Fabrizio Romano: West Ham keen on Napoli centre-back Nikola Maksimovic

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, West Ham United have opened talks with Serie A giants Napoli for centre-back Nikola Maksimovic.

While there isn't any agreement yet between both sides, negotiations are ongoing.

Gianluca Di Marzio has revealed that the Hammers have tabled a bid for the Serbian international, with Fulham also keeping tabs on him as manager Scott Parker looks to bolster his defence after shipping 10 goals and picking up zero points in three Premier League games.

Everton have also been linked with Maksimovic, with CalcioNapoli24 claiming in August that he could be reuniting with manager Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are still in need of a centre-back following injuries to Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite, and the 28-year-old could be back on their radar.

West Ham, Everton and Fulham would have to pay between £14 million and £19 million to have a chance of signing Maksimovic before next Tuesday, and the Serbian is expected to be sold if Kalidou Koulibaly remains at the club.

He also has just a season left on his deal, and the Italians can't afford to lose him for free next summer when they have the chance to cash in on him before the deadline.

Scott Parker burdened by Tony Khan as Fulham scramble to avoid embarrassment

The Fulham owner took to Twitter to apologise for the performance in the 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa

It's never a good sign for a manager when an owner feels compelled to come out and apologise for a performance. When it comes so early in the season, it feels even more unedifying, like a parent apologising for the mess their child has made.

But here Scott Parker is, already being circumvented by Fulham owner and director of football Tony Khan after just three matches. The 0-3 home defeat to Aston Villa, leaving the west London side bottom with no points to their name, led to an evening of activity from Khan's official account.

"I apologize to @FulhamFC supporters for our performance tonight," he began, before going through the issues he has had in bringing in defensive reinforcements.

"We've looked to add centre-backs since Wembley, I'm sorry we haven't yet as 2 got COVID + we lost a Free we thought was close + had another issue with a 4th CB. I promise players in + better efforts from this squad."

Parker had not seen Khan's social media posts by the time he sat down for his Zoom press conference. There were plenty more by the time it had concluded as Khan replied to disgruntled Fulham fans quizzing him on both the wisdom of getting in a fifth choice signing and, well, tweeting.

"It's the world we live in, isn't it?" huffed Parker when the tweets were put to him, the parent-child dynamic flipping in front of us. "People have the platform to tweet what they want to tweet. He's the owner of the football club and a director of football and feels it's his responsibility."

Most demoralising for Parker was that Khan is right. Not so much in how he has expressed his dismay, but certainly what he was apologising for. The season started just over a fortnight ago and it already has the hallmarks of a rough slog for Fulham.

Straight after the play-off final win over Brentford, the pair discussed what they would need to avoid this situation. The lessons from a disastrous 2018/19 season, finishing 19th with just 26 points after £105 million spent on recruits to avoid that very situation, were to be learned. After an unspectacular yet successful promotion campaign, investment was to be focussed on solidifying the backline.

Yet with the transfer window closing on 5 October, no central defender has been signed. The desperation to bring some in was heightened after three of those on Fulham's books – Denis Odoi, Tim Ream and Michael Hector – spent Monday evening casting perplexed glances at each other.

"The first time they're in our box they score a goal," Parker bemoaned on this latest defeat to an accomplished Aston Villa. "The second time they're in our box they score a goal. We got up to their goal very well... but they defended it."

Fulham are a reminder of the predicament of modern football: where the reward for success in promotion is to be introduced to the existential crisis of trying to survive at a cost. Whatever happens in the next week, the £25m they have already spent has already shown to be insufficient.

A dart at Marlon Santos of Sassuolo was going well before a failed medical, though Parker did not confirm if Santos was one of the options that had tested positive for Covid-19, as per Khan's tweets. But new faces will not automatically yield new results, certainly not straight away. And it will worry all at the club that they have conceded three goals in the last two games against fellow promoted side Leeds United and the 17th-best Premier League side last season through a lack of structure as well as quality.

That, in particular, is on Parker. After a season in the Championship where he seemed to get by on the superiority of his squad, he must find a way to make this side more able and durable. Otherwise, this could get embarrassing.

Three rounds in, it is clear goals are very much on the agenda in the Premier League. And it does not take a great leap of mathematics to extrapolate 3-0, 4-3 and 0-3 losses into relegation of record-busting proportions.

They conceded 81 goals when they went down in 2018/19 and currently have 10 goals against their name with 35 matches to go. At this rate, they won't just "better" that tally, but also replace Derby County as the worst of the worst when they shipped 89 in a 38-game season.

"This team needs to evolve and to do that we need players in. If not, we'll work as we have worked and we'll try and improve things and keep pushing along," Parker added.

"It was the same last time we were in this division and I certainly learned from that."

With that, a downtrodden Parker left his seat to comprehend the week ahead. As well as dealing with a team in disarray and finding value in a transfer market unsettled by the pandemic, he must do so with a boss who already has itchy fingers.

Jamie Carragher launches scathing attack on Fulham's director of football

'Shut your mouth, get on with it'

Fulham suffered their third loss in three games since returning to the Premier League on Monday night, as Aston Vill effectively put the game to bed before half-time without getting out of first gear.

The goals came far too easily for Villa, who only just survived last season, while Fulham looked like a a team in desperate need of some new defenders - just not as many as last time.

Following the game, Fulham's director of football and son of the owner, Tony Khan, felt the need to address the embarrassing defeat on Twitter and engage with fans' concerns.

"I apologise to Fulham supporters for our performance tonight," he tweeted.

"We've looked to add centre-backs since Wembley, I'm sorry we haven't yet as 2 got COVID + we lost a Free we thought was close + had another issue with a 4th CB. I promise players in + better efforts from this squad."

He continued in a second, threaded tweet:

"I should + will apologise repeatedly for that performance. I'm sorry everybody. We all need to do a better job. Everyone at the club for the past year worked really hard to get the team up, & now we need to work significantly harder to stay up. I promise better efforts than today."

Jamie Carragher was less than impressed, slamming Khan for speaking about these issues publicly, highlighting that he was in charge when Fulham spent £100m+ in 2018 and still went down.

"Clown, getting involved in that," Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

"The performance was that bad we were actually laughing at some of the defending.

"Fulham are going down, I've never been more certain about anything in my life. They need to buy two, maybe three, four defenders."

Speaking more specifically about the tweets, Carragher said "It never works, that. It always ends in tears."

"What would Scott Parker think about that? What do those lads who are playing at the back think about that, who have maybe got to play midweek, got to play at the weekend?

"Just shut your mouth, get on with it, keep your head down."

Who is Tony Khan? Fulham's co-owner who also runs a wrestling company

Fulham co-owner and director of football operations Tony Khan found himself in the news on Monday, when he took to Twitter following Fulham's insipid performance in their 3-0 loss to Aston Villa.

Khan apologised to Fulham fans for the performance, and promised 'better efforts' from all at the club.

