Fulham fans debate relegation battle with Newcastle United – Agree drastic change needed

Fulham fans have been discussing the relegation battle, as Newcastle United are now slight favourites to go down, just ahead of the Cottagers.

Their team has lost just five of their last eighteen Premier League matches but scoring only 11 goals in these 18 games, means they have ended up with 10 draws and only three wins.

Fulham fans now feeling that a change is drastically needed...

With Ruben Loftus-Cheek having scored only once in 23 PL appearances and John Maja scoring in only one game so far, the call has gone out.

Is it time for Aleksandar Mitrovic to save Fulham and send Newcastle United down?

Not picked for the first game of the season, Mitro started the next seven, scoring twice in his first start in a 4-3 loss at Leeds.

He hasn't scored again and indeed has only started three PL matches since those opening seven ended in November.

A combination of loss of form, injury, lack of fitness and Covid has made Scott Parker look elsewhere, so far...

Fulham fans calling for Mitro to return, starting against Leeds tomorrow night.

Fulham fans comment via their Fulham Web message board:

'Anyone else think Mitrovic is going to play a key role in the run in and will score a few crucial goals that will save us.'

'Can Parker please give Mitro the next 9-10 games.

What Ruben has done with all his minutes, in the attacking third, is really poor. No goals, no assists, no threat. Mitro's tally two years ago, playing alongside lesser players, was solid. He can score in this league. He can give us a threat on set pieces. We actually had a decent number of corners vs Man City. And how much will we truly lose defensively playing Mitro vs Maja? Maja has two tap ins for us. Mitro could've scored that rebound from Reed's shot just as easily. Parker continues to miss this one trick. The lineup vs Man City was brilliant for 45 minutes, but zero goal threat. To expect a clean sheet... not happening. Bringing Mitro in at halftime at least would help us retain possession. Give Man City something different to contend with. Sadly, I don't see Mitro or TC getting much chance during this last push. They remain our best attacking and creative players, willing passers, finishers from beyond the penalty area. And we need goals.'

'I agree, RLC is a glorified show pony, more content with his flicks and tricks. As a big unit, he offers nothing in defending or attacking either along the ground or in the air. He spends more time on his back side hoping for free kicks. He makes Cavaleiro look World class in comparison and that's saying something.'

'I keep hoping against hope that every time RLC starts a game he will suddenly become fit and interested, and will suddenly spark into life, but once the game starts, he offers absolutely nothing to our cause. I think that Scott, who has won me round at the moment, can see something in RLC that no one else I know can. Like most of us, I was prepared to give him time to make a full recovery, as after all, he had looked like a very talented England International, but that time is now long gone, and the sooner he returns to Chelsea the better for us all.'

'Look at it logicaly,Mitro had lost form so we took in Maja, yet both were on the bench. We effectivly played with no forwards.City must have thought it was xmas.No need to defend as the likely hood of us seriously causing their defense any problems was remote. It took them 45 mins to work it out ,and we know what the result was.why get in a forward to cover Mitro,if you dont play either.'

'What a load of tosh, Mitro loses the ball constantly and wouldn't be quick enough to be in the right place for tap ins without being offside. I'm not a massive fan of RLC but believe he offers us more overall. Mitro has not scored in 22 games, for a number 9 not good enough to stay in the premier league.'

'I believe playing Mitro is our solution to remaining in prem and must start giving him more game time now... our best striker over past few seasons consistently scores for Serbia got a gut feeling he will return to form and get amongst the goals again if given more serious game time. Worth a try now Scotty goals win games! This strange season has become fascinating if not nail biting after our poor start we've all seen such massive improvement in our defence and even the media have recognised our turn around in performances. Just got to get our goal scoring sorted and we'll be fine. Are now in the ascendancy and need to turn these good performances into wins and points. Got the hope and vision for getting the job done now and holding onto our decent players to enjoy our new stand watching ongoing PREM football!'

Everyone knew Mitro lacked the speed for this league, however knowing that why didn't Parker get shot of him during the closed season and bring in someone like Toney ? He didn't and now refuses to play the guy. It's true that Mitrovic hasn't scored for 20+ games, but how much playing time has he actually had? Not a great amount, through injury, loss of confidence and therefore form, Covid etc., yet he plays RLC . RLC has scored once in all the pitch time he's had and that was a deflected effort.'

'Mitro should definitely start against Leeds on Friday.'

'Lets hope when the new season starts we have rid ourselves of Mitro, it would save columns of print deciding if this guy will ever be fit and if so what he may or may not do.'

'Speed was never Mitro's forte.

Give him some service in the box starting friday, Leeds defence almost as fragile as ours was in the first 10 games. Don't forget, he got two at there place and his hold up play as good as any body in this team.'

'Exactly, give Mitro a proper service , ie decent crosses and he will score!'

'Parker wants all action players, Mitro does not fit that model and Maja has not got it yet. Mitro is an old fashioned striker who does nothing but score goals. There are a lot of those kind of strikers in the Championship very few in the PL where they are too much of a liability and easy to defend against.'

'I understand the loyalty people show towards Mitro i don't believe he's the same player this season, weather it's COVID, confidence or fitness.'

'If Newcastle lose their game in hand, we only need to match Newcastle results and keep our goal difference as well as beat them on the final day.'

We beat Leeds and Brighton beat Newcastle we are out of the bottom three with our fate in our own hands. If the results go the other way we are in a lot of trouble again. The balance of our season is on a real knife edge as it is not just our results it is everybody else's results as well.'

'I am hoping that we win our next 4 home games to bring us up to at least a total of 38 points, which may or may not save us from going down, but when you look at our home record it is staggering to see that we have only scored 3 goals in our last 10 home games. I'm therefore very sorry to say, that unless we start scoring at home again, starting on Friday, and we will need a real change of fortune to do that, then I'm afraid that the trap door is starting to open.

Looking at our home fixtures against Leeds, Wolves, Burnley and Newcastle, they will all come to stop us scoring, especially Burnley and Newcastle, so the signs are not good.'

'Even if we don't start scoring at home or continue our form, it could well be a race to the bottom 3 with Newcastle! they can't score either and they have a weaker defence. We just need to get our nose ahead of them until the last game.'

'Desperately need a fit Mitro. And stop looking for Newcastle and Brighton to slip up. Only way to survive is to start winning games.'

'In my opinion, if we are going to stay up this season, and it's still only an outside chance, then we should never again, take the field without either Mitro or Maja, or even both, as we must score goals to win which is obvious.'

'By my reckoning 6 or 7 more points keeps us up.'

'I went through the remaining fixtures trying to be realistic and came up with at the end of the season:

42 Southampton

40 Burnley

40 Fulham

35 Brighton

34 Newcastle.'

Scott Parker's Fulham Could Miss Out on Premier League Survival

Scott Parker's Fulham face a difficult run-in as they bid to ensure Premier League survival. The Cottagers have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks but it could be too little to late for the west London club.

Scott Parker's Fulham Could Be Unable to Stay Up
Last Time in the Premier League

Their last season in the top flight was an unmitigated failure and ended in relegation.

They spent over £100 million on transfers over the course of the season, brought in expensive loan signings and came in with high hopes.

Alarm bells had begun ringing early on. They hired the Premier League-winning manager Claudio Ranieri to help stop the rot, but even he could do nothing.

A run of nine successive defeats sealed Fulham's fate, landing them unceremoniously back in the Championship.

Return to the Premier League

Following relegation, the enthusiasm was gone. The pomp and circumstance completely faded. Their new head coach, Scott Parker, was seen as a cheap option and led some to believe an era of mediocrity beckoned.

An opening day defeat at Barnsley only appeared to confirm the Cottagers' fears. However, consistent form and a late-season surge put Fulham in the playoffs. After seeing off a stout-hearted Cardiff City side, they faced Brentford in the final.

Their London rivals certainly went in as favourites, but a magical brace in extra time by Joe Bryan ensured them a return to the top flight at the first time of asking. Scott Parker had answered his critics.

But, this was merely his first challenge. To avoid a repeat of 2019, Parker still had a lot of work to do.

Scott Parker's Fulham Struggle in Premier League Return

Early in the new campaign, it was apparent that Fulham did not have the defensive setup required in the Premier League. They shipped ten goals in their first four games, losing all of them.

Fulham weren't just lacklustre at the back; their defence was the subject of national ridicule. The structure was non-existent, they had little awareness and seemingly no desire to prevent goals from flooding in.

Credit to Parker, he identified the problems of this defensive strategy and set about making changes. For their next fixture, he changed the system to a back four, with Parker electing to use more traditional fullbacks.

Their next league game was another loss, but only by a solitary goal. Fulham's chances still looked remote, but this was comparative progress.

Fulham's most frustrating moment of the season came during added time of their game against West Ham United. Following a very late goal by Tomas Soucek, Fulham were given a penalty and a chance to turn their fortunes.

Instead, Ademola Lookman daintily chipped the ball right into Lukasz Fabianski's hands. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but of all the times to attempt a Panenka, this wasn't it.

However, this would prove to be part of a crucial turning point.

Fulham's First Win

In November, Fulham finally collected a win at the expense of West Bromwich Albion.

This game proved Fulham had quality in their ranks, even if they didn't always show it. Uncharacteristically, they were comfortable out of possession and surged forward with intent when the opportunity presented itself.

Aleksander Mitrovic was an effective focal point up top, while Zambo Anguissa broke up West Brom's play in midfield and nullified their potential threats.

At the end of the month, Fulham faced a strong Leicester City team, who at this point were considered dark horses for the title. Not only did Fulham get the three points, but they also looked good in doing so and fully deserved their win.

Previously in the season, Leicester had annihilated Manchester City 5-2. Against Fulham, they could only manage one. Quite an improvement from two months previous.

By reconfiguring his side to soak up pressure, Parker was able to extinguish Leicester's narrow attacking plan and break with regularity.

Fulham scrapped their patient possession approach that worked in the Championship and began working on a counterattacking system much better suited to the Premier League.

Change in Tactics

Fulham's home game against Liverpool was such a contrast to their early season form that it was difficult to believe they were the same club. Liverpool were poor, yes, and lucky to salvage a draw, but Fulham were excellent.

They moved the ball directly, gave Liverpool little time to breath and fearlessly ran at their makeshift defence. Here, it seemed evident that Parker was a manager not afraid to do his homework. He had clearly studied Liverpool exhaustively, allowing him to set up his side that perfectly counteracted their weaknesses.

This level of managerial determination is impressive. It's also necessary, given the difficulty of the task he has at hand.

However, against Tottenham Hotspur, Parker shrewdly changed his style back to how they began the season. Mourinho's teams allow the opposition to hold the ball, making economic use of it and breaking with surgical precision.

With this knowledge, Fulham were able to be more patient and in time unlocked Tottenham's defence. Another display of smart tactical planning by the former England international.

Unfortunately for Fulham, they didn't win this game. In fact, since beating Leicester, they went winless for another 12 matches in the league. They were seldom dominated, but old mistakes they had been making at the season's dawn were creeping back in.

They often looked toothless going forward and didn't have the strength in defence to hold onto their generally narrow leads.

That's not to say Fulham have a poor squad. It's far from great, but they do have some quality players whose strengths are exemplified within their system. Bobby Decordova-Reid, Ivan Cavaleiro and Lookman are solid attacking players, aided by a repurposed Mitrovic who now sits deeper.

The Verdict

From the evidence of this season, Scott Parker looks like a promising coach. He's willing to learn from his mistakes and is committed to what he does.

Furthermore, Fulham do have some great players. The notable examples are Zambo Anguissa and Alphonse Areola, two high-quality footballers who will remain in the elite level even if Fulham don't.

However, are these factors enough to keep Fulham afloat? No.

Fulham have a very tough fixture list towards the end of the season. They've had some good wins this campaign, but have also dropped points in key games. This would not be too fatal, were it not for their dreadful run mid-season.

It is difficult to see Fulham overtaking the teams directly above them (Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion). Steve Bruce may have received flak from various angles this season, but grinding out results that matter is his speciality. Fulham play Newcastle in the season's final game, a game where Bruce's vast experience could be pivotal.

Meanwhile, Brighton have been desperately unlucky as of late. They create chances and play wonderful football, but their results don't reflect this. Luck is a fickle thing and it can change in a second.

Relegation may not be such a bad thing for Fulham. They'll lose players, sure, but they'll receive a parachute payment, adding to their already large transfer budget.

Even if they fail to stay up this season, Scott Parker's Fulham are in safe hands. He's young, hungry and eager to learn – everything a new manager should be.

Can Leeds finally end their London hoodoo away to Fulham on Friday?
Bielsa has yet to taste victory in any of his 15 matches in London since arriving at Leeds in June 2018.

Leeds travel to resurgent Fulham on Friday hoping to end a worrying run of form in London under head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentinian has won plenty of plaudits due to the Whites' high-energy attacking style of play since promotion to the Premier League, with the West Yorkshire outfit currently sat in 12th place.

However, their Achilles heel appears to be when they head to the capital with Bielsa yet to taste victory in any of his 15 matches since arriving at the club in June 2018.

This run comprises 13 defeats, including two FA Cup third-round losses, and only two draws under Bielsa, with Leeds scoring only nine goals in the process and conceding 30 – a rate of two per game.

Fulham will be buoyed by the statistics as victory will see the Cottagers climb out of the relegation zone and above Newcastle, who face fellow strugglers Brighton on Saturday evening.

QPR have profited the most with three wins from three, while Arsenal have also won on both occasions they have faced Leeds – something Fulham hope to emulate at Craven Cottage.

Bielsa's first game in London saw Jack Harrison score an 89th-minute equaliser after Millwall's Jed Wallace had broken the deadlock in the second half of their clash at the Den in September 2018.

A 2-1 FA Cup third-round defeat followed at QPR in January 2019 before the same opponents ran out 1-0 winners a month later, with Brentford winning 2-0 in April to round off the 2018-19 campaign.

Leeds' Sky Bet Championship-winning season did not fare much better in the capital, starting with a 1-0 defeat at newly-promoted Charlton in September 2019 followed by 2-1 losses at Millwall and Fulham in October and December respectively later that year.

Arsenal edged out the impressive Whites in a 1-0 win during their successful FA Cup campaign in January 2020 and QPR secured their third-successive home victory by the same scoreline later in the month.

Leeds ended a run of eight straight defeats with a 1-1 draw at Brentford in February 2020, with Liam Cooper salvaging a point after Said Benrahma opened the scoring for the Bees.

Promotion to the top flight did not change their fortunes as they fell to a 4-1 defeat at Crystal Palace last November and a 3-1 loss to Chelsea in December.

The Whites started 2021 with a 3-0 reverse at Tottenham and more north London misery followed in February with a 4-2 defeat at Arsenal – the only time they have scored more than once in the run.

