Title: Rodrigo Muniz = Richarlison 2.0?
Post by: MickyAdamsFamily on July 23, 2021, 02:54:40 AM
There may be some kernel of truth to the Muniz stories. Marco Silva got personally involved to convince a young Richarlison to leave Fluminense and join Watford (over Ajax!)....
"We were looking for new signings during our pre-season camp in Austria," he says. "After a lot of research, we noticed Richarlison at Fluminense as an opportunity and I still remember a whole night spent watching so many games of him. We decided to really try to buy him, even though it was never easy for young Brazilians to get used to the Premier League. But I was convinced because Richarlison is not a typical Brazilian guy, he has something European in his maturity. The negotiation started in the middle of the week so when I came back from Austria I called his agent, whom I already knew. He tells me: 'I'm sorry Marco but Richarlison will fly to the Netherlands on Monday and sign with Ajax.' I immediately replied: 'No, you have to stop everything. I want Richarlison at all costs at Watford.' So I get Richarlison's number, phone him and speak to him in Portuguese. He tells me: 'I am joining Ajax' and I said: 'No, you are not, you are coming to Watford.' I told him that I would support him with everything.  Richarlison sounded happy and then I had to convince the Watford owner to match Ajax's offer and spend a lot of money on Richarlison, a very young Brazilian boy who had never played in Europe before. Together, though, we managed to stop Richarlison's flight to the Netherlands and two days later he arrived at the Watford training ground"

Just to manage our expectations, Muniz is about the third choice forwards for Flamengo at the moment and has played about twenty games in total. Richarlison had played a few seasons in the first team and was one of their star players when Everton signed him.

Granted, the other Flamengo strikers are no slouches, led by Gabriel Barbosa. His competitors (Barbosa, Bruno Henrique and Pedro) flopped in Europe and returned to Brazil though, so no such thing as a sure thing.

Thought Watford signed him?

Just looking at some videos one thing that stands out is his physical strength. For a 20 year old he does come off best against older, bigger centre backs. His pace as well would be an excellent foil to Mitro

No. No he isn't.

Lets not get carried away here, people.

I was referring more to the potential transfer of Muniz to Fulham echoing that of Richarlison's transfer from Fluminense to Watford, rather than the style or quality of the players being similar. I was pointing out that Silva got directly involved in convincing a young Brazilian striker (who was being courted by several big European teams) to choose to join a lower profile English club, Watford, over the Dutch giants, Ajax. It seems that Silva's direct intervention, using some combination of cajoling and bullying with his willpower and charisma (and being a native speaker of Portuguese) managed to turn the tide.
I have to imagine that Silva will be playing a central role in our alleged approach to Flamengo for Muniz.

Hammyend had a translation of a Brazilian sporting news piece that included this:
"The young forward, who saw a proposed move to Atletico Madrid fall through earlier this year, is intrigued by the prospect of moving to London and has held positive discussions with new Fulham boss Marco Silva."
So it would appear that Silva may have been trying to work his telephonic magic again...

May I just check the status of this one on the rumourometer, I'm a bit out of touch.

It's a rumour that this lad may be available. On top of which it is rumoured that Silva may be speaking to him (in Portuguese) as both have a common language.

I would point out that there are approx 270,000,000 Portuguese speakers on this planet.
To be fair, not all of them have any discernable football talent.....Although that hasn't stopped us in the past.

He may also be Orlando Sa or Rui Fonte 2.0. These type of transfers tend to bite us in the hind quarters.

So if it's a loan with an option to buy, that makes sense.

Removes wasting 25m on a player that turns out to be a dud, and judging by what I have seen, if he has broken into the Flamengo first team, one of the better teams on the planet, this is a great piece of business, just for the opportunity value alone at just age 20. He looks the part, and this is the Championship, not the Champions League.
