Aleksandar Mitrovic opens up on how Newcastle United fans and city left mark despite goals admission

Newcastle United supporters struck up a bond with Aleksandar Mitrovic and it is safe to say that the Serbia international will never forget his time at St James' Park

Aleksandar Mitrovic celebrates with a fan after scoring Newcastle United's equaliser in the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland at St James' Park on March 20, 2016

Aleksandar Mitrovic had hoped to score more goals for Newcastle United but the former No 9 will never forget the friends he made while playing for a 'really massive club'.

The Serbia international, who idolised Alan Shearer as a youngster, completed his £13m move from Anderlecht in the summer of 2015.

Mitrovic played right on the edge and the new signing was booked just 22 seconds into his debut against Southampton before being sent off on his next top-flight appearance at St James' Park against Arsenal.

Mitrovic ultimately scored nine Premier League goals in his first season in England as the Magpies were relegated to the Championship.

The striker went on to struggle for for a regular run of starts under Rafa Benitez and joined Fulham on loan in January, 2018 before making his move to Craven Cottage permanent a few months later.

Mitrovic had hoped to make a bigger impact at Newcastle but, regardless, the 26-year-old will always look back on his time in the North East with fondness.

"I didn't play as much as I wanted," the Fulham No 9 told Premier League World. "I didn't score as many goals as I wanted but, in the end, I made so many friends there.

"The supporters there in the stadium, everything, the city are so lovely. The people are always so kind.

"It's hard as well when it's not going well. It's a tough place to play with a lot of pressure but it's a really massive club."

Large sections of the steel frame for Fulham FC's new Riverside stand have now been erected by contractor Buckingham Group, new images have revealed.

Work on the Riverside Stand at Craven Cottage began in May last year and was scheduled to take two years to complete, ready for the start of the 2021/22 season.

The new two-tier structure, designed by architect Populous, will add 4,000 new seats, taking the stadium's capacity to 29,600.

Prior to its work at Fulham, Buckingham Group won the roofing contract on Tottenham Hotspur's £800m stadium in 2017, under construction manager Mace.

Scott Parker backing on-loan Ruben Loftus-Cheek to make big impact at Fulham

Scott Parker believes Ruben Loftus-Cheek will have a big role to play for Fulham this season after the midfielder got off the mark for his new club in Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Everton.

The on-loan Chelsea ace fired home in the 70th minute at Craven Cottage but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser.

Loftus-Cheek's performance served as one major positive for his manager to take from the encounter, with the 24-year-old also able to win a penalty in his 32-minute cameo.

An Achilles injury in May last year halted the development of the England international and he has been used sparingly by Parker in November, but his boss hinted he is ready to unleash the Chelsea academy graduate.

"I thought he was brilliant," the Fulham manager said of Loftus-Cheek.

"We have worked really hard with Ruben in terms of the information I am trying to give him and him as a player and how he can have a big impact this year.

"Sometimes I feel like Ruben has a tendency for games to drift him by but today was everything we have spoke about with him.

"He came on, made a difference and looked every bit of a top, top player. He got on the ball, was brave, scored a goal and was dynamic and if you get him in between the lines, with confidence, he has that raw ability.

"He will be big for us this year. He needs to keep working and listening to what we are saying to him, but no doubt he will keep improving."

Loftus-Cheek will hope his goal can earn him a start away to Leicester on Saturday, which is the beginning of a daunting run of fixtures for the newly-promoted side.

Fulham have lost seven out of nine games in the Premier League and after a trip to the King Power Stadium at the weekend, take on Manchester City and Liverpool in consecutive matches at the start of December.

Parker added: "We can lose football matches and I will be judged on that, I understand that, but I don't think anyone will ever point the finger or tarnish us by saying the players won't play for me or this football club or show that.

"Every time they step on the field they will keep learning, they will make mistakes and the gulf at times is big with the quality of players and fixtures coming up, there is no doubt.

"But with endeavour and a work ethic to keep improving as a team, we will go in the right direction."

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti was pleased to see his side return to winning ways after a four-match run without a victory.

The Italian described the spell as a "difficult period" but helped to move away from that with a change of formation in London from his usual 4-3-3.

Ben Godfrey, Yerry Mina and Michael Keane formed a back-three, with Alex Iwobi used in the unorthodox position of right wing-back.

