Fulham lead the fight to sign former Portsmouth striker Frederic Piquionne - report

Fulham are out ahead of fellow Premier League sides West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers in the race for Portsmouth loan star Frederic Piquionne.

The Frenchman's spell with Pompey is now over and the 31-year-old wants to remain in the Premier League after a successful debut season in England.

Lyon value Piquionne at £3million, a price that a number of Premier League sides will be willing to pay for the striker, according to Sky Sports.

Piquionne scored 11 goals for Portsmouth this season, an impressive tally for a team that finished dead last in the league this season.

Fulham have contacted the Ligue 1 giants to negotiate a deal that would bring Piquionne to Craven Cottage next season.

One of Roy Hodgson's top priorities is to strengthen his attack in the transfer window and the Frenchman is said to be near the top of his wish list.

Zamora swap mooted

Aston Villa are believed to be prepared to offer Fulham Nicky Shorey and Steve Sidwell to capture Bobby Zamora.

Zamora has enjoyed a fantastic season at Craven Cottage as Fulham reached the Europa League final and the striker revealed he would have been a part of England's World Cup plans had injury not wrecked his chances.

Villa are thought to be keen to secure a deal for Zamora and boss Martin O'Neill hopes to secure the striker's services with a £7million bid, with a swap deal also suggested involving Shorey, who enjoyed a productive loan spell with Fulham this season, and midfielder Sidwell.

However, Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is desperate to keep hold of the powerful forward and it is thought he will try and prevent the striker leaving the west London outfit.

Nicky Shorey and Stefano Okaka back the Places for Players initiative

Fulham FC players Nicky Shorey and Stefano Okaka surprised members of the Fulham FC Foundation's Down's Syndrome Tennis team recently by joining them, along with Anne Keothavong, British Women's number 3, whilst they trained at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Roehampton, Surrey.

The players, taking part in the Premier League Places for Players initiative, took time out from their evening to assist Fulham FC Foundation and Tennis Foundation staff in coaching the training session.

The Down's Syndrome Tennis project, the first of its kind nationally, began in January of this year, following the success of Fulham FC Foundation's Down's Syndrome Football team – the Fulham Badgers – which was set up in 2006 with the help of the DSA (Down's Syndrome Association).

Each Tennis session runs from 6.30pm – 7.30pm on a Tuesday evening and is open to anyone with Down's syndrome that is between the age of 10 and 25. The scheme encourages any siblings that come to the NTC as spectators to join in the activity too.

Formed as part of the 'Positive Minds' project run by the Fulham FC Foundation, the scheme works in partnership with the Tennis Foundation and forms a vital element in the DSA's DSActive campaign to encourage those with Down's syndrome to become more involved in sport.

Initially piloted within a 7-mile radius of Raynes Park, the scheme soon acquired a selection of participants with the disability that had not been involved in the previous football sessions. Having moved to the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton in April 2010, the weekly programme now enables those involved access to some of the most sought after tennis amenities in England.

Claire Lavers, Director of Disability Tennis at the Tennis Foundation said: "This co-ordinated approach to delivering tennis to the local Down's syndrome community continues The Tennis Foundation's efforts to discover and encourage more players with learning disabilities to take up tennis.

"Our motto is 'One Game All'; tennis should be accessible to and be able to be enjoyed by everyone and we very much look forward to giving the players a warm welcome at the National Tennis Centre. We are in discussion with Fulham FC Foundation to identify more partnership initiatives and would like to encourage similar activities more widely with football."

The Fulham FC Foundation and the Tennis Foundation each supply a coach for the sessions, enforcing the partnership between the two charities, as well as providing the best tutoring possible for the participants involved.

Steven Day, Chief Executive Officer of the Fulham FC Foundation commented: "The great work being produced in partnership with the Tennis Foundation shows the diversity of our charity and enforces our motto of 'building better lives through sport'. It's fantastic for us to see that having already produced a successful Down's syndrome football team – the Fulham Badgers – that we can also encourage participation in a different sport that normally wouldn't be linked to Fulham."

