I have a spreadsheet which has 136 rows, 1 employee per row.

One column (E) has a rating for each employee, from 1 to 4.

The column next to it (F) has a number, a bonus amount, from £0 to £whatever.

I am trying to total up the bonus totals for each rating. I have tried using COUNTIF and DCOUNT etc. etc. but am not getting anywhere... If anyone can help out then I would be forever grateful...!

Snibbo

Easiest way might be to sort the data by rating (column E), then just put in a sum(from:to), for each range of cells for each rating.

Another more complex way is grouping, but you'd need to look at the help doco for that.

Have a pop at SUMIF Burt, should do the job:

=SUMIF(E1:E136,1,F1:F136) will give you the total for rating 1

I would sort and then group like Snibbo  or do a Pivot table, but that is a whole different function but if you have time in the future Burt a very useful tool in Excel

Thank you Mr Ron sir - this works a treat.

And thanks for the other suggestions too - sorting etc. had crossed my mind but as the ratings may change then I didn't want to have to do manual recalculations every time there was a change.

I actually did learn how to do pivot tables 7-8 years ago but I'll be buggered if I can remember how to do them  :dft011:
