Five Newcastle players who deserve a chance in the final game of the season vs Fulham

Just 90 minute separate Newcastle United and the end of the season.

It's been a tough campaign, but one that has ended in Premier League survival. While that is no achievement, relegation was a very real threat just eight games ago.

But a strong run of results have moved Newcastle away from danger, and up to the dizzy heights of 15th.

The Magpies have the chance to reach 45 points, which would equal their best tally since returning to the top flight.

If Newcastle beat Fulham on the final day and results go our way, we could end the season in 12th.

But will Steve Bruce rotate for the trip to Craven Cottage?

While the result is important, it seems likely that he will rotate his side after picking up multiple knocks against Sheffield United.

With that in mind, here are five players who deserve a chance against Fulham on Sunday.

Mark Gillespie

Martin Dubravka was one of multiple Newcastle players struggling against Sheffield United.

The goalkeeper appeared to pick up a muscle problem, but carried on.

However, with the Euros on the horizon for the Slovakian, he deserves a rest.

In his place should be Mark Gillespie. The summer signing has never played in the Premier League, and a top flight debut would no doubt mean a lot to the local lad.

Jamal Lewis

Jamal Lewis has fallen out of favour in recent months.

It's been a tough first season for the £15million man. However, with nothing but pride to play for, he should get a chance against Fulham.

While Matt Ritchie has been excellent, this game is a good opportunity for Lewis to regain some confidence down the left.

Matty Longstaff

Matty Longstaff hasn't played enough football this season. It's as simple as that.

Despite impressing last year and signing a new contract, he's barely featured.

The youngest Longstaff brother could have a bright future at St James' Park. However, he won't achieve his potential if he isn't given a chance to shine.

Elliot Anderson

Toon fans have been begging for Elliot Anderson to get a chance for a long time now.

He made his Premier League debut against Arsenal back in January, but hasn't featured since.

Bruce has stated that Anderson is desperate to feature. Here's hoping that happens against Fulham.

Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll should get one final start for Newcastle United.

Sure, he's got nothing to prove. The Magpies have nothing to gain either. But it would be great to see Andy Carroll leading the line one last time.

His return to Newcastle hasn't gone to plan, but it would be nice for the 32-year-old to go out on a high.

West Ham United and Fulham lead Everton and Brighton in race to sign in-demand EFL forward

West Ham United and Fulham are believed to be leading the race to sign Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong according to a report from The Sun.

It had previously been claimed that both Brighton and Hove Albion and Everton are also keen on reaching an agreement with the former Newcastle United forward this summer.

But The Sun claim that both the Hammers and Cottagers are leading the race to land his signature now, ahead of what will be an interesting summer transfer window at Ewood Park for Armstrong.

The 24-year-old caught the eye with a number of strong performances for Tony Mowbray's side, as they finished 15th in the Championship table after some inconsistent results in the second-half of this year's league campaign.

Armstrong made 43 appearances for Rovers in the 2020/21 season, and chipped in with 29 goals and five assists in a hugely impressive year with the Lancashire-based side.

Blackburn were reportedly trying to tie him down to a new contract, but no progress has been made with those talks as of yet, as they head towards the summer transfer window.

A move to West Ham could tempt Armstrong as well, with the Hammers currently sat sixth in the Premier League table with one match remaining in this year's campaign.

Whilst Fulham will be preparing for life back in the Championship, after they were relegated from the top-flight under the management of Scott Parker.

The Verdict:

I think Blackburn will know that they're facing a losing battle to keep him at Ewood Park this summer.

Armstrong has really impressed me this season with the Lancashire-based side, and I think he's more than capable of making the step up to the Premier League ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

You would imagine that a move to West Ham could really tempt him as well, as the Hammers could potentially be playing European football next season under the management of David Moyes.

He'll face a tough decision over his future though, with recently-relegated Fulham also weighing up a move for Armstrong, as the Cottagers aim to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking next term.

Roy Hodgson: Why his unique achievements in football may never be equalled

Roy Hodgson departs Crystal Palace at the end of the season, and may possibly retire - his career has been remarkable

It feels a cruel trick of the fixture list. A final-day meeting of Liverpool and Crystal Palace means Roy Hodgson finishes at the club where he arguably fared worst, in front of the fans whose dislike of him has been voiced long after his ill-fated spell on Merseyside was curtailed.

But as an epic career of 45 years and 21 jobs in eight countries may be ending, Crystal Palace's departing manager does not deserve to be defined by the disappointments, by Liverpool and England, by reigns that ended with defeats to Blackpool and Iceland.

Because no one ever had a career quite like Hodgson's before, and perhaps no one will again. He started managing in his 20s and he is still going in his 70s. The Premier League's oldest ever manager first took charge of Halmstads when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister, Gerard Ford was President and Derby County were England's reigning champions. It was before the first punk rock records and the formation of the Apple Computer Company. It was during both the Cold War and the Cod War (Iceland, victors of the latter, was to be the only Scandinavian country where Hodgson didn't go on to manage).

It was a different world. And throughout it, he has been the same Roy Hodgson, his Roy Hodgsonness perhaps blinding us to his achievements. He has been the constant and the chameleon, forever devoted to a back four wherever he has been. He famously has a hinterland, but had the motivation to carry on going at an age when, as interviews with his Premier League peers indicate, they have no intention of coaching.

Hodgson's peers were Howard Kendall and George Graham, not Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, let alone Ryan Mason; he was older than 19 previous Palace managers – 22 if you include caretakers – and his first game in management was closer in time to the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge than the current day. Longevity can be an achievement in itself, particularly in a fast-changing, demanding industry, and few have ever lasted longer.

He has other feats, ones that would be impressive individually but when combined amount to a remarkable body of work. Hodgson has been the greatest manager of clubs as different as Halmstads and Fulham. Perhaps no manager will ever win seven Allsvenskan titles again. Perhaps no Malmo manager will ever beat Inter Milan again. Perhaps no one else will ever coach Fulham to a European final. Perhaps no one else will take Switzerland to third in the world rankings; nor, in an age when more spots in major tournaments are available, end Switzerland's 28-year exile from the biggest stages.

When Serie A was the world's most glamorous league and Inter among its most prestigious clubs, they appointed a former PE teacher with no record of success in his home country. It was a credibility-defying rise from obscurity. Hodgson's journey, via Sweden and Switzerland, made him a one-man antidote to English insularity.

His eventual homecoming was heart-warming. For the best part of a decade, it felt as though his sacking by Blackburn had ended his time in England. He was destined to be an export, sometimes a forgotten one. Recognition in his homeland came late and if his fortunes with Liverpool and England suggested that Hodgson was at his best organising relatively limited players rather than liberating more gifted individuals, perhaps others took inspiration and went further: he was an influence on managers as different as Sven-Goran Eriksson and Klopp.

But the multilingual Hodgson's methods translated well to a certain level of club. He showed a timeless consistency. He had nine seasons in charge of Fulham, West Brom and Palace and kept each up; the first with a great escape and the last eight times comfortably. A decade before Juventus plotted to create a Super League, their 4-1 defeat at Craven Cottage showed why it was a repulsive idea. Hodgson was the pragmatist who allowed Fulham to dream.

Over 45 years, he was the moderniser who became a throwback, yet somehow without losing his effectiveness. Now Hodgson has not confirmed if he will head off into retirement. It may be fitting if he does; to end with Palace will mean he has come full circle, the globetrotter who finished at his local club.

Hodgson watched Palace in the old fourth division and, six decades later, managed them in the Premier League. The route the Croydon bus driver's son took in between is a reason why he is forever a unique footballing life.

Is Bobby De Cordova-Reid a victim of his versatility?
Dan Cooke questions whether Bobby De Cordova-Reid's talents are being wasted.

When we signed Bobby back in August 2019, initially on loan, I thought it was a very smart move. Two years earlier, he had managed 19 goals for Bristol City in the Championship. His season in the top flight with Cardiff wasn't as successful as he and others perhaps anticipated, but he still ended up as Cardiff's equal top scorer.

His willingness to jump ship to the Whites after we were relegated with Cardiff was apparently due to him not enjoying the Bluebirds' brand of football. This already made him a favourite in my books – no one truly likes Warnock-ball. Two years into his stay, and I think the Jamaican international has steadily improved and he has become a key member of this squad.

This season, Bobby has played pretty much everywhere, and was a revelation at wing-back during our mid-season resurgence. His ability to produce capable performances wherever he's played, has meant he's been used to plug gaps. It's for this reason that I feel that Bobby De Cordova-Reid has been both under-appreciated and misused by Parker. Scott knows he can rely on him to 'do a job', but seems to have forgotten why we signed him in the first place.

It's well documented that Bobby is our top goalscorer this season, reaching the dizzy heights of five goals. It's pretty impressive when you consider his lack of game time in advanced positions. To put this in perspective, our four main attacking options this season (Loftus-Cheek, Lookman, Cavaleiro and Mitrović) have scored a combined 11 goals.

Attacking intelligence
For me, his most impressive attribute is his positional intelligence. This explains why he's adapted so well to whichever position he's asked to play in. However, by forcing him to play deeper, you lose that intelligence in the final third. While he has it in his locker, he's not a winger who will terrorise full-backs by taking them on. Nor is he an out-and-out striker who will lead the line. Instead his offensive game centres around picking up smart positions, finding space in between defensive lines.

Four of his goals this season have seen him sneak in between the opposition left-back and centre-back. He sniffs out space, it's something Cavaleiro isn't as good at, and something Loftus-Cheek is meant to be good at, but we all know he's been a colossal failure.

This is where I think Bobby is under-appreciated by Parker. There's no doubt Scott is a big fan of him, however for one reason or another, he has favoured Cavaleiro and Loftus-Cheek in positions where I think De Cordova-Reid may have been a better option.

The above graphs might not initially be that impressive, but what they show me is a player who possesses a considerable attacking threat. Bearing in mind that roughly a third of his starts have been as part of a back five, to rank where he does statistically, shows his qualities. He has an ability to find pockets of space in and around the area and that's something we've needed all season.

If you look at a Bobby De Cordova-Reid highlights reel, you're not going to see bags of 30-yard screamers, or individual wonder goals (barring when he turned into prime Maradona against Huddersfield), what you will see is a player who has the knack of being in the right place at the right time. That is an incredibly valuable skill.