Ancelotti warned: "I don't think it is a winning system because there is no winning system, but we tried to be more compact in the middle of defence with three defenders.

"Anyway we have to work on this. I think this system gave us the possibility to use more the width of the pitch and to put crosses in and with (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, we can be dangerous."

Nigeria international Iwobi has been in and out of the team since he moved to Merseyside from Arsenal last summer, but Ancelotti was delighted with his display out of position.

The 61-year-old added: "He has the quality to play there because he is physically strong and can go up and down.

"He has quality one-on-one, can put in a lot of crosses and in the first half he did really well. I am happy for his performance."

Match report: Arsenal U-18s 0-0 Fulham

WHAT HAPPENED
Our under-18s returned from the international break with a 0-0 draw against Fulham in the U-18 Premier League South on Saturday.

Joel Ideho made his first appearance at this level after joining us from Ajax in the summer, while Ovie Ejeheri replaced Hubert Graczyk in goal.

Early on, Ideho's pace and trickery won a free-kick for Charlie Patino to deliver to the far post, but Zane Monlouis failed to hit the target from close range.

Patino then delivered another cross for Luke Plange to head wide of the far post, before Asrion Pajaziti came close for the visitors, forcing Ejeheri into a fine save.

Following the restart, we remained patient with our build-up play but our best chance of the afternoon came from a sudden surging run from Brooke Norton-Cuffy, who came on as a substitute for our under-23s less than 24 hours earlier.

The 16-year-old received the ball by the corner flag and held off one marker, before dribbling past another and winning a free kick in a dangerous position.

Patino's inch-perfect delivery bypassed Fulham's defence and bounced inside the six-yard area, but it ricocheted back off the post before anyone could provide the finishing touch.

The visitors had a late chance to seal all three points against the run of play, only for Luke Harris to blaze his first-time effort over the bar.

WHAT'S NEXT
Up next, we will face Rotherham United in the FA Youth Cup on Saturday, December 12.

The game is set to be played at AESSEL New York Stadium with kick-off at 7pm (UK time).

Fans at sporting events: Maximum of 4,000 set to be allowed in England

A crowd of 1,060 supporters watched Northern Ireland play Slovakia in their Euro 2020 play-off final early this month

A maximum of 4,000 fans are set to be allowed at outdoor events in the lowest-risk areas when the national lockdown in England ends on 2 December, BBC Sport understands.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to make an announcement later on Monday about the return of crowds.

He will make a statement to the House of Commons, and MPs will vote on it later in the week.

Up to 2,000 fans will be allowed in tier two areas but zero in tier three.

The measures are set to be part of the new Covid-19 restrictions in England.

Elite sport has continued behind closed doors during England's four-week lockdown, but grassroots and amateur sport has been halted since 5 November.

Fulham in a spot of bother after latest penalty fiasco

(Reuters) - Fulham supporters will be forgiven for thinking their penalty takers are cursed after winger Ivan Cavaleiro became the third player to miss from the spot this season for the promoted Premier League side.

With his team awarded a spot kick while trailing 3-1 at home to Everton on Sunday, Portuguese Cavaleiro slipped in his run-up, kicked the ball onto his own foot and watched it balloon over the crossbar.

Cavaleiro was only entrusted penalty duties after Aleksandar Mitrovic struck the bar at Sheffield United and Ademola Lookman failed with an attempted 'Panenka' chip - made famous by Czech Antonin Panenka - late in the defeat by West Ham United.

Disgruntled fans on social media came down hard on Cavaleiro and described his effort against Everton as a 'John Terry' after the former England defender's miss for Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final against Manchester United.

"If you want to nullify Fulham's goal threat just give us a penalty," English television presenter Richard Osman said on Twitter.

While Lookman faced manager Scott Parker's wrath for his howler last time out, there was only sympathy for Cavaleiro.

"You couldn't have written it. All I can say is that over the last 10 days we've put things in place and worked tirelessly in terms of preparation and understanding the process," Parker told reporters.

"Ivan is an exceptional penalty taker and last time I was in this situation with Ade's, I was angry and disappointed with the way we missed it, but today these things can happen."

Fulham's problems from the spot go beyond this season and they have missed five of their last eight penalty kicks in the league, leaving Parker considering his options ahead of their trip to Leicester City next Monday.