The Down's Syndrome Association's vast network throughout the Down's syndrome and greater learning disability communities, combined with their great links with the Fulham FC Foundation, have ensured that knowledge of the local courses are a priority and thus far have been a great success.

Paul Zanon, Business Development Director at the Down's Syndrome Association is delighted at the involvement people with the disability have in getting access to sports coaching.

"In 2006 the Fulham FC Foundation (FFCF) partnered with the DSA to create the first football team of the DSActive programme. By 2008 news of this successful partnership was spreading fast and a host of other teams soon expressed their interest to want to participate, including QPR, Charlton and West Ham. Once again, FFCF in partnership with the Tennis Foundation, have taken the pioneering role and are breaking the mould by launching tennis for people with Down's syndrome. As with the football, the DSA is expecting to see incredible benefits by way of physical, social and emotional health improvements, not to mention having lots of fun during the training process!"

Steven Day concluded: "It's valuable for us to know that we can work effectively with groups (like the DSA and the Tennis Foundation) to create successful projects in the local community, that appeal to an audience not usually at the forefront of sporting initiatives. We hope that the popularity of this course will be transferable to a new basketball initiative with the Kingston Wildcats that we will look to unveil later this year."

2009-10 Season Awards
By: timmyg | May 17th, 2010

It's been quite an exhausting season. As I try to make sense of it, do note I probably could have given each player each award. But here is my take on who shined and who did not (hint: Fulham didn't miss him anyway).

Player of the Year — Bobby Zamora
Was there anyone else? Statistically speaking, his fourteen goals in all competitions was a 250% increase of last season's four. But there was also how he shaped the entire offense and was the catalyst for the team's European run. I've written seemingly ad nauseam about his contributions to this side, and don't feel like repeating myself.

Most Valuable Player — Damien Duff
Although Clint Dempsey's goal against Juventus alone could have won him this accolade, Damien Duff proved his value to the club from his first 30 seconds against Amkar Perm all the way to his vital goal at home to Wolfsburg. I posted this back in February but it's worth rehashing:

Of his 6 league goals, four have come from when Fulham were losing. And all four have resulted in a combined 8 points. Here's the breakdown:

Everton (81) tied 1-1
Manchester City (62) down 2-0
Bolton (75), down 1-0
Manchester United (75), up 2-0
Stoke City (61), down 3-0
Birmingham City (59), down 1-0

If goals aren't enough for you, then add to Duff's credentials the fact that Fulham would win all three league games he got an assist it. Note the key word there: would; not already.

In both the 3-1 win over Liverpool on Halloween and 3-0 win over Blackburn right before Thanksgiving, Duff helped set up the Fulham's first goal of the match. On Easter Sunday when Fulham were tied 1-1 with Wigan, Hangeland's winning header was from Duff's corner.

Oh, and Duff also got an assist when Hangeland knocked in his cross at Shaktar Donetsk in the Europa League. The vital away goal sealed Fulham's passage to the Sweet 16 and set up their historic run to the final.

Comeback Player of the Year — Simon Davies
I wrote this back on January 30, after Aston Villa came to the Cottage and left 2-0 victors.

Making matters worse, Simon Davies returned, showed glitters of inspiration, and then left because of his recurring injury. Sadly, today confirmed an ominous feeling I've had recently: I don't think we'll ever see him back to 100-percent.

Oh how wrong I would be.

But, I had good reason to think it. Davies missed the last month of the 2008-09 season due to a stress fracture and did not return until mid-September. For the next five months he was in and out of the treatment room: he played three games in September before re-injuring himself and was out until late November. He returned, strung four games together and reinjured the stress fracture in early December and he was out until in late January. Three games later he was subbed off in just the 24th minute against Villa. This injury spell would be the shortest, as he returned two games later against Burnley. It would also be the last as he never looked back after that.

Davies managed 10 appearances in Europe and 12 starts in the league (with an additional 5 substitute appearances). Although he did not score in the league, his two goals in Europe were beyond vital. He scored the equalizer against Hamburg and then later the leveller with mighty Atletico. To go from having a questionable future to scoring clutch goals is simply remarkable, and fitting of this award.