Unfortunately, I think it's a skill that is becoming more and more overlooked in modern football. Everyone seems to be looking for flamboyant wingers, rapid strikers or attacking midfielders who can thunder them in from range. While those things are all great, there's a lot to be said for those players who just get into good spaces. It's my favourite role in football, purely because of the name – the raumdeuter, a "space investigator". That's sort of what Bobby is, and though it might not blockbuster viewing, it leads to goals, and my God do we need some of those.

Time to shine
Now, Bobby is by no means perfect. His finishing has been slightly erratic during his time by the river. After all, it took him four months to bag his first goal for us. However, you don't score 19 goals in a season by chance. If played in the right role, I see no reason why he can't score a significant number for us next season.

So, what is the right role for him? I think he excels best when playing off another, more physical striker (*cough* Mitrović *cough*). It may be naïve, but I want us to try and dominate the Championship. I want to see us scoring freely, bullying teams into submission. That means a move away from pragmatic football and it means getting your best players in their best positions and playing to their strengths.

The season Bobby scored 19 goals, he was playing alongside Famara Diédhiou. Together they scored 32 goals. This is no disrespect to Diédhiou, he's a player I quite like, but he's a BTEC Mitrović. If played together regularly, given time to develop that telepathic understanding, there is no reason why Bobby and Mitro can't form a lethal partnership.

At 28 years old, De Cordova-Reid should be hitting his peak as a player. Unfortunately I think he's spent the past three years playing in teams that don't correctly value his attacking contributions. This upcoming season is the perfect chance for him to assert himself in the Championship again, and I hope he is given the chance to do so.

Bruce eyeing win to finish at Fulham

Steve Bruce insists his Newcastle United side are desperate to end the season on a high when they round off 2020/21 at Fulham on Sunday afternoon (4pm kick-off).

United bring the curtain down on another campaign at Craven Cottage, where they played on the final day two years ago, securing a 4-0 win in the capital.

And with safety already secured - and Scott Parker's men having been relegated to the Championship - Bruce wants his side to finish with a flourish, and try and surpass last season's points total of 44 in the process.

"Just recently, just when we've needed it, when we've really come under the pump, we've produced form which has put us into the top six or seven for current form, which is terrific for the team," he said.

"I'm delighted with the way they've responded. We must finish off. We've got a chance to equal last year, or be better than last year in terms of points total, so let's try and do our utmost.

"The resolve and belief of the players has been terrific. Just when we needed it, when we were all up against it, they responded in the right way. Let's keep it together one more time."

The Magpies beat Sheffield United 1-0 in their final home game of the campaign on Wednesday evening, in front of a crowd at St. James' Park.

Bruce says he and his side loved the experience of having fans back in the stadium and, while United won't be backed by their own support in the capital on Sunday, he wants his players to make the most of the occasion before they depart for the off-season.

"Our performance in our last game away from home (at Leicester) was exceptional. I'm sure they've all enjoyed the experience of the crowds back in - I think we all have in the last week," said Newcastle's head coach. "It was certainly a different spectacle. I've watched two, three, four games this week with the supporters in.

"I'm sure they can go and enjoy the last game of the season and then have a well/earned break, for everybody concerned. I'm sure they're sick of the sight of me, for a start!

"So let's hope we can sign off (well), and we'll see them in a few weeks."

Meanwhile, Bruce has a couple of injury concerns ahead of the clash with Parker's side, with both Allan Saint-Maximin and Martin Dúbravka doubtful for the trip to London.

"We'll not know until today, when we'll see how they are, but it's Allan in particular, and the goalkeeper, Martin. We expect them to be OK, but we won't know 100 per cent until they go on the grass today," he added.

Aleksandar Mitrovic ruled out of Newcastle United reunion
Aleksandar Mitrovic will miss out on a reunion with Newcastle United after Fulham boss Scott Parker confirmed he will miss Sunday's game through injury.

Steve Bruce's side head to Craven Cottage 14 points above their hosts. Only last month had the tie been earmarked as a potential Premier League relegation decider.

Instead, the Magpies are searching for three points in order to beat last season's points total (44) and end a turbulent season in positive fashion.

And Parker has revealed former Toon striker Mitrovic, along with Antonee Robinson and Tom Cairney, are unavailable.

Meanwhile, midfielder Harrison Reed is also facing a late fitness test.

The Cottagers boss said: "Mitro, Jedi and TC are all out for the weekend.

"Harrison has a little bit of an issue, we'll make a call nearer the time."

Mitrovic was sold by Rafa Benitez to the West London club in 2018 for a reported £22million, rising to £27m.

The Serbian played 72 times for United, scoring 17 goals.

Fulham v Newcastle United

TEAM NEWS

Fulham trio Tom Cairney, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Antonee Robinson are all unavailable this weekend.

Harrison Reed will have an ankle injury assessed.

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce expects Allan Saint-Maximin and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to play despite their minor fitness issues.

They will be assessed before Sunday's match but leading goalscorer Callum Wilson remains out with a hamstring injury.

LAWRO'S PREDICTION

Fulham got a decent draw at Old Trafford in midweek and Newcastle saw off Sheffield United.

This might just be an open game, and a case of 'let's just go and play boys', especially from Fulham who will be in front of their fans for the first time in a while.