First-half goals from Jesse Lingard and Craig Dawson secured West Ham a 2-0 win at the London Stadium earlier this month to make it 15 games in a row without a victory, but can Leeds finally end their London hoodoo on Friday?

Fulham player has good chance of great news today – Career bounce possibility

Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is set to be called up to the France squad by Didier Deschamps as an option for the fourth spot in the group.

That's according to L'Equipe, who say he is expected to compete with Benoît Costil as a result of playing regularly with Fulham this season.

Areola joined Scott Parker's side on loan from Paris Saint Germain in the summer, seeking regular playing time that wasn't on offer at the French giants.

Despite a couple of shaky moments, he's largely impressed, with a tally of nine clean sheets and just 33 goals conceded in 28 Premier League games a decent return given Fulham have been fighting relegation all season.

He's now set to be rewarded for his efforts, say L'Equipe, with Deschamps looking at him as the fourth goalkeeping option for his squad during this international break.

That is because Areola, who was a World Champion with France not long ago, now 'plays regularly' at Fulham, something he was not getting at either PSG or during a loan spell with Real Madrid last season.

Of course, fourth choice means he's still pretty far down the pecking order but with Deschamps looking at his options, the Fulham man has put himself in with a chance of making the Euros this summer.

Marcelo Bielsa insists Scott Parker has earned respect in the Premier League
The two bosses won promotion from the Sky Bet Championship last season.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa insists Fulham counterpart Scott Parker has already earned his Premier League wings.

The 65-year-old Argentinian will go head-to-head with Parker at Craven Cottage on Friday evening as a man who is 25 years his junior and a managerial fledgling by comparison continues the process of engineering a recovery which has dragged his club firmly into the race for top-flight survival.

Bielsa, whose side won last season's Sky Bet Championship while Fulham also secured promotion via the play-offs, has been hugely impressed by the way Parker has gone about his job this season.

He said: "He's a manager who has earned the recognition of all those in the Premier League.

"He's gone through difficult moments in the Championship and in the Premier League and in all of them, he's managed to overcome them by imposing his philosophy, and the system that he uses is a very creative one."

Leeds adjusted to life in the Premier League almost from the off, beating Fulham 4-3 in their second game and hovering in relative safety in mid-table for much of the campaign to date.

Parker's men, however, found the going significantly tougher, winning only two of their first 22 games before embarking upon a run of three victories, two of them against Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool, in their last seven to edge themselves to within two points of safety.

Bielsa said: "The idea of the manager is reflected in Fulham's play. In the first round, it was difficult for him to impose his style; in the second round of fixtures, they've started to do this a lot better.

"I remember the style when we faced them in the Championship and it's the same style, but they've managed to impose it in a lot of games in the Premier League.

"Apart from that, they are a team that plays on an even keel in the majority of their games. In the games against top-six teams, they play to impose themselves and not just defend, not to avoid being beaten."

Leeds head for London having won only one of their last six games and with Bielsa promising to prepare exactly as he did for high-flying Chelsea's trip to Elland Road last Saturday.

He said: "I always consider the same factors: to defend better, to attack better, trying to have the ball and avoid the opponent building up sums of passes, and overcome them with energy, enthusiasm, organisation and the management of the game.

"These are some of the aspects I remember at this time, and there will be no game to which I will not apply these."

Can't Underestimate A Fulham Team Playing For Scott Parker – Leeds United Legend

Former Leeds United star Jermaine Beckford has stressed that the Whites cannot afford to underestimate an in-form Fulham team who seem to be playing for Scott Parker.

Leeds have won just one of their last six Premier League games but the point they earned against Chelsea last weekend was a source of confidence.

They are still comfortably sitting in mid-table and are set to travel to London on Friday night to take on a relegation-threatened Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Cottagers seem to have turned the corner after looking condemned to relegation for much of the season and are now just two points behind 17th placed Newcastle.

Beckford is not looking at the league table as he believes Fulham are looking good and the players are finally playing for Parker, who seems to have galvanised the team.

However, he feels if Leeds play at their best, not many teams in the Premier League can handle their intensity.

Beckford said on The Official Leeds United Podcast: "I am expecting a tough game, to be honest.

"League position aside, Fulham have started to find a little bit of form and they are starting to play for Scott Parker.

"They look very organised, they have got a couple of players who are doing well and so I think it's definitely a game we cannot afford to underestimate our opponents.

"But at the same time, I think we should keep doing what we do best because when we are overrunning people, getting in their faces, passing the ball quickly not many teams can deal with that."

Fulham have won two of their last five games and one of those victories came against Liverpool at Anfield.

This Is How We Can Get At Leeds United – Scott Parker

Scott Parker has stressed that Leeds United's attacking instincts will give his Fulham side a chance to get at them, but insists that his team will need to match the intensity of Marcelo Bielsa's men.

Fulham are still sitting in 18th in the league table, but their recent form has been commendable and they are now just two points behind 17th placed Newcastle.

The west London side will host Leeds on Friday night at Craven Cottage and Parker is keen to see them get something from the game in their bid to survive in the Premier League.

The Fulham boss admits that Leeds are a unique side because of the intensity and energy they bring to each game and conceded that his team will need to match them on those counts if they want something on Friday night.

Parker said in a press conference: "They are a unique side in the way they set up, you don't come across it a lot.

The intensity which Leeds play is always one you need to match.

We understand fully what Leeds bring, their energy and the intensity of the game.

We're looking forward to the game, it's a good game, a big game."

The Fulham manager is well aware of Leeds' attacking style of football and feels that while it can put pressure on his defence, his players will get their opportunity to get at the Whites on the counter attack.

"They commit a lot of bodies, and score a lot of goals.

"Their game is expansive and while that can cause you stress and pressure, the flip side is there is a chance you can get at them in transition.

"You need to handle the attacking phase of their game and your structure has to be good and individually you have to be tuned in."

Leeds have not won a league game away in London since April 2018.

FA Cup & Premier League predictions: Lawro v racing driver Billy Monger, star of Comic Relief's Big Red Nose Challenge

Racing driver Billy Monger takes on Lawro at predictions this week after completing an epic challenge to raise money for Comic Relief.

The 21-year-old, who had both legs amputated after a crash in 2017, covered 140 miles over four days by walking, cycling and kayaking.

You can see how he did it by watching Billy Monger's Big Red Nose Challenge on BBC iPlayer.

Billy was joined along the way by a host of celebrity supporters but the Tottenham fan got a big surprise before he even began, when he met Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

"I was ready to go up to Newcastle to start my walk, and I had my headphones on in the car when we set off so I didn't know a thing about it," he told BBC Sport.

"It was a shock to the system when we arrived to the Spurs training ground, and then it was a brilliant surprise to meet Jose. He is a top man."

Billy, 21, is taking on Lawro this weekend, and predicting the scores of the four FA Cup sixth-round ties, and four Premier League games.

He said: "I played a bit of football with my mates when I was a kid but it wasn't something I took that seriously, because racing is my passion.

"But I started supporting Tottenham when I was about 10 or 11 because the boss of my karting team was a Spurs fan and I just went along with that. The older I've got, the more I've got into them. They are my team now.

"My favourite players are Harry Kane and Dele Alli and, before he left, Christian Eriksen. He is an incredible player always stood out when he was playing for us because his squad number, 23, was my racing number too. I felt a real association with him through that."

Billy went to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time earlier this month when he was a special guest for their 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

"There were obviously no fans there, which was a shame because you want that atmosphere, it's part of watching a match" he said.

"But at the same time the fact the stadium was empty did give me an opportunity to kind of look at it and take it all in, and see just how amazing it is. Hopefully I will be back soon, when it is filled with our fans."

LAWRO'S PREDICTION
Fulham v Leeds (20:00 GMT, Premier League)

Leeds haven't won - or scored - for a little while now, three games to be exact, which is very unlike them.

That's why I worry for Fulham a bit here, despite Scott Parker's side being in much better form.

When these two sides met at Elland Road back in September, we were finding out what Leeds were like in the top flight - they won 4-3, after losing to Liverpool by the same scoreline the previous weekend.

Fulham were like a different side then, and leaked a lot of goals. They have tightened up a lot since then, but I am expecting Leeds to start firing again here.

Lawro's prediction: 0-2

Billy's prediction: Leeds score a lot of goals but Fulham are looking decent at the moment. 1-1

Decordova-Reid to miss Leeds game

Fulham face Leeds United tomorrow night without Bobby Decordova-Reid as well as Tom Cairney.

Decordova-Reid has failed to recover from the knock that ruled the forward out against Manchester City last weekend, and captain Cairney has an ongoing knee problem.

Scott Parker insists this will be a different Fulham, both in personnel and approach, to the one that was beaten 4-3 at Elland Road in September.

Of the back four, only Kenny Tete has a chance of playing, while the head coach is confident the mishaps that saw City gifted three uncharacteristic goals won't get repeated.

He said: "Those mistakes, it wasn't about playing out from the back – they were just mistakes.

"One of the goals, the ball hits a backside and rebounds into the path of (Gabriel) Jesus.

"I expect us to play Leeds the way we have in the previous 10-12 games".

They have lost nine league matches at Craven Cottage; only bottom club Sheffield have been beaten more often at home. All nine of those losses came against clubs currently in the top 11.
Fulham's only two home league victories this season came against the sides currently below them in the table.
They have kept clean sheets in six of their past 11 league fixtures.
Scott Parker's side have scored eight home league goals, fewer than any other side.
If selected, Aleksandar Mitrovic will make his 100th Premier League appearance.

Leeds United

Leeds are winless in three league matches, equalling their worst run of the season.
They have failed to score in four of their past five games, as many as in their first 23 league games this term.
The Whites are without a Premier League goal in four hours and 36 minutes.
They have taken 21 points from a possible 24 against the teams currently occupying the bottom seven positions.
Leeds have lost all five games in London this season, conceding 16 goals.
They are winless in their past 16 away games in the capital in all competitions, drawing twice and losing 14.
Patrick Bamford has scored 12 goals in 15 league games played on Fridays, including October's hat-trick at Aston Villa.
Illan Meslier could become the youngest goalkeeper to record 10 clean sheets in a single Premier League season.

Scott Parker insists Brighton vs Newcastle is an 'irrelevance' to Fulham ahead of huge Leeds clash

Fulham take on Leeds on Friday evening before relegation rivals Brighton and Newcastle do battle on Saturday

Scott Parker has branded Newcastle and Brighton an 'irrelevance' in his Fulham side's bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Cottagers currently occupy 18th place and the third relegation spot and trail Newcastle by two points and Brighton by three points with nine matches remaining.

However, they have a huge opportunity to lift themselves out of the bottom three on Friday evening when they welcome Leeds United to Craven Cottage.

A win over Marcelo Bielsa's side will lift them above Newcastle, and out of the relegation zone, while also piling the pressure on the Seagulls and the Magpies heading into Saturday's huge clash between the two sides at the AMEX Stadium.

However, Parker insists there is no 'extra pressure' on his side this weekend, despite their two relegation rivals facing off against each other.

"No pressure, the pressure comes from within, from us," Parker told Football.London.

"I've been consistent in my message. It's an irrelevance what they're doing. The main focus for us is Friday night against Leeds to put in a performance what we've put in over the last months now to get to this point, needs to come again.

"The main focus is let's go and get three points on Friday night, let's put in a performance to get three points and if we do that it puts us in a good place on the front foot."

When asked if the fact Fulham play before Newcastle and Brighton will serve as a psychological boost to his side, Parker replied: "The biggest boost will be three points.

"I understand we play before the other two teams around us play each other but the biggest boost that we have is that we need to perform on Friday.

"The main focus is to put in a performance, attempt to win that game and get three points and then we move on to the next. Whatever is to be Saturday is really irrelevant, what is relevant is making sure we do our job."

Pre-Leeds Press Conference

Scott Parker believes Fulham are a different side now to the one that fell to defeat at Elland Road in September.

Our second Premier League fixture was certainly an eventful one, and it was Leeds United who just about found themselves on the right end of a seven-goal thriller.

"We're a different team, certainly a different animal this time, I think you can see that," Parker explained.

"Personnel, the way the team's grown and the way we've developed over that period, of course is different to when we last played against Leeds.

"Can we take things from that game, and other games we've played? Of course we can.

"But certainly us as a team, we've definitely moved on from where we were when we last played.

"They're a very, very good side. A unique side, in the way they play and set up.

"It's quite unique, you don't come across it a lot. Certainly not in this division, we've experienced it a couple of times last year with Leeds, and Cardiff played a similar way.

"The intensity with which Leeds play is always one that you need to match. We were in the same league last year and we've played them this year, so we understand fully what Leeds bring, their energy and intensity.

"As always, we're looking forward to the game. It's a good game, a big game, and we're raring to go."

With Marcelo Bielsa's side not afraid to throw caution to the wind, it's little surprise that very few of their fixtures end in a draw.

And while Parker knows his team have to be wary of that gung-ho approach, he also acknowledged that there could be chances to capitalise.

"They commit a lot of bodies," he stated. "I think we've seen that.

"They score a lot of goals, I think they're right up there in the charts in terms of chances created.

"Bodies in the box, they always commit a high volume of bodies and their game is very expansive at times.

"Of course while that can cause you stress and put pressure on you, there is on the flipside of that an opportunity at times to get at them through transitions, through counter attacks.

"There's two elements to that; first and foremost you need to be able to withstand the intensity and the numbers they create and how they go about it in the attacking phase of the game, and we need to be able to deal with that.

"That means your structure's got to be good, individually you've got to be very tuned in on that.

"And then on the transitions there is an opportunity that you can look to try and exploit and try and be deadly."

Exclusive: Fulham transfer stance on 29-year-old revealed as Nottingham Forest hover

Fulham are open to letting Anthony Knockaert leave the club this summer with Nottingham Forest interested in a permanent move for the winger, sources have informed Football League World.

Knockaert helped Fulham win promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last season, before making his season-long loan deal from Brighton and Hove Albion permanent at the end of the campaign for around £10million.

Knockaert was allowed to leave Fulham last summer, though, with the 29-year-old joining Forest on loan initially until January before extending his time at the City Ground until the end of the season.

The Frenchman has been a key player since reuniting with Chris Hughton, scoring two goals and chipping in with one assist in 28 Championship appearances this season.

Sources have now told Football League World that Fulham are open to selling Knockaert this summer, with Scott Parker looking to explore other options even if the Cottagers are relegated to the Championship.

Forest do have an interest in signing Knockaert on a permanent basis, but the club look set to review their finances over the next couple of months before making a decision on his future, with his high wages potentially proving to be a stumbling block.

Forest did include an option to buy in the loan deal back in October, but instead chose to extend his time at the City Ground in January rather than take up that option.

