Title: A Toast to Columbus Legends departing
Post by: pettyfog on January 01, 2011, 12:09:41 AM
* A Captain, not only of the team but of the fans, who inspired the Telegraph to write: Why can't Terry be like that? (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/international/3153323/Columbus-Crews-Frankie-Hejduk-shows-how-to-captain-your-side-MLS-style-Football.html)

* One of few players who could make Brian McBride the second greatest ever to play for Columbus

* And a guy most of you never heard of, the longest tenured Crew player; he loved the team and Columbus such that he hung around through thick and thin, taking a cut to league minimum and missing out on NZ's WC run when it's pretty sure he would have been on their roster if he'd gone to A-League.  Yes, he was at least as good as Simon Elliot

Duncan 'Beaker' Oughton

Must admit I have no clue about this chap, but I do very much respect the mans loyalty and attitude.

In this day and age you don't get much of that anymore.

Maybe some kids will learn from him but I doubt it. The agents will make sure of that.

Frankie Hejduk was a man of modest talent (he couldn't cross to save his life) but had a heart as big as all out doors. No one and I mean no one could out motor him. He was as fast in the 90th. minute as he was in the first. He has the courage the equal of a certain McGod. A typical American football player. You might beat him but he'd never quite. Gotta love the guy.

It will be interesting to see where Schelotto will end up if he doesnt retire, hopefully he stays stateside, players like him are a big help to the league

+1.  Tremendous respect for both players.   MLS has indeed been very lucky to Schelotto.  :wine:

Gije's corners and free kicks were things of beauty.