Now, some might think it is odd for a football team co-owner to be so forthright after a game. Well, it should be pointed out that Khan isn't a usual football team co-owner.

He also is co-owner of the NFL side the Jacksonville Jaguars and the co-owner and CEO of All Elite Wrestling, the number two wrestling promotion in America.

He co-owns all these sports franchises with his father, Shahid Khan.

Methods have worked to an extent

Khan's time at Fulham is perhaps the most interesting. The fact that the London side got promoted to the Premier League last season shows that the methods developed by him are working.

The appointment of Scott Parker to manage the team was a gamble, but it worked. However, the results so far this season will have put Khan under pressure to sign players before the transfer window closes.

Do Khan's comments put Parker under pressure? Probably not. After all, it was always going to be a struggle for Fulham this season.

They do need to get some points on the board soon though. It's early days, but they don't want to get cast adrift at the bottom of the Premier League.

That is why it is so important that Khan is able to bring in some good signings, especially at centre-back.

Signings will help Fulham's cause no end

If he can do that, then Fulham will at least have a chance of staying up this season.

Juggling three different sports at the same time can't be easy. Although perhaps it isn't as bad during these unique times. You can do business via Zoom perhaps.

Time is running out though for Khan and Fulham to get some deals done that can help propel Fulham up the Premier League.

Judging by his comments though, work is already underway to get the signings in that can improve the team. That can only be a good sign, although the proof will be in who comes in.

Still, it is interesting to see Khan be so opinionated after a game, but he had to be really. It was a dreadful performance by Fulham.

Fulham eye move for Watford centre-back to solve defensive issues

Fulham are 'still interested' in signing Watford centre-back Craig Dawson, as per Sky Sports (live transfer blog, 29.09.20, 20.03).

The Cottagers are desperate for defensive reinforcements after a tough start to life back in the Premier League.

They could now throw Dawson a top flight lifeline in an attempt to tighten up their backline.

Dawson, who is 30 years old, only moved to Vicarage Road last summer but couldn't prevent the Hertfordshire side getting relegated to the Championship.

The experienced defender started his career in non-league with Radcliffe Borough before he was snapped up by Rochdale in 2009. After an impressive campaign with them in League Two, West Brom signed him in August 2010 but loaned him back out to Rochdale. Dawson scored a combined 22 goals from defence in his two seasons with the Dale.

He had a brief loan stint at Bolton Wanderers in 2013 before establishing himself as a key player at the Hawthorns.

Dawson spent nine years in the Midlands, making 225 appearances and chipping in with 15 goals.

Watford came calling last year after he spent the year before in the Championship but he finds himself back in the second tier again now.

However, Fulham could change that and may lure him to Craven Cottage before the end of the transfer window.

In other Watford news, their winger Ismaila Sarr has emerged on Manchester United's radar and they could make a move for him over the coming weeks, as per The72.

Ademola Lookman: Fulham to sign RB Leipzig winger on loan

Watch Brentford vs Fulham live on Sky Sports Football from 5pm on Thursday with kick-off at 5.30pm

Fulham are close to signing RB Leipzig winger Ademola Lookman on a season-long loan with the deal set to be completed in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The 22-year-old Englishman was left out of Leipzig's squad for their 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, with the German club saying he was not selected "due to ongoing transfer discussions".

Lookman has only made one start since his £22.5m permanent move from Everton last summer, having previously impressed on loan in the 2017-18 season when he scored five goals in 11 Bundesliga games.

He started his career with Charlton before moving to Merseyside in 2017 - stepping up from League One - and made 48 appearances for Everton across all competitions before trying his luck in Europe.

He now looks set to return to the Premier League with Fulham, who have lost their opening three matches and find themselves bottom of the table on goal difference following promotion via the Sky Bet Championship play-offs last term.

However, Scott Parker's side have progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, where they will face west London rivals Brentford on Thursday - live on Sky Sports Football.

'It's not something I agree with, it's not helpful': Scott Parker hits back at Fulham chief Tony Khan after he apologised to fans on Twitter after Aston Villa defeat and promised new signings

Fulham suffered a 3-0 home loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Monday
Scott Parker has responded to comments made by owner Tony Khan
Khan delivered an apology and explanation for Fulham's defeat on Twitter
Fulham chief said he had struggled to recruit centre-backs since promotion
The businessman promised better efforts from coach Parker and his squad

Scott Parker has admitted Fulham owner Tony Khan's comments promising new players and improved performances were 'not helpful'.

Parker hit back at the Cottagers chief after he took to Twitter to apologise to fans following Monday night's 3-0 home defeat by Aston Villa.

The result has left newly-promoted Fulham rock bottom of the Premier League after just three games, and the young manager is unhappy with the owner's decision to air his thoughts in public.

Fulham owner Khan issued an apology on Twitter after the club's latest heavy defeat

He said on Tuesday: 'It's not something I agree with it, it's not something that is helpful.

'The one thing I'm disappointed with is that he apologised for the performance. The other bits, it is what it is.'

Parker would not be draw on transfers with Fulham facing a race against time to add to their squad before the window closes next Monday.

He added: 'We were in the market since Wembley. The people in the club are working their hardest. Hopefully we can get some help.'

Khan revealed his struggle to bring in new players to boost the club on social media straight after Monday night's defeat.

The businessman tweeted: 'I apologise to Fulham supporters for our performance tonight.

We've looked to add centre-backs since [winning promotion at] Wembley. I'm sorry we haven't yet as two got COVID-19 and we lost a free we thought was close and had another issue with a fourth.

'I promise players in and better efforts from this squad. I should and will apologise repeatedly for that performance.

'I'm sorry, everybody. We all need to do a better job. Everyone at the club for the past year worked really hard to get the team up and now we need to work significantly harder to stay up. I promise better efforts than today.'

The Cottagers have conceded 10 goals in three Premier League matches this season, losing 3-0 at home to Arsenal on the opening day before Leeds again exposed their defensive shortcomings in a 4-3 thriller.

Goals by Jack Grealish and Conor Hourihane left them with a mountain to climb after just 15 minutes in their latest ominous defeat, with Tyrone Mings all but ending the contest just after half-time.

Boss Parker said he had not been aware of the details of Khan's failed attempts to bolster his options.

The rookie coach admitted: 'I wouldn't know. I honestly wouldn't know. I think the people in the places to be at this football club make them decisions.

'I've highlighted where I think we need to improve. I've highlighted that straight after Wembley. Not just defenders, just where we need to improve in this team.

'I think in terms of defending we weren't good enough tonight and we've not been good enough for the first three games this season.

'I think we all know we need to address that. It was an area we've certainly brought up and it's an area that everyone at the football club hopefully can see as well, to be fair.

'I thought we played very, very well for large parts, but the first time they came into our box they scored, and the second time they scored another goal and you just can't give up goals like we have and expect to win games in this division.

'I think you see that at the other end for them. We got up to their goal pretty well but they defended it.'