Fulham's league position in the Premier League is still precarious. Parker's side sit 18th in the league standings and two points adrift of safety, having lost only two of their last eight games.

Forest, meanwhile, are still looking to secure their Championship status having gone winless in their last five matches. The Reds sit 18th in the league table, nine points above the bottom three.

Fulham: Journalist hails on-loan Opoku

Journalist Peter Rutzler has been speaking on the latest edition of The Athletic's Fulhamish podcast to discuss all things Fulham after their defeat to Manchester City at the weekend.

Rutzler was discussing an interview he had done with the on-loan Jerome Opoku recently to speak about the youngster's time away from Craven Cottage at Plymouth Argyle.

The central defender has spent the season at the League One side, where he has made 27 appearances for the Pilgrims in the league, netting on one occasion (via Transfermarkt).

Previous to this season's loan, Opoku spent the 2019/20 campaign out on loan at Accrington Stanley where he racked up 21 league appearances in his first season away from his parent club.

Speaking about the 22-year-old, Rutzler had this to say about his time out on loan.

He said: "He came across as a really impressive guy.

"He's very headstrong, he knows what he wants to do and he sees those different pathways you know, the comparison between, say, Ryan Sessegnon going straight in, but also someone like Marek Rodak or Marcus Bettinelli, who's been on a few loans and then has come back and made into the first team.

"It's always an unusual place to go, Plymouth, because of the amount of travelling you have to do; he seems to be taking all of that in his stride.

"Now he's kicking on, really, and he wants to keep pushing and go up the levels."

The youngster opened his account for Plymouth in a 2-2 draw with Portsmouth back in November with the defender's goal ensuring the Pilgrims a point in the Dockyard derby.

TIF Thoughts on Rutzler's comments...

Opoku is yet to make his first-team debut for Fulham, however, Rutzler spoke very highly of the youngster which makes you question where his future with the club is if the Whites manage to maintain their Premier League status this season. Alternatively, you can question whether he may be given a chance if they do drop back down to the Championship – though he appears to be doing the right things out on loan.

Fulham vs Leeds United: Lookman vs Ayling, and other key battles | Premier League

Fulham and Leeds United will battle it out on Friday night at Craven Cottage in the Premier League. Leeds won the reverse fixture in an entertaining goal-fest, as they narrowly beat the Cottagers 4-3 in September last year.

But, heading into Friday's fixture, the hosts are the team in form as they have won two of their last five fixtures, one of which was against defending champions Liverpool. Leeds, meanwhile, have lost three of their last five Premier League games.

Let's take a look at 3 key battles that could decide the outcome of the match between Fulham and Leeds United.

Fulham vs Leeds United – 3 Key Battles

#1 Ademola Lookman vs Luke Ayling
Fulham attacker Ademola Lookman has been one of their best players this season as his pace, trickery and passing has brought him four goals and three assists in the league.

He will most likely start on the left side of Fulham's attack on Friday night and take on Leeds right-back Luke Ayling.

Ayling is a tenacious and quick defender, who likes to put in strong tackles, while also bombing forward at every opportunity. Lookman will have to offer a threat going forward, while also keep Ayling in his own half.

#2 Raphinha vs Ola Aina
Leeds winger Raphinha has had a strong season from the wings, as Lookman has done for Fulham.

The speedy Brazilian has been a big threat to opposing defences from the right side and he has chipped in with five goals and five assists this season.

The 24-year-old will be up against Ola Aina, who should start at left-back for Scott Parker's side.

Aina, too, can be a goal threat, and we could see a lot of action on that side of the pitch with the likes of Lookman, Ayling, Raphinha and Aina fighting it out.

#3 Tyler Roberts vs Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa
Tyler Roberts had a decent game last time around against Chelsea and the Leeds midfielder could keep his place in the starting XI due to the absence of Pablo Hernandez. Roberts likes to drive forward with the ball at his feet and link with the striker.

He will be up against Fulham's midfield strongman Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa who is a strong and physical player, and can contribute in attack and defence.

Anguissa, too, likes to drive forward with the ball, and we could see Roberts and the Fulham midfielder clash in the middle of the park.

'There is an opportunity': Scott Parker says Leeds have a weakness he'll try and exploit

Leeds United will hope to pick up their first win in four Premier League games when they head to Fulham on Friday night.

It won't be an easy game for Marcelo Bielsa's side, however, considering how much the Cottagers have improved in recent weeks.

Scott Parker's side has kept five clean sheets since the start of February, including in the shock win away at Liverpool.

And victory over Leeds at Craven Cottage would lift them out of the relegation zone for the first time since December.

Parker insists Fulham are a "different animal" to the team which suffered a 4-3 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road in September.

And even though he acknowledges that the Whites cause "stress and pressure" with their intense attacking play, he says the opportunity is there to get at them on the counter.

"They commit a lot of bodies forward, they score a lot of goals," Parker told Sky Sports.

"They are right up there in the charts in terms of chances created and bodies in the box.

They always commit a high volume of bodies and their games are expensive (in terms of goals conceded) at times.

"So, while that cause you stress and pressure, there is an opportunity at times to get at them on transition on counter-attacks.

"But you need to be able to (deal with) the intensity and the numbers they create, so your structure has got to be good and individually you have got to be tuned in on that.

"But there is an opportunity you can try and exploit and try and be deadly as well."

TBR View:

Leeds may have won just one of their last six in the Premier League, losing four times in that run, but their goalless draw with Chelsea last time out was a very positive result.

Fulham, meanwhile, have tightened up at the back, and they're certainly capable of scoring goals, so it should be an exciting game in which both sides will certainly fancy their chances.

Scott Parker reveals Fulham blueprint for tackling 'unique' Leeds United

Leeds United make the trip to Fulham on Friday looking to extend the gap to the bottom three with a win.

The landscape has changed dramatically since Leeds' first home game of the season when they overcame the Cottagers 4-3.

From then, Fulham have managed to claw their way back from the abyss and are looking a good shout for survival based on recent results, while Leeds are still well clear of trouble.

The upcoming clash at Craven Cottage could change the dynamic of the battle for survival somewhat, whoever triumphs.

Leeds know that a win could take them out of reach of the relegation zone heading into April while a defeat puts the pressure on somewhat.

It's set to be an interesting clash of styles on Friday night with Scott Parker finding results to go with his slick passing style, while Marcelo Bielsa's all-out attacking style has come in for significant praise as well as some criticism this season.

We saw a gripping encounter at Elland Road, but Parker is expected a fairly one-sided spread of possession that he can take advantage of:

"Leeds are a unique side in the way they play. They commit a lot of bodies." He told Fulham's official website.

"That can cause stress but there's a flip side where you can get to them through counters."

Parker has experimented with a few different approaches against Bielsa in the three games prior tomorrow and he's never got the better of the games, even if they won back in December 2019.

Their defensive record of late lends itself to playing in this manner, and it served them very well in their trip to Anfield so you can't blame Parker.

However, even with Liverpool's individual quality, we're playing with far more threat at the moment and sitting deep is asking for trouble in any game when it's not your first port of call.

It'll be an interesting game regardless of how they play because they have the quality to hurt us no matter how they set up.

Fulham must find consistency and balance in attack

Adrian Clarke analyses Scott Parker's options going forward ahead of vital match with Leeds

Adrian Clarke looks at key tactical points in Matchweek 29.

Fulham must start scoring more goals at Craven Cottage if they are to stay up, beginning with the visit of Leeds United this Friday.

Scott Parker's side have found the back of the net just eight times in 15 home matches, the lowest return in the Premier League.

The statistics show that they have created 114 chances in home fixtures, which is more than Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Leicester City, Everton and West Ham United.

Yet clear-cut opportunities have been hard to come by, with just 13 regarded as big chances. Only Southampton have created fewer at home with 11.

Right balance
Parker has made his team increasingly solid from a defensive perspective, using 10 different formations so far.

Fulham have only conceded five goals in their last eight matches home and away, closing the opposition down with great authority.

The key now, especially at Craven Cottage, is to strike a better balance between solidity and adventure going forward.

Leeds' style of play means they can leave themselves open at the back, so this could be the right time for Parker to encourage a more positive approach.

Minutes per home goals compared

Club      Mins/home goal
Fulham      168.8
West Brom      150
Sheffield United      135
Burnley      112.5
Brighton      96.9

Fulham's forward line has rotated throughout the campaign with a number of different players asked to lead their attack.

A lack of goals has in part contributed to Parker's selection policy, but he also likes to adjust his tactics on a match-by-match basis.

Ademola Lookman has been Fulham's most consistently dangerous forward.

With seven direct goal involvements, as well as the most shots and key passes, the 23-year-old is a must-pick for Parker.

Fulham's attackers compared

Player     Goals     Shots     Conv. rate     Chances created
De Cordova-Reid     5     19     26.3%     11
Lookman     4     40     10%     47
Cavaleiro     3     31     9.7%     29
Maja     2     13     15.4%     3
Mitrovic     2     34     5.9%     19
Loftus-Cheek     1     23     4.4%     15

Last season's top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic has played a part in five goals, despite making only 10 starts, but has found the back of the net just twice.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid boasts Fulham's best conversion rate, but he has emerged as a major injury doubt for the Leeds match.

Parker will almost certainly turn to the next player in that category, January signing Josh Maja, who scored twice on his debut at Everton.

Ivan Cavaleiro and Ruben Loftus-Cheek provide Parker with tactical flexibility because they can occupy various positions, but their end product has been low this season.

Unlike their off-the-ball work, there is no clear identity to the way Fulham perform inside the opposition half.

To build chemistry and partnerships, a little more stability is required in terms of team selection in attack.

If Fulham can get the right balance in this area, just as they have done with their defence, staying in the top flight will prove a much more realistic proposition.

Tom Cairney to undergo injections as he struggles to recover from knee injury

Tom Cairney will undergo a course of injections in the coming days as he battles an ongoing knee issue that threatens to rule him out for the rest of the season.

The Fulham club captain sustained the injury during pre-season but after managing the problem through the early stages of the campaign, he has not featured since Fulham's trip to Newcastle on December 19.

Parker says the new course of treatment was recommended by a specialist.

What injury is Cairney struggling with?
Cairney made 10 appearances at the start of the campaign but was forced onto the sidelines in late December.

Last month, Parker revealed Cairney had undergone laser treatment, and the 30-year-old then made a return to modified training.

But Cairney is still struggling to manage the pain. After further specialist advice, he will now receive injections.

Cairney suffered a serious knee injury during the 2017-18 season but this issue is not thought to be in the same knee.

What did Parker say?
He said: "It's proving to be a tricky one at the moment.

"There's some injections we can look at which we're going to do. This course of injections we hope speeds up this healing process; that's what a specialist has recommended we do over the next week or 10 days and then we'll build up again and see if we've made some steps forward.

"You're getting to that point with Tom where he's been out for some time now and the issue is still ongoing.

"So, of course, there's that fear, definitely (that he could miss the rest of the season). We are confident and what brings us that confidence is that he is close.

"But this is an ongoing issue and time is against him with nine games to go."

Did anything else come up in the press conference?
Parker also revealed Mario Lemina and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who are due to represent Gabon and Cameroon respectively, will both be prevented by Fulham from featuring in one of their two upcoming international matches next week.

Both players have fixtures scheduled to take place in countries that are currently on England's 'Red List', and as a result would require two weeks' quarantine upon return, per government guidance.

Anguissa will not be taking part in Cameroon's African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier with Cape Verde on March 26, while Lemina will play no part in Gabon's away match in Angola on March 29.

What did Parker say about the international players?
"The players that have games in red list countries won't be playing in those countries," said Parker. "We've got two. Those players would then miss 14 days and two Premier League games. It's just not feasible for a club like us to be able to do that. So they won't be playing in those countries.

"They are Andre-Frank Anguissa and Mario Lemina. They have two games, one of the games is fine. But there is one game for each of them that is in a red list country."

Teenage midfielder Fabio Carvalho has caught the eye playing for Fulham's Under 23s team

WHAT HAS HE GOT?

Playing as a No 10, this teenager was the main instigator of attacks even though he was one of the youngest in Fulham's Under 23 team.

He showed great awareness and control, and created two chances with pacy pinpoint crosses.

I liked the way he accepts the ball with a soft touch and a good idea of where he'll play the next pass. He seemed to understand when and when not to press, and move to support his striker. In short, he has football intelligence.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

I didn't see him have enough confidence to use his left foot.

He is not the strongest, but that will come. As the match drifted on it became scrappy and the coach moved Carvalho out wide, where he kept the team shape but could not attract the ball.

I'm told he has a decent goal ratio at youth level. It is early days, but he shows promise.

Scott Parker hopeful Fulham captain Tom Cairney CAN feature for his side in their Premier League relegation battle but concedes ongoing knee issue is making his recovery tougher

Scott Parker admitted he is fearful that captain Tom Cairney could miss the remainder of the season.

The 30-year-old has not featured for Fulham since their 1-1 draw at Newcastle in December and has been struggling to return to full fitness due to an ongoing knee problem.

'You're getting to that point in the season, you're also getting to that point with Tom where he's been out for some time now and the issue is still ongoing,' the Fulham boss said.

Scott Parker admits he is fearful Fulham captain Tom Cairney could miss the rest of the season

'So, of course there's that fear, definitely (that he could miss the end of the season).

'We are confident and what brings us that confidence is that he is close. He has managed to be able to train, come off it, train, come off it.

'But this is an ongoing issue and time is against him with nine games to go. We're still hoping that we can get a fit Tom Cairney on the pitch.'

Parker has said before that they were pursuing multiple treatment options for Cairney, including a laser treatment, and announced on Thursday they would be looking at injections on the recommendation of a specialist.

Fulham host Leeds on Friday in the last game before the international break, but Parker said Frank Anguissa and Mario Lemina will not be away for the full time, with their respective nations Cameroon and Gabon due to play in red-list countries.

'It's not ideal in the current situation, players travelling,' Parker said.

'But at the same time, there is a big tournament and the managers that are involved at that level, in terms of managing their countries, they need that time to prepare for what are big tournaments in the summer.

Parker revealed they would be looking at injections on the recommendation of a specialist

'On a selfish note, from my point of view, of course it's not ideal. We've got a massive run-in now, we have had a lot of games. Players (will be going) all over the place and the situation we are in, the pandemic, there are a lot of rules, regulations when they come back from the countries they are going to. It's a constant fear and a worry.

'But on the flipside I also understand if you are a manager of a country, you need time to prepare. Come the summer it will be you under scrutiny, it's going to be you that's in the spotlight. These are the moments you need to prepare and work out the best way to go. It's catch-22 really.'

He added: 'The players that have games in red-list countries won't be playing in those countries. We've got two.

The international break has come at a "great time" to help Leeds United to get players like Rodrigo back up to full fitness, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Whites would be able to work on getting certain stars physically and mentally ready for a return to action.