Prediction: 1-1

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Newcastle could win back-to-back Premier League away games at Fulham for the first time since 2005.
Fulham have won 12 Premier League matches against Newcastle - they've never beaten another side 13 times in the division.

Fulham

Fulham are winless in nine Premier League games, earning just two points during that run.
They have lost five successive league fixtures at home.
Only Sheffield United have scored fewer league goals than Fulham's four since the start of April.
They have won their final Premier League game in just one of the past seven seasons.
Scott Parker scored four goals in 55 Premier League appearances for Newcastle.

Newcastle United

Newcastle have won four of their past seven Premier League games (D1, L2).
They have won their final league fixture of the season in five of the six previous years.
Since the start of April, only Liverpool have scored more than Newcastle's 16 Premier League goals.
Joe Willock could join Alan Shearer as the only Newcastle players to score in seven consecutive Premier League appearances.
Willock's tally of seven league goals since his debut on 6 February is more than any Arsenal player in the same period.

Five Fulham players injured as Parker confirms all seven loanees are going

Five Fulham players have been ruled out of Fulham's final match of the season, against Newcastle.

Long-term absentees Tom Cairney and Terence Kongolo are joined on the sidelines by Aleksandar Mitrovic, Antonee Robinson and Harrison Reed.

"Harrison has a bit of an issue with his ankle and further up his leg as well," boss Scott Parker explained.

The head coach also confirmed all seven loan players will return to their respective clubs after Sunday.

The Whites have nine players returning from their loan spells at other clubs.

Parker said: "No loan player has a clause with an option to buy, so yeah, they'll be leaving."

Fulham hope to end the season with something to give their long-suffering fans, who have endured relegation for the second time in three seasons.

An easing of Covid-19 restrictions means some of those fans will be able to see their team in action.

"Against Liverpool (in December) there were only 2,000 there, but it felt as if the place was packed out," Parker said.

"So I hope the fans come back and support us. The team never let anyone down through lack of effort. It was just that little bit lack of quality at this level that was found wanting."

Tottenham Hotspur: Alex Crook discusses Scott Parker links

TalkSport insider Alex Crook has provided an update on the latest on Scott Parker potentially becoming the next manager of Tottenham Hotspur.

This weekend sees what should be the final match of Ryan Mason's interim spell in charge of Tottenham Hotspur, with a report from Football Insider claiming that the club are 'increasingly confident' they will have a new man in charge shortly after the end of the season.

Parker is one of the names that has been linked with the role, and speaking on the TalkSport Gameday podcast, Crook seemed increasingly confident that it would be the Fulham boss that would take over in North London, based on what he has been hearing from his sources:

"I think it will be Scott Parker. That's what I'm being told by people in the know."

TIF Thoughts on Alex Crook's comments about Scott Parker to Fulham...

There are reports of tensions between Parker and the hierarchy at Fulham over how he has overseen the club's relegation, but they do not intend to sack him as they value the stability that he brings by remaining in place over the summer.

So by the sounds of it, Tottenham would have to try and negotiate a deal to try and get Parker off Fulham's hands rather than have him fall into their laps, as it were.

But even so, this still arguably isn't the route that Spurs should be taking. Are they really going to put their major rebuild to someone who has only been in management for two years?

Whilst appointing someone young indicates that there are some long-term plans in place, there are issues at Spurs that need addressing in the short term, not least the situation surrounding Harry Kane and his future, whether it be at Tottenham or elsewhere.

Putting someone like Parker in charge right now would be throwing him in at the deep end, and it's a very big risk to assume that he'll be able to swim in the circumstances.

Scott Parker says Fulham 'never let anyone down' and wants fans to back team
Craven Cottage will welcome up to 2,000 supporters on Sunday for the visit of Newcastle.

Scott Parker wants Fulham fans to get behind a team he insists has "never let anyone down through lack of effort" despite their relegation from the Premier League.

Craven Cottage will welcome up to 2,000 supporters on Sunday for the visit of Newcastle which was heralded as a relegation showdown earlier in the season before the Magpies pulled clear.

Fans have only been allowed into the Cottage once this term, when they made their voices heard during a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on December 13.

Although up to 10,000 are permitted under Government guidelines, the redevelopment of the Riverside Stand and tight concourses behind the goal areas leave the club restricted to just 2,000.

"I don't know what reaction the players will get from the fans," Parker admitted.

"I hope that the fans come in and support this team, this team has never let anyone down through lack of effort, through a lack of pride or professionalism.

"This is a group of players who have worked tirelessly throughout this season to try their hardest to stay in this division, and where we've fallen short at times is due to maybe a bit of a lack of quality at this level and the level of what this league is.

"I'm sure the fans will appreciate the players in that even though they are disappointed."

Fulham's squad this season has been made up largely of loan players, and Parker said all are set to return to their parent clubs following the conclusion of the Newcastle match.

He said: "I think that will probably be the case, there is no player here on loan who has an automatic buy-in so those players will probably be leaving the football club at this present moment in time.

"We'll then look to go over the summer and work out where we need to go from there really."

Fulham have been relegated along with Sheffield United and West Brom, and although the other two clubs have already parted ways with their managers Parker stressed the importance of continuity.

"I think we're all in agreement that continuity at a football club is very important, of course it is," the Fulham boss said.

