...Hence Wolstenhome's somewhat subdued reactions to Haynes' goals. (To be fair he never did get over excited, unlike the hystrionics of today's mouthpieces...And yet he came out with what is probably the most famous of all English football comments.)

It always seemed slightly strange to me that JH was a rather more ready scorer for England than he was for Fulham. After he  (26 goals) and Leggat beat up the 2nd Div (Championship) the year we went up he rarely went into double figures. Almost as if, as a craftsman, he rather disdained the more prosaic task of actually providing the finishing touches.

Wlostenhome hated Haynes & Fulham with a passion. He thought George Eastham was a better player. I could never warm to him as a commentator.

In a book I read about the Maestro for that 1958 game a member of the Soviet entourage was a very young Gorbachev. Many years later when he came to see Thatcher one of the first things he asked was 'How is that Johnny Haynes doing now?' Of course she had no idea of whom he was talking about.  He had been so taken by Johnny's play that long gone day and never forgotten him. Quite impressive I think.  :Haynes The Maestro:

I recognised all the England players, besides the Maestro, and they mostly played for teams now outside the  top division, like Blackburn, Preston, Bolton, Wolves, WBA and Fulham, of course.