Speaking on Wednesday, as quoted by BBC journalist Adam Pope, Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Rodrigo was a doubt for Friday's clash against Fulham.

Rodrigo's latest problem is a twist after he only made his comeback from injury in last weekend's draw against Chelsea.

Liam Cooper is out with illness, while fellow defender Robin Koch has only recently returned to playing under-23s football.

Neither Cooper nor Rodrigo have been called up by their respective national sides.

Meanwhile, Koch is highly unlikely to be recalled to the Germany squad after his lack of game time.

As such, McLeish has suggested Leeds could benefit from the international break.

Asked if he thought the break could give Leeds a boost, McLeish told Football Insider's Russell Edge: "Certainly. If none of your players are going away over the international break. That is definitely the caveat.

"If you have players who have not been called up then it's a great time to get them on the treatment table. You can pamper them, get them buzzing again, massage their muscles, their egos and mentalities as well.

"That's the key, that is definitely the key for Leeds. Have them absolutely raging and raring to go when the international games are over."

The likes of Mateusz Klich, Ezgjan Alioski and Tyler Roberts have all been called up to their respective national sides.

Meanwhile, Illan Meslier has been selected for France's under-21s.

'This will not be an easy game' – Fulham v Leeds United: Our view

Marcelo Bielsa takes Leeds United to Craven Cottage this Friday night to take on Fulham.

Leeds are looking to build on last Saturday's 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Elland Road and end a run in London that makes woeful reading.

Last time out, Leeds beat Fulham 4-3 at Elland Road, but Scott Parker's side are showing signs of life in the relegation battle and will pose the Whites a threat.

As always, the LeedsAllOver team – Kris (FA5), Toby (Neutral) & Alfie (N12) – deliver their predictions...

This is the best chance we have of breaking our London curse, but it's a tough game against a side that has found their mojo.

You could see in the Championship that Scott Parker was trying hard to implement a possession-based style, that eventually came good with promotion as they found a way to become harder to beat, incidentally after shipping three at Elland Road.

The same has happened this season, with their form turning around resulting in more clean sheets and wins on the board.

With that in mind, we know we're getting a harder game than the one we got in September, and it's more likely to be a lower-scoring affair; barring the recent game against Man City (a one-off), they haven't let in three since they lost 3-2 to Everton in November.

I can see us getting the better of them in the midfield with the quality we have both through the middle and in wide positions, and that could be crucial to which side asserts dominance in the game.

I'm very hopeful that Tyler Roberts can continue on from his lively performance against Chelsea and back it up with a goal or assist here, along with the huge boost of Patrick Bamford being ready to play.

I'm confident we can get a much-needed win at Fulham. 1-0.

Despite what an initial glance at the Premier League table might suggest, this will not be an easy game for Leeds.

Right now, Fulham look to have as good a chance of safety as any of the sides battling against relegation right now, and given the quality they were up against, it feels hard to write them off on the basis of that defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

Indeed, given their desperate need for points, you would expect Fulham to be throwing plenty at Leeds, who are a side we all know by now play that way anyway, so this does look to be an entertaining encounter, with that attacking emphasis meaning Marcelo Bielsa's side will surely be grateful for the apparent availability of Patrick Bamford for this one.

But for all that attacking intent, the battle between these two side's enforcers in the centre of the park – Kalvin Phillips and Harrison Reed – could be absolutely crucial for control of the game, which looks set to make this a fascinating watch from a number of aspects.

Leeds have certainly been the more impressive of these two promoted teams this season, but Fulham's greater need for points can do funny things in football – just ask Liverpool – so I get the feeling that Scott Parker's side might be able to nick something from this. 2-2.

If you take the London factor out of this game, it's one that Leeds United would be expected to win. However, I'm sat here worrying that the 'curse' will continue against an improving Fulham side.

The two squads are matched up quite nicely and it should be a good game to watch. Like Toby, I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Phillips and Reed get stuck into each other in the middle.

Should the stars align for Leeds in the capital and lady luck get on the coach with Bielsa, it would be a massive result and all-but secure a place in next season's Premier League.

At this stage of the season that would be some achievement and really give us a lift heading into the international break.

Whether I see that happening is another matter, though, with Leeds' record in London something that leaves me feeling flat heading into the fixture.

I'll back a 1-1 draw, but that scoreline could swing either way as well.

Scott Parker has found a way to thrive but Fulham's greatest survival challenges still lie ahead

To even be within a win of safety at this stage highlights the consistent upward learning curve Parker and his team have embarked on

It is two years this month that Scott Parker found himself sat in the big chair of the home dugout at Craven Cottage. The circumstances of 2019 were not so different to how they are now in 2021.

Then, his purpose was to mastermind a great escape. Fulham were 10 points from safety with 10 to play, a malaise reflected in Parker's appointment as their third manager of the 2018/19 season, following on from Slavisa Jokanovic and Claudio Ranieri. With the rot irredeemable, five defeats in Parker's first five matches confirmed an inevitable relegation.

The circumstances now are much more in his favour. Yes, Fulham are still in the relegation zone, but safety is only two points away. The game extra they have played is offset by Newcastle and Brighton - two and three points ahead, respectively - squaring off on Saturday evening. Anything other than a Brighton win means victory for Fulham on Friday, over Leeds United, will take them out of the bottom three for the first time since the second week of December.

Few would have watched Fulham early on and concluded they'd have even a whiff of staying up with nine games to play. They had just four points after nine, in disarray at the back, cycling through 10 different defensive starters during this period. Each seemingly a clown out of the car stepping on the same old rake.

Thus you could argue the brunt of the"great" part of this particular escape has already happened. Because since Valentines Day, Fulham have picked up 11 points from seven, cutting that gap from eight to two. They also picked up three clean sheets - the most notable in a 1-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield - to take them to nine overall, joint seventh in the Premier League.

In an alternate universe, we may attribute this uptick to the "new manager bounce" fallacy. But here in the reality of Plague Island, the credit is well and truly Parker's.

Is it time to start giving him credit? Or is that a bit like thanking a surgeon for removing a spike from your foot and limping off as the blood slowly fills your shoe? Fixtures away to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United await Fulham, before a final-day showdown at home to Newcastle. Challenging assignments are still to come.

But maybe for that reason it's worth stepping off the relentless treadmill of this Covid-20/21 season and toasting Parker for getting to this stage - if only to note the work he has done thus far. And the fact he's still in the job. The talk up to this point, certainly what has cut through to the mainstream, has been, well, almost exclusively memes.

The melodic pattern of his post-match interviews dovetailing neatly with Mike Skinner's flow with The Streets. His wholesome, perfectly manicured aesthetic: a boyish facade with a chiselled jaw and perfect hair giving us a glimpse of what Band of Brothers would have been in Disney's hands. A GQ Action Man doll that could steal Barbie away from Ken.

Scott Parker in all his splendour, directing Fulham to a win a Anfield
(Getty Images)

Yet what we have before us is a manager growing into his own perfect skin. After a season of individual growth in the Championship and months of trial and error in the top-flight, Parker seems to have found a way to thrive, not just merely exist. Though an 18th placing does not suggest it, the 40-year-old is doing a lot right.

The upturn in form has come through persisting with a flowing style that is starting to return points. Fulham are seventh when it comes to passes made in the opposition half and ninth for chances created out of the 20 league sides. In a perfect expected Goals world, they would be 14th. Alas, this imperfect one has seen just 22 goals. Nevertheless, the right moves are being made.

To be fair, this triumph of persistence and belief has not gone totally unnoticed. "He's gone through difficult moments in the Championship and in the Premier League and in all of them, he's managed to overcome them by imposing his philosophy, and the system that he uses is a very creative one," said Marcelo Bielsa, a pretty sound judge on those matters.

Parker's personnel management also warrants praise. We can probably start with the fact that Aleksandar Mitrovic and Abou Kamara remain willing teammates in west London despite their tear-up during a yoga session at the start of 2019.

But the care behind the scenes among the less volatile members of the group has ensured the early missteps had not gutted morale. The word is his rapport with the playing staff was one of the reasons Fulham's decision-makers kept faith with Parker when others might have cast him aside.

Perhaps the clearest sign of a happy camp is how well temporary players have integrated. Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (Paris Saint-Germain), centre-back and captain Joachim Andersen (Lyon), spritely craftsman Ademola Lookman (RB Leipzig) and livewire Josh Maja (Bordeaux) are all on deals that expire at the end of the season. Yet these loan rangers have committed to the cause, playing critical roles in this burst that takes Fulham into the home straight.

And yet, no one inside the club are engaging in any false pretences. Outright and worthwhile judgement will only come after 38 games. No one could be critical of Fulham if they low-blocked their way to safety, but the faith in the process has paid off in the last month. The next two months will be when it really counts.

Leeds, the first of the remaining four home fixtures, will be a stern test of their mettle. Bielsa's side are the league's great equalisers: their controlled chaos a dare to all-comers to lay down their arms, disregard their principles and indulge in a bare-knuckle scrap. The desperation for just a sixth win in what would be 30 attempts may see Fulham do just that.

In many ways, we'll find out how robust Fulham's belief actually is, in a few different things. In the numbers, and the idea that eventually xG turns to G. In Parker, and his understanding of this group, and their fighting spirit. And that this time, unlike 2019, Fulham have enough about them in the dugout and on the pitch to survive.

Report: Nottingham Forest want permanent Anthony Knockaert deal

Nottingham Forest are keen on signing Anthony Knockaert permanently during the summer transfer window.

According to Football League World, the Reds will hold discussions with Fulham, with the Premier League outfit open to a sale.

The Cottagers will even consider letting him leave Craven Cottage if they're relegated from the top-flight at the end of the season.

Scott Parker's team are in the relegation zone but have been playing pretty well of late; with supporters dreaming of survival.

Knockaert won promotion with Fulham last season and that saw a clause activated which said they had to sign him for £10 million.

He departed for a loan spell at Forest, however, without making a Premier League appearance for the club.

The 29-year-old has played 28 games for the Reds, proving a constant threat when called upon.

Signing him permanently won't come without obstacles though.

It is thought that Knockaert earns £35,000-a-week at Fulham and that could prove out of Forest's reach.

The Reds are battling to save their Championship status and were poor in defeat to Norwich on Tuesday night.

Knockaert was ruled out through injury for that one but Hughton will hope to have him back for tomorrow's game at Brentford.

Should Forest sign the Frenchman?
This will largely depend on who you ask among the Forest fan base.

Some can't let go of the fact that he used to play for Leicester – or that he is blocking the pathway for Alex Mighten to play more frequently.

Knockaert, however, is a proven Championship performer and if the numbers are right he'd be a quality addition.

The statistics will tell you the Frenchman has two goals and one assist to his name this season.

But for some woeful finishing he'd easily have seven or eight assists, however, and his left foot is an absolute wans.

Knockaert constantly puts a shift in and with better players around him he could really thrive.

His permanent arrival would make for a strong start to the summer transfer window.

Fulham captain Cairney unlikely to return this season

Tom Cairney is set to miss the rest of the season.

For the first time, Scott Parker has admitted the odds are stacked against the Fulham captain making any kind of appearance over the final nine games of the campaign.

Cairney hasn't played since December 19 as he battles a knee injury initially picked up in a pre-season friendly.

The midfielder has been in and out of modified training ever since, but he's now set for a new course of injections recommended by a specialist.

Whites boss Parker said: "You're getting to that point in the season, you're also getting to that point with Tom where he's been out for some time now and the issue is still ongoing.

"So, of course there's that fear, definitely (that his season is over). He has managed to be able to train, come off it, train, come off it.

"But this is an ongoing issue and time is against him with nine games to go.

"This course of injections we hope speeds up the healing process. That's what a specialist has recommended we do over the next week or 10 days and then we'll build up again and see if we've made some steps forward."

Parker revealed something of the 30-year-old's frustration as he's been forced to watch his team-mates battle Premier League relegation for the second time in three seasons.

Parker explained: "He's gutted because the last time we were in this division he showed his quality but we were relegated.

"This time he got an early run of games, but again has not been able to show his quality in a division he's tried his whole life to get into."

Fulham duo set to miss international games

Fulham are looking to withdraw André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Mario Lemina from international duty next week.

The two midfielders were due to represent their countries facing sides on the government 'red list' demanding a 14-day quarantine on return to the UK because of Covid-19 resrictions.

Anguissa's Cameroon have fixtures against Cape Verde Rwanda and Cape Verde, both on the red list, while Lemina from Gabon, was due to play Angola and Congo DR.

Visiting Angola would have required the Southampton loanee to sit out vital Fulham matches against Aston Villa and Wolves.

Fulham boss Scott Parker is reluctant to weaken his squad as Fulham fight the drop.

He said: "Those players would then miss 14 days and two Premier League games.

"It's just not feasible for a club like us to be able to do that. So, they won't be playing in those countries.

"Frank Anguissa and Mario Lemina have two games (each), one of the games is fine.

"But there is one game for each of them (at least) that is in a red-list country. We will be doing all we can to make sure they don't go into them."

However, a number of Whites players will be away with their national teams. Injury and infection top the list of Parker's concerns.

"It's not ideal in the current situation, players travelling," he said.

"But at the same time, there is a big tournament and the managers that are involved at that level, in terms of managing their countries, they need that time to prepare for what are big tournaments in the summer.

"On a selfish note, from my point of view, of course it's not ideal. We've got a massive run-in now; we have had a lot of games.

"Players (will be going) all over the place and the situation we are in, the pandemic, there are a lot of rules, regulations when they come back from the countries they are going to. It's a constant fear and a worry."

Premier League survival: relegation dogfight reaches pivotal weekend

The quietest Premier League weekend of the season is set to be the loudest in the battle to avoid the drop. With Sheffield United and West Brom left needing a miracle, all interest at the bottom of the table is on the following state of affairs;

Brighton – 29 points (played 28), Newcastle – 28 points (played 28), Fulham – 26 points (played 29).

The race to avoid the final relegation place looks to all intents and purposes a three-way fight. Whoever drops through the trapdoor will almost certainly look back at this weekend in late March as a defining factor in their downfall.

Fulham host Leeds on Friday night knowing that a victory will hoist them above the cut line. Defender Ola Aina has already stated they are 'raring to go' and Scott Parker will not need to explain the importance of the game to anyone at Craven Cottage. Marcelo Bielsa's visitors have provided an abundance of entertainment this season but, thanks to their open and expansive style of play, offer the Cottagers a realistic route to three points. The Cottagers' surge in recent weeks has brought them within touching distance of their immediate rivals who, as the fixture list would have it, will face each other less than 24 hours later.

