancy tucked away the rebound after Ali Al-Hamadi's initial strike was well-saved by Luca Ashby-Hammond.

But it was all one-way traffic after the break with goals from Stansfield and Tiehi in the space of a couple of minutes turning the contest on its head.

Stansfield scored a third from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute and completed his hat-trick 12 minutes later.

And the Swans' misery was completed six minutes from time as substitute Ablade's fine individual effort gave free-scoring Fulham their 29th goal of the season already.

Swansea City U18s: Lewis Webb; Scott Butler, Luke McKendry, Jake Thomas, Luke Motruk; Erick Kenko, Ryan Bevan (capt); Bradley Gibbings, Charlie Clancy (Josh Thomas, 72), Morgan Clarke (Connor Shields, 72); Ali Al-Hamadi.

Subs not used: Tyler Evans, Jacob Edwards, Adnaan Moti.

Scott Parker acknowledged that Fulham weren't at their best at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts didn't outplay the Whites, but managed to sneak a goal in either half to claim a 2-0 win.

"We're disappointed, to be honest with you," Parker said afterwards. "I felt the nuts and bolts of it is that we weren't clinical enough in either box today.

"Certainly first half I felt as an attacking threat we lacked a real impetus about us. We controlled the game like we knew we'd have to as they'd come off the back of a good result against a good side [Swansea City].

"This team was sitting bottom of the league but they've got players who have played in the Champions League, there's Premier League pedigree in this team. That's something we spoke about before the game, that they're in a false position in the table.

"I felt we controlled the game in the first half, got into good areas, but when we got into those areas we lacked an impetus.

"Second half we addressed it and were more progressive. But in saying that, [we conceded from] two long balls, we defended poorly against them and we weren't clinical enough when we had our moments."

The loss at the bet365 Stadium brings an end to Fulham's unbeaten run, but Parker insists the important thing now is to see a reaction from his team.

"The international break probably came at the wrong time for us," he stated. "We were six games unbeaten and the break stalled that momentum.

"We had a bad result today, [but] games come thick and fast in this league. This league is very indifferent, we've seen that, very inconsistent, and we're part of that, no doubt. I don't think there's any one team who are really taking it by storm.

"Wednesday comes now, Luton at home, it's a big game for us and then we go to Boro.

"I've said it many a time, I've said it to the players, this is a young squad. When I say young I don't mean in age, I mean it's young in terms of when it got put together.

"Obviously along the way there's going to be a couple of bumps – today's a bump. It's not a head on collision, not something that's a massive issue, it's a bump.

"How we come out of this, how we bounce back from this, will ultimately determine what we're about and what we do this year.

"That's the challenge now, we dust ourselves off, we analyse the game and work out where we went wrong, and we come back fighting."

David Prutton issues verdict on Fulham's clash with Luton Town

Sky Sports EFL pundit David Prutton has issued his verdict on Fulham's next game at Craven Cottage, against Graeme Jones's Luton Town on Wednesday evening.

Scott Parker's side will be looking to bounce back after the disappointing defeat away to bottom club Stoke City on Saturday, which saw the Lilywhites drop down to 10th position in the Championship. It was also the first league match in which Fulham failed to score.

It was Fulham's first defeat in the league since the 24th August, and there will be no time to mull over the performance as the games are now coming thick and fast.

The Cottagers face another revitalised side in Luton, who claimed an impressive 3-0 win at home to Bristol City on the weekend, and they will be looking to pick up where they left off at Kenilworth Road. Graeme Jones's side have only lost once in their last four league games.

Writing on the Sky Sports Website, Prutton provided his verdict on Wednesday's game, stating that he believes it will be a routine 2-0 win for the hosts.

He said: "Fulham dominated possession against Stoke on Saturday but they had fewer shots and shots on target. At this point you have to wonder if Scott Parker is getting the most out of an extremely talented squad."

"Luton got a good win at the weekend and look to be doing enough right now to survive in this division, which would be massive for them after so long away from this level. Home win for me."

A win for Fulham will push Scott Parker's side back into the play-off mix, and will show to the rest of the division that his side can bounce back from disappointment, showing a strong mentality.

For the Hatters, back to back wins would push them clear of the relegation mix and put them firmly in reach of the top ten.

2 emerging Fulham talents that should be sent out on loan in January

Fulham's surprise 2-0 loss to Stoke on Saturday saw Scott Parker's team slip further away from the Championship play-off places to 10th position.

Despite having an incredible 78% possession throughout the match, Fulham failed to create enough chances and weren't clinical enough.

Yet Stoke were able to put Fulham to the sword as Tyrese Campbell's early goal and Lee Gregory's late penalty summed up a forgettable day for the Cottagers.

Prior to this result, Fulham had been in excellent form without losing in six matches before the international break and were playing attractive attacking football.

In order to play his style of football, Parker has been relying on a number of key players to play quick possession football with the likes of Joe Bryan, Tom Cairney and Alfie Mawson featuring in every game so far.

Due to this, a number of younger players have struggled for minutes at Fulham this season.

Here are two talents at the club who may be looking for a loan move in January.

Josh Onomah

Former Tottenham academy player Josh Onomah has hardly featured for Fulham this season after joining as part of the deal which saw Ryan Sessegnon move to Spurs.

The 22-year-old has one started just one game in the EFL Cup this season and has only made five appearances as a substitute in the league, limiting him to just 58 minutes of league football.

Onomah has shown his potential in the past, in the 2017/18 season, he was on loan to Aston Villa from Spurs and made 34 appearances for the club and impressed as an industrious midfielder.

However, Onomah hasn't had a consistent run of first team football since and only made 15 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last season whilst on loan.

A drop down to League One may help Onomah's development. He showcased his talents while at Villa and whilst playing for England at youth level, but a loan spell would help him to rediscover his form with a consistent run of games.

Lucas De La Torre

21-year-old Lucas De La Torre has been a regular in Fulham's development teams since 2013 when he was signed by the club from America.

The young midfielder made his debut for the club in 2016, starting a league cup game against Leyton Orient but has only gone on to make five apperances overall since his debut despite being part of the first team squad on a number of occasions, usually for league cup or FA cup fixtures.

De La Torre has a good record for the under 23 side, he has already scored two goals in three appearances this season and has played 37 matches for the development team.

The young attacking midfielder certainly has potential and is proving his worth through Fulham's youth system, but, the next step for De La Torre would be to experience football at a more senior level away from Fulham before his chance comes to break into the first team.
