Quote from: WindyCity on July 01, 2024, 03:58:47 PMWhat is England's problem?  That team is loaded with talent.  Just managed to barely get through group stage, against some really questionable teams, and barely win first knockout game.  (Is it the coach/style pf play demanded?)  I just don't get it.  They have world class players throughout the entire team including players on the bench that don't start.  They should be much more prominent, I would think....

The problem is Parkerball/Southgateball/backwards-sideways-passingball, it's not a tactic that suits these attacking-minded players. Also, some of these players have a real ego about them like Bellingham.

I also have this issue that bugs me, when a defender gets the ball his object is to get it forward in a timely and efficient manner, but if there is no forward pass available, what is he supposed to do.

Quote from: Surlyc on July 02, 2024, 10:52:29 AMI guess it could be worse - I have no idea how Gregg Berhalter and Roberto Martinez were allowed to lead their teams into this year's tournaments, let alone how they have not yet been sacked.

Hopefully Berhhalter is on the way out after that dismal display in Copa America. Total loser as a coach, IMHO.  Should have been dropped a long time ago.  Can't believe he was dropped yet brought back.  Get rid of this bum.....

I'd love to hear from the managers in the comp and whether they agree with you that our squad isn't that great.......We have 3 players who were respectively voted the best players in the 3 best leagues in the world.....Crazy chat this.

Not at all. Look at us playing Gallagher, Trent Arnold, Rice in a unfavoured position. Trippier on the wrong side. Toney coming on who has missed 1/2 the current season. Our squad isn't anywhere near the quality of most others (squad based claim not 3 best players in the world based claim).

I think if anything Slovenia v Portugal and Denmark v Germany showed that they weren't quite the useless pushovers we initially thought!

What you just described is a manager selection issue, not a squad issue.....he had way better options in both his current squad, and players he decided not to pick for reasons such as pride, and favouritism :slap:

Super Mick

Southgate would relegate us. No question.

He could tell Kane to stop playing centre half and get up front where he's supposed to be , drop him for the next game and start with Watkins !

In every game so far Kane should have come on at the 60 minute mark to use his experience and dwindling energy to steer the ship home.

My granddaughter, watching the TV, just asked me if Southgate will have to be driven to the palace to tender his resignation to the king.

Toney is a typical example, could have had Solanke whos just had a 20-goal season in the toughest league in the world, or even just Grealish whos off form but still world class, but took Toney on public relations/political grounds

Grealish is pretty far from world class. These days he plays in exactly the same way as the England players do, holding on to the ball for too long and just playing a sideways pass. His main attributes are retaining possession and winning fouls. Gordon would be the better option.

Thought Toney made a difference when he came on, we looked more threatening- he occupied defenders, and created space for others, like for Kane when he scored.
And he can score himself.

Not sure of the pr/political value to Southgate for taking him.