Unsung Hero of the Season — Mark Schwarzer
Mark did get a lot of credit this season, but if you go back at look at the tape, he played a vital role in our Europa League run this season. He play in Perm helped Fulham get into the Group Stage. His penalty-save against Roma kept our hopes of advancing alive. He was a wall against the mighty Shaktar Donetsk and later against attacking Hamburg. In the final against Atletico, it took an offside goal and a peach of a flick to beat him.
Even after last season's heroics Schwarzer further cemented his place in Fulham's lore. But sadly for him the second bite at the European (NIT) Cup apple was not a success.

Disappointment of the Season — Andy Johnson
Okay, there should be a large asterisk next to this considering his serious, ongoing injuries.

But at any point this season did you think to yourself "When does AJ get back from injury?" like we did with Jimmy Bullard? Sure, things with Jimmy and AJ are different considering we were struggling without Jimmy yet flourished without AJ this year. But it's not just that he was a non-factor, it's that at many points this season I straight up forgot he was even on the team.

And when was the last time Fulham forgot about player that cost us 10 million quid?

Fulham - Your Europa Final MOTM!
Right, the disappointment is behind us (who am I kidding?) and it is time to leave the Europa League Final behind us.

Besides, who was it who said that winning wasn`t the be-all of it but taking partis (he`s lying!)?

But, taking our minds back to that heady night in Hamburg when we got so close to a anything can happen penalty shoot-out, who did you vote for as your man-of-the-match?

Well we had three stand out candidates, three players who hogged the majority of the vote - Dickson Etuhu, Simon Davies and Zoltan Gera!

But who, out of those three, triumphed?

Without waiting for the fanfare of trumpets, here are the results:-

1st - Simon Davies - 27%
2nd - Zoltan Gera - 21%
3rd - Dickson Etuhu - 20%

http://www.3news.co.nz/Schwarzer-fears-Australia-no-longer-unknown-quantity-/tabid/415/articleID/156312/Default.aspx
Schwarzer fears Australia no longer unknown quantity

Fulham's stunning progress to the Europa League final has increased Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer's faith in the power of the underdog as he prepares for the World Cup - although the Socceroos may have already lost that status.

Schwarzer's unfashionable London club swept past European powers and only lost last week's final to Atletico Madrid in extra time.

But Schwarzer's fear is that - just like with Fulham - he has helped ensure that Australia is no longer considered a lightweight by steering the country to a second straight World Cup after a 32-year absence.

"We know it's going to be even probably more difficult than it was four years ago because of that little bit of the unknown factor has gone now after Germany," Schwarzer told The Associated Press. "We like to go our business quietly and really just focus on our own jobs at hand and let everyone do the talking and maybe we can cause some surprises."

That's if decisions go Australia's way. The team was eliminated in the second round in 2006 by eventual champion Italy after a questionable late penalty call in extra time.

"You need that little bit of luck," Schwarzer said. "With Fulham we know what it's like to be denied that little bit of luck (in the final) ... and in 2006 we had a line call go against us with a penalty against Italy and that's how quickly it can be over."

Coach Pim Verbeek has written off Australia's chances of winning the tournament, saying "we can surprise, but to win the World Cup you need at least 20 very good players."

Schwarzer's focus is just advancing next month from Group C, which also includes Germany, Ghana and Serbia, and isn't too concerned about providing a spectacle for fans back home who stay up through the night.

"If you want entertainment they should hire some circus entertainers," he said. "If you look at all the major nations around the world, all the successful nations at any major tournament, taking away from Brazil who are naturally entertainers ... the likes of Italy, Germany, Greece in the Euros (in won in 2004), England don't necessarily play the best style of football but have been successful over the years.

"None of these countries play football in the manner that people demand it to be played but they get results and the game is driven by results. I think a lot more people would be agitated and angry and disillusioned if their country, i.e. the Socceroos, didn't qualify for the next World Cup but played fantastic football and we are sitting in the summer watching football from afar and not having a participation in it."

When Schwarzer returns from the World Cup, he will be hoping Fulham's successful European campaign doesn't prove to be a one-season wonder. He saw that happen with Middlesbrough after he lost the 2006 UEFA Cup final with the northeast English team.