"It's decisions and the decisions we make between now and the end of the season will also contribute to that so those decisions and where we go, and the plan, and coming back up from the difficult league.

"That's what it is, it's not as easy as thinking that you just came out of the Premier League and you can bounce back, and I think you've seen that over the course of time with big teams that are still in that league.

"So of course continuity is important but also the decisions we make from now on in will be as well if we're going to be successful next year."

Pre-Newcastle Press Conference

Scott Parker is relishing the opportunity to play in front of Fulham fans once again.

A limited number of home supporters will be at Craven Cottage on Sunday when we host Newcastle United, and our Head Coach has missed having that backing in SW6.

"Big positive of course," he said of their return. "The season has been a very sterile one in stadiums. Certainly we've missed the supporters being in and around it; very hollow the stadiums we've played in.

"We had 2,000 fans for the Liverpool game, and it felt like it was packed out. We can't wait, we are looking forward to our fans coming back.

"The forefront of our mind is going out with a good performance and hopefully some points.

"Our fans have always been very, very supportive of the team. They've backed us through everything.

"I have no doubt that this year if Craven Cottage had been full, that extra support that our fans would've given us would probably at times have been the difference that we needed. Certainly, for a team like us.

"This team have never let anyone down through a lack of effort, pride or professionalism. This is a group of players who have worked tirelessly this season to try their hardest to stay in this division.

"Where we have fallen short at times is maybe due to a lack of quality at this level. I am sure the fans will appreciate the players, even though they are disappointed."

Parker was also asked how much a difficult campaign back in the top flight has affected him.

"It's not taken a lot out of me," he insisted. "Of course, it's been hard at times for everyone. But anyone who sits in this chair or any manager at the weekend, it's the same at times; the battles, the constant wanting to improve and get better.

"From day dot, when we walked in and I took over, certainly this year the challenge has been there and it is one we've embraced, every single one of us. I've looked forward to that, enjoyed that, embraced that.

"This is part and parcel of professional sport. If you want to sit in this chair, in professional sport you need to understand there are ups and downs and this year, at the end of it, it's not worked out.

"Learning, loads of learning, understanding things. As always I'm raring to go, the main focus now is Sunday. And after that raring to go again in terms of what is next for us to keep improving.

"I've been a full-time manager for two years. First full season had the high of being promoted and this year had the lows of relegation.

"The challenges, those experiences I've had, the improvements I've seen, the bigger picture, I often talk about that.

"In my case, I get a win or a loss, a promotion or relegation, and it's the be all and end all for everyone.

"But certainly, for me there are other bigger things that keep you going, that keep you there, keep you wanting to drive.

"Whether that is a team that has improved, a team you see in elements that have got better, individuals improving, they are all things that keep me motivated."

Following a brilliant performance at Old Trafford on Tuesday, Parker is now hoping to give the fans another display of note to reward them for their support.

"There is definitely a matter of pride," he stated. "I think that has been the case for large parts this season.

"Pride has been a large part, a team that had practically been written off at the start of the season and at times had to show and bring real pride to a football match. Certainly since our fate has been sealed with relegation.

"Again, it is about pride, professionalism, but there is also an element which is quality is well.

"The team want to go out there and show those characteristics but also show the qualities we have as a team."

Report: Spurs prepared to sell 23-year-old to fund move for Joachim Andersen

The Telegraph have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to sell Juan Foyth on a permanent basis this summer.

Foyth has impressed during his season-long loan spell at Villarreal and has been used in a variety of roles by Unai Emery including centre-back, centre midfield and right-back.

The Argentine helped the La Liga side overcome Arsenal in the Europa League semi-final and is in a race against time to be fit for the final against Manchester United next week.

The Telegraph claim that while Villarreal have the option to sign the 23-year-old permanently for £15m, the Yellow Submarine could face competition for the Tottenham man.

Marseille are also said to be interested in Foyth's services as they look to bolster their backline ahead of the new season.

The report reveals that Spurs are open to selling the defender who they signed from Estudiantes in 2017 and hope to use the funds raised from his sale to complete a deal for Joachim Andersen.

Spurs Web Opinion

Foyth finished the 2018-19 season very strongly and I, like many other Spurs fans, was hoping that the Argentine would have become a regular in the team last season.

However, it did not work out for the 23-year-old due to a combination of injuries and managerial change at the club. I cannot help but feel we missed a trick by not giving him a run in the side at right-back.

Report: Spurs-linked centre-back who's a 'perfect fit for Liverpool' wants Premier League football next season

Fabrizio Romano has provided an exciting update on reported Tottenham Hotspur target Joachim Andersen, who has been described as a "perfect fit for Liverpool".

Sky Sports reported earlier this month that Spurs have set their sights on the 24-year-old centre-back, who reportedly has a £20million price tag.

Although he hasn't been linked with Liverpool, pundit Robbie Earle described him in March as a player tailor-made for Jurgen Klopp's Reds.

"My underappreciated player of the week goes to Joachim Andersen, the big centre-half on loan from Lyon," the Wimbledon legend told the 2 Robbies podcast.

"He's 24 years of age – he's a man back there. He can win it, he can play, looks like he's got a little bit about him to organise those in and around him.

"Right now, he would be a perfect fit for Liverpool Football Club, by the way. Good size, can play, looks commanding, looks like he can organise."