Scott Parker responds to Fulham chief Tony Khan's tweets assessing Aston Villa defeat

Fulham boss Scott Parker had responded after club chief Tony Khan offered an apology to supporters following their dismal defensive display in their third Premier League defeat of the season

Scott Parker does not agree with Tony Khan's apology following another poor Fulham performance.

The Championship Play-off final winners have lost their opening three Premier League fixtures of the season - the latest of which coming at home to Aston Villa on Monday.

Following a stream of discontent from fans on social media, director of football and vice chairman Khan said sorry for the recent displays before insisting that he is working on bringing in new defenders.

Parker, who took over at the club ahead of their relegation during the 2018/19 season, has since stated that he doesn't agree with the apology offered up by his colleague on social media.

Khan used his Twitter account to say: "I apologise to Fulham FC supporters for our performance tonight.

"We've looked to add centre-backs since Wembley, I'm sorry we haven't yet as 2 got COVID + we lost a Free we thought was close + had another issue with a 4th CB. I promise players in + better efforts from this squad."

As reported by The Athletic, the head coach has since replied by saying: "It's not something I agree with it.

"It's not something that is helpful. The one thing I'm disappointed with is that he apologised for the performance. The other bits, it is what it is."

Tony, 37, is the son of Pakistani-born American billionaire Shahid Khan, who bought the club from Mohamed Al Fayed in 2013 and has overseen two relegations and two promotions.

The younger of the Khan family juggles his role at Fulham with his position as President and CEO of professional wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling as well as co-owner of NFL franchise Jacksonville Jaguars.

He went on to say on Monday: "I should + will apologise repeatedly for that performance. I'm sorry everybody.

"We all need to do a better job. Everyone at the club for the past year worked really hard to get the team up, & now we need to work significantly harder to stay up. I promise better efforts than today."

Parker, who spent time as a coach at Tottenham before returning to Fulham, added of the poor start to the season: "We've lost three football matches at this present moment in time.

"I understand where the narrative is, where the noise is. Me sitting in my position, I need to keep that level.

"The way we played last night, we played well. We controlled large parts of the game.

"Of course, I'm not silly enough to understand that areas in our games are costing us. But there are some areas which are pleasing. Errors are costing us matches, but we need to keep improving."

Denis Odoi and Tim Ream got Fulham relegated last time and Aston Villa defeat shows they need more than them in defence
A 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage means Scott Parker's men have now conceded 10 goals and lost all three of their opening Premier League fixtures

CRAVEN COTTAGE — In a week's time, TV presenters will don their special tie, reporters will gear up for a long day spent on the phone from a cold car park and players' agents will prepare themselves for something akin to Christmas – except this one hasn't been cancelled: transfer deadline day.

Of the two managers on show at Craven Cottage on Monday night, one can expect to be a bit busier than the other up until an don that day. Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has already done plenty of business, shoring up the side that narrowly avoided relegation on the final day just two months ago with £75m worth of talent. Three of those – Emiliano Martinez, Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash – started to give his side a fresher look, something severely lacking from his opposite number Scott Parker's line-up.

Perhaps Brazilian centre-back Marlon would not have started against Villa, but it was a blow Fulham could ill afford when news broke on Monday morning that the Sassuolo defender had failed a medical after a £13m move had been agreed. A former Barcelona player (three appearances) with 41 Serie A games to his name, it is easy to see why Fulham were excited to have got their man, until they realised they hadn't.

Parker instead went for quantity over quality, starting three centre-backs after shipping seven goals in their opening two games, but sometimes no number of bodies can overcome reality: Denis Odoi and Tim Ream were two of Fulham's regulars when they conceded 81 times en route to relegation, starting 60 games between them.

Michael Hector, a midseason arrival in the Championship, looked largely lost in between them. When Jack Grealish ghosted across the front of the defence and was put in to score the opener inside five minutes, Hector threw his arms in the air, baffled as to why Villa's best player, the fulcrum of their attack, was not tracked. In fact he was left to his own devices. Odoi neither followed him or alerted Hector to his presence. He was more likely to get a shout from the endlessly vocal Tyrone Mings at the other end.

"Fulham made Aston Villa look like Bayern Munich," Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane rather flippantly grumbled at half-time, which detracted somewhat from the nicely-weighted pass of John McGinn for the first goal or Grealish's intelligent run to create the second. Either could find themselves in a Champions League team at some point in their career, which is significantly more than can be said of their opponents.

If Parker's only problem was in defence, he would at least be able to tell director of football Tony Khan that Marlon, or indeed the next on the list after Marlon, would be enough to solve his defensive issues, but the midfield is hardly replete with fresh-faced talent either.

Tom Cairney, club captain and closing in on 200 games for the club, does not provide enough energy in midfield to deal with the movement between the lines, just as he did not in 2018-19. Both he and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa seemed to be taking a "hands, face, space" approach to marking with McGinn the grateful beneficiary of some persistently socially distant midfield play. It was rather summed up when the two men in white clattered into each other in possession to an audible "oof" from both.

There were bright points for Fulham. A bright point, maybe. Joe Bryan's deployment at left wing-back produced several crosses worthy of better than Aleksandar Mitrovic offered them. Even when Fulham did get the ball in the net, it was a petulant shove from the Serbian striker that saw referee Stuart Atwell rule the goal out.

It rather summed up Fulham's night: a weak shot, a goalkeeping error and an ultimately self-inflicted anti-climax. Just three games in, they already may have a week to save their season. On this showing, they need a hell of a week.

Scott Parker gets full backing of Fulham board despite poor start to the season

The Fulham manager has retained the full backing of his bosses despite starting the season poorly with three straight losses.

After the humbling defeat to Aston Villa on Monday night, Cottagers owner Tony Khan took to Twitter to apologise publicly for his team's performance but also promised to bring in new additions before the transfer deadline.

Khan revealed in his tweet that they had missed out on five of their targets, with claims that two had tested positive for coronavirus during transfer talks. But there are possibilities that the Cottagers could renew their interest in those targets should they recover in time.

Despite switching to a back five formation to shore things up, Fulham's defensive issues were on show against Villa last night, giving room for Jack Grealish to score after just four minutes into the game.

Things got worse when Conor Hourihane and Tyrone Mings added goals either side of half time with none of Scott Parker's backline taking responsibility to address the problem. That made it ten goals conceded in the last three Premier League outings.

With just a few days before the transfer window closes, Parker, when asked about the team's challenges bemoaned the lack of leadership and says everyone is well aware of the need to address it.

"In terms of defending, we weren't good enough," Parker said. "We've not been good enough for the first three games this season. We need to address that. We all realise we need to address that.

"We need to bring some defenders in with personality, with experience. It's not new.

"I don't want to be over-critical of the boys because they've been first class for me. But these boys need help as well. When you move up from the Championship to the Premier League, the team evolves. You need to bring players in that can make the squad better and push the other players on.

"We all recognise that. You don't have to know the game inside out to see that really."

