Revealed! Which Championship teams have the hardest – and easiest – starts to 2019/20?

Why Frank Lampard should get out of Derby while he can, how Sheffield Wednesday could find themselves top – and when Leeds need to avoid burnout

A strong start. That's the dream, isn't it? You spend all of July idly thinking of how many points you'll have by October – just as long as you kick off with a win.

Then August comes and reality hits. The opposition teams are actually better than in your idle, hazy, summer imagination. Especially in the Championship, The Most Unpredictable League On Earth™ – Where Anyone Can Beat Anyone©.

So whose fans should stop dreaming immediately? Who has the toughest start to the campaign? With a little help from Ben Mayhew (@Experimental361), we've had a look at the difficulty of every team's fixture list, according to where the bookies' expect each club to finish in the league next May.

So what have we found?

CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES

Well, it's no wonder that Frank Lampard could soon be departing Frank Lampard's Derby County: the Rams face five of the teams expected to finish above them in their first eight matches. If he stuck around, his managerial reputation could be a little less shiny by the time they take on Barnsley in early October – their first match against a predicted bottom-eight side, which kicks off an easy-looking month for them.

Should Derby find themselves considering a managerial change mid-season, pre-Christmas might be the best time to do it. A new face in the dugout would coincide with a run of five games in a row against the league's weakest sides over the festive period.

Newly-promoted Luton may also find the start of the campaign heavy going: they have to take on four of the likely top eight in August alone.

Blackburn are the only other team to face four of the top sides before September starts: they'll have played Fulham, Middlesbrough, Cardiff and West Brom by the time the school runs begin.

Sheffield Wednesday, who enjoyed a boost in the second half of last season under new manager Steve Bruce, could enjoy a good start to 2019/20. The strongest side they will face in their first six games are Preston.

However, February is the big month to watch in the Championship this season, with the EFL planning to somehow squeeze seven rounds of fixtures into a mere 28 days. For Wednesday, that could break their season: they face only two of the bottom eight sides after Valentine's Day.

Cardiff's start also looks relatively benign, but should they hope to bounce straight back to the Premier League, it's their run-in that will grab attention. The Bluebirds face three of their promotion rivals in April.

At the other end of the table (probably), Wigan and Luton could cause enormous changes to the standings on a weekly basis as the season reaches its climax. They both take on four of their fellow likely strugglers once we're into spring.

The bookies' favourites to be champions this time around are Leeds, who seemed to lose steam towards the end of last season. Marcelo Bielsa's side may be looking at March as the key period in their title run-in, when they take on all of last year's relegated Premier League sides: Huddersfield, Cardiff and Fulham. If they can get through that unscathed, they may avoid the collapse that blighted their April this year.

European side join race for Fulham midfielder

La Liga outfit Villarreal are interested in a loan move for Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, France Football have reported.

Zambo Anguissa only joined Fulham from French side Marseille last summer for a fee reported by The Guardian to a club record figure of around £30million on a five year contract.

Despite that price tag, Zambo Anguissa endured a difficult debut season at Craven Cottage, making just 25 appearances in all competitions for Fulham as they suffered an immediate relegation back to the Championship.

It is now thought that Fulham are keen to move Zambo Anguissa on from the club, and Villarreal are said to be open to a loan move for the midfielder.

It may be some time until Zambo Anguissa's future is decided for certain, as the 23-year-old is currently away on international duty with Cameroon, who are competing in the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and will begin their campaign with a group stage match against Guinea-Bissua on Tuesday night.

The Verdict
It will be intriguing to see what Fulham's response to this reported interest is.

Given the price they paid for Zambo Anguissa, you would have thought the club would have preferred to secure a permanent move for the midfielder rather than the loan one reportedly considered by Villarreal in order to make back some of the sizeable fee they spent on him.

You would imagine however that Zambo Anguissa will not be on a small wage at Fulham, so they may eventually consent to a loan move in order to get him off the wage budget.

Having spent so much in what seemed to be such an encouraging summer transfer window last season, Fulham are now facing the long term consequences of those moves failing to pay off if they are unable to move on the likes of Zambo Anguissa sooner longer than later, not least due to the length of contract they have been given.