Andersen, who is on loan at Fulham from Lyon, has been sensational this season, so much so that he's been handed the captain's armband on multiple occasions.

However, with the Cottagers set to play Championship football next season, Andersen's future is now uncertain.

According to Romano, the Denmark international's top priority is to secure Premier League football next season, and Spurs remain interested in his signature.

However, "several European clubs" have also reportedly expressed an interested in signing Andersen permanently.

TBR View:

Andersen has done so well at Fulham that club legend Tony Gale described him as "absolutely sensational".

Sadly for the Cottagers, their chances of signing him permanently are now extremely low in wake of their relegation from the Premier League.

Spurs could certainly do with Andersen to shore up a defence that has leaked goals this season, and although Liverpool have quite a few centre-backs in their ranks, they might as well check him out.

Parker to hold talks with Johansen as QPR pursue deal

Scott Parker will ask Stefan Johansen whether he wants to stay at Fulham or leave for QPR.

Rangers want to sign the Norwegian, who impressed while on loan with them during the second half of the season.

Johansen has a year remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage, but Whites boss Parker insists he only wants players who are committed to getting Fulham back to the Premier League following the club's relegation.

"First and foremost, you want players here who are hungry and want to face the battle that will be next year," Parker said.

Parker plans talks with Johansen and other Fulham players who have been out on loan, which includes Alfie Mawson and Anthony Knockaert.

"They're conversations that we'll have with them players who are out on loan. They're our players and they are under contract," Parker said.

"We need to work out what exactly is the best way to go. That's a process that will take place in due course."

Scott Parker: 'There is no reason why Mitrovic would leave Fulham'

Scott Parker said he can "see no reason why" Aleksandar Mitrovic would not be a Fulham player next season.

Fulham have struggled at the top end of the pitch, scoring just 27 goals this season ahead of the final match against Newcastle on Sunday, while only one club, rock-bottom Sheffield United, have netted fewer.

Aleksandar Mitrovic has, as even Parker admitted, not had the season he would have wanted on his return to the top flight, despite netting 26 times in 41 appearances on his way to the Sky Bet Championship golden boot last term.

This season he has scored three goals, although Parker does not expect him to depart Craven Cottage this summer.

"I see no reason why (Mitrovic would not be here next season)," Parker said.

"He's under contract. I'm not sure how long he has got but he's got a considerable amount of time on his contract. I don't see why that won't be the case."

The Fulham boss had been dismissive of questions concerning his own future at the club following his side's relegation from the Premier League, but on Friday insisted he remains committed to Craven Cottage.

"As always, I'm committed, I've been committed since day one," Parker said.

"My aim is and my ambition is to make this football club as strong and as successful as possible.

"That will always be my ambition. That's never changed."

Fulham had turned their season around from conceding 10 goals in their opening three matches and over the winter they managed to close a 10-point gap to safety to just two points.

However, towards the end of the season they fell short, securing just one point from seven as their relegation fate was sealed.

Reflecting on the season as a whole, Parker said: "I think we had a 20-day turnaround from Wembley to then coming back in, the days were very, very short.

"We went into this season with a very young squad. An inexperienced squad. I've said it before, but I think our highest Premier League appearance player was Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

"It was going to be a challenge for us. I think we understood that. At the start of the season, getting to grips with this league and trying to get a team together that could quickly be competitive was a challenge.

"I think that is the disappointing factor at the end of the season. Because I felt that the players and the team improved drastically. We became very competitive. Defensively, we became more solid.

"Of course as quickly as that came along then, all of a sudden, we found ourselves getting a lot of draws, so we needed to win football matches and try and score some goals. We have probably fallen a bit short in that area."

Newcastle Matchday Preview

Fulham v Newcastle United | Sunday 23rd May 2021 | 4pm | Craven Cottage | #FULNEW

The opposition

For some time it looked as though Newcastle were going to find themselves in a relegation scrap this year, but a run of just three defeats in their last 12 matches has seen them comfortably safe.
The return to fitness of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin played a key role in their revival, but so too did the January arrival of Joe Willock. The 21-year-old has scored seven times from midfield since joining on loan from Arsenal.
Victory for the Magpies on Sunday would see them end the campaign on 45 points, which would actually be an improvement on last season for them.

Attending the game

All tickets and medical questionnaires have been distributed to supporters. All attendees, including under-18s, must complete their questionnaire in advance of matchday. Failure to complete the questionnaire ahead of arrival to Craven Cottage will result in no entry to the ground; only after your questionnaire is completed will your match ticket be validated.

Programmes

All fans attending Sunday's match will be provided with a complimentary matchday programme upon arrival. These will be available to collect when entering through the turnstiles.

Weather

The Met Office is reporting a 20 per cent chance of rain at kick-off, with temperatures around 12 degrees.

Fulham team news

Fulham will be without Aleksandar Mitrović, Antonee Robinson, Tom Cairney and Terence Kongolo through injury on the final day. Harrison Reed was substituted in the first half at Old Trafford on Tuesday, and will be assessed ahead of any potential involvement at the weekend.

Newcastle team news

Saint-Maximin, Willock and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka all picked up knocks against Sheffield United in midweek and still need to be assessed. Backup 'keeper Karl Darlow is also injured so third choice Mark Gillespie could be in line for a first Premier League appearance. Top scorer Wilson will also miss out with a hamstring problem.