Scott Parker was appointed as caretaker manager at Fulham during the 2018/2019 season following Claudio Ranieri's sacking before getting the job fulltime.

Fulham are close to the season-long loan of ex-Everton winger Ademola Lookman (left)

The Bundesliga side snapped up the 22 year-old, who started his career at Charlton, after a previous successful loan spell at Leipzig.

But his second stint has not gone to plan with Lookman starting just once in the league last season.

Fulham have lost all three of their league games this season since their return to the Premier League.

They have strengthened their goalkeeping department with the addition of Alphonse Areola, their full-backs by bringing in Antonee Robinson, Kenny Tete and Ola Aina and in central midfield with Mario Lemina. Harrison Reed and Anthony Knockaert also had their loan moves made permanent.

And vice chairman Tony Khan confirmed they are determined to continue strengthening, particularly in defence, after their humbling 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Monday.

He said: 'I apologize to Fulham supporters for our performance tonight. We've looked to add centre-backs since Wembley.

'I'm sorry we haven't yet as two got Covid and we lost a free we thought was close and had another issue with a fourth centre-back.

'I promise players in and better efforts from this squad.'

Parker unhappy with Fulham owner for apologizing for loss

LONDON (AP) - Fulham manager Scott Parker has criticized the club´s American owner for going on social media to apologize for the team´s display in its third straight loss to open the Premier League season.

Minutes after the final whistle of Fulham´s 3-0 loss to Aston Villa on Monday, Tony Khan wrote in successive tweets that he was sorry about the performance of Parker´s team and promised "better efforts" in future games.

"People have the platform. You own a football club, you can decide how you want to communicate or send a message out," Parker said. "It´s not something I agree with, it´s not helpful from that sense, but like I said that´s down to the owner and how he sees it.

"There´s one thing that I´m disappointed with and that´s how he´s actually apologizing for the performance and that is something that I don´t agree with and he shouldn´t have."

Fulham is in last place after three games of its first season back in the top division, having also lost 3-0 to Arsenal on the opening weekend and then 4-3 at Leeds.

Fulham has already conceded 10 goals - the club let in a league-high 81 when getting relegated in the 2018-19 season - and Khan went into detail in his tweets about the failed attempts to sign more center backs during the transfer window.

While he said the players need to work "significantly harder to stay up," Parker chose to rally around them.

"At 3-0 down, they were still trying to work as much as they can to try and get us back in the game and for that I don´t agree with him (Khan)," Parker said.

"I´ll be the first to have an issue with my squad and my team and my players if I felt that that was something which needed to be criticized. So I have an issue with that and obviously that´s something which I don´t agree with."

Fulham next plays on Thursday in the fourth round of the English League Cup against Brentford in a repeat of last season´s Championship playoff final.

Report: Fulham want to sign PL veteran who Brendan Rodgers called a 'warrior'

Ryan Bennett could be set to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan again with Premier League strugglers Fulham interested, according to the PA News Agency, provided via FourFourTwo.

With Scott Parker shaking his head, Tony Khan tweeting furiously and the Cottagers already being compared to that record-setting Derby County team from 2007/08, this already feels like one of the most important weeks in the club's history.

Fulham have just six days to bring in much-needed defensive reinforcements.

However, a deal to sign Marlon from Sassuolo appears to have fallen through following a failed medical, while Bayer Leverkusen's Germany international Jonathan Tah can obviously aim far higher than a side that has lost all three Premier League games by 3-0, 4-3 and 3-0.

Bennett wouldn't be a signing to hog the headlines but the 30-year-old has a proven track record in the top flight of English football, with Norwich City, Leicester and Wolves.

Bennett has fallen down the pecking order at Molineux and, after failing to make the matchday squad for any of Wolves' three games in 2020/21, PA reports Fulham could offer the veteran a fresh start via a short-term spell at Craven Cottage.

"I was delighted to get Ryan in," Brendan Rodgers told Leicester's website in February after signing Bennett on loan.

"He was a young player at Peterborough, he was a big talent, and he's gone on to have a really, really good career. He's a warrior, he knows the game and he defends well."

If Fulham want to make a fist of things back in the big time, signing a battle-scarred "warrior" would be a step in the right direction.

Fulham in 'meetings' for defender – London club move to yet another target

As Fulham continue their quest for a defender, here's one more centre-back linked to the Craven Cottage side today.

Journalist Gianluigi Longar, from Sport Italia, says the Whites are now interested in Sampdoria player Omar Colley.

He claims there have been 'meetings' with Fulham, although there are no details on how much the London club are offering for the 27-year-old.

Longar also points out that other clubs who were interested in the player back in January, such as Newcastle United, and should get some 'attention' as well.

Fulham's search for a new defender has become pretty public, especially after they failed to sign Marlon from Sassuolo.

Following the club's defeat to Aston Villa on Monday, club president Tony Khan promised fans they've been looking for centre-backs the whole summer, and couldn't fix the problem yet.

Sampdoria spent €8m to sign Omar Colley from Genk two years ago. He's been a regular starter for the Serie A side since then, so we shouldn't expect him to be cheaper than that.

Fulham target deal for Barcelona youngster to help solve major flaw

Fulham have been linked with a move for Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo who appears surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.

Cottagers boss Scott Parker is in dire need of reinforcements, having watched his charges lose their first three Premier League games.

Consolidation is always the watchword for a club returning to England's top division and Parker must act now.

The west Londoners sit bottom of the table, having conceded 10 league goals, with Parker aware of what lies ahead.

Todibo, 20, arrived at Barcelona in 2019 but has only ever been on the fringes, with just four La Liga outings to date. He made two appearances for the Catalans last term before a loan move to Bundesliga club Schalke in January.

The France Under-20 ace did enjoy more game time but made only four starts among eight games played. The Gelsenkirchen club opted not to activate a €25m purchase clause and the youngster was back in Spain in the summer.

New Barca boss Ronald Koeman does not see Todibo in his plans and so an exit seems inevitable.

The transfer window will shut on October 5 and therefore any suitors must act fast to secure the French Guiana-born starlet.

A report from AS suggests Fulham have made an enquiry and hope to land their man at a knockdown price of €20m. It remains to be seen if the Spanish giants play ball. However, a switch to the Thames would seem the most sensible move for all concerned.

Parker sounding out former club

Parker's search for defensive help has seen him turn to ex-club Tottenham for centre-back Juan Foyth.

The Argentina international has been left in the wilderness by Spurs chief Jose Mourinho.

Having joined the north Londoners from Estudiantes in 2017, he has struggled to nail down a first-team spot, with just 11 starts to his name.

The 22-year-old has made it clear he wants to remain in Europe and so a move across London might be what he needs.

With little top-flight experience Foyth could be a gamble – but Fulham have reached the point where they need something to kick-start their season.