Ex-Fulham and Liverpool player Danny Murphy, who converted 18 of his 19 Premier League penalties, had words of advice.

"The angle's too narrow (on Cavaleiro's approach). We both know he slipped. It's an unorthodox way of taking a penalty. Get your foot behind it. Whoever's going to take the next one," Murphy told the BBC.

Fulham boss Scott Parker unhappy after third penalty miss of the season proves costly in Everton defea

Scott Parker rued Fulham's third penalty miss of the season after Ivan Cavaleiro became the latest player to fluff his lines from 12 yards in their 3-2 defeat against Everton.

Cavaleiro was entrusted with penalty duties at Craven Cottage on Sunday but he slipped as he made contact and his effort ballooned over the crossbar.

Ademola Lookman failed with a Panenka attempt against West Ham before the international break and Aleksandar Mitrovic has also missed from the spot this season.

"You could not have written it," said Parker after Fulham suffered a defeat that leaves them just one point above the relegation zone. "Cav was the penalty taker. We have worked all week on that. He is a very good penalty taker. The boy slips and misses. We worked through it all week. He slipped, it is one of those things."

Fulham produced a stirring late fightback against Everton after they were 3-0 down at half-time, but Parker has demanded more from his players in their battle against relegation.

He said: "There needs to be an intensity about us. A football match, first and foremost, is decided on an aggression, on putting a stamp on things and then after that you build onto your game and play your way. We did not do that in the first half.

"We played our way and had some nice bits about us, nice Fulham, scored a nice little goal. But ultimately what concerned me the most in the first half was exactly what I am talking about.

"There was a reaction in the second half but it should not have to come from a rollicking at half-time. That should come from within.

"I can always hold my hands up if another team is superior. What I cannot accept from my teams is at times in the first half we were second best to 50-50 challenges. What I am asking for in the first half is not something you can coach. We got it in the second half but it was too late."

Reed: Get Streetwise

Harrison Reed wants to see Fulham add a 'streetwise' edge to their play in future matches.

Three goals conceded in the first half on Sunday ended up costing us the game, despite a spirited performance from Reed and his teammates.

"Conceding so early on is a hammer blow," Reed said of Everton's opener after just 42 seconds. "To then show a reaction and come back into the game, I thought we did really well to do that, but then it's about managing the game and understanding the state of the game.

"Maybe playing a bit more cautiously and being a little bit more streetwise to get ourselves into half-time, regroup and see where we could improve in the second half.

"We gave ourselves a mountain to climb, and in the Premier League it's a long way back from there. The way we started the game was very, very disappointing.

"To concede so early on and then get back into the game, but to then concede two more before half-time was obviously not what we were looking to do."

Reed played his part in what was a lovely equaliser, feeding Bobby De Cordova-Reid who executed a smart one-two with Tom Cairney before firing home.

"It's always something we're looking to do," Reed explained. "We're a team that likes to play football and put together patterns and create chances.

"We're building that chemistry in training day in and day out, so to see it come off in the game and get us the goal, it's great to see and obviously shows what we can do."

That strike was De Cordova-Reid's fourth of the season in just 10 matches, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek opened his account for Fulham in what was an impressive display by the substitute.

"I think Bobby's been brilliant," Reed said. "He had to be patient at the start of the season to get his chance, and he's taken it and shown that he's a big part of the team and that he'll provide goals for us.

"And it was great to see Ruben come on and make the impact that he did. It was a very good performance from him I thought, and he deserved his goal."

Next up is a trip to high-flying Leicester City – a fixture that Reed says the Whites will be fired up for.

"I've seen quite a few of their games," he said. "They've mixed up their tactics against big sides and gone and got results, and also at home against so called lesser sides they've dominated games.

"They like to play football and have obviously got a great squad. But that's the challenge we're up against, and that's what we did all the hard work for last year, to play in these games against these great sides, and we're looking forward to that one.

"We'll use the frustration and the pain from the game this weekend, take it into training this week, work harder than we ever have before, and try and put everything right. We're working hard day in, day out to put these things right.

"We know we've got things to work on and we'll do that throughout this week. Like we do every game, we'll go into Leicester with confidence and belief that we can get a positive result."