"That's always a concern I think for the club as a whole after the success of the last two years in particular and the anticlimax of getting to the final and then losing it," Schwarzer said. "It happened at Middlesbrough, the manager left and a lot of the players left – the rebuilding process really wasn't up to what it should have been and the club continued on a downward spiral and are unfortunately now playing in the (second-tier League) Championship."

The dressing room hopes chairman Mohamed Al Fayed will invest in Fulham's squad after selling Harrods department store for a reported 1.5 billion pounds.

"You always hope you can continue along the path of rebuilding and continue to strengthen the side - I think every club in the league would like that," Schwarzer said. "The players are realistic and are not expecting an (Roman) Abramovich-style investment when he first arrived at Chelsea or at Manchester City what the owners have done there.

"But I think the chairman has been unbelievable for the club. He has been a man of his word and has stuck with the club through thick and thin."

The 37-year-old Schwarzer only has a year remaining on his Fulham contract and wants to open talks on an extension. At the same time, he is looking to the end of his career by helping Australia win the right to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

Having being playing abroad when his homeland hosted the 2000 Olympics and 2003 rugby World Cup, Schwarzer is desperate to see the 24 FIFA voters award football's biggest event to Australia when they decide in December.

"It has never been held in the region before," he said. "It will help football not only develop in Australia and grow in popularity even more so than it has in the last four or five years, but it will help with the development and enthusiasm for the game in the whole region. A lot of the region depends heavily on Australia."

FULHAM - 12th

In some ways the story of the season. To be at Craven Cottage and see the reaction of the supporters on the night they beat Hamburg to reach the Europa League final was something special.

They may have fallen short against Atletico Madrid in the final, but Roy Hodgson was the architect of a wonderful adventure that burnished the reputation of manager and team and increased the club's profile as Shakhtar Donestsk, Juventus spectacularly, and Wolfsburg were beaten.

A reflection of their manager's sound principles, Fulham were attractive as well as tactically disciplined.

And in Bobby Zamora, they arguably possessed the Premier League's most improved player. A journeyman who fell short of his full potential for most of his career and even criticised by Fulham's own fans, a love affair ensued as he emerged as their top scorer and a contender for England's World Cup squad.

If there is a downside to Fulham's season, it is that Hodgson's success may lead him to be courted by other clubs. So much of Fulham's future success could depend on whether he stays - but foundations are in place for further good times at Craven Cottage.

SEASON'S MARK - B+

Race on for Koren
Midfielder seeks English stay

Robert Koren's agent has admitted a number of clubs have shown an interest in his services just 24 hours after he was released by West Brom.

West Brom somewhat surprisingly decided not to take up the year's option on his contract on Monday, allowing him leave on a free transfer.

The news has alerted a number of clubs across Europe with the player's representative Zoran Krneta expecting no shortage of offers for the Slovenian this summer.

The likes of Newcastle, Wolves, Fulham and Swansea are all thought to be tracking the skilful midfielder.

Offers
"In my opinion we will get at least 10 offers for Robert," Krneta told Nogomania. "There are a lot of interested clubs and I can reveal, that in the first two hours after the news was published on West Bromwich Albion's website, I got calls from four clubs.

"We will talk about his future today, but I repeat, we won't have any problems with finding him a new club and also a good club.

"I'm sure about it as he is a really good and respected footballer.

"He is the one who will choose his club, but I guess he will look for a good contract and also team, where he will be able to play every week."

Krneta admitted Koren would ideally like to stay in England as he searches for a new club.

"He is in his best years and he would like to stay in England, where everybody knows him and where he made his name," concluded Krneta.

http://football.fanhouse.co.uk/2010/05/18/the-year-that-was-a-look-back-at-fulhams-2009-10-campaign/?
The Year That Was: a Look Back at Fulham's 2009-10 Campaign

Not even the most optimistic of Fulham supporters ever imagined that a season that began in Lithuania at the end of July would end in the Nordbank Arena, Hamburg, in mid-May with Roy Hodgson's side tantalisingly close to lifting a European trophy.