State of Fulham defence bodes well for Wolves options in Gameweek 4

Fulham 0-3 Aston Villa

Goals: Jack Grealish (£7.0m), Conor Hourihane (£6.0m), Tyrone Mings (£5.0m)
Assists: John McGinn (£5.5m) x2, Hourihane
Bonus Points: Hourihane x3, McGinn x2, Mings x1

A clinical Aston Villa maintained their perfect start to the season at the expense of a Fulham side seemingly hell-bent on getting their relegation form in nice and early.

Four wins on the bounce – two in the league, two in the Carabao Cup – have marked the Villans as an early-season form team, which is just as well when they've got Liverpool and Leicester to come next.

But there is a confidence and continuity about this club now – Villa have strengthened the squad this summer without upsetting the balance of the team – that suggests last season's desperate struggle to stay up will not need repeating this time around.

Fulham coach Scott Parker switched to a three-man defence for the encounter, but his preference for playing high and wide remained intact. That was a tactic the visitors exploited ruthlessly from the get-go and offers some crumbs of comfort to anyone still in possession of Wolves attackers for Gameweek 4.

It took less than five minutes for Villa to find a way through that new-look backline, with Jack Grealish (£7.0m) running onto John McGinn's (£5.5m) ball over the top and steering it past Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) in the Fulham goal.

The strike was, according to boss Dean Smith, straight off the training pitch.

The pair then combined for Conor Hourihane (£6.0m) to double the advantage after 15 minutes, with the midfielder sweeping the ball home from an intelligent McGinn lay-off. The former Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley midfielder has now registered more attacking returns than any other Villa asset since the beginning of Project Restart (five).

That made it two shots, two goals for Villa – a question of quality over quantity that neatly summed up the entire game. Fulham outshot the visitors 16-12, but managed just two attempts on target to Villa's five and created no big chances while their rivals carved out four.

If the game wasn't up after 15 minutes, it certainly was just after half-time when Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) sprang the Cottagers' high line/offside trap attempt and was left all alone to score from Hourihane's set-piece ball into the area.

It was the final proof, if it were even needed, of Fulham's current defensive shortcomings. Indeed, conceding ten goals across the first three Premier League matches of a season would have equalled a nasty little record – if West Brom hadn't had a 'hold my beer' moment and already let in 11 thanks to Saturday's 3-3 draw with Chelsea.

What's making matters considerably worse for Parker's men is their inability to look the part at the other end of the pitch either.

This was their second blank in three league matches and the three goals they scored against Leeds were as much to do with the Yorkshire outfit's own defensive issues as Fulham's attacking prowess.

The 20%-owned Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) was easily the most popular Fantasy Premier League starting asset on show at Craven Cottage, and he led the way for attempts (six), all of which came inside the area.

All of them were also headers, but only one found the target and none truly troubled visiting keeper Emiliano Martinez (£4.5m), whose most eye-catching save involved tipping a late Joe Bryan (£5.0m) effort onto the bar.

His opposite number, Areola, had the misfortune of picking the first three of Villa's attempts on target out of the back of his net, but he was worked by Mings and McGinn when the game stretched out late on, while striker Ollie Watkins (£6.0m) twice went close with earlier efforts.

Fulham did manage to score at one point when Bobby Decordova-Reid (£5.5m) pounced after Martinez spilled Aboubakar Kamara's (£5.0m) shot, only for VAR to entice referee Stuart Attwell to a TV screen to decide that Mitrovic had fouled Ezri Konsa (£4.5m) as the first shot came in.

The late introduction of new signing Bertrand Traoré (£6.0m) demonstrated the extra firepower Smith now has at his disposal, but he was quick to talk up a second straight clean sheet post-match.

Both Konsa and Mings have now scored this season, with the latter also providing a Gameweek 2 assist. The pair sit second and third in an FPL defenders table topped by Leicester's Timothy Castagne (£5.7m), who's played a game more. They are also backed by four clean sheets in their last six Premier League matches, three of those coming at Villa Park, where they play three of their next four fixtures.

But investing in Villa's backline, or indeed any of their players, is just not happening from what we can see of the FPL transfer market.

Despite their stellar start to the season, none of their assets can be found in Gameweek 4's top 30 transfers-in, presumably thanks to those two tough fixtures mentioned earlier in this piece.

The Villans' schedule eases considerably from Gameweek 6 onwards, however, with a trip to Arsenal probably the trickiest encounter of a 10-match run.

Fulham's match-ups are more mixed, but the FPL reception to their current form is not – Mitrovic is currently the fourth most-sold player heading into Gameweek 4 as managers still invested in Parker's men look to cut and run.

Fulham XI (3-4-2-1): Areola; Ream, Odoi, Hector (Le Marchand 58); Bryan, Tete (Kamara 39), Zambo Anguissa, Cairney; Cavaleiro, Decordova-Reid (Kebano 78); Mitrovic.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-2-1): Martínez; Targett, Konsa, Mings, Cash; Hourihane (Ramsey 76), Luiz (Nakamba 87), Trézéguet (Traore 84); McGinn, Grealish; Watkins.

Parker's Brentford Preview

Scott Parker is hoping to again use the Carabao Cup as a means of returning to winning ways.

Fulham travel to Brentford for our Fourth Round tie on Thursday, keen to respond to the disappointment of the Aston Villa defeat.

"It's a good opportunity for us," Parker told fulhamfc.com. "The Cup's been good for us in that sense, after some poor results – I wouldn't put it down as poor performances – poor results, it gives us a good chance to go out and play in a very competitive game against a very good team to keep working on the things we need to work on.

"It gets players minutes, but we also want to try and get a result."

The match comes less than two months after the sides met in the Championship Play-Off Final, and Parker knows the Brentford players will want to give a reaction after their Wembley heartbreak.

"They're obviously going to be motivated, it was a big disappointment for them after a very good season," he stated.

"We both got to the final hurdle and one of us had to have that disappointment, and thankfully it was Brentford.

Scott Parker

"They'll have the bit between their teeth, maybe something to prove, so it is going to be a tough game."

Aside from replacing Ollie Watkins with Ivan Toney, it's much the same Brentford side that we faced at the beginning of August.

"They're very similar, they've not changed a lot," Parker explained. "Nine times out of 10, the players who are brought in for each position in their squad are normally quite similar, so Toney is very similar to Watkins.

"We know from last year the quality Brentford possess. They're a very good team, and I don't see anything different now.

"They've lost Watkins, but other than that their squad has stayed together.
Scott Parker on the touchline at Wembley

"It's a very, very good squad and a very good team, and it's going to be a tough game for us, but one we're looking forward to. We need to get back on it and go again."

Having made a flying start to his Fulham career, Kenny Tete's forced withdrawal on Monday was a big blow.

The severity of his injury remains to be seen, while Parker will also be missing a couple of midfielders this week.

"Kenny's just had a scan so we're waiting on the results of that to see exactly where he is, and we'll go from there," he revealed.

"Mario Lemina and Harrison Reed have both picked up injuries as well so Brentford is definitely too early for them, maybe Wolves is as well."

Cottagers turn sights away from City ace

Ben Godfrey was a target for Fulham with the Premier League club understood to have held conversations with Norwich City about the availability of the defender.

