Stockdale, Burn and Smalling were not acadmy products

Stockdale started his career with the Huddersfield Town youth system before joining York City's youth system in 2000, where he became a trainee in 2002. He made his first team debut on the last day of the 2002–03 season. He established himself in the team during 2004–05 and in 2006, following loan spells at Wakefield-Emley and Worksop Town, was released by the club. He moved to Darlington and in his second season with the club played in the play-offs. He signed for Premier League club Fulham for an undisclosed fee in 2008,

Burn made his debut in the Football League for Darlington in 2009 and joined Fulham at the end of the 2010–11 season, having made 19 appearances for Darlington.

During his youth, Smalling played for the Millwall academy before joining non-League club Maidstone United. After establishing himself in the Maidstone United first team, he signed for Middlesbrough in May 2008. However, shortly after joining Middlesbrough, Smalling had his contract with the club cancelled after raising concerns over homesickness. Soon after, in June 2008, he signed for Premier League club Fulham.

Always thought Jack Grimmer would turn out top notch, but another who flattered to deceive sadly.
Not even on the bench for Wycombe.

i'm not sure what happened to Grimmer, injuries/massive loss of form and confidence I guess. He was in the PFA team of the year in 17/18 whilst at Coventry, then released at the end of the next season.

could easily see him going back and being a regular in the Scottish Prem.

The one I used to love watching was Liam Donnelly, gave his all and put himself about every week. Has seemingly turned himself into a midfielder at Motherwell, and think he scored 8 goals in 7 games earlier in the season earning himself a couple of Northern Ireland caps.

ah used to love going down to watch the young lads destroy the so called big teams every week :(

He only played 4 games as a 16 yo there for Aberdeen, think they tried to get him back on loan when at Coventry, but said he wanted to stay down here.
I did read other week Port Vale were interested, I think he played on loan there from us if I remember rightly.

Thank you for that lovely piece of research, elgreenio.  A very fascinating insight into how difficult it is for any young player of promise.  Perhaps we really do need the return of proper reserve team football leagues supporting first team football although I guess that would raise costs for clubs who don't have money or wouldn't want to spend too much of it on them.  I really used to enjoy watching the 'reserves' and youth teams play if and when I could get to a game.

He's struggling to score in a bad side.
