Post by: Steeeeeeeeeed on March 22, 2020, 08:06:49 PM
Incase anyone missed it  on Ch4 last night, it is rather great I reckon  (I also saw it in the cinema when it came out) and is on 4OD for a month...

For me he is the Greatest Footballer I have ever seen, and it's a great story.

Footballing wise not for me. Unfortunately I remember that arrogant Cheating Drug Addict.
Although I have often tried to forget he ever existed.

He certainly got some brutal treatment from the opposition and Terry Fenwick certainly didn't cover himself in glory in the 1986 WC encounter.  What was remarkable about him in footballing terms was his balance and - according to the clips in the documentary - just how hard he tried to keep on his feet.

Eventually hubris and cocaine got the better of him.  The appeal to Neapolitans to support Argentina against Italy in 1990 WC as a way of giving 'something' back to Maradona inevitably fell on deaf ears.

It's a pity he couldn't keep his hands to himself.

I have to be with WM on this, however good he was, and he WAS one of the greats (not up to Pele standards imo though), his whole legacy was spoiled by his arrogance following the goal against England in 1986 in Mexico. It was not the fact he handled the ball into the net, but more so what he said afterwards to justify himself doing so:
"a little with his head, and a little with the Hand of God"

I know he apparently 'apologized' some years later admitting he cheated, but was totally unrepentant as far as I'm concerned.

He was in the riverside stand once about 10 years ago. He was walking down the steps as verybody was going in, I couldn't resist shouting "handball" at him, it got a big laugh.
A very unpleasant character .

I just couldn't watch it due to his blatant cheating- then claiming that some higher power had knocked it into the net.
Never liked the horrible little man.

That was my problem too. I just couldn't bring myself to watch it because he is so very unpleasant.

I don't like the guy at all but watched the documentary and I've got to say it was an amazing insight in to a deeply flawed character, with no attempt at all to gloss anything over, and it made for compelling viewing.

Highly recommended, even if you think like most of us do that he's a piece of work.

Perhaps I'll take your advice and watch it then,

We watched it last night after reading the recommendations on here and thoroughly enjoyed it too for the reasons you stated Burt.  I was incredulous when he suggested the Neopolitans support Argentina over Italy in the World Cup!!  On the pitch though, hand of God moment aside, he reminded me of George Best, another flawed genius, the way he tried to stay on his feet.  Anyway an excellent watch, most welcome in these restrictive times...

Now I'm interested in the documentary too after seeing the high praises here. I'm not the biggest fan of the big Diego, though.

If you wait by the banks of the river long enough, you will watch the bodies of your enemies float by.

Good sight of QPR flag ,belonged to couple of great lads from Thame
one was called Milo.
Actually went to the final bunked in with a few fellow England fans .
Jumped a fence at the end of the game and was on the pitch
with 2 other England fans.

His 2nd goal that game (often called the "Goal of the Century") is, as the name implies, simply unbelievable. He went 60 yards and never touched the ball with his right foot. Amazing.

There again ,the England players stood around like tailor's dummies
and just fell over when he went past.
If ever a professional foul was needed !!

We should have drawn the game in the last minute a cross and inches away from
converting it.