Brighton shouldn't be in a relegation scrap if performances are anything to go by. Unfortunately for them, only points count in the end. The mood at the Amex, despite a lowly league standard, is easily the most optimistic of those in immediate danger thanks to a deserved three points last time out at Southampton. Regardless of Fulham's result, a Brighton victory would see them put breathing space between themselves and danger, whilst plummeting their opponents from the North East into real peril.

Should Fulham get the job done on Friday, Newcastle will arrive at the Amex in the drop zone and without a win in five games. A late, late Jamaal Lascelles equaliser against Aston Villa last time out boosted the points tally but did little to change the mood on Tyneside. Should, as is certainly possible, Newcastle end Saturday in the unwanted 18th position, pressure on Steve Bruce will intensify to new levels.

From a neutral's perspective, the importance of these two clashes between bottom half clubs adds an element of intrigue to a Premier League weekend lacking in action. For players and supporters of those involved the situation is far more serious. For Brighton, a mouthwatering opportunity awaits to surge clear of trouble. For Fulham and Newcastle, defeat feels as if it would bring more damaging consequences.

On the final day of the 20/21 season, Fulham will host Newcastle at Craven Cottage. The results of this coming weekend will have an enormous say on whether relegation will ride on the result.

Preview: Fulham vs Leeds United

A look ahead to Friday night's clash.

Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United side travel to London on Friday evening to take on Fulham, in the Premier League (8pm).

A thrilling encounter in September saw the Whites defeat the Cottagers 4-3 at Elland Road, in a pulsating match which marked the club's return to Premier League football on home turf.

Since that match, the two teams have had different campaigns to one another. Friday's clash will give Fulham the opportunity to move out of the relegation places with a win, having spent much of the season so far in the danger zone.

Leeds will be looking to add another three points to their tally and regain ground on the top half, with Arsenal currently occupying 10th spot and having a four point lead over Bielsa's side.

Scott Parker's side have shown a resurgence since the turn of the year. Having struggled to adapt to life back in the Premier League following their promotion - alongside the Whites - last season from the Championship, they have now caught up to the teams above them.

Just three losses in their last 11 matches has contributed to a rise in recent points, which has seen Parker's side give themselves a real chance of remaining in the division. Three points on Friday would take them above Newcastle United into 17th, and level on points with 16th placed Brighton.

Last time out against Chelsea was only the third time this season Leeds have drawn. All three have been at Elland Road, with only wins and losses coming away. The trip to London to face Fulham gives another chance to secure a victory in the capital for the first time since December 2017.

The goalless draw last weekend meant that Illan Meslier claimed his ninth clean sheet of the campaign. He needs just one more to become the youngest ever goalkeeper to keep 10 in a Premier League campaign.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid is the leading goalscorer for Fulham, with five. Ademola Lookman is just behind with four and the tricky winger also tops the assist charts for his side. Other threats with goals to their name are well known, in the shape of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ivan Cavaleiro.

The key battle

Aleksandar Mitrovic vs Diego Llorente

Fulham's Serbian forward is usually heavily involved in this fixture. The 26-year-old scored in his side's win the last time the two teams met at Craven Cottage, and also found the net at Elland Road in September.

His physical presence and style will give Llorente problem's and things to think about, but the Spanish international has experience and has dealt with numerous different types of forward in his career. If both selected, it will certainly be a battle to watch.

Jedi: Ready For Battle

Antonee Robinson is ready for the upcoming challenge that Leeds United present.

The Whites will take on every game looking for three points in our quest to be in the Premier League next season, Robinson added.

"It's definitely going to be a massive battle," he said. "Leeds go full force into every game, they are a very energetic team.

"I think since last time [we played them] we've had a lot of squad changes and a lot of different players have played since the first game.

"We have shored up defensively since the last game. On our end we'd be expecting to concede a lot fewer goals, and on the reverse we've got to try and score as much as possible. It's a must win for us, as is any other fixture that's coming up."

Victory for Fulham would move us out of the relegation zone, for 24 hours at least.

"There are big rewards at the end of each game," Robinson said. "We've got to start putting points together as soon as possible. We don't want to go into the last day having to battle it out.

"If it comes to that, we're more than ready, but we want to get ourselves safe as soon as possible and make sure that we're playing Premier League football next year.

"[Scott Parker] wants us to counter how [Leeds] play. They're a very high energy team, a man-marking team. We've been working all week on our tactics to try and exploit that and take advantage of the way they play.

"They've been a pretty exciting team to watch. They sort of live by the sword, die by the sword, either win or lose, pretty much every game they've been involved in.

"They keep their style of play the same throughout. It's the same style they used to play in the Championship and they've had a lot of success with it as well but we haven't gone into any game fearing an opponent and this certainly won't be any different."

Robinson believes that the current run of results and the form the Whites have been in will hopefully give fruitful results.

"It's been massive," he stated. "You look at where we were a few weeks ago, we were 10 points adrift and now we're right there, you can feel how close we are to safety.

"The message from the Gaffer all season has been that if we keep playing the way we have been, our rewards will come. He truly believed that we can't stay down there, the way we're playing, it's got to turn for us at some point. It seems to have turned for us recently so we've got to keep that up.

"We're definitely on the upside of momentum and I feel like we're one of the in-form teams at the moment, with some of the results we've had, and we're trying to capitalise now.

"We've had Tottenham, Liverpool and City, a massive three games now out of the way, and with the fixtures coming up, we're looking at them as if we can win all of them."

Fulham fixture to support No Room For Racism campaign

In line with International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Leeds United's Premier League fixture against Fulham Football Club on Friday evening will support the ongoing No Room For Racism (NRFR) campaign in line with International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The World Day to Eliminate Racial Discrimination is an annual event that takes place on 21st March every year. Taking place this Sunday, the international awareness day is held by the United Nations with the aim of putting a stop to people being discriminated against because of their race.

Our fixture against Fulham in London this evening will continue to support the messaging around the No Room For Racism campaign, which was launched by the Premier League at the start of the 2020/21 season. There will also be a number of promotional No Room For Racism assets at Craven Cottage, including a branded NRFR ball plinth and handshake board.

Leeds United have worked closely with the Premier League throughout the current campaign to support the initiative, including Kalvin Phillips taking part in a special campaign video and Tyler Roberts helping to produce educational materials as part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme.

For more information on the No Room For Racism campaign and the Action Plan Commitments drafted by the Premier League, which include the following six commitments to; Executive Pathways, Coaching Pathways, Player Pathways, Supporting Communities, Action Against Racism and Embedding Equality, please click here.

Bamford likely to play through pain barrier in Leeds clash v Fulham tonight

Patrick Bamford is likely to play through the pain barrier when Leeds United take on Fulham at Craven Cottage tonight (Friday), according to Graham Smyth.

Writing on the Yorkshire Evening Post website, the journalist claimed that Bamford's England snub could be viewed as beneficial for the striker and for Leeds due to the injury he suffered playing Chelsea last week.

As quoted by Leeds Live, Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed Bamford has a knock to his hip but doesn't think he'll miss the game at Craven Cottage.

Unlikely to play full 90

Bamford has been in superb form for Leeds this term, scoring 13 goals so far in his first season back in the Premier League.

Only Mohamed Salah, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Kane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have outscored the Leeds United star in the Premier League this season.

He was always going to be in the running for the England squad but has been pipped to the post by Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins.

He's also had a good season, to be fair, and isn't carrying a knock like Bamford is.

Although there was a lot of anger from Leeds fans over Bamford's snub, we have to view this as a potential blessing in disguise because he'll have a couple of weeks off to rest and recuperate after Friday's clash with Fulham.

He's unlikely to get a full 90 minutes under his belt at Craven Cottage.

Rodrigo might come off the bench in the second half at some point, possibly around the hour-mark, to replace Bamford, who simply cannot get injured.

Rodrigo's the club's most expensive signing as is more naturally a striker than a midfielder. It would be good to see him get some game-time there but we'd rather see Bamford spearheading the attack after what we've seen from him this season.

Leeds Matchday Preview
Fulham v Leeds United | Friday 19th March 2021 | 8pm | Craven Cottage | #FULLEE

The opposition

Leeds have actually lost more Premier League games than Fulham this season; 14 to our 13. They have, though, won more matches (11) than any other side in the bottom half of the table.
United's fixtures tend to end in a loss or win, with only Sheffield United drawing fewer matches than Leeds' three in the 2020/21 campaign. Their most recent outing was one of those, though, with their clash with Chelsea ending goalless.
There was paper talk of United having three players in the England squad next week, but it's just Kalvin Phillips joining up with the Three Lions after Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling missed out. Gareth Southgate did, though, acknowledge that Bamford was very close to making the cut.

Fulham team news

Tom Cairney's knee continues to keep him out, while Bobby De Cordova-Reid is also struggling with a knock.

Leeds team news

Patrick Bamford was withdrawn from the Chelsea stalemate after just 35 minutes with a hip injury, but the striker is expected to have shaken it off in time to face Fulham. Rodrigo replaced Bamford on Saturday but is now a doubt having picked up a muscle injury in training this week. Club captain Liam Cooper remains out through illness, while Leif Davis is also absent.

Virtual mascots

Chloe, Ben and Jake will be supporting the boys from home for the Leeds fixture.

Coverage

The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, while commentary from Gentleman Jim and Jamie Reid is available for FFCtv subscribers.

Player insight

Frank Anguissa knows what to expect from a Marcelo Bielsa side, have briefly played under the Argentine at Marseille.

"When I arrived, I found a coach who was intent on pressing, individual marking of players, a lot of intensity in matches, also in training," Anguissa told FFCtv.

"He was a coach who always wanted to see his player give their all to play as they train. That's what I noticed and learnt from him.

"He's someone who brings a lot of intensity in the game. It's something that we'll try to deal with.

"He's a good coach, with good ideas, and we'll need to respect our gameplan and do everything to win.

"He's done a good job at Leeds, a team that was promoted a year ago and has had a good season with him since the Championship, a team to take seriously which will be very difficult to beat.

"But I'm confident in our team, with the attributes and qualities we have which we'll try to show."

Form

Fulham: WDLWL

Leeds: LWLLD

Harford spotted Adebayo at Fulham U23s although admits signing was a joint decision
Town number two on recruitment of Walsall striker on deadline day

Luton assistant manager Mick Harford revealed that new signing Elijah Adebayo first caught his eye when playing for Fulham U23s earlier in his career, but didn't want to take all the credit for his recent addition to the Hatters ranks.

The 23-year-old started out at Craven Cottage, scoring 13 goals in 37 games with nine assists for the U23s, but didn't ever get his first team shot with the Cottagers.

He had loan spells at Swindon Town and Stevenage, then joining Walsall on a permanent basis in June 2019, netting 18 in 65 for the Saddlers, before a switch to Kenilworth Road for an undisclosed fee on transfer deadline day last month.

When asked how the signing came about, Harford, who had been the club's head of recruitment until Nathan Jones' return as manager saw him named number two, said: "I saw him a few years ago playing for Fulham U23s and he went off to Swindon.

"I wouldn't say I'd earmarked him down, he was a young kid then and was 18, 19 years old, so fair play to him, he went to Walsall and did fantastically well there.

"He was just flagged up and we all made an agreement to sign him.

"I wouldn't say it was anyone specifically who said 'we've got to sign him, we've got to go and get him'.

"He was just flagged up and we all agreed it would be a good asset for the football club.

"In terms of him being on the pitch, he's very effective at what he does and he's doing well for us at the moment and long may it continue."

Adebayo has certainly proved another feather in the cap for Town's recruitment policy, with three goals in his opening eight appearances after displacing top scorer James Collins in the side.

The attacker mentioned Harford when signing and how he wanted to work with the Luton legend, who notched 92 times in 217 matches himself for the Hatters, winning two England caps as well in his time at Kenilworth Road, about becoming more of an aerial threat in the opposition penalty area.

On the help he has given Luton's new-boy, the 62-year-old continued: "We speak, it's hard for me to get on to the training ground and clip balls for him, but I'll get the other players to do bits and pieces.

"As a group we've all tried to help him, myself, Paul (Hart), Chris (Cohen) and Nathan, we've all tried to help the boy, tried to give him advice.

"He's come in, done fantastic, he's a big threat, he's been a big presence for us over the games he's played and we're absolutely thrilled with him.

"Have I had a big influence on him? I try to speak with him on a daily basis and just basically gave him tips, as all of the coaching staff do, so everyone's making contributions and just hoping he continues to improve.

"One thing is he's got the right attitude, wants to learn, is a real good kid, very diligent and he wants to get better, so that's a massive bonus for us."

When asked for specifics that Adebyao could add to make his game even better, Harford said: "In any walk of life you can always keep improving on a daily basis, he wants to get better, he wants to learn to get himself in good positions.

"This morning (Thursday) he wanted to do a little bit of work in terms of attacking play and we did it with a couple of midfield players helping him out, so he'll keep improving.

"The biggest thing is he wants to improve, so he's got a chance.

"His technique is very, very good, touch is good, he holds the ball up well, links play up well, he's come in and he's been a breath of fresh air.

"It's not just all about being technically good, it's about being in the right position, occupying back fours, pulling in between centre halves and full backs, so two players have got to mark you or keep an eye on you.

"It opens things up for other players, like the goal at Nottingham Forest, that Tunni's (Ryan Tunnicliffe) got, he's pulled away at the back post, he's made a run in the middle and scored the goal, so it's just basic little things like that which you learn from experience."

With Harford's latest role at the club, Town bolstered their recruitment department last month, announcing former Stoke City and Norwich City head of first-team recruitment Phil Chapple had joined as head of scouting operations, with Jay Socik becoming head of recruitment analysis.

The Hatters legend was just happy to do his bit wherever asked by the club, adding: "I'll still have my foot in the recruitment camp, which I want to, that's what I was brought into the football club to do when I came back with Nathan all those years ago.

"That's the bread and butter, but what Nathan asks me to do I'll do and I'll try to help everyone as much as I can.

"We brought Chappy and Jay in, Jay as data analyst and Chappy will help with the recruitment and the scouting, so I'll just have a foot in both camps really in terms of trying to help and assist everyone."

Fulham v Leeds – Preview

Leeds United travel to Craven Cottage on Friday evening where they will face Fulham in an 8pm kick off live on Sky Sports Main Event.

The Whites played out a 0-0 draw against Chelsea at Elland Road last Saturday afternoon to bag a well-deserved point.

Patrick Bamford is expected to be fit for Friday evening despite suffering a hip injury which forced him off inside the first half on Saturday.

Captain Liam Cooper will miss out through illness, while Leif Davis has a small issue and is also not expected to feature for the Whites.

It is unknown whether Rodrigo Moreno will be available for selection after picking up a muscle injury during training on Tuesday.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday afternoon, head coach Marcelo Bielsa gave his thoughts on Fulham ahead of Friday evening's game.

