I don't understand how the Declan Rice yellow wasn't a red. Regardless of what the defender was doing, it was spikes to the face.

He has gone for the ball, the player ducked down to head the ball, I thought a reprimand would have been sufficient.

If the defender was on the ground and he caught a boot to the face would it be any different? I thought the onus was still on the injuring party to not injure the injured party. Balogun's red from last week comes to mind.

Here's the actual law-

Disciplinary Action: Contact can result in a yellow card for a reckless challenge, or a straight red card for excessive force and endangering an opponent's safety.
It is worth noting that if an opponent recklessly ducks or lunges their head down into an area where a player's foot is already in play, the referee may determine that the opponent created the dangerous situation themselves, which can result in no foul being called against the player with the high boot.

After reviewing it, his foot was waist high as the opponent ducked so low. Very harsh IMO.

Agreed, noticeable that Raul didn't get a yellow for his overhead kick that was at Dan Burn head height, not chest height like Rice's.

I presume if Raul had kicked Dan Burn in the head he would have gotten a red. Doesn't seem like the tournament is against things like bicycle kicks but they expect the players to be aware and in control enough not to injure other players.

Hard to say really, but if the laws are genuinely there to protect players, then you could argue yes. It is dangerous (and exceptionally brave from Burn who could see the whole thing unfolding)!

I'm not English and thought England were the better side in the first half. Not by a lot, mind you, but better. As someone who has more experience with watching Mexico at the Azteca than most here, I expected that they would control possession, especially early on but I thought England dealt with that fairly well. Mexico may have had more of the ball and more shots in the first, but England created better chances (.75xG v .44xG).

Just looked it up in the IFAB (page 118)

"Playing in a dangerous manner:

Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player themself) and includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury. A scissors or bicycle kick is permissible provided that it is not dangerous to an opponent."

The way I read that, it's mostly on the player doing the action.

As the dust settles, I find myself reflecting not on the goals, penalties, decisions or substitutions, but on how the heck Jordan Henderson is in effect using his one good arm to hold up a mirror to my own character and emotional maturity.

That he's a Brentford player, keeping a far better player in Wharton out of the squad, that he's dull to watch, none of that I mind at all.  It's just that certain things stick in my memory and when, in an effort to sell his book, he said that the lowest point in his career was when Liverpool wanted to sell him to Fulham, my brain says "he's just creating a personal redemption story, let it go", but my gut tells me "he thinks he's better than us"

My head, my heart, they feel desperately sorry for his post-game mishap.  My reactions really should stop there, and if yours do, you're a better person than me.  Because there's a stubborn portion of my gut reaction that involves the concept of karma paying a visit.  Says more about me than Mr Henderson, I know that.

Personally I couldn't care less about Henderson. Why the hell he was even picked in the 1st place is beyond me. It's not like he was gonna get much game time anyway.

Well if you actually check it was not the worst day of his life about going to Fulham, it was the fact that Liverpool were willing to pass him on, it had nothing to do with it being Fulham, it could have been anyone.
