Title: Penalties
Post by: Andy S on March 13, 2022, 12:15:37 PM
I don't think I have ever seen Rodak save a penalty. If he had just stood in the middle of the goal he would have saved a few as it seems most players seem to send the straight down the middle. So what's the answer?

Ya, then if he stayed in the middle we'd have someone ask why he was afraid to dive to the right or the left.  Its all about trying to best guess where the kicker wants to place it.   Its like rolling a dice and some keepers are luckier than others in guessing the right way.

Yeah I was thinking the same. He's a very good keeper at this level though, but we will need to upgrade for the Prem.

As a qualified coach I'm surprised how many keepers seem to dive in hope rather than have a plan with all the time and facilities they have to study the penalty.
Lets be clear, all keepers should be on a hiding to nothing when facing a penalty but I believe the law of averages will ensure more saves if the stay and wait.
The well struck penalty in or near the corners will always score but the current way of trying to get the keeper to sell himself and then put it down the middle is a mistake waiting to happen if only the keeper was brave enough to wait.

According to transfermarkt, Rodak has saved 8 and not saved 30 penalties - so only slightly better than 1 in 4 (only 3 in a Fulham shirt - 2 of which were in a reserve game):

I remember Bettinelli saved a fair few for us - including two from Nakhi Wells in one match!  So, I checked and his penalty record is indeed much better: Saved 15, Not saved 27. So, better than 1 in 3!

I'm not sure how accurate this in terms of did he save 15 penalties or were some off target?

I don't think that is accurate - I seem to remember Jed Wallace grazing the bar/blasting it over rather than him saving it.

I believe those stats just mean any penalty that is not converted whilst he is in goal.

Pretty certain Rodak has never saved a pen for our first team.

No, it has to be wrong to judge a keeper on the number of penalties he has saved. Luck plays such a big part in it.

The best keepers don't just guess they do their homework and understand how the player takes penalties, and/or waits for the player to show where they are going to put it