He said: "The idea of the manager is reflected in Fulham's play."

"In the first round it was difficult for them to impose their style and in the second round of fixtures they started to do this a lot better."

"I remember the style when we faced them in the Championship and it's the same style, but they've managed to impose it in a lot of games in the Premier League."

Following his call up to the Spanish international squad earlier in the week, defender Diego Llorente gave his thoughts ahead of the game.

He said: "I expect that they [Fulham] will give more than 100%."

"When you are down there at the bottom and are nearing the end of the season, every game is a final, I have been there before a few times."

"We know we will be up against a side that will make things tough for us and it will be hard to get the three points. We will need to work very hard."

Fulham currently sit inside the relegation zone in 18th place and suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester City last Saturday.

Midfielder and club captain Tom Cairney will not feature for the Cottagers as he continues to recover from an ongoing knee injury.

Head coach Scott Parker believes that his team are a different side now to the one that fell to defeat at Elland Road back in September.

Speaking during his press conference earlier in the week, he gave his thoughts on the Whites ahead of Friday evening's clash.

He said: "They're [Leeds] a very, very good side. A unique side, in the way they play and set up."

"It's quite unique, you don't come across it a lot. Certainly not in this division, we've experienced it a couple of times last year with Leeds."

"The intensity with which Leeds play is always one that you need to match. We were in the same league last year and we've played them this year, so we understand fully what Leeds bring, their energy and intensity."

"As always, we're looking forward to the game. It a good game, a big game, and we're raring to go."

Leeds were victorious last time both teams met back in September, where the Whites won 4-3 at Elland Road, thanks to goals from Helder Costa (2), Mateusz Klich and Patrick Bamford.

If Leeds can keep a clean sheet on Friday evening, Illan Meslier will become the youngest goalkeeper to record 10 clean sheets in a single Premier League season.

The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event with kick off at 8pm.

A result at Fulham will move under-23s into third place

Back in November, with just one win from the first six games of the season, the under-23s beat Fulham 2-1 with goals from Max Thompson and Joel Mumbongo to lift us off the bottom of the league.

Albeit having played more games than all but leaders Leeds, we go to Fulham in fifth place knowing that a win or even a draw will temporarily move us into third place in a league where the winners will gain automatic promotion with the next four taking part in the end of season play-offs.

Looking back to that win against Fulham, it was probably the strongest team we'd turned out at that stage of the season. Richard Nartey (pictured) played ahead of him signing on the following day. He partnered Bobby Thomas, currently on loan at Barrow, in the centre of defence. More experienced players were involved such as Anthony Glennon and Josh Benson and it's been like that, more or less, since which has helped build the momentum with us now having won a further six games.

Coach Steve Stone admitted: "We struggled for the first four or five games while we came to terms with the bodies that we had with Covid. The team was probably too young at the time. We've added some strength in depth in Richard Nartey, and Anthony Glennon has played a lot this season."

Fulham are currently tenth but just five points behind us with a game in hand. They've been beaten in each of their last two games but by Wolves and Stoke, two of the teams above us. Their last win was on 19th February when they beat Sunderland 2-0 at the London School of Economics. Both goals were scored by Fabio Carvalho who is currently the division's joint leading goalscorer, alongside Aston Villa's Louie Barry, with ten goals.

This afternoon's game kicks off at 1 p.m. at the London School of Economics.

Leeds United handed major injury boost over Patrick Bamford ahead of Fulham

Leeds United have been handed a major injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash against Fulham on Friday night, with news that Patrick Bamford is likely to be fit.

The striker was forced off in Marcelo Bielsa's side's last game against Chelsea at Elland Road, and there no doubt would have been some serious concern about whether he would be fit to face the Cottagers.

Bamford has played an integral role in Leeds' impressive return to the Premier League this season, bagging 13 goals and providing a further six assists in the top-flight alone – in fact, he's played the full 90 minutes in all but six of the Whites' games this campaign in the league, and has started every single one.

Ahead of the game tonight, The Athletic's Phil Hay delivered a crucial update on Bamford's fitness, saying that the forward looks like he should be available, and that despite a knock to his hip, stands a "good chance of recovering".

The £16.2m-rated man has earned some rave reviews this season for his performances, not least from former Premier League ace Gabriel Agbonlahor, who lauded his display against Leicester just last month.

He said: "What's surprised me is how good his finishing is. He's never going to get that ball and dribble past players but what he does have is a great finish on him.

"He showed with his goal at the weekend how clinical he can be. His link-up play as well. Yes, I've been surprised but credit to him."

Bamford's availability for tonight will come as a major relief for Bielsa, and will have the Leeds boss absolutely buzzing that he can continue to rely upon on his main man up top.

The tactical battle facing Leeds United as Marcelo Bielsa prepares for Scott Parker's Fulham
In the latest of a series for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Jon Mackenzie - from All Stats Aren't We - takes a deeper look at Leeds United's next opponents - Fulham.

It's been a season of two halves for Fulham.

At the midway point of the campaign, Scott Parker's team had amassed a mere 13 points.

Ten games later, they've doubled that haul with unlikely wins against Everton and Liverpool putting them on the cusp of escaping the relegation zone. There is still a long way to go for Fulham, though, and their run-in from here is hardly enviable.

They'll be welcoming Leeds to Craven Cottage with an eye to picking up points if they can.

Here are three aspects of Parker's system to look out for tonight:

A different team:

When Leeds hosted Fulham at Elland Road in their second Premier League fixture since promotion, eight of the players who started for Fulham had played for them in the Championship.

Last week, against Manchester City, only two of the players on the pitch in a Fulham shirt had played for them in the Championship.

In the course of six months, Fulham have completely rebuilt their Championship side.

No doubt this goes a long way towards explaining their recent turn in form.

Leeds will be facing a different challenge to the ones they've seen in their more recent matches against Fulham.

What structure?

Over the course of the last 10 games in the Premier League, Scott Parker has used five different formations.

Predominantly, this is because Parker likes to have his team pressing high and so he adjusts his formation accordingly.

But he also has a depth of squad that allows him to be able to rotate quite widely too.

With their almost total man-marking approach, Leeds like to respond to an opponent's structure. But Parker isn't making it easy for Marcelo Bielsa.

Expect to see a little bit of tweaking tonight if Bielsa doesn't anticipate Parker.

High press:

We've seen that Leeds can be quite vulnerable to a high press this season.

Fulham themselves caused Leeds a lot of problems in the first half in last season's fixture at Elland Road.

Against Southampton, Leeds overcame the high press by simply playing over it.

Don't be surprised if the same tactic is employed tonight.

Leeds United heading to third-bottom Fulham as 'underdogs' with Cottagers predicted to stay up
FULHAM are marginal favourites to condemn Leeds United to more misery in London in tonight's Premier League clash at Craven Cottage (kick-off 8pm).

Scott Parker's third-bottom Cottagers are ten points and six places below the Whites who also have a game in hand yet Fulham are a best priced 31-20 to beat Marcelo Bielsa's side.

There is not much in it as Leeds are only a best priced 43-20 and freely available at 2s whereas the draw is on offer at 12-5.

United's no 9 Patrick Bamford is also joint favourite to score first at 11-2 and only 39-20 as an any time scorer.

But the next five players in the first scorer market all represent an improving Fulham side in the shape of Bobby Decordova-Reid (11-2), Josh Maja (23-4), Aleksandar Mitrovic (13-2), Ivan Cavaleiro (15-2) and Ademola Lookman (8s).

Young Whites duo Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt are both 8-1 and next, followed by injury doubt Rodrigo at 9s and then star winger Raphinha at 10s.

No goalscorer is also 10s and thereafter Pablo Hernandez is 11s and Jack Harrison 12s, before Fulham duo Fabio Carvalho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (both 12s).

United's Tyler Roberts is also 12s, the same price as Fulham's former Whites youngster Tom Cairney who is out with a knee injury.

Josh Onomah is then 13s, the same odds as United's Helder Costa, and lower down the order Ian Poveda is 14s, Mateusz Klich 16s and Stuart Dallas 20s.

Mario Lemina (22s) and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (25s) are next from a Fulham point of view whilst United duo Gjanni Alioski and Jamie Shackleton are both 25s.

A 1-1 draw is favourite in the correct score market at 33-5 and a 1-0 win for Fulham is next at 9s, just ahead of a 1-0 Whites triumph at 10s.

The bookies also think that third-bottom Fulham will stay up as Parker's side are fourth-favourites to go down at 6-4, bigger odds than Newcastle United who are evens.

West Brom (1-100) and Sheffield United (1-200) are considered already gone and Leeds are essentially seen as safe in being 250-1 for the drop.

It's seen as one of Newcastle and Fulham plus the Blades and Baggies as Brighton are 14s, Burnley 20s, Southampton 40s, Palace 100s and Wolves 275s, just bigger than Leeds.

That, though, has not changed the viewpoint of seeing Bielsa's Whites as marginal 'underdogs' at third-bottom Fulham.

'Get it done', 'Love his energy' – Many Nottingham Forest fans react as club weigh up transfer decision

Football League World understand that Fulham are open to selling Anthony Knockaert this summer, with Nottingham Forest holding an interest in the winger.

Knockaert – whose loan move from Brighton to Fulham was turned into a permanent £10million move at the end of last season – joined Forest on loan in October.

The loan deal would initially run until January with Forest including an option to make the move permanent, but as 2021 arrived, they chose to extend it until the end of the season instead.

Knockaert has been a key player for Forest this season, making 28 Championship appearances and scoring twice whilst registering one assist.

Sources have told Football League World that Fulham are open to letting Knockaert leave on a permanent basis this summer, though, with Forest interested in bringing him to the City Ground for good.

Knockaert's wages could prove to be a stumbling block, though, with Forest set to review their finances over the next couple of months before making any sort of decision.

What do the fans think, then? Knockaert is a player who frustrates at times, but is undoubtedly Forest's best creative outlet when it is his day.

Leeds: Patrick Bamford absent from training

Patrick Bamford was seemingly absent from Leeds United's pre-Fulham training session on Thursday, suggesting he could miss out against the Cottagers.

The 27-year-old has been a revelation so far this season, arguably proving to be the Whites' star man in their first year back in the Premier League.

Bamford has scored 13 goals in 28 league appearances in 2020/21, while five assists are also proof that he is more than just a goalscorer.

Unfortunately, the striker limped out of last weekend's 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea, immediately throwing his involvement against Fulham on Friday night in doubt.

Bamford absent from training footage

Although the injury has been played down, with a potential dead leg cited, MOT Leeds News report that Bamford was missing from a training video released by the club on the eve of the game.

It is worth stressing that there is no confirmation that the Englishman will miss the Fulham match through injury, but not seeing him alongside his teammates does raise suspicions.

Transfer Tavern take

Bamford has been such an integral player for Leeds this season, so having him unavailable for the trip to Craven Cottage would be a massive blow.

Not only would his potency in front of goal be a big loss, but his link-up play and work ethic, too, bringing the best out of his teammates.

Drive: Fulham vs Leeds, 7th December 2002

Terry Venables always had friends. But they weren't always useful, or easy to find in Yorkshire.

George Graham had thought he was doing Venables a favour when he told him to take the job he'd previously held and become manager of Leeds United. From outside Elland Road, it looked like the years since Graham left his former assistant David O'Leary in charge had made a big club better, but within six months, Graham was calling Venables to apologise for leading him into trouble. "I had no idea how bad things had become," he said.

After the collapse of the ITV Digital television contract, Leeds weren't the only club in trouble. Their neighbours Bradford City had just convinced their players to defer their wages until the end of the season, and were struggling with the aftermath of a mad summer when chairman Geoffrey Richmond and managing director Shaun Harvey spent millions on transfers using the same company, Registered European Football Finance, that was causing cashflow problems behind the scenes at Leeds.

The scene out front at Leeds wasn't yet reflecting that turmoil. Selling Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Keane had brought in around £40m to offset failure to qualify for the Champions League, and deputy chairman Alan Leighton could still present a plausible voice of reason when discussing the future financial health of the game. He felt that replacing enormous basic wages with performance related contracts and big cuts in case of relegation would help clubs in the future. Clubs like Bradford, that is.

As for Leeds, the PLC could see no reason why Terry Venables shouldn't have them higher up the Premier League table than 16th. Opening a new £5m building at the club's state of the art Thorp Arch Academy, chairman Peter Ridsdale said it was an example of the advantages the club was giving its playing staff.

"This is now no-excuse time because when you see the facilities the players have, there aren't any excuses," he said. "Apart from the fact they are all very well-paid individuals, they are all now very well looked after, too. If any of them is listening, on Saturday I would like three points, please. Let's get back to putting our season together."

Were any of them listening? Olivier Dacourt was talking, to France Football magazine, saying the team's slump was a "disgrace," that the squad "ought to be in the top four," that he only had a distant relationship with Venables. "I do my work conscientiously, hoping it will pay off, but it's fair to say that I'm starting to wonder," he said.

Dacourt, though, had been injured for several weeks, and Venables said injuries were the cause of most of his immediate problems. Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell and Lee Bowyer were all out for the weekend's trip to Fulham, while Danny Mills, Lucas Radebe and Michael Bridges were only just coming back to fitness, plus Robbie Fowler, after surgery on a career threatening hip injury. Venables said he'd never known a situation like it, and blamed the UEFA Cup for overstraining the players and taking away time to work on tactics.

"We have had three games in eight days nearly all the time, which doesn't give you much chance to do anything apart from say who's fit and let's go again," he said.

Fulham's toothpick chewing manager Jean Tigana was under pressure too: he had fallen out with chairman Mohamed Al Fayed, who had brought in then swiftly taken away Franco Baresi as director of football, without consulting his manager. Tigana was now hesitating over signing a new contract and Al Fayed, unhappy in 14th place, was withdrawing the offer. "It is not up to him any more, it is up to me," he said. "It is whether I still want him or not." Tigana just wanted a fit striker to face Leeds; Louis Saha, Facundo Sava and Barry Hayles were injured, Steve Marlet suspended.

Leeds had only won one of ten Premier League games since a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in September, and this felt like a chance. Loftus Road, where Fulham were playing now Craven Cottage fell short of Premier League requirements, might have been more homely surroundings for a former QPR player and manager, but Venables' problem was that a lot of people from Leeds were there too, and United were failing to perform.

Fulham had several chances to score before defender Martin Djetou rose above a static Jonathan Woodgate to head in from a corner, and that was only the tenth minute. Woodgate was believed not to be speaking to his centre-back partner Michael Duberry, after events during Woodgate and Bowyer's infamous trial, and their method for dealing with Steed Malbranque and Luis Boa Morte was to stand aside, leaving the woodwork and goalkeeper Paul Robinson to do all the work. England manager Sven Goran Eriksson was watching him, and saw plenty.