Player insight

Fabio Carvalho cannot wait to play in front of Fulham fans for the first time.

The attacking midfielder has impressed in his three Premier League appearances to date, but Sunday will be the first opportunity he's had to do so in front of the Craven Cottage faithful.

"I'm buzzing because I'm yet to play in front of the Fulham fans," he told FFCtv. "I think it will be very special for me because they've shown so much love to me, without me even playing in front of them, so I want to give everything back to them."

Form

Fulham: DLLLD

Newcastle: DLWLW

Pre-match quotes

"We had 2,000 fans for the Liverpool game, and it felt like it was packed out. We can't wait, we are looking forward to our fans coming back."

Scott Parker
Fulham Head Coach

"The resolve and belief of the players has been terrific. Just when we needed it, when we were all up against it, they responded in the right way. Let's keep it together one more time."

Neeskens Kebano on his time at Middlesbrough, his one regret, his future and scooter-gate

Neeskens Kebano chats to Teesside Live having made a positive impression during his loan spell at Middlesbrough

There's a hearty laugh down the other end of the phone.

I had to ask, and no doubt the DR Congo international was expecting the question.

"Scooter-gate, Neeskens, what happened on Djed Spence's scooter?"

Kebano has spent the last four months on loan at Middlesbrough from Fulham but had missed the final-day defeat to Wycombe Wanderers. To our surprise, Neil Warnock declared after that they'd caught him mucking around on Spence's scooter around the training ground and believed he'd suffered a hamstring injury in doing so.

"Nothing happened!" he laughed.

"I was on Djed's scooter around the training ground. But nothing happened.

"We then had training on the Friday and in the training I injured my hamstring.

"That's when it happened, not on Djed's scooter, honest."

That chuckle wouldn't be the last of our half-hour conversation as the Fulham man spoke over the phone - taking time from his break in France where he's visiting family - to reflect on his loan spell at the club. The laughs were indicative of the warmth for which he held the club and his experiences playing for it.

It's a four-month period that in the main he remembers very fondly.

He laughs as he's reminded of the social media videos that saw him nutmegged by Spence, while close friend Yannick Bolasie was always on hand to film him losing those tense games of Uno. Overall, when reflecting on his time at the club, it's that dressing room camaraderie that he'll remember the most.

"The mood of every player in the changing room was excellent," he said.

"I've been in many changing rooms and that one was one of the best I have been in.

"We were together. We'd be in early to train until about one, but most of us would not go home until about four because we would just hang around, chatting, laughing, playing cards. It was very good.

"Sometimes when you join a new team you might need a little time to settle yourself and integrate yourself into the group.

"But with this group, after two days I was already feeling like this was home."

There was a point in the season where that slightly turned.

Following a defeat to QPR Warnock blasted certain members of his squad and talked about cliques behind the scenes. Ashley Fletcher and Kebano's international teammate Britt Assombalonga were ostracised from the squad soon after.

But Kebano insists there were no issues for him as the rest of the group had to just get on with their jobs and respect the manager's decision.

He said: "Football is football. Sometimes decisions are made and you just have to respect them and get on with your job because that's the way it is.

"Everyone reacted to that in the right way because we stayed focused on the task at hand and on the football.

"We had to respect the decision that the gaffer took and deal with it."

In Boro's defence, the big decision from Warnock was met with a turnaround in fortunes as his side won the next two and drew with Luton having previously gone five without a win.

Kebano was a key member of Warnock's side in the second half of the season - making 18 appearances, netting once and assisting four.

"I was desperate to get out and play for someone who would trust me," he said.

"I had a chat with Neil Warnock and he told me that he would play me and that he believed in me. It was everything I needed to hear.

"And because some of my friends were there as well, my choice was obvious.

"I really enjoyed my time there.

"It was such a good move for me where I was able to get some game time and just enjoy myself.

"As a footballer, I just always want to play. I know part of being a footballer is that you could be on the bench and not play sometimes, but I just really want to always play, and play a part in doing a job for the team.

"I felt love from the supporters too, even though they couldn't be at the games, and that was a very big thing for me."

He felt the love of Warnock too - the Boro boss keeping his promise and giving Kebano the game time he craved so much after a frustrating first half of the campaign at Craven Cottage.

"Neil was excellent," he continued.

"He has eight promotions on his CV and when you reach that amount it's not luck anymore. You know what you're doing.

"Playing under such a great manager is always great for your development and under someone like Neil Warnock you're always learning.

"I really like his character. He doesn't go all the way around when he has something to tell you, he just tells you straight. I like people like that.

"He is funny as well - really funny. But you have to know when it's the right time to joke and when is the time to work.

"I was really pleased to play under him."

Kebano's four months saw him put in some dazzling displays with his trickery and positivity a joy to watch. He quickly became an important member of the team.

One particular moment stands out, though.

Sheffield Wednesday, 1-1, Kebano cross, Josh Coburn with a wonderful headed finish. The 18-year-old striker celebrating a dream home debut with Kebano the provider for what was the second of Boro's three goals that afternoon.

Should Coburn go on to enjoy a sterling Boro career then the Fulham loanee may have written his way into club folklore. Whenever we look back at that first Coburn goal, Kebano will always be there swinging in the cross.