Aston Villa face Fulham competition for Premier League ace

Premier League new boys Aston Villa have already received some competition in their pursuit of Dwight Gayle, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The Villans are chasing the Newcastle United star this summer to replace Tammy Abraham, who it looks like will be staying at Chelsea next term and not returning to Villa Park.

However it appears as though Fulham are going to rival any Villa bid for the striker, with a fee of £20 million being touted about for his services.

Villans boss Dean Smith knows that he has to add firepower to his ranks if his side are going to survive beyond their first season back in the Premier League, and the Newcastle man is someone he wants.

Gayle had a successful loan spell with West Bromwich Albion last season, ironically assisting Villa in their promotion quest when he was dismissed in the first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final between the two, rendering him suspended for the return game which the Villa Park outfit won on penalties.

The striker has a very good record in the second tier of English football, but his statistics in the Premier League do not make quite the same reading, which would be a concern for Villans fans should they sign the non-league graduate.

While Villa are yet to place an offer for Gayle, it appears that Fulham have got the bidding underway with a £20m move for the former Crystal Palace star, which will make Smith think long and hard about whether to approach Newcastle over a potential transfer.

Having secured promotion back to the Premier League, the Villans do have cash to spend, and have already been flexing their muscles in the market this summer, but whether they would want to pay such a large fee to a possible direct rival next term remains to be seen.

Thorsteinsson Bids Farewell

The Club can confirm that an agreement has been reached allowing Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson to join Danish side, Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF), on a permanent transfer from July 1st.

The Icelandic Under-21 international spent the most part of last season on loan at Vendsyssel who were unable to avoid relegation from the Danish Superliga.

We'd like to wish Jon all the best in the future and thank him for his services at Fulham.

'Might well reach double figures' – What can be expected from Barnsley hot-shot: The verdict

Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel has a job on his hands this summer as he looks to prepare for the challenge of the Championship next season, after a campaign that saw the Tykes achieve automatic promotion as runners-up to Champions Luton Town.

Though there is bound to be some recruitment at Oakwell this summer, Stendel will be hoping that his existing squad can make the step-up to the English second tier, with the goals from striker Cauley Woodrow crucial, having chipped in with 16 goals and two assists during the last campaign.

But how many goals will Woodrow score in the Championship next season?

We discuss........

Tommy Joyce

"Cauley Woodrow had a great season in League One last year, scoring at over a goal every two games with 16 in 31.

"Whether Woodrow will be able to replicate that kind of form is dependent on the service he receives, but he will need to have a good season if Barnsley are to stay up.

"Woodrow is a good finisher, but hasn't got the best record in the Championship scoring only 14 in 76 appearances.

"However, he hasn't normally had such an influential role while in this league, so the 24-year-old might have a good chance to improve his tally.

"I think Woodrow will get to 10 but, considering that Barnsley will have it tough in the Championship, anything more than 15 will be a tough ask.

"I reckon 14 goals for Woodrow next season."

Kealan Hughes

"Barnsley were a high scoring side last year with only two other teams in the division scoring more, and despite the step up in quality manager Daniel Stendel will probably not adapt his style a great deal.

"That would be good news for Woodrow, who thrives off service and linking up with his team mates. The 24-year-old scored an impressive 16 goals in 31 appearances and although he has never scored at the same rate in the Championship, next year could be his time to shine.

"He is settled now and has a club, manager and team mates who believe in him. That has given him the confidence to do well and score goals and that should continue.

"He is capable of being a 20-goal a season striker one day, but since it is Barnsley's first season back in the second-tier it is more likely that he will score 15-20, which would be a very good return."

Alfie Burns

"I've never been overly impressed with Woodrow in the Championship, and his record isn't the best when he's been in the second-tier.

"However, it sometimes takes a player to drop down a division to find themselves, and that could well be the case with the Barnsley man.

"16 goals for the Tykes will have boosted his confidence, and he will be playing in a side looking to do things the right way next season under Daniel Stendel.