The 22-year-old wasn't the subject of any firm offer however, and it is understood Godfrey wouldn't consider a move to Craven Cottage as being the next stage of his career.

Fulham have reportedly now moved onto former Canaries defender Ryan Bennett as they look to bolster their defensive options following a poor start to life in the Premier League.

The Press Assoication's Nick Mashiter is reporting that Scott Parker's men are considering a loan move for Bennett, who was linked with Norwich earlier during the window prior to Ben Gibson completing his move to Carrow Road.

One of those clubs, Everton, are reportedly weighing up making a substantial bid for Godfrey after he emerged as a top target for Carlo Ancelotti.

Football Insider have added to the Athletic's David Ornstein's report by stating the Toffees are readying an offer of 'between £20m and £25m' for the England Under-21 international after holding initial discussions with his representatives.

Max Aarons has been mentioned as a possible target for Champions League winners Bayern Munich as Sergino Dest's move to Barcelona edges closer to completion.

Former Barca sporting director Eric Abidal is expected to have led negotiations to attempt to lure Aarons to the Nou Camp - with Koeman preferring Dest after becoming boss of the Spanish giants.

Godfrey has played in all three Championship games since City's relegation from the top-flight was confirmed despite persistent links to numerous clubs throughout the summer.

Bayern have turned their attentions elsewhere after seemingly missing out on Dest - with the latest reports in Germany suggesting Brighton and Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey is their desired target.

Sport 1 in Germany say that Aarons has been considered by Hansi Flick's men but isn't a top priority for them during this window.

Elsewhere, former Leeds United midfielder Noel Whelan has claimed that signing Bayern's Michael Cuisance and Todd Cantwell would complete Marcelo Bielsa's squad as they continue their mission to flourish in the top-flight.

"We need more strength in depth through that middle area and if we can get the Cuisance deal over the line, along with Cantwell and perhaps a winger on loan – that would complete the jigsaw," Whelan told Football Insider.

Premier League clubs deadlocked over cash bailout for EFL amid £200million warning

The 20 Premier League clubs met on a video conference call on Tuesday but remain deadlocked over pleas to help those lower down the English football foodchain

Premier League clubs are split over a cash bail out for the EFL.

The 20 clubs held an hour long video conference meeting on Tuesday and remain deadlocked over pleas to help cash-strapped teams in the Championship, League One and Two.

That comes despite warnings from EFL clubs that they will face financial ruin unless the Premier League or the Government step in after the return of fans to stadiums was put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic.

EFL chairman Rick Parry has warned of a £200m financial blackhole because of the ongoing crisis and League One and Two clubs insist they could be out of business within weeks.

But the Premier League clubs feel that because the Government has blocked the return of fans then it is down to them to try and ease the cash crisis.

They are also of the view that they have already brought forward £125m worth in funds to the EFL last season and have got their own pressing financial concerns because big clubs can lose up to £4m-a-game in gate receipts with no fans.

Government ministers have pointed to a summer of big spending among Premier League clubs - with Chelsea spending in excess of £200m - as a reason why the top flight have got cash to look after their own.

But one source argued that clubs have got to carry on spending because they have to stay competitive.

The value of finishing in European places has never been higher and that some EFL owners in the Championship are wealthier than Premier League counterparts.

There is also a feeling that asking for £200m-plus is unrealistic and is just looking for the Premier League to wipe out all their debts rather than an emergency bail out.

Government officials have asked for the Premier League and EFL chiefs to report back by Wednesday with potential losses so they can see the scale of the problem.

Premier League clubs have got varying degrees of sympathy towards the EFL and their plight but there is a feeling that the Government "moved the goalposts" on fans so should step in.

Clubs will meet again on Tuesday and discussions are ongoing but it will be down to the clubs yo come up with a plan over what they deem an acceptable offer but it is very clear that there is no immediate solution.

They did vote on putting on plans for a potential curtailment but have yet to decide the threshold of when that kick in with between 66 or 75 games the likely margin.

Premier League clubs also approved plans to formally pay for EFL clubs to undergo coronavirus tests when they play each other in the domestic cup competitions.

Tottenham looking to offload defender before they land Serie A star"

Spurs are looking to sell Juan Foyth to Fulham this summer in their bid to bankroll their move for Milan Skriniar, reports FCInterNews.

The Lilywhites have been looking to land a new defender for a long time now and as the transfer window's closing edges closer, they know they have to get it sorted soon.

The report claims that Spurs haven't tabled an official bid for Skriniar yet, but they had budgeted just 35m euros to sign him.

Inter wanted 60m euros for his signature, but they are more willing to accept 50m with bonuses now.

Because of this, Spurs have been advised to increase their budget and the Lilywhites are looking to offload Foyth to fund this move.

The report claims that Spurs hope to make 10m euros from the sale of the unwanted Argentinean, which will make it easy for them to table a 45m euro bid for Skriniar.

Spurs are expected to table a fresh offer within the next 48/72 hours. That offer they reckon will see Inter allow Skriniar to speak with them.

It also adds that Skriniar is ready to accept a five year deal with Spurs that will see him earn 5m euros net per season.

Club open talks with Fulham to sign player – Also contact his agent for help

Turkish website Sporx report Galatasaray have opened talks with Fulham with regards to loaning Jean-Michael Seri until the end of the season.

Gala manager Fatih Terim said after the draw with Fenerbahce last weekend that his club are lacking a midfielder like Seri, and Sporx say they are looking to re-sign the player.

It's reported the Super Lig side have also contacted the Ivorian midfielder's brother and agent Dominique Seri to ask him to help them convince Fulham.

Due to FFP, Gala can only offer a loan deal, but Sporx report Scott Parker's side are looking to sell him on a permanent basis. Subsequently Fulham's stance is causing problems for the Turkish club.

This season Seri has yet to play in the Premier League for Fulham and he wasn't in the squad for yesterday's game against Aston Villa.

Seri's only appearance has come in the Carabao Cup, and his contract with the London side will expire at the end of June 2023.

Full details as Premier League referees set for new 'tweaked' version of handball

PGMOL chief Mike Riley has received backing from law makers IFAB, but while Everton's penalty against Joel Ward wouldn't be given, the one controversially given against Eric Dier would still be awarded

Premier League referees will be given a new "tweaked" version of the handball law.

As revealed in Wednesday's Mirror Sport, referees' chiefs will send out a fresh directive to officials after a string of controversial decisions last weekend.

PGMOL chief Mike Riley has received backing from law makers IFAB in relation over the "proximity" of opponents when the ball hits the arm of an opponent and also the position of the arm.

It means that Everton's penalty against Joel Ward would not be given because the Crystal Palace defender would be deemed too close to get out of the way.

But Tottenham defender Eric Dier would still be judged to give away a penalty because, according to law 12, the ball struck his arm when it was above his shoulder.

The Dier decision caused uproar and yet the Prem do not believe there is any room for manoeuvre under the new handball on the position of the arm.