United's midfield of Eirik Bakke, Stephen McPhail, Jason Wilcox and Paul Okon — injured since signing in the summer, this was his first start — could hardly put two passes together during a first half of constant pressure from Fulham, but it was striker Alan Smith making way at half-time, for Robbie Fowler. Smith was said to be 'unwell', while Fowler was playing his second game since injury, and with him up front was Michael Bridges, starting his first game since October 2000. Leeds did cross halfway in the second half, but only the introduction on the hour of sixteen-year-old James Milner sparked them into anything like life. The net result of Leeds looking livelier going forward, though, was greater exposure at the back, and had Saha been fit for Fulham, there was no saying how many of their twenty shots might have found the net.

With Venables next to him in the directors' seats for the first fifteen minutes, Ridsdale watched in silence. After his worried manager went to the dugout, he watched with his head in his hands. Before the game, Venables had been talking about the transfer window opening in January. "I have asked about what freedom I will have to bring in new players," he said, "but I don't know what the answer is yet." Perhaps Ridsdale was trying to think of a way to tell him.

The lack of answers continued after the game. The fans had sounded certain: 'Terry, time to go' and 'Bye bye Terry' were sung from the away end in the second half. "I've no idea how long I have to put things right," Venables said, "but I'm going to keep working hard."

He sounded realistic about the chants, and the risk to his job. "I haven't seen the chairman, so I don't know what he's saying," he said. "It's not going on in someone's house. It's there for everyone to see." Someone asked, where do Leeds go from here? "To Elland Road to play Malaga on Thursday," quipped Venables.

There was more the next day, when Venables answered Olivier Dacourt, in a column in the News of The World. He accused Dacourt of using his injury as an excuse, that he'd been allowed to visit France for personal reasons but was more interested in lining up a transfer. If Dacourt wanted to know what Venables thought of him, he could knock on his door and ask him, rather than talking through the French press.

But if the conversation was to take place in the media, said Venables, "Well, I'd like to say here and now that he knows exactly what I think of him. I can't believe he has the nerve to say those things and I think he should take a long hard look at himself. If he wants to go to Italy — and if someone is interested — I will personally drive him there."

Until Dacourt took up that offer, and until Ridsdale advised otherwise, Venables had only one route ahead: back to work on Monday morning in the friendless north. Boxing promoter Frank Warren offered words of support elsewhere in the News of the World — "He took the Leeds job just three weeks before the start of the season and has been dogged by injuries and debts" — while Jeff Powell was more fulsome in the Daily Mail.

When did it become, "a crime to be witty, charming, amusing and an intelligent advocate"? asked Powell. "If friends, like myself, choose to speak up in his defence, then so be it." He reckoned Venables' experience of the dark side of the football business at Spurs in the 1990s gave him a resume fit for the task now facing him at Leeds, and there was some credence to the idea that he would have better ideas about what to do next than Ridsdale. But the north was a bitter place, and while Powell knew Venables wouldn't quit, Yorkshire was working against him. It was only a matter of time until, "the modern-day equivalents of the local mill-owners banish him from the doorstep of Leeds United one of these cold winter nights."

Very Speedy, Technically Gifted – Leeds United Legend Warns On Fulham Danger Man

Tony Dorigo has picked out Fulham winger Ademola Lookman as one player Leeds United should be wary of in their upcoming Premier League clash.

The Whites are on the road again in the top flight and are set to face relegation threatened Fulham at Craven Cottage tonight.

Fulham have only lost twice in their last eight league outings, finding some form, with boss Scott Parker leading the charge and Leeds legend Dorigo has given insight into who from the Cottagers squad should the Whites be extra wary of.

Leeds legend Dorigo has picked out Fulham winger Lookman as one player that the Whites need to keep an eye on as he has speed and technical ability to match.

Dorigo explained that Lookman poses a new set of challenges compared to Fulham hitman Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has had some good battles with Leeds all the way back from their Championship days.

Asked whether he is impressed with Lookman, Dorigo told LUTV: Yes, I think if you remember when he obviously was a youngster went up to Everton then had to go to the Bundesliga, he has come back and he has got quality.

"He is a good clever player, not scoring any goals, but is one we will have to watch out for, absolutely, and a different proposition to Mitrovic.

"Mitrovic against us, remember seeing him many times, he causes a few problems, he should have got sent off straight away in one of the games, absolutely ridiculous [foul on Ben White].

"But yes, this is a completely different proposition in that he is very speedy, wants to come off and turn and technically very gifted as well.

"So yes, another danger man."

Lookman, who is currently on loan from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, only arrived at Fulham after they lost 4-3 against Leeds earlier this season.

At Our Best, We Beat Fulham – Leeds United Legend Confident

Tony Dorigo is of the view that Fulham boss Scott Parker has got his team believing in themselves again, despite relegation fears, but thinks Leeds United will beat them, provided they play at their best.

Leeds earned their first win of the Premier League season against Fulham at Elland Road, coming out on top in a 4-3 thriller and they are set to play again tonight, this time at Craven Cottage.

Now in the business end of the top flight campaign, both teams have strung together contrasting runs in the league, with Leeds looking upwards at a potential spot in the top ten, while Fulham are locked in a relegation battle.

However, Leeds legend Dorigo feels Fulham boss Parker has got his side believing in themselves, and are finding form which will pose the Whites a difficult challenge in London.

The ex-Whites star issued advice to Leeds to be wary of Fulham as they have quality players in their ranks, but believes the Yorkshire giants at their best will beat the Londoners.

"They [Fulham] have got some good players so we have to be very wary", Dorigo told LUTV.

"They are clearly going in the right direction; Scott Parker has got them believing as well.

"So, it is going to be a difficult outfit to beat.

"Yes, it is as simple as that, it is not going to be easy.

"But I think us at our best beats this lot."

Leeds' striker Patrick Bamford is likely to play against Fulham despite being forced off against Chelsea in the weekend's 0-0 draw with a hip issue.

Why Scott Parker Is Emerging As One Of The Most Talented English Managers

If Parker keeps this Fulham squad in the Premier League against all the odds, it will be a magnificent achievement

"Fulham are going down. I've never been more certain about anything in my life and they need to buy two, maybe three or four defenders. I'm more certain of Fulham going down than Liverpool winning the league."

Jamie Carragher's assessment of Fulham three games into the season seems like it could come back to haunt him. Tonight, with three points against Leeds, Fulham could move out of the relegation zone and go ahead of Newcastle and level on points with Brighton. The side that was written off earlier in the season has come back fighting and Scott Parker deserves every credit for this turnaround.

We've all seen his brilliant post-match interviews with backing tracks from The Streets, but when it comes to the serious work, the Englishman has improved every aspect of this side. Fulham's defence, which was the target of Carra's abuse earlier in the season, is now reformed and despite their expected heavy defeat against champions elect Manchester City, they have now got a platform in place to pick up points with regularity. Before that loss, they'd kept three clean sheets in four games, including a win at Anfield and a must-win game at home to basement club Sheffield United.

In Alphonse Areola, Joachim Anderson and Tosin Adarabioyo, the Cottagers now have a strong spine in their back-line who know they will be playing, if fit, every single week. You simply cannot underestimate the importance of consistency and confidence to a central defensive pairing, something Fulham were severely lacking in the early months of this campaign.

Perhaps the energetic full-backs, often rotated have been the stars of the show in this Fulham back-line. Ola Aina's flexibility to play anywhere across the backline has allowed Parker to switch between a back three and a back four, while his ability to play at left-back strengthened them when Antonee Robinson was banned for three games. Kenny Tete has shown his ability as a wing-back while Robinson himself has provided both width and an attacking threat in the final third when playing in that same position on the opposite side.

Parker has managed to concoct a reasonably solid defence, something that looked an impossibility as Tony Khan tweeted his frustration in late September. Ahead of them, the ineffectiveness of last season's top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic has been replaced by the clever movement of Josh Maja, a January signing which could keep them in the top flight along with the attacking talents of Ademola Lookman.

Unlike two seasons ago, these signings have improved Fulham and that's because they have a steady, sensible figure in charge. Parker was handed a mess of a squad, packed full of big signings on large wages who were destined for the Championship. Once relegation was confirmed, he trimmed the fat of his squad and returned them to the top flight at the first time of asking, something that shouldn't be underestimated given his lack of managerial experience at the time.

This season was always going to be his biggest challenge, but as it has progressed, he and this Fulham side have improved alongside one another. He may not have the attraction or playing style of his opposite number tonight in Marcelo Bielsa, but Parker, if he keeps this squad in the Premier League against the odds this term, can assert himself as one of the most talented English managers in the country.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United: 20/03/2021 – match preview and predicted starting XIs

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Newcastle United

Date: 20/03/2021

K/O: 20:00

Venue: Amex Stadium

Referee: Anthony Taylor

TV: Sky Sports

Saturday night sees Brighton & Hove Albion take on Newcastle United in a relegation six-pointer. Fulham's return to form, coupled with Brighton's perpetual xG woes, has seen the fight for the much-dreaded 18th spot become quite a tussle, contrary to expectations that most fans had at the infancy of the season.

Steve Bruce presently is, and has been walking a tightrope for what seems like half a season now, and latest reports speculate the former Manchester United man could be shown the door should his side succumb at the hands of Graham Potter's on Saturday. Chris Wilder – who himself parted ways with Sheffield United very recently over his lack of control over ground facilities and transfers – is said to be the man Mike Ashley is most keen on signing for the Magpies' dugout.

Newcastle United never seemed to have fully recovered from the departure of Rafael Benitez in 2019, and signs of his influence and management seem to shadow over St. James' even today; Steve Bruce will be hoping for survival this season, some fresh funds and a post-COVID-19 world will help him provide the desired background to mould Newcastle to his will. For that, beating Brighton over the weekend will be essential.

The Seagulls have been the definition of unlucky (or inefficiency, depending on your take on things) this season; based purely on xG alone, Graham Potter's side should be 9th in the table, a mammoth 21 points higher than they've managed to collect in reality – the highest differential in the Premier League. A victory over Southampton in their most recent outing will no doubt have settled some of the anxiety in the camp, but they will know that the job isn't yet done by any means.

Fulham, having played a game extra, take to the pitch first over the weekend, with Leeds standing in their way and levelling with Brighton on points. We can be sure that both sides will be watching the match with bated breath, and both managers will be spurring their sides to dig deep and capture all three points, regardless of Fulham's result.

Team News

Brighton

Adam Webster has been ruled out until at least the international break with a foot injury, with Graham Potter mentioning earlier this month that "we won't see him this side of [international break]". Aaron Connolly has a cracked rib, and he too will only be back after the break.

Tariq Lamptey's hamstring hasn't responded "as well as we'd like" to initial treatments, with surgery being the fallback option; one which would rule him out for the rest of the season. Dan Burn was taken off at half-time against Southampton with a hamstring injury, and the gaffer "didn't want to take the chance" with him with such a crucial period of the season coming up.

Newcastle

Miguel Almiron is getting along "very, very nicely", and so there's hope yet that he may be ready to feature on Saturday. However, I personally feel Steve Bruce will opt against putting him into the lineup right away, and we should see the Paraguayan in action a little bit later on.

Allan Saint-Maximin should optimistically be back after the international break. Callum Wilson is working with the physios and in light training, but seems a little bit further away from a full recovery. He too should likely be back after the international break.

Predicted Starting XIs

Brighton (4-4-2): Sanchez; Veltman, White, Dunk, Zeqiri; Gross, Lallana, Bissouma, Trossard; Welbeck, Maupay

Newcastle (4-3-3): Dubravka; Krafth, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett; Willock, Shelvey, Hayden; Joelinton, Fraser, Gayle

Predicted Scoreline: Brighton 1-0 Newcastle

I believe Newcastle's injuries in attack may hamper them going forward, and expect Brighton to extend their gap over both Fulham and Newcastle with a victory on Saturday.

Mitrovic 'banging down the door' for Fulham recall

Aleksandar Mitrovic is "banging down the door" to get a first Fulham start in six games against Leeds.

The Serb striker has been limited to making appearances off the bench since the 2-0 home defeat by Leicester on February 3.

But Scott Parker insists last season's leading Championship scorer has done everything he could to get in the team from the start.

"I've seen someone who is banging down the door to get in this team," Whites boss Parker said.

"I've seen that over the last three weeks. His performances off the bench have been very, very good. He's come on, helped the team, showed his quality. His training consistently has been very good as well.

"I fully recognise that and I'm pleased where Aleks is at the moment."

Even so, loanee Josh Maja is set to be recalled to the starting line-up to face Leeds, with Parker reverting to one out-and-out forward supported from midfield and the flanks.

"Of course, a decision for me is I have two strikers now and who do I pick? Parker said.

"Aleks needs to keep maintaining where he is. If that's 15 minutes or that's a start, keep performing the way I see him at this present moment.

"The way he's performing on a daily basis in training and the way he's performing at the moment for the minutes on the pitch, he helps us 10-fold.

"It's good for me that I have two strikers that are fighting each other to get in this team and help us."

Jerome's International Recognition

Fulham loanee Jerome Opoku's excellent performances during his spell at Home Park have not gone unnoticed by his national side, Ghana.

The Black Stars made contact with the towering central defender about the possibility of joining the squad for their upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and Sao Tomé and Príncipe next week.

However, COVID-19-related challenges meant that a call-up would not be possible on this occasion, as is the case with many other Europe-based players during the pandemic.

With Ghana playing in red listed South Africa in the first of their two matches, Jerome would have been required to undergo a 10-day quarantine upon his return to the UK, and this was one of many hurdles standing between the defender and his first international cap.

Jerome said: "I am very proud. For me and my family it was a big thing, to be recognised by my country.

"It's a difficult thing, not being able to go, but I think it is for the best. I have spoken to a lot of people, family, and friends in football, and the whole COVID situation is challenging – for everyone's safety it's the right option not to travel at this time.

"I think the call-up reflects my performances, and the progress I've made at Argyle. I am grateful to the club, the manager, and everyone around the team for helping me improve my game and gain national recognition.

"I would like to thank Ghana for presenting me with the opportunity, and hopefully there will be more to come."

Argyle manager Ryan Lowe said: "Obviously, we're very proud of Jerome, getting a first international call-up is an incredible achievement.

"Unfortunately, the circumstances have stopped him going because of the COVID situation, but we just want to congratulate him for his hard work while on-loan at Argyle.

"It is obviously a bittersweet moment for him, to be recognised by his country, but he should be very proud. I'm certain he'll get the opportunity again in the near future."

Jerome has made 27 appearances in Sky Bet League One this season, netting once – the equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Portsmouth at Home Park in November.