When your Premier League club could have fans back after new coronavirus rules

The government has announced supporters can return to stadiums in some parts of the country - but the number of fans in attendance, if any, depends on local restrictions

Fans are set to return to some Premier League grounds for the first time in over eight months as the UK emerges from the second nationwide lockdown on Thursday 3 December.

Boris Johnson announced new coronavirus regulations on Monday afternoon allowing certain numbers of supporters to attend games in areas with Tier 1 (medium) and Tier 2 (high) restrictions.

Top-flight stadiums will welcome back 4,000 fans in Tier 1 areas, while 2,000 fans can attend if the region is in Tier 2, with everyone present to be socially-distanced in the stands.

But games will continue to be played behind closed doors in Tier 3 (very high) zones, where the tightest restrictions are in force.

New tiers will be announced on Thursday, but based on the tiers that local areas were placed into before the second lockdown, we can get an idea of the restrictions that will be in place.

Here's how things currently look.

Fulham

Stadium: Craven Cottage

Capacity: 19,359

First home match after 2 December: Liverpool (Premier League)

Previous regulations: Tier 2

Likely number of fans who can attend: 2,000

Just two Premier League clubs set to get immediate return of 4,000 fans in early December

Only two top-flight stadiums are expected to be located in areas with Tier 1 restrictions as the United Kingdom emerges from the national lockdown next Thursday

Fans will be allowed back into stadiums from next month in a huge boost for football.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has given the green light for up to 4,000 fans to go to Premier League games from December 2 onwards.

That means supporters in Tier One and Two can go to football matches and other sporting events both indoors and outdoors after the lockdown ends.

Rugby, horse racing - including the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day - and the PDC World Darts Championships at Alexandra Palace could all have fans allowed to attend.

It is a huge boost for Premier League clubs, the EFL and also grassroots football while gyms and leisure centres will be allowed to open with only areas in Tier Three not allowed to have fans back in.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "This is a big step forward for sport. Bringing grassroots sport back was my number one priority so I'm pleased we are reopening sports and gyms in every tier, in recognition of the significant health benefits.

"I'm also delighted we are able to get the turnstiles turning sooner than expected, taking a cautious approach and starting with the lowest risk areas first.

"I'm confident that sports will take every step to ensure their fans are safe, and fans will play their part and look out for each other until we can safely get everyone back in."

The move was welcomed by the EFL and they said in a statement: "It is an important step in achieving a return to normal, alongside it being crucial to addressing the significant revenue gap left by a lack of spectators and other revenue streams as a result of the pandemic.

"The restrictions in place does mean that not all Clubs will get the opportunity straight away to re-open their turnstiles and we still await further guidance from DCMS to understand what areas will be placed in which tier which will not be available until later this week."

Darren Childs, Chief Executive of Premiership Rugby said: "This announcement is another welcome boost for Premiership Rugby clubs and the wider sports sector following Thursday's Winter Sports Survival Package.

"We won't know the exact impact on our clubs until the tiers are announced on Thursday, so my team stands ready to work with Government to tackle the challenges of fan attendance in a way that minimises health risks."

Elite sport clubs and events hosted outdoors in tier one locations will be able to welcome up to a maximum of 4,000 fans or 50 per cent of stadium capacity - whatever is lower. In tier two (high alert) locations the cap is set at 2,000 supporters or 50 percent of stadium capacity.

Indoor sporting events and fixtures in tiers one and two locations will be able to host a maximum of 1,000 fans or 50 per cent of stadium capacity - whatever is lower.

Clubs will not discover until later this week which tiers their local area will be placed in and how many fans will be allowed in.

Only two Premier League clubs - Brighton and Southampton, which are expected to remain under Tier 1 covid restrictions after the lockdown ends on December 2 - will be allowed to let in the maximum 4,000 fans.

It will be up to each club to decide how tickets are allocated, some will do ballots, others will prioritise season ticket holders who have not been issued with refunds and some clubs have invited supporters to apply to go into a ballot.

Face masks will be mandatory at indoor events, will be only "encouraged" for outdoor venues because social distancing will be in place.

Fans will have to sign up to medical questionnaires and declaration forms which must be completed 24 hours ahead of a game while some venues will also have to carry out temperature checks before fans are allowed in.