10 goals conceded in three games, co-owner Tony Khan apologising on Twitter and just six days to sign the defenders so desperately needed... Fulham's Premier League return isn't going well but is it any wonder after only 39 days of pre-season?

Fulham's defending was atrocious during Monday's 3-0 home loss to Aston Villa
The match was followed by a Twitter apology from co-owner Tony Khan
Khan pledged to deliver new signings at centre back before the window closes
Defensive problems look set to once again be the main issue in Premier League
Fulham can be excused as they had just 39 days to prepare for top-flight return

It didn't take long for Twitter to swing into action in the wake of Fulham's 3-0 loss to Aston Villa.

There was another viral mash-up in which the words of manager Scott Parker were set to a tune by The Streets.

But more significantly, there was an extraordinary intervention by Fulham co-owner Tony Khan on the club's efforts in the transfer market.

So what's going on at a club whose return to the Premier League has started badly to say the least?

What did Tony Khan have to say?
Within minutes of the final whistle, Khan, the son of Fulham owner Shahid, tweeted an apology to fans for the dismal performance.

He then added that the club had been trying to strengthen a defence that has now conceded 10 goals in their first three Premier League games.

Khan said two centre back targets had contracted Covid-19, a deal to bring in another on a free had fallen through and there was 'another issue' with a fourth set of negotiations.

Khan then promised there would be signings in the final week of the transfer window as well as 'better efforts from this squad.'

He later posted a second message apologising again and emphasising there would be improvements.

In the meantime, Khan responded to a couple of replies from Fulham fans to his original tweet.

He shut down one suggestion that Fulham take new Chelsea signing Malang Sarr on loan, saying Premier League rules prohibited it.

Khan also hinted that talks over at least one of the (unnamed) players suffering from Covid weren't necessarily over.

Whatever, time is fast ebbing away for Fulham to make the necessary improvements at the back.

How did Parker react to the comments?
Well, Khan's intervention was certainly unexpected and can be interpreted as a move to quickly quell some of the fan criticism that followed such a poor performance.

He clearly wanted to show efforts have and are being made to sort things out at the back.

Parker certainly won't turn down some new recruits in defence and it's very clear that Fulham need them.

But he stopped short of saying that Khan's words were helpful.

'Tony's the (co-)owner of the football club, and he is a director of football and obviously he feels it's his responsibility and it is in terms of bringing players in, so that's obviously where it is,' Parker said.

'Helpful? Yeah, I'm not sure. But that's up to Tony, really.'

Parker went further in another press conference on Tuesday, saying: 'It's not something I agree with it, it's not something that is helpful.

'The one thing I'm disappointed with is that he apologised for the performance. The other bits, it is what it is.'

And as Sportsmail revealed, the players are backing Parker over Khan's decision to apologise for their performance.

There had been news earlier on Monday that Fulham's move for Sassuolo's Brazilian centre back Marlon had fallen through after a failed medical.

But when asked specifically about Marlon, Parker said: 'Honestly, I wouldn't know. I think the people in the places to be at the football club make those decisions.'

So it confirms Khan and his team are still very much in charge of recruitment strategy with minimal input from Parker.

With increasingly disgruntled Fulham fans knowing this already, it perhaps explains Khan's rush to apologise.

So Fulham haven't signed any defensive players this summer?
That's not strictly true as they've brought in the right back Kenny Tete from Lyon and left back Antonee Robinson from Wigan.

But as their shocking performance against Villa showed, the glaring weakness that needs to be urgently addressed is at centre back.

Denis Odoi allowed Jack Grealish to run between him and Michael Hector to open the scoring for Villa after just four minutes.

Odoi didn't cover himself in glory for Villa's second, either, as Conor Hourihane was allowed a close-range finish.

And their third, just after half-time, was a dismal failure of the offside trap as Tyrone Mings ran through to poke home a free-kick.

This is hardly an isolated incident. Fulham lost 3-0 to Arsenal on the opening day and shipped four at Leeds United last weekend.

We may only be three games in but Fulham are already bottom of the table and one bookmaker is already paying out on them to be relegated.

So there are echoes of their last Premier League season?
Absolutely. It was defensive frailties mainly to blame for Fulham's relegation in 2018-19. They conceded 81 goals - the most in the division.

Odoi and Tim Ream played the majority of games then so little has changed.

You simply don't get away with the kind of lapses in defensive concentration that can go unpunished in the Championship.

In the Monday Night Football studio, Jamie Carragher didn't hold back in his criticism of Khan and Fulham.

'It never works, it always ends up in tears,' Carragher said.

'He's a clown, getting involved with that. Just shut your mouth, get on with it, keep your head down.

'I'm more certain of Fulham going down than Liverpool winning the league. What we saw there was actually unbelievable.'

As well as setting himself up for criticism come the end of the window next week, Khan's tweets have only alerted selling clubs to Fulham's desperation meaning they're more likely to charge a premium.

What has Parker done to try and solve the problem?
Fulham's manager did try a tactical tweak on Monday night.

In their opening two league games of the season, Parker went with the 4-2-3-1 formation used towards the end of their promotion-winning campaign.

Against Arsenal, Ream and Hector played at centre back with Odoi on the right side. Against Leeds, Odoi partnered Hector in the middle with new arrival Tete at right back.

For the Villa game, Parker switched to a 3-4-3 system with Odoi, Hector and Ream at the back plus wing backs Joe Bryan on the left and Tete on the right.

Unfortunately, the team seemed baffled with Villa able to kill the contest inside the first 15 minutes and midfielders Tom Cairney and Frank Anguissa so consumed with defensive responsibility they couldn't do anything going forward.

It was certainly clear that a more stable defensive foundation is needed before Parker tries the set-up again.

Is there any mitigation?
Yes, plenty. It was always going to be difficult for Fulham given the tight 39-day turnaround between their play-off final win over Brentford and their Premier League opener against Arsenal.

After giving the players some down time, Parker only had a couple of weeks on the training ground to get across his ideas for the tricky season ahead. There was only time for one pre-season match.

So it's going to take a little bit of time for them to readjust to life in the Premier League but given the defeats so far, things could quickly become a little demoralising as they did two years ago.

There's also the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic that is keeping crowds away from stadiums and wiping out matchday revenue.

Craven Cottage isn't the biggest stadium but the windfall that usually comes from promotion to the Premier League won't be as big this season as in the past.

What are Fulham's ambitions though?
That's an interesting one. The last time they won promotion, Khan spent big in an effort to compete.

Over £100million was paid out for the likes of Anguissa, Alfie Mawson, Jean Michael Seri and a permanent deal for Aleksandar Mitrovic.

It was a disaster. Neither Slavisa Jokanovic nor Claudio Ranieri could fit these square pegs into round holes. By the time Parker came in as caretaker boss, relegation was a certainty.

Having learned a lesson and with Covid squeezing the budget, Fulham have been more cautious this time.