Bruce Accepts That Newcastle's Predicament Means He Has Not Been Good Enough

Over the past month, Newcastle have been perilously perched on the edge of the drop zone within three points of falling down into it. In the week of our defeat at Chelsea last month, Newcastle enjoyed a comfortable 10 point cushion over 18th placed Fulham.

By the end of that week, that cushion was crushed to just 3 points. There's been minimal wrangling position-wise in the table since then. Newcastle did momentarily jump to 16th place and Fulham briefly cut the lead to just 1 point.

However, the battle for 17th has primarily been between the Magpies and the Cottagers over the past month. That's again the case the weekend as Newcastle have a two-point edge over Fulham, who invite Leeds to Craven Cottage this evening.

Results will once again have to go our way to avoid dropping into the bottom three by kickoff tomorrow. Though, it could be a short stint if Newcastle can find a way to pick up a win at the Amex on Saturday.

Wins have been very hard to come by for Newcastle, who haven't been dreadful over the past month, but just fail to put in performances that are good enough for three points. After going winless in nine straight league matches in late December through January, Newcastle haven't tasted victory in the last five matches.

While we are unbeaten in the last three, many see those draws as points lost rather than points gained. Those points have kept Fulham at bay for the time being, however, an opportunity to put some distance between them has passed unfulfilled.

During his press conference for Brighton this morning, Steve Bruce was again asked about his future at Newcastle United. He still sticks to his proverbial 'that decision is above me'. Though this time he did accept that he has not been good enough to keep Newcastle out of a relegation fight.

Here is some of what Bruce had to say as published in The Northern Echo:

"That decision will always be taken out of my hands. I only want what's best for the club. Over the last few months, in particular, I haven't been good enough to get the results this club demands.

"I understand the way it is. I will do my utmost to make sure this club stays in the Premier League. I will never walk away from the challenge.

"We had a horrific December and January. Over the last nine games we have started to pick up points again and now with a quarter of the season to go can we finish by winning four or five.

"There is always anxiety at Newcastle, it wouldn't be Newcastle without anxiety. We have to be positive and get the points to see off this battle ahead.

"We won a couple four or five weeks ago. But there is no disputing we had an awful ten-game stretch, they came thick and fast. In the last seven or eight weeks, we have improved, gone three unbeaten. We have to find a way to get the points we need."

'Major blow' – Exclusive: Pundit reacts to early Leeds team news ahead of clash v Fulham

We're delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he'll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson has said that it's a major blow for Leeds after Liam Cooper was ruled out of the game against Fulham through illness, thought to be Covid-related.

Leeds won't comment on Covid-related issues but Athletic journalist Phil Hay said, "Liam Cooper's still ill, our understanding is that it's Covid although the club aren't talking about that and Bielsa never comments on it either." [The Phil Hay Show podcast]

That's seen Cooper left out of the final Scotland squad ahead of the delayed Euros this summer, too.

Robinson said Leeds will have an even bigger problem if Patrick Bamford doesn't make the game tonight.

He said that with Rodrigo likely missing as well it would mean Tyler Roberts starting up top.

Bamford is expected to be fit to play but was missing from the latest Leeds training video and limped out of the Chelsea game last weekend.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, "You've got to hope that Bamford is fit.

"It highlights this age-old problem Leeds have got around two players, Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips.

"When either one of these players are out they just don't have a replacement and it's a case of square pegs in round holes.

"If Bamford does miss out it would be a huge blow to Leeds – he's as important to Leeds as Harry Kane is to Tottenham. But, just because he wasn't in training doesn't mean he's not playing.

"With Rodrigo out, it's even more of an issue. If he's not fit then you'd be looking at Tyler Roberts up top.

"As for Cooper, it's not been confirmed he's got Covid but it doesn't look like a foolproof plan to not say anything.

"If he's injured they say so. You can see through it. It's a major blow for him and for Leeds, and you hope that he recovers from it quickly."

Bamford missed out on the England squad but was in contention and that makes us think he will be fit for tonight's game.

If he is, Tyler Roberts will likely start in the number 10 position, with Rodrigo an injury doubt.

With Cooper out, Diego Llorente and Pascal Struijk will be tasked with stopping Fulham from scoring – they bagged three in a thrilling 4-3 win for Leeds in the reverse fixture.

Big win for under-23s at Fulham

The under-23s recorded a biggest ever win in Premier League two this afternoon with a 4-1 victory against Fulham at the  London School of Economics.

With the game goalless at half time, we were quickly in our stride in the second half. We took the lead seven minutes into the half and ten minutes later were 3-0 up with the game won.

Rob Harker, who returned with a goal last week after a long spell out with injury, scored from close range after being set up by Lewis Richardson. Six minutes later we doubled the lead when central defender Richard Nartey turned the ball in from a corner.

And two became three after a handball in the box by a Fulham defender, allowing the reliable Max Thompson to step up and score from the spot, just what he'd done a week ago when he scored the stoppage time winner against Aston Villa.

Fulham did pull one back through substitute Sylvester Jasper but it was our substitute Joel Mumbongo who had the final word with Richardson once again the provider.

The win has taken us up to third in the table for now although Wolves will have the opportunity to go back above us when they face Middlesbrough in three days time.

The teams were;

Fulham: Taye Ashby-Hammond, Ziyad Larkeche, Connor McAvoy, Ibane Bowat, Luciano D'Auria-Henry, Fabio Carvalho, Oliver O'Neill, Adrion Pajaziti (Sylvester Jasper 59), Tyrese Francois, Jay Stansfield, Mika Biereth (Jean-Pierre Tiehi 59). Subs not used: Alexander Borto, Luca Murphy, Sonny Hilton.

Burnley: Marc Richter, Jordan Cropper, Richard Nartey, Anthony Glennon, Matty Rain, Max Thompson, Anthony Gomez Mancini (Dara Costelloe 73), Kade Ratchford, Ne-Jai Tucker, Lewis Richardson, Rob Harker (Joel Mumbongo 66). Subs not used: Lewis Thomas, Calen Gallagher-Allison, Sam Unwin.

Fulham's forgotten £20 million man has the tools to dismantle Leeds United's London rebellion

Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored twice for Fulham this season - both goals coming in the 4-3 defeat at Elland Road in September

Scott Parker awaits to send on Aleksandar Mitrovic against Arsenal (Image: CLIVE ROSE/POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

Fulham's recent upturn in form has coincided with the routine omission of target man Aleksandar Mitrovic from Scott Parker's starting XI.

While the abrasive Serbian was prolific for the Cottagers in the Championship, the Premier League appears to be a nut the 26-year-old has seemingly always struggled to crack.

His debut campaign in England's top flight at Newcastle United ended with relegation, despite netting nine times for the doomed side.

He was tipped to score bagfuls for the Magpies in the second tier, but manager Rafael Benitez felt he could not trust the flammable Serb to lead his line without incurring too many suspensions or the attention of referees.

It's true that Mitrovic has a hot streak in him, but over the past few years since securing a £20 million move to Fulham, he has turned himself from the petulant young forward lacking focus, into a honed, refined, brick wall of a striker.

Unfortunately for him, this season has been stop-start for many reasons.

Mitrovic featured in each of Fulham's opening nine games, making seven starts, but the west Londoners notched just a single win.

Parker ditched his focal point, for a more varied tactical approach, which it took some time for his team to gel into. Now, they are functioning well as a unit, effective in both defence and attack.

Since the turn of 2021, Mitrovic has started just twice in the league, missing games for a variety of reasons, from coronavirus issues, to an Achilles' tendon problem.

He has played just over an hour of football across his last four Fulham outings - each one being from the bench.

However, with Leeds United struggling in the air, most notably at set-pieces, Parker may be tempted to call on his top-heavy centre-forward.

The Serbian international has made a career of bullying opposition defenders and it is something he appears to revel in.

Watching Diego Llorente's attempts to mark Craig Dawson at the London Stadium would have had the ex-Newcastle striker licking his lips.

Despite his woes at set-plays, Llorente did a relatively good job against West Ham United, keeping quiet Michail Antonio, another burly forward who very much enjoys riling opposition defenders.

Another crack at a difficult Premier League customer is something Llorente would surely relish, but without the often-underrated assuredness of Liam Cooper beside him, it is unclear how Leeds would fare against the hardly insignificant presence of Serbia's 36-goal man.

We Can Get Monkey Off Our Back At Fulham – Leeds United Legend

Tony Dorigo is of view that Leeds United's upcoming Premier League clash against Fulham is a great opportunity for the Whites to set their poor record in London straight.

The Yorkshire giants are yet to win a single game in the capital under Marcelo Bielsa, but will have an opportunity to set it right tonight.

Leeds are set to lock horns with relegation threatened Fulham at Craven Cottage in the top flight and Whites legend Dorigo has urged them to give their best to register a first win in the capital since December 2017.

Dorigo feels the Fulham clash is a great opportunity for Leeds to get the monkey off their back and put any doubts regarding their inability to win in London to bed once and for all.

The ex-defender explained that Leeds has good spells against West Ham United when they played in London earlier in the season which now they need to reproduce for the 90 minutes against Fulham to get over the line.

"It is an another very good opportunity to sort this [record in London] out and get the monkey off our back for once and for all", Dorigo told LUTV.

"It does not make any sense; I keep saying it does not make any sense at all.

"And if you look at the last time, I look at the performance in London against West Ham, I thought for one hour we were really, really, really good.

"So, let us stretch that out to 90 [minutes] and we get the job done."

Leeds are winless in their last three top flight outings and will be desperate to get back in the win column tonight while Fulham will be determined to add a huge three points to their bid for survival in the top flight.

Les Ferdinand sends Newcastle United urgent message amid relegation battle

Steve Bruce's Newcastle side are just two points clear of the drop zone going into a crucial 24 hours in their Premier League season

Les Ferdinand has urged the Newcastle United players to treat every single one of their remaining matches this season as if it was a "cup final" as they battle to preserve their Premier League status.

Newcastle are locked in a relegation battle going into their final 10 games of the 2020-21 campaign.

Steve Bruce 's side are languishing in 17th place in the table, with 28 points from their 28 fixtures so far.

They are only two points ahead of third-from-bottom Fulham, albeit with a game in hand.

Fulham take on Leeds United at Craven Cottage this evening (Friday, 8pm kick-off), and victory for Scott Parker's side would put Newcastle into the drop zone.

The Magpies, meanwhile, have a crucial match of their own on Saturday (8pm kick-off) as they take on fellow strugglers Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton are just one place and one point ahead of Newcastle as things stand.

Former Newcastle ace Ferdinand told the Premier League : "They've got 10 games - and they're 10 cup finals, because that's what it's going to need now.

"It's going to need every single one of those games to be played like a cup final, to keep themselves in the division."

Asked if Newcastle would survive, former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood said: "I think it will be determined on what they do, Brighton and Fulham.

At the moment, positive vibes certainly from Fulham. Brighton need to start scoring a lot more goals - or a few goals would help.

"The big game is the next one - Newcastle v Brighton. What a fixture. Six-pointer. Loads could be changing on that one.

"That could balance it, that one."

Plymouth Argyle defender Jerome Opoku 'proud' to get Ghana international recognition

However, Covid-related challenges have meant a first Ghana call up for Opoku has not been possible this time

Jerome Opoku has spoken of his pride at being invited to join up with the Ghana international squad for the first time.

The on-loan Plymouth Argyle defender will not, however, be taking up the opportunity on this occasion.

That is due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic and the issues surrounding international travel at the moment.

Opoku was born in Lambeth, south-east London, but is of Ghanian descent.

After playing regularly for Argyle this season on loan from Premier League club Fulham, he was contacted about the possibility of a first call-up for Ghana.

They are playing their final two qualifiers for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations later this month.

Ghana will be away to South Africa in Johannesburg on Tuesday, March 25 before hosting Sao Tome and Principe in Accra four days later.

Had Opoku taken up the chance to join up with the Ghana squad for the game in South Africa he would have had to quarantine for 10 days on his return to the UK.

That was one of the issues which were taken into consideration before it was decided Opoku would not make the trip.

Opoku told Argyle's official club website: "I am very proud. For me and my family it was a big thing, to be recognised by my country.

"It's a difficult thing, not being able to go, but I think it is for the best.

"I have spoken to a lot of people, family, and friends in football, and the whole Covid situation is challenging. For everyone's safety it's the right option not to travel at this time.

"I think the call-up reflects my performances, and the progress I have made at Argyle.

"I am grateful to the club, the manager, and everyone around the team for helping me improve my game and gain national recognition.

"I would like to thank Ghana for presenting me with the opportunity, and hopefully there will be more to come."

Opoku has made 27 starts and five substitute appearances for Argyle since arriving on loan from Fulham in September.

Manager Ryan Lowe said: "Obviously, we are very proud of Jerome, getting a first international call-up is an incredible achievement.

"Unfortunately, the circumstances have stopped him going because of the Covid situation, but we just want to congratulate him for his hard work while on loan at Argyle.

"It is obviously a bittersweet moment for him, to be recognised by his country, but he should be very proud. I'm certain he'll get the opportunity again in the near future."

Ghana are top of Group C in qualifying for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, the finals of which have been delayed until January 2022 due to Covid-19.

They are level on points with South Africa, with both of those countries set to secure the two qualification places.

Ghana coach CK Akonnor has named a squad of 29 players for the games against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.

It includes one player from an English club, Colchester United midfielder Kwame Poku.

Match Preview: Fulham vs Leeds United

Leeds travel to London for the last time this season and go there hoping Fulham's Craven Cottage is the place they get their first win since 2017 when the beat QPR 3-1 with all three goals from Kemar Roofe.

Last weekends 0-0 draw brought back a little confidence to the fans who were a little concerned with Fulham's upturn in form meaning the sizable lead from third from bottom is decreasing. The gap is still ten points but a win for the hosts will bring it down to seven with Leeds facing Manchester City A, Liverpool and manu at home in a tough looking April after the international break.

Marcelo Bielsa will have Robin Koch back in the squad that travels to London but they will be without captain Liam Cooper and Rodrigo, both are out with illness(Cooper)and injury.

It is expected that Patrick Bamford will recover from a hip injury that forced him off against Chelsea. Pascal Struijk and Diego Llorente are expected to keep their partnership in centre of the defence. Either Helder Costa or Jack Harrison will play on the wing.

Fulham have won at Everton and Liverpool and have dragged Brighton and Newcastle United into the relegation scramble after some impressive recent results. That saying they have lost their last two home games to Manchester City and Spurs.

Earlier in the season Leeds won a thriller at Elland Road 4-3. It was their first game back in the Premier League for sixteen years at Elland Road. Costa(2), Klich and Bamford were United's scorers back in September.

With Fulham needing the points to get to safety it could be a very close game with the odd goal the margin of victory. Heart always says Leeds and I think they will finally get a win in London. Leeds 2-1.