"If he and his teammates hit the ground running, Woodrow might well reach double figures again."

Thorsteinsson leaves Fulham

Fulham have confirmed that their Icelandic winger Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson will leave the club next week and sign for Aarhus Gymnastikforening.

The 20 year-old, who joined Fulham's academy after a successful trial, was quickly promoted from the Under 18s into the Under-23 set up and made an impression with a number of spectacular strikes, including against Norwich in the Premier League Cup and at Charlton Athletic in the Checkatrade Trophy.

His progression at Motspur Park was marked by international honours and a call-up to the Icelandic senior squad. He has made three senior appearances for his country, scoring his first international goal during Iceland's 2-2 with Sweden in Doha in January. Thorsteinsson, who spent last season on loan in Denmark with Vendsyssel FF, has now opted to leave Craven Cottage in order to gain regular first-team football.

"It was tough to swallow" – Defender speaks out on failed Fulham transfer, club broke promises

Back in April, we covered an article in Sport/Foot that looked at Benoit Poulain's failed transfer to Fulham in January as the Cottagers were scrambling around Europe looking for defensive reinforcements.

The then Premier League side made three separate bids to sign the Frenchman, yet they never managed to convince Club Brugge to part with the then 31-year-old, much to his displeasure.

Now, six months after the events, the player, out of contract at the end of the month, spoke to Walfoot about it all, and revealed some rather interesting events that took place behind the scenes.

He said: "The club promised that if something suitable landed on their desk, they would let me go to thank me for services provided. A few days later, Fulham offered €1.5m for a 31-year-old with six months left on his deal. That's more than good enough.

"They didn't do anything other than ignore it. I wanted to try the Premier League, but I was still contracted to Brugge, so I respected their decision even if it was tough to swallow. They even followed that by promising me financial compensation, but that never turned up..."

Following the failed transfer, Poulain was pushed to one side by Ivan Leko, who tried out Sofyan Amrabat, followed by Clinton Mata stepping into a more central role.

This meant the defender, who had been at the club since 2016, didn't get a chance to say goodbye to the Club Brugge fans, something he would have really liked to do.

As for what's next, there are a few options, including a potential return to France.

Walsall Sign Former Fulham Striker

Walsall have today confirmed the signing of Fulham striker Elijah Adebayo.

His full name is Elijah Anuoluwapo Oluwaferanmi Oluwatomi Oluwalana Ayomikulehin Adebayo – don't expect a chant appearing anytime soon!

Adebayo is a 6ft 4″ (links to his Wiki page) striker who has been on loan at Slough, Cheltenham, Swindon and most recently Stevenage.

Adebayo joined Fulham aged just nine years old and featured heavily for the U18s in the 2013/14 season, making 16 appearances in all competitions.

He then joined Slough Town on a month's loan at the end of October, scoring a hat-trick on his debut. Later in the season he took in a similar spell at Bognor Regis, and returned to Fulham from his time on the South coast with five goals in seven appearances. Coming back to the PL2 side Adebayo made 17 appearances for the Under-23s in the 2016/17 season.

In January 2018 Adebayo joined Cheltenham Town on a six month loan after impressing in the PL2, having notched up 11 goals and 7 assists by Christmas. He made 7 appearances for Cheltenham, scoring twice and assisting once.

In July 2018 he secured a second League Two loan spell at Swindon Town, this time for the entire season, but was recalled in January. Subsequently, the forward then joined Stevenage for the remainder of the 2019 campaign.

Everyone at Vital Walsall welcomes Elijah to the club.

Elijah Adebayo: Former Fulham forward joins Walsall

Elijah Adebayo left Fulham without making a first-team appearance, but did feature for their Under-21 side in the EFL Trophy

Walsall have signed former Fulham striker Elijah Adebayo.

The 21-year-old, whose contract length has not been disclosed, was released by Fulham this month having failed to make a first-team appearance for the club.

Adebayo spent much of the past two seasons on loan in League Two, playing for Cheltenham, Swindon and Stevenage.

"It's always a bit different when you are on loan but I can now call this place my home and try to do as much as I can for Walsall," Adebayo said.