The wideman wanted all praise to be directed towards the young player, however, who he believes has a very bright future.

"That was a special moment," Kebano says.

"Josh is a young player and he was with us training for weeks before that moment.

"I was always talking to him and telling him that football careers go quick so make the most of it.

"I provided the cross for his goal, but all credit to him. He was the one who, first of all, fought off the defender, and then he finished the cross for a very, very good goal.

"So all credit to him for that. Great goal.

"I was there like the big brother to offer him support.

"The goal put him under the spotlight and that was great for him. But it was important to use my experience and remind him that he still has to continue working hard because the hard work he's been doing is what got him where he is now.

"It was a very special moment for him."

It wasn't all positive for the 29-year-old on Teesside, however.

The last signing of what, on paper at least, looked a strong January transfer window, Boro appeared well-positioned to continue their excellent work of the first half of the season and challenge for the top six.

That was the clear message to Kebano when he arrived, and it irks him they weren't able to achieve it.

He said: "My only regret in my time at the club is that we weren't able to make the play-offs.

"I really wanted to help the club achieve that and I really thought we could do it.

"I looked at every player there at the club and all of the talent that the team had and it was more than makeable. We could have definitely done it.

"Unfortunately we couldn't do it. We lost some key games and threw away some points we shouldn't have. It's my only regret of my time there.

"It's hard to pinpoint why. I know sometimes there's a desire to find the reasons why, but I honestly couldn't explain why that happened as it did.

"Maybe we just weren't ready. I don't put things on bad luck. When you don't achieve something it is because you don't deserve it, and maybe someone else deserved it more than you.

"The goal for the club will be to push again for success next season and to work harder for that."

Speaking of next season, Kebano's own future remains uncertain for now.

He returns to Fulham this summer with 12 months still to run on his Craven Cottage deal. Their season is not yet over, though their fate is sealed - they will be competing with Boro in the Championship next season.

As things stand a Boro return appears unlikely.

A lot could depend on Fulham's stance on his future. Entering his final year, if they choose to sell then they'd likely look for a price above what Boro could afford to pay.

Kebano knows not what the future holds, but loved his time at Boro and would never say never with regards to one day returning.

He concluded: "It's strange playing without the fans, but from day one I felt them behind me, supporting me and sending me messages on social media.

"There was always nice words and encouragement from supporters.

"And I see it as well when they write things like, 'please stay next season'.

"Honestly, it's just really pleasing for me to know that they really like me, and I always say, you never know what could happen in the future. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

"I would consider every option, especially Middlesbrough if it ever was an option.

"I'm yet to speak to Fulham because their season is not yet over. So I don't yet know what the plan is going to be for me."

Whatever the plan, wherever the club, Kebano will be a credit to whoever he plays for next season and beyond.

He thanks me as our interview comes to an end. In reality, for providing such entertainment at a difficult time for many, I should be thanking him.

Fulham to hold talks with last season's Nottingham Forest loanee Anthony Knockaert

Fulham will hold talks with Anthony Knockaert about his future at the club, as per a report by West London Sport.

Fulham still have the winger under contract for another two years.

Knockaert, who is 29 years old, spent the past season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship.

He moved to the City Ground in October last year and made 34 appearances for the Reds in the league, chipping in with two goals.

Fulham boss, Scott Parker, has said: "They're conversations that we'll have with them players who are out on loan (including Knockaert). They're our players and they are under contract. We need to work out what exactly is the best way to go. That's a process that will take place in due course."

The London club are back in the Championship next term and have a big decision to make on the futures of some of their players.

Knockaert moved to England in 2012 and had three years at Leicester City, helping the Foxes gain promotion to the Premier League in his second season.

The Frenchman went to Standard Liege for a brief stint before Brighton and Hove Albion snapped him up in 2015.

He became a key player for the Seagulls and scored 27 goals in 139 games for them.

Fulham came calling in the summer of 2019 and he was part of their side promoted under Parker last year.

However, he was given the green light to leave on loan for Nottingham Forest with his opportunities for game time limited.

Fulham now plan to hold talks over his situation at Craven Cottage.

Fulham to have talks with Stefan Johansen with QPR lurking

Fulham will hold talks with Stefan Johansen about his future at the club, as per a report by West London Sport.

Fulham have the midfielder under contract for another season.

Johansen, who is 30 years old, joined QPR on loan in the January transfer window and was a hit with Mark Warburton's side.

They are keen to sign him on a permanent basis this summer to boost their midfield department for the next campaign.

Fulham plan to have discussions with him as to whether he wants to stay at Craven Cottage until the end of his contract or head out the exit door.

Their boss, Scott Parker, has said: "First and foremost, you want players here who are hungry and want to face the battle that will be next year.
They're conversations that we'll have with them players who are out on loan. They're our players and they are under contract.

"We need to work out what exactly is the best way to go. That's a process that will take place in due course."

Johansen joined Fulham in 2016 from Celtic and has since made 136 appearances for the Cottagers in all competitions, chipping in with 21 goals.

He has also had a loan spell away from the London club at West Bromwich Albion.

The Norway international has helped Fulham gain promotion to the Premier League twice before in the past so that experience would come in handy as they eye an immediate return to the Premier League next term.

However, he may fancy sticking around at QPR.