There's been an outlay of only £25m so far with the permanent signing of Anthony Knockaert from Brighton for £10.5m the biggest spend.

That could well change if Fulham can get those defensive targets over the line this week but the expenditure will be nowhere near 2018 levels.

But the example of Norwich last season suggests being prudent in the transfer market doesn't make you competitive in the Premier League.

Fulham, like Norwich and West Brom, seem destined to be a yo-yo club. Too good for the Championship but not good enough for the top tier.

That seems good enough for the owners, though. One Fulham fan replied to Khan saying: 'Our fans love this club dearly yet you seem happy to let us become a yo-yo club for financial gains.'

To which Khan replied: 'While absolutely nothing I can say would make up for tonight's performance, frankly we would've absolutely killed to be a yo-yo club when I took it over after finishing 20th in the Championship.'

Khan's reply about being happy to be a yo-yo club will have alarmed some Fulham fans

While nobody is denying Fulham's progress since the low of that season, let's also not forget they became a Premier League mainstay between 2001 and 2014, and reached a European final 10 years ago.

After a Carabao Cup visit to west London rivals Brentford on Thursday, Fulham do have a run of games against Wolves, Sheffield United, Crystal Palace and West Brom that can - indeed must - yield some points.

The immediate focus must be on the defence, however.

Journalist claims NUFC are now trying to beat Fulham to the signing of Omar Colley

According to reports in Italy, Newcastle have reignited their interest in Sampdoria centre-back Omar Colley.

This comes from Sport Italia reporter Gianluigi Longari, who claims that we are taking another look at the 6ft 3′ defender after Fulham entered talks with the Serie A side over a potential deal.

Colley was linked with a move to St James' Park back in January, with TuttoMercatoWeb reporting that we met the player's representatives in Italy earlier this year after watching him 'several times' over the 2019/20 season.

It's been well documented that Bruce is in the market for a centre-back over the final few days of the window, with us all set to sign Rob Holding last month – only to see Mikel Arteta pull the plug on his loan move to St James' Park.

Colley could be an alternative we're now looking at, although I can't help but wonder whether we'll only be looking at loans unless funds are raised from an Atsu or Yedlin?

The Gambian international completed a £7m move from Genk to Sampdoria in 2018 and has played 57 times for them since, scoring once.

Fulham appear to be in the driving seat if Longari is to be believed – and boy do they need a good centre-back – but this could be on to watch over the next few days given our previous interest.

Fulham to rival Tottenham Hotspur for Milan Skriniar?

Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar has reportedly emerged as a surprise transfer target for Fulham.

The Slovakia international is allegedly valued in the region of £50m by the Europa League runners-up, a price tag which may be deemed too expensive by Tottenham Hotspur.

However, according to The Sun, Fulham are contemplating whether to enter the race for the highly-regarded centre-back.

After Monday night's 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa, co-owner Tony Khan claimed that he would make fresh attempts to sign a big-name player for Scott Parker's backline.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether Khan would be prepared to commit to the significant financial outlay required to bring in Skriniar.

The 25-year-old may also favour a switch to a club competing in Europe, rather than one at the wrong end of the Premier League table.

Report: Fulham join Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar race

Fulham are yet to secure a point in the Premier League this term, suffering a third consecutive defeat on Monday at the hands of Aston Villa.

Scott Parker's side have now shipped 10 league goals since returning to the top-flight, prompting director of football Tony Khan to go on Twitter and admit that they have been poor.

The Fulham chief also revealed how his side have failed in their attempts to land a centre-back, with a £13 million move for Sassuolo's Marlon falling through after he failed his medical.

The Craven Cottagers are looking to sign a centre-back before the summer transfer window shuts, and they are ready to punch above their weights from the look of things.

According to The Sun, Fulham are plotting to pip Tottenham Hotspur to the signature of Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho wants the Slovakian centre-back, but the Serie A giants are holding out for £45 million.

The North Londoners have been prepared to offer between £30 million and £35 million for the services of the 25-year-old, and while Inter want to cash in on him, they want more from suitors.

Fulham will have to outbid Tottenham and convince Skriniar with a huge salary for them to have the slightest chance of getting such a deal done.

They have signed six players thus far this term but clearly need to concentrate on quality and not quantity, and it appears that they are ready to do so with an audacious bid for the Inter star.

Report: Newcastle could hijack Fulham's move to sign Sampdoria defender Omar Colley

Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed that Newcastle United could look to hijack Fulham's move to raid Serie A side Sampdoria and lure Omar Colley to the Premier League, as the African continues to be heavily linked with English clubs.

Colley, 27, has caught the eye for Sampdoria in his two years with the Italian club after joining from Belgian side Genk. He has since played 57 times in all competitions for Sampdoria, becoming renowned for his strength, pace and aerial ability.

Fulham are desperate to sign central defenders before October 5 and many have been linked with the west London side. Colley is the latest, with the Italian report stating that Fulham are in talks over a move. However, Newcastle could make a late move.

Indeed, it is believed Newcastle tried to sign the Gambia international in January and could go back in for Colley. Italian website SampNews24 have claimed that Celtic, West Ham, Liverpool and others are keen – with a fee of £9million enough (CM).

TBR's view – Colley would be a top addition for Newcastle

The Toon certainly need central defenders. The club have loaned out Florian Lejeune, leaving the club with Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez for a side that sometimes use a back three.

Colley would add some much-needed pace at the back, at a bargain price. It would give Bruce more flexibility in being able to use a back three or just two centre-backs given his pace and ability to recover if a player goes through.

A no-brainer for Newcastle to hijack Fulham's move for a player that has the same agent as ex-Toon striker Emmanuel Riviere, as per TransferMarkt.

Report: Fulham join Tottenham in race for defender Milan Skriniar

Tottenham have reportedly been joined by Premier League and London rivals Fulham in an attempt to sign defender Milan Skriniar from Inter Milan.

According to the Sun, Spurs have been in talks with Italian giants Inter about the 25-year-old and he's expected to leave the Serie A outfit.

It is claimed that Jose Mourinho's side have been willing to pay between £30million-£35million for the centre-back this summer, although Inter are holding out for £45million.

The report explains that Fulham have now emerged as late suitors for the Slovakia international, as they are desperate to bolster their backline and know they would have to give him colossal wages to entice him to West London.

The report adds that Spurs still view themselves as favourites and in pole position to sign Skriniar, but are frustrated by his price tag and could be willing to look elsewhere.

TBR's View:

Despite the fact that the Skriniar saga continues to drag on, Spurs shouldn't be worried about Fulham joining the race to sign him as it seems highly unlikely he would pick a move to Craven Cottage over a team competing in Europe.

Mourinho's team seem intent on adding another centre-back to their squad and they need to do everything they can to negotiate a deal for the Inter ace before the transfer window shuts.

Skriniar is an all-action defender that looks ready for the Premier League with his physical presence and reading of the game, plus he's proven in the Italian league he's a classy centre-back in possession too.