Diego Forlan's 116th minute winning goal was agonising and ensured Atletico Madrid left Germany as winners of the first ever Europa league but didn't diminish the achievement of a club more often regarded as a quaint antidote to bigger, flashier Premier League rivals rather than a genuine force.

Hodgson's work means that stereotype no longer holds true as Juventus, Shakhtar Donetsk, Hamburg and Wolfsburg – all beaten on Fulham's thrilling journey to the final – will attest.

The demands of a gruelling 63-game season on a squad that remains short on numbers inevitably meant that the Cottagers were unable to match last season's success in finishing seventh but they again demonstrated that on their day, and particularly at Craven Cottage, they are a match for anyone in the Premier League.

A YEAR BY NUMBERS
Table:
12th (9th at Christmas / 12th at Easter)
Points: 46
Goals For: 39
Goals Against: 46

Manager rating: 10
Admired across Europe, Hodgson's reputation at home was tarnished by his frustrating spell at Blackburn in the late nineties until he took charge at Fulham in December 2007. Not any more. The success of the last two seasons means the manager is now regarded as one of the grand old men of English football and if Fabio Capello were to leave the England job after this summer's World Cup, Hodgson would be the favourite to replace the Italian.

High point of the season: Clint Dempsey's 82nd minute chip would have been memorable in any game but when it completed a four-goal recovery against Juventus, it became part of Fulham folklore.

Low point of the season: The sight of Forlan's shot deflecting past Mark Schwarzer off the thigh of Brede Hangeland will trigger a collective wince at Craven Cottage for years to come.

Derby Highs: Fulham 3 West Ham 2, May 2, 2010.
Derby Lows: Fulham 0 Chelsea 2, August 23, 2010

Player of the year: Bobby Zamora. The striker started the season with a desperately unhappy relationship with the club's supporters yet would have deservedly ended the campaign with a place in England's provisional 30-man World Cup squad were it not for an Achilles injury.

One who will be lucky to be back next year: Diomansy Kamara. The Senegal forward made little impact during the first half of the season before moving to Celtic on loan for the remainder of the campaign. Kamara has one year left on his contract but has already said he would like to stay in Glasgow and it's hard to see Fulham blocking a move if Celtic offer close to the Cottagers' £3m asking price.

Highest Attendance: 25,700 v Arsenal, September 26, 2009
Lowest Attendance: 20,831 v Stoke, May 5, 2010

He's off: Chris Smalling. The young centre back couldn't break up the central defensive partnership of Aaron Hughes and Hangeland but has shown enough promise to land a £10m move to Manchester United. Good business all round.

Wishlist for next season: Owner Mohamed Al Fayed's primary concern is that Hodgson's success doesn't prompt offers from bigger clubs and that the manager remains at Craven Cottage. Whoever is in charge next season will want more bodies on board. Hodgson's worked wonders coaxing performance after performance out of his players but can't do that every year and the squad needs new faces in all departments.

Future prospects: Much will hinge on Hodgson. If he stays, there is no reason why Fulham can't establish themselves at regular top ten finishers. If he goes, though, the new manager would have a big job matching the standards set over the last two years and meeting the revised expectations at the club.

Lighthouse

Borussia Dortmund striker Nelson Valdez is interesting Premiership clubs.

The Paraguay international was linked with Blackburn Rovers and Fulham during the season.

His English representative Barry McIntosh has confirmed that a move to the Premier League is very much an option.

"We are looking to do something before the finals," McIntosh told skysports.com.

"It is tremendously exciting to be able to work on a player like Nelson as he is a terrific footballer. I have moved a number of South American players in recent years to England, but he would be amongst the best.

"We don't envisage a problem in sorting the details of a move to England - but we are aware that because of the likelihood of Paraguay having a good World Cup finals, prices for their players could rise significantly.

"So with that in mind we are pushing the case and although I can't reveal names at this stage, there are number of clubs who have already expressed an interest."
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Well it's the law that we sign at least one WBA and one Everton player a year, and Koren plays for my West London White team on Pro Evo and does alright.