"I am a young striker but I want to really kick on now and show people what I am about and what I have already got."

Walsall manager Darrell Clarke said the forward, who scored five goals in 25 league appearances for Swindon last season before a stint with Stevenage, has the "attributes to be a top-class player".

"He's quick, technically good, can win headers and run in behind. He's got all the tools," said Clarke.

'It's an absolute disgrace' – Many Fulham fans react as club confirm player news

Many Fulham fans have been left frustrated after they announced the departure of a young winger.

Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson, an Iceland U-21 international, left the club to join Danish side AGF Aarhus.

Thorsteinnsonn, 20, will officially leave Fulham on July 1.

Born in Reykjavik, the Icelandic has been on loan at Danish Superliga side Vendsyssel FF, where he played 26 times, scoring four goals and assisting four times – though he was unable to prevent them from getting relegated via the play-offs.

The youngster must have done well enough to impress in Denmark, though, with fellow Superliga side AGF Aarhus capturing his signature.

Within a statement announcing his departure, Fulham said: "We'd like to wish Jon all the best in the future and thank him for his services at Fulham."

However, less impressed are the Fulham fans who are concerned about the club allowing so many of their young players to leave the club.

The Twitter replies to the news were mostly negative, with numerous people asking "why?" he left the club.

Other frustrated fans said: "damn, really wanted to see him develop" and one fan even asked if "we got any kids left in the club now?".

Former Fulham striker joins Weston-super-Mare after leaving Forest Green Rovers

New addition at Woodspring Park

Isaac Pearce scores Forest Green's fourth

Isaac Pearce has joined Weston-super-Mare following his departure from Forest Green Rovers.

The Bristol-born 20-year-old was released by the League Two club at the end of last season.

He had previously been on the books of Fulham, appearing on loan for Bath City and Larkhall Athletic, arriving at the New Lawn last summer following a successful trial period.

Pearce scored his first senior goal in the 4-0 Checkatrade Trophy group stage win over Cheltenham Town in September.

He joined Gloucester City on loan midway through the season before returning to his parent club in January.

Pearce, who was also on the books of Bristol Rovers as a youngster, will now play under ex-Forest Green caretaker boss Scott Bartlett at Southern League Premier Division South club Weston.

Defender Scott Laird has also made the move from Nailsworth to Woodspring Park this summer, taking on the role of player/assistant manager of the Seagulls.

Fixtures In Focus: Part Three

The next three sides we're analysing were all competing in different divisions last season; Charlton, Derby and Huddersfield.

Charlton Athletic
Charlton returned to the Championship after a three year absence with a dramatic victory over Sunderland in the League One Play-Off Final in May. After losing in the Semi-Finals the previous season, the Addicks clinched their place in England's second tier when Patrick Bauer's goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time secured a 2-1 win. Manager Lee Bowyer's contract was up in the summer and for a period it looked like a new deal would not be agreed, but fans were delighted when a one-year extension was announced last week.

Top scorer: Lyle Taylor (25)

Dafabet promotion odds: 16/1

2019/20 fixtures: Craven Cottage 05/10/19, The Valley 25/01/20

Fulham (Parker, Rodallega 2) 3-0 Charlton – 24/10/14

Fulham (Dempsey 3, Duff) 4-0 Charlton – 07/01/12

Derby County
After winning a gripping Play-Off Semi-Final encounter with Leeds United, Derby just fell short at Wembley, with a late surge not enough to come back against Aston Villa who claimed a 2-1 win. Nonetheless, Frank Lampard impressed in his first season as a manager, while the club also benefited from the strong performances of loanees Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Harry Wilson.

Last season: 6th

Derby (Nugent 3, Russell) 4-2 Fulham (Ayité 2) – 04/04/17

Huddersfield Town
After becoming the first side to win promotion to the top flight with a negative goal difference, Huddersfield defied the odds to secure a second season in the Premier League with a resolute 2017/18 campaign. They were unable to repeat the feat last term, though, despite their best efforts, finishing 10 points below the Whites at the foot of the table.
